Observation of $e^+e^-\to π^0π^0 h_c$ and a neutral charmoniumlike structure $Z_c(4020)^0$

Using data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider at center-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}=4.23$, 4.26, and 4.36~GeV, we observe $\EE\to \pphc$ for the first time. The Born cross sections are measured and found to be about half of those of $\EE\to π^+π^-h_c$ within less than 2$σ$. In the $π^0h_c$ mass spectrum, a structure at 4.02~GeV/$c^2$ is found. It is most likely to be the neutral isospin partner of the $\zcp^{\pm}$ observed in the process of $\EE\to π^+π^-h_c$ is found. A fit to the $π^0 h_c$ invariant mass spectrum, with the width of the $\zcpn$ fixed to that of its charged isospin partner and possible interferences with non-$\zcpn$ amplitudes neglected, gives a mass of ($4023.9\pm 2.2 \pm 3.8$)~MeV/$c^2$ for the $\zcpn$, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic.

Search for the $Y(4140)$ via $e^{+} e^{-} \to γϕJ/ψ$ at $\sqrt{s}=$ 4.23, 4.26 and 4.36 GeV

Using data samples collected at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s} = 4.23$, 4.26, and 4.36 GeV with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring, we search for the production of the charmoniumlike state $Y(4140)$ through a radiative transition followed by its decay to $ϕJ/ψ$. No significant signal is observed and upper limits on $σ[e^{+} e^{-} \rightarrow γY(4140)] \cdot \mathcal{B}(Y(4140)\rightarrow ϕJ/ψ)$ at the $90\%$ confidence level are estimated as 0.35, 0.28, and 0.33 pb at $\sqrt{s} = 4.23$, 4.26, and 4.36 GeV, respectively.

Long-range pseudorapidity dihadron correlations in $d$+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200$ GeV

Dihadron angular correlations in $d$+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200$ GeV are reported as a function of the measured zero-degree calorimeter neutral energy and the forward charged hadron multiplicity in the Au-beam direction. A finite correlated yield is observed at large relative pseudorapidity ($Δη$) on the near side (i.e. relative azimuth $Δϕ\sim0$). This correlated yield as a function of $Δη$ appears to scale with the dominant, primarily jet-related, away-side ($Δϕ\simπ$) yield. The Fourier coefficients of the $Δϕ$ correlation, $V_{n}=\langle\cos nΔϕ\rangle$, have a strong $Δη$ dependence. In addition, it is found that $V_{1}$ is approximately inversely proportional to the mid-rapidity event multiplicity, while $V_{2}$ is independent of it with similar magnitude in the forward ($d$-going) and backward (Au-going) directions.

Stellar masses from the CANDELS survey: the GOODS-South and UDS fields

We present the public release of the stellar mass catalogs for the GOODS-S and UDS fields obtained using some of the deepest near-IR images available, achieved as part of the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) project. We combine the effort from ten different teams, who computed the stellar masses using the same photometry and the same redshifts. Each team adopted their preferred fitting code, assumptions, priors, and parameter grid. The combination of results using the same underlying stellar isochrones reduces the systematics associated with the fitting code and other choices. Thanks to the availability of different estimates, we can test the effect of some specific parameters and assumptions on the stellar mass estimate. The choice of the stellar isochrone library turns out to have the largest effect on the galaxy stellar mass estimates, resulting in the largest distributions around the median value (with a semi interquartile range larger than 0.1 dex). On the other hand, for most galaxies, the stellar mass estimates are relatively insensitive to the different parameterizations of the star formation history. The inclusion of nebular emission in the model spectra does not have a significant impact for the majority of galaxies (less than a factor of 2 for ~80% of the sample). Nevertheless, the stellar mass for the subsample of young galaxies (age < 100 Myr), especially in particular redshift ranges (e.g., 2.2 < z < 2.4, 3.2 < z < 3.6, and 5.5 < z < 6.5), can be seriously overestimated (by up to a factor of 10 for < 20 Myr sources) if nebular contribution is ignored.

Precision measurement of the $D^{*0}$ decay branching fractions

Using 482 pb$^{-1}$ of data taken at $\sqrt{s}=4.009$ GeV, we measure the branching fractions of the decays of $D^{*0}$ into $D^0π^0$ and $D^0γ$ to be $\BR(D^{*0} \to D^0π^0)=(65.5\pm 0.8\pm 0.5)%$ and $\BR(D^{*0} \to D^0γ)=(34.5\pm 0.8\pm 0.5)%$ respectively, by assuming that the $D^{*0}$ decays only into these two modes. The ratio of the two branching fractions is $\BR(D^{*0} \to D^0π^0)/\BR(D^{*0} \to D^0γ) =1.90\pm 0.07\pm 0.05$, which is independent of the assumption made above. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones systematic. The precision is improved by a factor of three compared to the present world average values.

Study of $e^+e^-\toωχ_{cJ}$ at center-of-mass energies from 4.21 to 4.42 GeV

Based on data samples collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider at 9 center-of-mass energies from 4.21 to 4.42 GeV, we search for the production of $e^+e^-\to ωχ_{cJ}$ ($J$=0, 1, 2). The process $e^+e^-\to ωχ_{c0}$ is observed for the first time, and the Born cross sections at $\sqrt{s}$=4.23 and 4.26 GeV are measured to be $(55.4\pm 6.0\pm 5.9)$ and $(23.7\pm 5.3\pm 3.5)$ pb, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The $ωχ_{c0}$ signals at the other 7 energies and $e^+e^-\to ωχ_{c1}$ and $ωχ_{c2}$ signals are not significant, and the upper limits on the cross sections are determined. By examining the $ωχ_{c0}$ cross section as a function of center-of-mass energy, we find that it is inconsistent with the line shape of the $Y(4260)$ observed in $e^+ e^-\toπ^+π^-J/ψ$. Assuming the $ωχ_{c0}$ signals come from a single resonance, we extract mass and width of the resonance to be $(4230\pm8\pm6)$ MeV/$c^2$ and $(38\pm12\pm2)$ MeV, respectively, and the statistical significance is more than $9σ$.

The Schrodinger-Newton System with Self-Field Coupling

We study the Schrodinger-Newton system of equations with the addition of gravitational field energy sourcing - such additional nonlinearity is to be expected from a theory of gravity (like general relativity), and its appearance in this simplified scalar setting (one of Einstein's precursors to general relativity) leads to significant changes in the spectrum of the self-gravitating theory. Using an iterative technique, we compare the mass dependence of the ground state energies of both Schrodinger-Newton and the new, self-sourced system and find that they are dramatically different. The Bohr method approach from old quantization provides a qualitative description of the difference, which comes from the additional nonlinearity introduced in the self-sourced case. In addition to comparison of ground state energies, we calculate the transition energy between the ground state and first excited state to compare emission frequencies between Schrodinger-Newton and the self-coupled scalar case.

Suppression of Upsilon Production in d+Au and Au+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV

We report measurements of Upsilon meson production in p+p, d+Au, and Au+Au collisions using the STAR detector at RHIC. We compare the Upsilon yield to the measured cross section in p+p collisions in order to quantify any modifications of the yield in cold nuclear matter using d+Au data and in hot nuclear matter using Au+Au data separated into three centrality classes. Our p+p measurement is based on three times the statistics of our previous result. We obtain a nuclear modification factor for Upsilon(1S+2S+3S) in the rapidity range |y|<1 in d+Au collisions of R_dAu = 0.79 +/- 0.24 (stat.) +/- 0.03 (sys.) +/- 0.10 (pp sys.). A comparison with models including shadowing and initial state parton energy loss indicates the presence of additional cold-nuclear matter suppression. Similarly, in the top 10% most-central Au+Au collisions, we measure a nuclear modification factor of R_AA=0.49 +/- 0.1 (stat.) +/- 0.02 (sys.) +/- 0.06 (pp sys.), which is a larger suppression factor than that seen in cold nuclear matter. Our results are consistent with complete suppression of excited-state Upsilon mesons in Au+Au collisions. The additional suppression in Au+Au is consistent with the level expected in model calculations that include the presence of a hot, deconfined Quark-Gluon Plasma. However, understanding the suppression seen in d+Au is still needed before any definitive statements about the nature of the suppression in Au+Au can be made.

Search for the weak decays $J/ψ\to D^{(*)}_{s}eν_{e}$

Using a sample of $2.25\times 10^8$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we search for the $J/ψ$ semi-leptonic weak decay $J/ψ\to D^{-}_{s} e^{+}ν_{e}+c.c.$ with a much higher sensitivity than previous searches. We also perform the first search for $J/ψ\to D^{*-}_{s} e^{+}ν_{e}+c.c.$ No significant excess of a signal above background is observed in either channel. At the $90\%$ confidence level, the upper limits are determined to be $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to D^{-}_{s}e^{+}ν_{e}+c.c.)<1.3\times10^{-6}$ and $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to {D^{*}_{s}}^{-}e^{+}ν_{e}+c.c.)<1.8\times10^{-6}$, respectively. Both are consistent with Standard Model predictions.

Study of J/psi->eta phi pi+pi- at BESIII

Based on a sample of $2.25\times 10^{8} J/ψ$ events taken with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we present the results of a study of the decay $J/ψ\to ηϕπ^{+}π^{-}$. The $Y(2175)$ resonance is observed in the invariant mass spectrum of $ϕf_{0}(980)$ with a statistical significance of greater than $10σ$. The corresponding mass and width are determined to be $M=2200\pm 6 \mathrm{(stat.)} \pm 5\mathrm{(syst.)} \mathrm{MeV}/c^{2}$ and $Γ=104\pm 15\mathrm{(stat.)}\pm 15\mathrm{(syst.)}$ MeV, respectively, and the product branching fraction is measured to be $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\toηY(2175)$, $Y(2175)\to ϕf_{0}(980)$, $f_{0}(980)\to π^{+}π^{-})= (1.20\pm 0.14\mathrm{(stat.)}\pm 0.37 \mathrm{(syst.)})\times 10^{-4}$. The results are consistent within errors with those of previous experiments. We also measure the branching fraction of $J/ψ\to ϕf_1(1285)$ with $f_1(1285)\to ηπ^{+}π^{-}$ and set upper limits on the branching fractions for $J/ψ\to ϕη(1405)$/$ϕX(1835)$/$ϕX(1870)$ with $η(1405)$/$X(1835)$/$X(1870)\to ηπ^{+}π^{-}$ at the 90\% confidence level.

The galaxy stellar mass function at 3.5<z<7.5 in the CANDELS/UDS, GOODS-South, and HUDF fields

The galaxy stellar mass function (GSMF) at high-z provides key information on star-formation history and mass assembly in the young Universe. We aimed to use the unique combination of deep optical/NIR/MIR imaging provided by HST, Spitzer and the VLT in the CANDELS-UDS, GOODS-South, and HUDF fields to determine the GSMF over the redshift range 3.5 4. These results confirm the unique synergy of the CANDELS+HUDF, HUGS, and SEDS surveys for the discovery and study of moderate/low-mass galaxies at high redshifts.

MHD Seismology of a Coronal Loop System by the First Two Modes of Standing Kink Waves

We report the observation of the first two harmonics of the horizontally polarized kink waves excited in a coronal loop system lying at south-east of AR 11719 on 2013 April 11. The detected periods of the fundamental mode ($P_1$), its first overtone ($P_2$) in the northern half, and that in the southern one are $530.2 \pm 13.3$, $300.4 \pm 27.7$, and $334.7 \pm 22.1$ s, respectively. The periods of the first overtone in the two halves are the same considering uncertainties in the measurement. We estimate the average electron density, temperature, and length of the loop system as $(5.1 \pm 0.8) \times 10^8$ cm$^{-3}$, $0.65 \pm 0.06$ MK, and $203.8 \pm 13.8$ Mm, respectively. As a zeroth order estimation, the magnetic field strength, $B = 8.2 \pm 1.0$ G, derived by the coronal seismology using the fundamental kink mode matches with that derived by a potential field model. The extrapolation model also shows the asymmetric and nonuniform distribution of the magnetic field along the coronal loop. Using the amplitude profile distributions of both the fundamental mode and its first overtone, we observe that the antinode positions of both the fundamental mode and its first overtone shift towards the weak field region along the coronal loop. The results indicate that the density stratification and the temperature difference effects are larger than the magnetic field variation effect on the period ratio. On the other hand, the magnetic field variation has a greater effect on the eigenfunction of the first overtone than the density stratification does for this case.

Evidence for $e^+e^-\toγχ_{c1, 2}$ at center-of-mass energies from 4.009 to 4.360 GeV

Using data samples collected at center-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}$ = 4.009, 4.230, 4.260, and 4.360 GeV with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, we perform a search for the process $e^+e^-\toγχ_{cJ}$ $(J = 0, 1, 2)$ and find evidence for $e^+e^-\toγχ_{c1}$ and $e^+e^-\toγχ_{c2}$ with statistical significances of 3.0$σ$ and 3.4$σ$, respectively. The Born cross sections $σ^{B}(e^+e^-\toγχ_{cJ})$, as well as their upper limits at the 90% confidence level are determined at each center-of-mass energy.

$J/ψ$ polarization in p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV in STAR

We report on a polarization measurement of inclusive $J/ψ$ mesons in the di-electron decay channel at mid-rapidity at 2 $<p_{T}<$ 6 GeV/$c$ in $p+p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV. Data were taken with the STAR detector at RHIC. The $J/ψ$ polarization measurement should help to distinguish between different models of the $J/ψ$ production mechanism since they predict different $p_{T}$ dependences of the $J/ψ$ polarization. In this analysis, $J/ψ$ polarization is studied in the helicity frame. The polarization parameter $λ_θ$ measured at RHIC becomes smaller towards high $p_{T}$, indicating more longitudinal $J/ψ$ polarization as $p_{T}$ increases. The result is compared with predictions of presently available models.

Updated Measurement of the Single Top Quark Production Cross Section and $V{tb}$ in the Missing Transverse Energy Plus Jets Topology in $p\bar{p}$ Collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV

An updated measurement of the single top quark production cross section is presented using the full data set collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) and corresponding to 9.5 fb${}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity from proton-antiproton collisions at 1.96 TeV center-of-mass energy. The events selected contain an imbalance in the total transverse energy, jets identified as originating from $b$ quarks, and no identified leptons. The sum of the $s$- and $t$-channel single top quark cross sections is measured to be $3.53_{-1.16}^{+1.25}$ pb and a lower limit on $V_{tb}$ of 0.63 is obtained at the 95% credibility level. These measurements are combined with previously reported CDF results obtained from events with an imbalance in total transverse energy, jets identified as originating from $b$ quarks, and exactly one identified lepton. The combined cross section is measured to be $3.02_{-0.48}^{+0.49}$ pb and a lower limit on $V{tb}$ of 0.84 is obtained at the 95% credibility level.

Observations of $λ/4$ structure in a low-loss radiofrequency-dressed optical lattice

We load a Bose-Einstein condensate into a one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice altered through the use of radiofrequency (rf) dressing. The rf resonantly couples the three levels of the $^{87}$Rb $F=1$ manifold and combines with a spin-dependent "bare" optical lattice to result in adiabatic potentials of variable shape, depth, and spatial frequency content. We choose dressing parameters such that the altered lattice is stable over lifetimes exceeding tens of ms at higher depths than in previous work. We observe significant differences between the BEC momentum distributions of the dressed lattice as compared to the bare lattice, and find general agreement with a 1D band structure calculation informed by the dressing parameters. Previous work using such lattices was limited by very shallow dressed lattices and strong Landau-Zener tunnelling loss between adiabatic potentials, equivalent to failure of the adiabatic criterion. In this work we operate with significantly stronger rf coupling (increasing the avoided-crossing gap between adiabatic potentials), observing dressed lifetimes of interest for optical lattice-based analogue solid-state physics.

Controllable spin-orbit coupling and its influence on the upper critical field in the chemically doped quasi-one-dimensional Nb$_2$PdS$_5$ superconductor

By systematic chemical substitution of Pt and Ni in the newly-discovered superconductor Nb$_2$PdS$_5$ ($T_c\sim$6 K), we study the evolution of its superconducting properties with doping, focussing on the behavior of the upper critical field $H_{c2}$. In contrast to the previous results of Se doping on S sites, superconductivity is found to be rather robust against the Pt and Ni dopants on the one-dimensional Pd chains. Most strikingly, the reduced $H_{c2}$, i.e., the ratio of $H_{c2}/T_c$, is seen to be significantly enhanced by the heavier Pt doping but suppressed in the Ni-doped counterparts, distinct from the nearly constant value in the Se doped samples. Our findings therefore suggest that the upper critical field of this system can be modified in a tunable fashion by chemical doping on the Pd chains with elements of varying mass numbers. The spin-orbit coupling on the Pd sites, by inference, should play an important role in the observed superconductivity and on the large upper critical field beyond the Pauli pair-breaking field.

$J/ψ$ production at low $p_T$ in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV at STAR

The $\jpsi$ $\pt$ spectrum and nuclear modification factor ($\raa$) are reported for $\pt < 5 \ \gevc$ and $|y|<1$ from 0\% to 60\% central Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at $\snn = 200 \ \gev$ at STAR. A significant suppression of $\pt$-integrated $\jpsi$ production is observed in central Au+Au events. The Cu+Cu data are consistent with no suppression, although the precision is limited by the available statistics. $\raa$ in Au+Au collisions exhibits a strong suppression at low transverse momentum and gradually increases with $\pt$. The data are compared to high-$\pt$ STAR results and previously published BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider results. Comparing with model calculations, it is found that the invariant yields at low $\pt$ are significantly above hydrodynamic flow predictions but are consistent with models that include color screening and regeneration.
