Neutron skin uncertainties of Skyrme energy density functionals

Background: Neutron-skin thickness is an excellent indicator of isovector properties of atomic nuclei. As such, it correlates strongly with observables in finite nuclei that depend on neutron-to-proton imbalance and the nuclear symmetry energy that characterizes the equation of state of neutron-rich matter. A rich worldwide experimental program involving studies with rare isotopes, parity violating electron scattering, and astronomical observations is devoted to pinning down the isovector sector of nuclear models. Purpose: We assess the theoretical systematic and statistical uncertainties of neutron-skin thickness and relate them to the equation of state of nuclear matter, and in particular to nuclear symmetry energy parameters. Methods: We use the nuclear superfluid Density Functional Theory with several Skyrme energy density functionals and density dependent pairing. To evaluate statistical errors and their budget, we employ the statistical covariance technique. Results: We find that the errors on neutron skin increase with neutron excess. Statistical errors due to uncertain coupling constants of the density functional are found to be larger than systematic errors, the latter not exceeding 0.06 fm in most neutron-rich nuclei across the nuclear landscape. The single major source of uncertainty is the poorly determined slope L of the symmetry energy that parametrizes its density dependence. Conclusions: To provide essential constraints on the symmetry energy of the nuclear energy density functional, next-generation measurements of neutron skins are required to deliver precision better than 0.06 fm.

Precision Measurements of ${\cal B}[ψ(3686) \to π^+π^- J/ψ]$ and ${\cal B}[J/ψ\to l^+l^-]$

Based on $(106.41 \pm 0.86)\times 10^{6}$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the branching fractions of $ψ(3686) \to π^+π^- J/ψ$, $J/ψ\to e^+e^- $, and $J/ψ\to μ^+μ^-$ are measured. We obtain ${\cal B}[ψ(3686) \to π^+π^-J/ψ]=(34.98\pm 0.02\pm 0.45)%$, ${\cal B}[J/ψ\to e^+e^-] = (5.983 \pm 0.007 \pm 0.037)%$ and ${\cal B}[J/ψ\to μ^+μ^-] = (5.973 \pm 0.007 \pm 0.038)%$. The measurement of ${\cal B}[ψ(3686) \to π^{+}π^{-}J/ψ]$ confirms the CLEO-c measurement, and is apparently larger than the others. The measured $J/ψ$ leptonic decay branching fractions agree with previous experiments within one standard deviation. These results lead to ${\cal B}[J/ψ\to l^+l^-] = (5.978 \pm 0.005 \pm 0.040)%$ by averaging over the $e^{+}e^{-}$ and $μ^{+}μ^{-}$ channels and a ratio of ${\cal B}[J/ψ\to e^+e^-] / {\cal B}[J/ψ\to μ^+μ^-] = 1.0017 \pm 0.0017 \pm 0.0033$, which tests $e$-$μ$ universality at the four tenths of a percent level. All the measurements presented in this paper are the most precise in the world to date.

Study of $J/ψ\rightarrow ωp \bar{p}$ at BESIII

The decay $J/ψ\rightarrow ωp \bar{p}$ has been studied, using $225.3\times 10^{6}$ $J/ψ$ events accumulated at BESIII. No significant enhancement near the $p\bar{p}$ invariant-mass threshold (denoted as $X(p\bar{p})$) is observed. The upper limit of the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\rightarrow ωX(p\bar{p}) \rightarrow ωp \bar{p})$ is determined to be $3.9\times10^{-6}$ at the 95% confidence level. The branching fraction of $J/ψ\rightarrow ωp \bar{p}$ is measured to be $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\rightarrow ωp \bar{p}) =(9.0 \pm 0.2\ (\text{stat.})\pm 0.9\ (\text{syst.})) \times 10^{-4}$.

Statistical distribution of current helicity in solar active regions over the magnetic cycle

The current helicity in solar active regions derived from vector magnetograph observations for more than 20 years indicates the so-called hemispheric sign rule; the helicity is predominantly negative in the northern hemisphere and positive in the southern hemisphere. In this paper we revisit this property and compare the statistical distribution of current helicity with Gaussian distribution using the method of normal probability paper. The data sample comprises 6630 independent magnetograms obtained at Huairou Solar Observing Station, China, over 1988-2005 which correspond to 983 solar active regions. We found the following. (1) For the most of cases in time-hemisphere domains the distribution of helicity is close to Gaussian. (2) At some domains (some years and hemispheres) we can clearly observe significant departure of the distribution from a single Gaussian, in the form of two- or multi-component distribution. (3) For the most non-single-Gaussian parts of the dataset we see co-existence of two or more components, one of which (often predominant) has a mean value very close to zero, which does not contribute much to the hemispheric sign rule. The other component has relatively large value of helicity that often determines agreement or disagreement with the hemispheric sign rule in accord with the global structure of helicity reported by Zhang et al. (2010).

Meter-baseline tests of sterile neutrinos at Daya Bay

We explore the sensitivity of an experiment at the Daya Bay site, with a point radioactive source and a few meter baseline, to neutrino oscillations involving one or more eV mass sterile neutrinos. We find that within a year, the entire 3+2 and 1+3+1 parameter space preferred by global fits can be excluded at the 3σlevel, and if an oscillation signal is found, the 3+1 and 3+2 scenarios can be distinguished from each other at more than the 3σlevel provided one of the sterile neutrinos is lighter than 0.5 eV.

Observation of a charged charmoniumlike structure in e+e- to pi+pi-J/psi at \sqrt{s}=4.26 GeV

We study the process e+e- to pi+pi-J/psi at a center-of-mass energy of 4.260 GeV using a 525 pb^{-1} data sample collected with the BESIII detector operating at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider. The Born cross section is measured to be (62.9\pm 1.9\pm 3.7) pb, consistent with the production of the Y(4260). We observe a structure at around 3.9 GeV/c^2 in the π^\pm J/psi mass spectrum, which we refer to as the Z_c(3900). If interpreted as a new particle, it is unusual in that it carries an electric charge and couples to charmonium. A fit to the π^\pm J/psi invariant mass spectrum, neglecting interference, results in a mass of (3899.0\pm 3.6\pm 4.9) MeV/c^2 and a width of (46\pm 10\pm 20) MeV. Its production ratio is measured to be R=\frac{σ(e+e- to π^\pm Z_c(3900)^\mp to pi+pi-J/psi))} {σ(e+e- to pi+pi-J/psi)}=(21.5\pm 3.3\pm 7.5)%. In all measurements the first errors are statistical and the second are systematic.

Search for the Lepton Flavor Violation Process $J/ψ\to eμ$ at BESIII

We search for the lepton-flavor-violating decay of the $J/ψ$ into an electron and a muon using $(225.3\pm2.8)\times 10^{6}$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. Four candidate events are found in the signal region, consistent with background expectations. An upper limit on the branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to eμ)< 1.5 \times 10^{-7}$ (90% C.L.) is obtained.

The origin of the helicity hemispheric sign rule reversals in the mean-field solar-type dynamo

Observations of proxies of the magnetic helicity in the Sun over the past two solar cycles revealed reversals of the helicity hemispheric sign rule (negative in the North and positive in the South hemispheres). We apply the mean-field solar dynamo model to study the reversals of the magnetic helicity sign for the dynamo operating in the bulk of the solar convection zone. The evolution of the magnetic helicity is governed by the conservation law. We found that the reversal of the sign of the small-scale magnetic helicity follows the dynamo wave propagating inside the convection zone. Therefore, the spatial patterns of the magnetic helicity reversals reflect the processes which contribute to generation and evolution of the large-scale magnetic fields. At the surface the patterns of the helicity sign reversals are determined by the magnetic helicity boundary conditions at the top of the convection zone. We demonstrate the impact of fluctuations in the dynamo parameters and variability in dynamo cycle amplitude on the reversals of the magnetic helicity sign rule. The obtained results suggest that the magnetic helicity of the large-scale axisymmetric field can be treated as an additional observational tracer for the solar dynamo.

Partial wave analysis of $ψ(2S) \to p \bar{p}η$

Using a sample of $1.06 \times 10^{8}$ $ψ(2S)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, the decay $ψ(2S) \to p \bar{p}η$ is studied. A partial wave analysis determines that the intermediate state N(1535) with a mass of $1524\pm5^{+10}_{-4}$ MeV/$c^2$ and a width of $130^{+27+57}_{-24-10}$ MeV/$c^2$ is dominant in the decay; the product branching fraction is determined to be $B(ψ(2S) \to N(1535)\bar{p})\times B(N(1535)\to pη)+c.c. = (5.2\pm0.3^{+3.2}_{-1.2})\times 10^{-5}$. Furthermore, the branching fraction of $ψ(2S) \to ηp \bar{p}$ is measured to be $(6.4\pm0.2\pm0.6)\times 10^{-5}$.

Search for $η$ and $η^\prime\to π^+ e^- \barν_e +c.c.$ decays in $\jpsi \to ϕη$ and $ϕη^\prime$

Using a sample of 225.3 million $\jpsi$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII $e^+e^-$ collider in 2009, searches for the decays of $η$ and $η^\prime\toπ^+ e^- \barν_e +c.c.$ in $\jpsi \to ϕη$ and $ϕη^\prime$ are performed. The $ϕ$ signals, which are reconstructed in $K^+K^-$ final states, are used to tag $η$ and $η^\prime$ semileptonic decays. No signals are observed for either $η$ or $η^\prime$, and upper limits at the 90% confidence level are determined to be $7.3\times 10^{-4}$ and $5.0\times 10^{-4}$ for the ratios $\frac{{\mathcal B}(η\to π^+ e^- \barν_e +c.c.)}{{\mathcal B}(η\to \pip\pim\piz)}$ and $\frac{{\mathcal B}(η^\prime\to π^+ e^-\barν_e +c.c.)}{{\mathcal B}(η^\prime \to \pip\pimη)}$, respectively. These are the first upper limit values determined for $η$ and $η^\prime$ semileptonic weak decays.

H2O emission in high-z ultra-luminous infrared galaxies

Using IRAM PdBI we report the detection of H2O in six new lensed ultra-luminous starburst galaxies at high redshift, discovered in the Herschel H-ATLAS survey. The sources are detected either in the 2_{02}-1_{11} or 2_{11}-2_{02} H_2O emission lines with integrated line fluxes ranging from 1.8 to 14 Jy.km/s. The corresponding apparent luminosities are mu x L_H2O ~ 3-12 x 10^8 Lo, where mu is the lensing magnification factor (3 < mu < 12). These results confirm that H2O lines are among the strongest molecular lines in such galaxies, with intensities almost comparable to those of the high-J CO lines, and same profiles and line widths (200-900 km/s) as the latter. With the current sensitivity of PdBI, H2O can therefore easily be detected in high-z lensed galaxies (with F(500um) > 100 mJy) discovered in the Herschel surveys. Correcting the luminosities for lensing amplification, L_H2O is found to have a strong dependence on the IR luminosity, varying as ~L_IR^{1.2}. This relation which needs to be confirmed with better statistics, may indicate a role of radiative (IR) excitation of the H2O lines, and implies that high-z galaxies with L_IR >~ 10^13 Lo tend to be very strong emitters in H2O, that have no equivalent in the local universe.

Propagation of uncertainties in the Skyrme energy-density-functional model

Parameters of nuclear energy-density-functionals (EDFs) are always derived by an optimization to experimental data. For the minima of appropriately defined penalty functions, a statistical sensitivity analysis provides the uncertainties of the EDF parameters. To quantify theoretical errors of observables given by the model, we studied the propagation of uncertainties within the UNEDF0 Skyrme-EDF approach. We found that typically the standard errors rapidly increase towards neutron rich nuclei. This can be linked to large uncertainties of the isovector coupling constants of the currently used EDFs.

Evidence for η_{c}(2S) in ψ(3686) \to γK_{S}^{0}K^{\pm}π^{\mp}π^{+}π^{-}

We search for the M1 radiative transition ψ(3686) \to γη_{c}(2S) by reconstructing the exclusive η_{c}(2S) \to K_{S}^{0}K^{\pm}π^{\mp}π^{+}π^{-} decay using 1.06 \times 10^8 ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector. The signal is observed with a statistical significance of greater than 4 standard deviations. The measured mass of the η_{c}(2S) is 3646.9 \pm 1.6(stat) \pm 3.6(syst) MeV/c^2, and the width is 9.9 \pm 4.8(stat) \pm 2.9(syst) MeV/c^2. The product branching fraction is measured to be B(ψ(3686) \to γη_{c}(2S)) \times B(η_{c}(2S) \to K_{S}^{0}K^{\pm}π^{\mp}π^{+}π^{-}) = (7.03 \pm 2.10(stat) \pm 0.70(syst)) \times 10^{-6}. This measurement complements a previous BESIII measurement of ψ(3686) \to γη_{c}(2S) with η_{c}(2S) \to K_{S}^{0} K^{\pm}π^{\mp} and K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}.
