Measurement of the branching fraction for $ψ(3686)\toωK^+ K^-$

With $1.06\times 10^8$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector, the branching fraction of $ψ(3686) \to ωK^+ K^-$ is measured to be $(1.54 \pm 0.04 \pm 0.11) \times 10^{-4}$. This is the most precise result to date, due to the largest $ψ(3686)$ sample, improved signal reconstruction efficiency, good simulation of the detector performance, and a more accurate knowledge of the continuum contribution. Using the branching fraction of $J/ψ\to ωK^+ K^-$, the ratio $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3868) \to K^+K^-) / \mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to K^+K^-)$ is determined to be $(18.4 \pm 3.7)\,\%$. This constitutes a significantly improved test of the $12\,\%$ rule, with the uncertainty now dominated by the $J/ψ$ branching fraction.

Observation of Electromagnetic Dalitz decays J/ψ\to P e^+e^-

Based on a sample of (225.3\pm2.8)\times 10^{6} J/ψevents collected with the BESIII detector, the electromagnetic Dalitz decays of J/ψ\to P e^+e^-(P=η'/η/π^0) are studied. By reconstructing the pseudoscalar mesons in various decay modes, the decays J/ψ\to η' e^+e^-, J/ψ\to ηe^+e^- and J/ψ\to π^0 e^+e^- are observed for the first time. The branching fractions are determined to be \mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to η' e^+e^-) = (5.81\pm0.16\pm0.31)\times10^{-5}, \mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to ηe^+e^-) = (1.16\pm0.07\pm0.06)\times10^{-5}, and \mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to π^0 e^+e^-)=(7.56\pm1.32\pm0.50)\times10^{-7}, where the first errors are statistical and the second ones systematic.

Warm Molecular Gas in Luminous Infrared Galaxies

We present our initial results on the CO rotational spectral line energy distribution (SLED) of the $J$ to $J$$-$1 transitions from $J=4$ up to $13$ from Herschel SPIRE spectroscopic observations of 65 luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) in the Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey (GOALS). The observed SLEDs change on average from one peaking at $J \le 4$ to a broad distribution peaking around $J \sim\,$6$-$7 as the IRAS 60-to-100 um color, $C(60/100)$, increases. However, the ratios of a CO line luminosity to the total infrared luminosity, $L_{\rm IR}$, show the smallest variation for $J$ around 6 or 7. This suggests that, for most LIRGs, ongoing star formation (SF) is also responsible for a warm gas component that emits CO lines primarily in the mid-$J$ regime ($5 \lesssim J \lesssim 10$). As a result, the logarithmic ratios of the CO line luminosity summed over CO (5$-$4), (6$-$5), (7$-$6), (8$-$7) and (10$-$9) transitions to $L_{\rm IR}$, $\log R_{\rm midCO}$, remain largely independent of $C(60/100)$, and show a mean value of $-4.13$ ($\equiv \log R^{\rm SF}_{\rm midCO}$) and a sample standard deviation of only 0.10 for the SF-dominated galaxies. Including additional galaxies from the literature, we show, albeit with small number of cases, the possibility that galaxies, which bear powerful interstellar shocks unrelated to the current SF, and galaxies, in which an energetic active galactic nucleus contributes significantly to the bolometric luminosity, have their $R_{\rm midCO}$ higher and lower than $R^{\rm SF}_{\rm midCO}$, respectively.

Observation of $η^{\prime}\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{-}$ and $η^{\prime}\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{0}π^{0}$

Using a sample of $1.3\times 10^9$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we report the first observation of $η^{\prime}\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{-}$ and $η^{\prime}\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{0}π^{0}$. The measured branching fractions are $\mathcal{B}$($η^{\prime}\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{-}$) = $(8.53\pm0.69({\rm stat.})\pm0.64({\rm syst.}))\times10^{-5}$ and $\mathcal{B}$($η^{\prime}\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{0}π^{0}$) = $(1.82\pm0.35({\rm stat.})\pm0.18({\rm syst.}))\times10^{-4}$, which are consistent with theoretical predictions based on a combination of chiral perturbation theory and vector-meson dominance.

ALMA Observations of Warm Molecular Gas and Cold Dust in NGC 34

We present ALMA Cycle-0 observations of the CO (6-5) line emission (rest-frame frequency = 691.473 GHz) and of the 435$μm$ dust continuum emission in the nuclear region of NGC 34, a local luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) at a distance of 84 Mpc (1" = 407 pc) which contains a Seyfert 2 active galactic nucleus (AGN) and a nuclear starburst. The CO emission is well resolved by the ALMA beam ($\rm 0."26\times 0."23$), with an integrated flux of $\rm f_{CO~(6-5)} = 1004\; (\pm 151) \; Jy\; km\; s^{-1}$. Both the morphology and kinematics of the CO (6-5) emission are rather regular, consistent with a compact rotating disk with a size of 200 pc. A significant emission feature is detected on the red-shifted wing of the line profile at the frequency of the $\rm H^{13}CN\; (8-7)$ line, with an integrated flux of $\rm 17.7 \pm 2.1 (random) \pm 2.7 (sysmatic)\; Jy\;km\; s^{-1}$. However, it cannot be ruled out that the feature is due to an outflow of warm dense gas with a mean velocity of $\rm 400\; km\; s^{-1}$. The continuum is resolved into an elongated configuration, and the observed flux corresponds to a dust mass of $\rm M_{dust} = 10^{6.97\pm 0.13}\; M_{sun}$. An unresolved central core ($\rm radius \simeq 50\; pc$) contributes $28\%$ of the continuum flux and $19\%$ of the CO (6-5) flux, consistent with insignificant contributions of the AGN to both emissions. Both the CO (6-5) and continuum spatial distributions suggest a very high gas column density ($\rm >= 10^4\; M_{sun}\; pc^{-2}$) in the nuclear region at $\rm radius <= 100\; pc$.

Observation of a charged charmoniumlike structure in $e^+e^- \to (D^{*} \bar{D}^{*})^{\pm} π^\mp$ at $\sqrt{s}=4.26$GeV

We study the process $e^+e^- \to (D^{*} \bar{D}^{*})^{\pm} π^\mp$ at a center-of-mass energy of 4.26GeV using a 827pb$^{-1}$ data sample obtained with the BESIII detector at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider. Based on a partial reconstruction technique, the Born cross section is measured to be $(137\pm9\pm15)$pb. We observe a structure near the $(D^{*} \bar{D}^{*})^{\pm}$ threshold in the $π^\mp$ recoil mass spectrum, which we denote as the $Z^{\pm}_c(4025)$. The measured mass and width of the structure are $(4026.3\pm2.6\pm3.7)$MeV/c$^2$ and $(24.8\pm5.6\pm7.7)$MeV, respectively. Its production ratio $\frac{σ(e^+e^-\to Z^{\pm}_c(4025)π^\mp \to (D^{*} \bar{D}^{*})^{\pm} π^\mp)}{σ(e^+e^-\to (D^{*} \bar{D}^{*})^{\pm} π^\mp)}$ is determined to be $0.65\pm0.09\pm0.06$. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic.

Amplitude Analysis of the $D^+ \to K^0_S π^+ π^0$ Dalitz Plot

We perform an analysis of the $D^+ \to K^0_S π^+ π^0$ Dalitz plot using a data set of 2.92 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collisions at the $ψ(3770)$ mass accumulated by the BESIII Experiment, in which 166694 candidate events are selected with a background of 15.1%. The Dalitz plot is found to be well-represented by a combination of six quasi-two-body decay channels ($K^0_Sρ^+$, $K^0_Sρ(1450)^+$, $\overline{K}^{*0}π^+$, $\overline{K}_0(1430)^0π^+$, $\overline{K}(1680)^0π^+$, $\overlineκ^0π^+$) plus a small non-resonant component. Using the fit fractions from this analysis, partial branching ratios are updated with higher precision than previous measurements.

Observation of $e^{+} e^{-} \to γX(3872)$ at BESIII

With data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring at center-of-mass energies from 4.009 to 4.420 GeV, the process $e^{+} e^{-} \to γX(3872)$ is observed for the first time with a statistical significance of $6.3σ$. The measured mass of the $X(3872)$ is ($3871.9\pm 0.7_{\rm stat.}\pm 0.2_{\rm sys.}$) MeV/$c^2$, in agreement with previous measurements. Measurements of the product of the cross section $σ[e^{+} e^{-} \to γX(3872)]$ and the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}[X(3872) \to π^{+} π^{-} J/ψ]$ at center-of-mass energies 4.009, 4.229, 4.260, and 4.360 GeV are reported. Our measurements are consistent with expectations for the radiative transition process $Y(4260) \to γX(3872)$.

Observation of a charged charmoniumlike structure Z_c(4020) and search for the Z_c(3900) in e+e- to pi+pi-h_c

We study e+e- --> pi+pi-h_c at center-of-mass energies from 3.90 GeV to 4.42 GeV using data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider. The Born cross sections are measured at 13 energies, and are found to be of the same order of magnitude as those of e+e- --> pi+pi-J/psi but with a different line shape. In the π^\pm h_c mass spectrum, a distinct structure, referred to as Z_c(4020), is observed at 4.02 GeV/c^2. The Z_c(4020) carries an electric charge and couples to charmonium. A fit to the π^\pm h_c invariant mass spectrum, neglecting possible interferences, results in a mass of (4022.9\pm 0.8\pm 2.7) MeV/c^2 and a width of (7.9\pm 2.7\pm 2.6) MeV for the Z_c(4020), where the first errors are statistical and the second systematic. No significant Z_c(3900) signal is observed, and upper limits on the Z_c(3900) production cross sections in π^\pm h_c at center-of-mass energies of 4.23 and 4.26 GeV are set.

Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 3. Higgs Properties

This Report summarizes the results of the activities in 2012 and the first half of 2013 of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group. The main goal of the working group was to present the state of the art of Higgs Physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. This report follows the first working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002) and the second working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Differential Distributions (CERN-2012-002). After the discovery of a Higgs boson at the LHC in mid-2012 this report focuses on refined prediction of Standard Model (SM) Higgs phenomenology around the experimentally observed value of 125-126 GeV, refined predictions for heavy SM-like Higgs bosons as well as predictions in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and first steps to go beyond these models. The other main focus is on the extraction of the characteristics and properties of the newly discovered particle such as couplings to SM particles, spin and CP-quantum numbers etc.

Unconventional thermal cloak hiding an object outside the cloak

All the thermal cloaks reported in the literature can be used to thermally hide an object inside the cloak. However, a common limitation of this kind of thermal cloaks is that the cloaked object cannot feel the external heat flow since it is located inside the cloak; thus we call these cloaks ``conventional thermal cloaks''. Here we manage to overcome this limitation by exploiting a class of unconventional thermal cloaks that enable the cloaked object to feel the external heat flow. Our finite element simulations in two dimensions show the desired cloaking effect. The underlying mechanism originates from the complementary effect of thermal metamaterials with negative thermal conductivities. This work suggests a different method to design thermal devices where heat conduction can be controlled at will.

Observation of a structure at 1.84 GeV/c$^2$ in the $3(π^+π^-)$ mass spectrum in $J/ψ\rightarrow γ3(π^+π^-)$ decays

With a sample of 225.3 million $J/ψ$ events taken with the BESIII detector, the decay $J/ψ\rightarrow γ3(π^+π^-)$ is analyzed. A structure at 1.84 GeV/c$^2$ is observed in the $3(π^+π^-)$ invariant mass spectrum with a statistical significance of 7.6$σ$ . The mass and width are measured to be $M=1842.2\pm 4.2^{+7.1}_{-2.6}$ MeV/c$^2$ and $Γ=83\pm 14 \pm 11$ MeV. The product branching fraction is determined to be $B(J/ψ\rightarrowγX(1840))\times B(X(1840)\rightarrow 3(π^+π^-))=(2.44\pm0.36^{+0.60}_{-0.74})\times 10^{-5}$. No $η^\prime$ signals are observed in the $3(π^+π^-)$ invariant mass spectrum, and the upper limit of the branching fraction for the decay $η^\prime\rightarrow 3(π^+π^-)$ is set to be $3.1\times10^{-5}$ at a 90% confidence level.

Mutual ionization in atomic collisions near the electronic threshold

We study mutual ionization in collisions between atomic hydrogen and helium at impact velocities near the electronic threshold for this process (determined by the condition that kinetic energy of an equivelocity free electron is approximately equal to the sum of binding energies of active electrons in the projectile and target). We show that this process is substantially influenced by the Coulomb repulsion between the emitted electrons and that the atomic nuclei are very strongly involved in the momentum balance along the collision velocity.

Shock-Enhanced C+ Emission and the Detection of H2O from Stephan's Quintet's Group-Wide Shock using Herschel

We present the first Herschel spectroscopic detections of the [OI]63 and [CII]158 micron fine-structure transitions, and a single para-H2O line from the 35 x 15 kpc^2 shocked intergalactic filament in Stephan's Quintet. The filament is believed to have been formed when a high-speed intruder to the group collided with clumpy intergroup gas. Observations with the PACS spectrometer provide evidence for broad (> 1000 km s^-1) luminous [CII] line profiles, as well as fainter [OI]63micron emission. SPIRE FTS observations reveal water emission from the p-H2O (111-000) transition at several positions in the filament, but no other molecular lines. The H2O line is narrow, and may be associated with denser intermediate-velocity gas experiencing the strongest shock-heating. The [CII]/PAH{tot) and [CII]/FIR ratios are too large to be explained by normal photo-electric heating in PDRs. HII region excitation or X-ray/Cosmic Ray heating can also be ruled out. The observations lead to the conclusion that a large fraction the molecular gas is diffuse and warm. We propose that the [CII], [OI] and warm H2 line emission is powered by a turbulent cascade in which kinetic energy from the galaxy collision with the IGM is dissipated to small scales and low-velocities, via shocks and turbulent eddies. Low-velocity magnetic shocks can help explain both the [CII]/[OI] ratio, and the relatively high [CII]/H2 ratios observed. The discovery that [CII] emission can be enhanced, in large-scale turbulent regions in collisional environments has implications for the interpretation of [CII] emission in high-z galaxies.

Surfaces of colloidal PbSe nanocrystals probed by thin-film positron annihilation spectroscopy

Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) and positron-electron momentum density (PEMD) studies on multilayers of PbSe nanocrystals (NCs), supported by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), show that positrons are strongly trapped at NC surfaces, where they provide insight into the surface composition and electronic structure of PbSe NCs. Our analysis indicates abundant annihilation of positrons with Se electrons at the NC surfaces and with O electrons of the oleic ligands bound to Pb ad-atoms at the NC surfaces, which demonstrates that positrons can be used as a sensitive probe to investigate the surface physics and chemistry of nanocrystals inside multilayers. Ab-initio electronic structure calculations provide detailed insight in the valence and semi-core electron contributions to the positron-electron momentum density of PbSe. Both lifetime and PEMD are found to correlate with changes in the particle morphology characteristic of partial ligand removal.
