Boronization-enabled I-mode on EAST tokamak with an expanded density window and favorable-configuration access

I-mode is a promising confinement regime for future fusion reactors because it combines enhanced energy confinement with L-mode-like particle transport and naturally ELM-free operation. Previous EAST I-mode studies were performed exclusively under lithium-conditioned wall conditions. Here we report the first systematic experimental investigation of I-mode under boronized wall conditions on EAST and compare it with an existing lithium-conditioned I-mode database at the same toroidal field, $B_t = 2.47$\,T. The boronized-wall dataset exhibits a substantially broader accessible density range, with the Greenwald fraction extending from $f_{\mathrm{GW}} = 0.26 - 0.77$ , compared with $f_{\mathrm{GW}} = 0.35 - 0.54$ under lithiation. A higher normalized $\mathrm{D}_α$ emission suggests that enhanced edge recycling may contribute to this density extension. A striking increase in favorable-configuration I-mode is also observed: $51\%$ boronized-wall discharges are obtained in favorable-configuration, compared with only $8\%$ lithium-conditioned discharges. These favorable-configuration cases are concentrated at high density and exhibit a deeper radial electric-field($E_r$) well and stronger $\mathbf{E_r}\times\mathbf{B}$ velocity shear. When ETRO is present, the associated transition between electron and ion turbulence is similar under the two wall conditions, although ETRO occurs less frequently ($15\%$) under boronization. An empirical EAST I-mode energy confinement scaling at fixed $B_t$ is obtained, $τ_E = 3.29 I_p^{0.51 \pm 0.10} P_{\mathrm{loss}}^{-0.53 \pm 0.05} \bar{n}_e^{0.08 \pm 0.07}$, indicating weaker power degradation than IPB98(y,2) H-mode scaling and a weak density dependence. These results show that boronization can broaden the operational space of EAST I-mode and support the development of reactor-relevant ELM-free scenarios.

Study of polarization-dependent band inversions and edge states from two-dimensional square lattice plasmonic crystals

When two topologically trivial and nontrivial systems are brought together, a localized energy state is formed at the interface. For crystalline quantum and classical systems, their topology can be determined by studying the eigenmode symmetries at high symmetry points (HSPs) in the Brillouin zone. As electromagnetic systems are usually leaky, their radiations retain the eigenmode information, thus providing a means for probing the band topology. Here, we formulate the far-field characteristics of the eigenmodes at HSPs in 2D square lattice plasmonic systems and reveals, unlike the conventional tight-binding model, several polarization-dependent band inversions occur at theΓand X points, rendering subtle changes in their band topology. In particular, by carefully tuning the system geometry to facilitate trivial and non-trivial phases, polarization selective 0D and 1D edge states that possess distinct field symmetries are realized. The evolution of 0D or 1D edge state depends on the degree of bulk-edge overlapping. We perform angle- and polarization-resolved diffraction spectroscopy on 2D Au plasmonic nanohole arrays to verify the theory and observe such states. Our study demonstrates the applicability of simple far-field technique for diagnosing the band topology of various crystalline classical systems in electromagnetics and acoustics.

Observation of a cross-section enhancement near mass threshold in $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowΛ\barΛ$

The process $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowΛ\barΛ$ is studied using data samples at $\sqrt{s}=2.2324$, 2.400, 2.800 and 3.080 GeV collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The Born cross section is measured at $\sqrt{s}$=2.2324 GeV, which is 1.0 MeV above the $Λ\barΛ$ mass threshold, to be $305\pm45^{+66}_{-36}$ pb, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The substantial cross section near threshold is significantly larger than that expected from theory, which predicts the cross section to vanish at threshold. The Born cross sections at $\sqrt{s}$=2.400, 2.800 and 3.080 GeV are measured and found to be consistent with previous experimental results, but with improved precision. Finally, the corresponding effective electromagnetic form factors of $Λ$ are deduced.

Measurement of $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow π^{+}π^{-}ψ(3686)$ from 4.008 to 4.600$\sim$GeV and observation of a charged structure in the $π^{\pm}ψ(3686)$ mass spectrum

We study the process $e^{+}e^{-} \rightarrow π^{+}π^{-}ψ(3686)$ using 5.1 $fb^{-1}$ of data collected at 16 center-of-mass energy ($\sqrt{s}$) points from 4.008 to 4.600$\sim$GeV by the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The measured Born cross sections for $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow π^{+}π^{-}ψ(3686)$ are consistent with previous results, but with much improved precision. A fit to the cross section shows contributions from two structures: the first has $M=4209.5\pm7.4\pm1.4$$\sim$MeV/$c^{2}$ and $Γ=80.1\pm24.6\pm2.9$$\sim$MeV, and the second has $M=4383.8\pm4.2\pm0.8$$\sim$MeV/c$^{2}$ and $Γ=84.2\pm12.5\pm2.1$$\sim$MeV, where the first errors are statistical and the second systematic. The lower-mass resonance is observed in the process $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow π^{+}π^{-}ψ(3686)$ for the first time with a statistical significance of $5.8σ$. A charged charmonium-like structure is observed in the $π^{\pm}ψ(3686)$ invariant mass spectrum for data at $\sqrt{s} = 4.416~$GeV. A fit with an $S$-wave Breit-Wigner function yields a mass $M=4032.1\pm2.4$~$MeV$^{2}$, where the errors are statistical only. However, there are still unresolved discrepancies between the fit model and data. The width of the intermediate state varies in a wide range for different kinematic regions within the data set. Therefore no simple interpretation of the data has been found, and a future data sample with larger statistics and more theoretical input will be required to better understand this issue.

Precision Study of $η^\prime\rightarrowγπ^+π^-$ Decay Dynamics

Using a low background data sample of $9.7\times10^{5}$ $Jψ\rightarrowγη^\prime$, $η^\prime\rightarrowγπ^+π^-$ events, which are 2 orders of magnitude larger than those from the previous experiments, recorded with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, the decay dynamics of $η^\prime\rightarrowγπ^+π^-$ are studied with both model-dependent and model-independent approaches. The contributions of $ω$ and the $ρ(770)-ω$ interference are observed for the first time in the decays $η^\prime\rightarrowγπ^+π^-$ in both approaches. Additionally, a contribution from the box anomaly or the $ρ(1450)$ resonance is required in the model-dependent approach, while the process specific part of the decay amplitude is determined in the model-independent approach.

Dark Photon Search in the Mass Range Between 1.5 and 3.4 GeV/$c^2$

Using a data set of 2.93 fb$^{-1}$ taken at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we perform a search for an extra U(1) gauge boson, also denoted as a dark photon. We examine the initial state radiation reactions $e^+e^-\rightarrow e^+e^-γ_{\rm ISR}$ and $e^+e^-\rightarrow μ^+μ^-γ_{\rm ISR}$ for this search, where the dark photon would appear as an enhancement in the invariant mass distribution of the leptonic pairs. We observe no obvious enhancement in the mass range between 1.5 and 3.4 GeV/$c^{2}$ and set a 90% confidence level upper limit on the mixing strength of the dark photon and the Standard Model photon. We obtain a competitive limit in the tested mass range.

Measurement of Singly Cabibbo Suppressed Decays $Λ_c^{+}\to pπ^{+}π^{-}$ and $Λ_c^{+}\to pK^{+}K^{-}$

Using 567 $pb^{-1}$ of data collected with the BESIII detector at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=$ 4.599 $GeV$, near the $Λ_{c}^{+}Λ_{c}^{-}$ threshold, we study the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays $Λ_c^{+}\to pπ^{+}π^{-}$ and $Λ_c^{+}\to pK^{+}K^{-}$. By normalizing with respect to the Cabibbo-favored decay $Λ_c^{+}\to pK^{-}π^{+}$, we obtain ratios of branching fractions: $\frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^{+}\to pπ^{+}π^{-})}{\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^{+}\to pK^{-}π^{+})}$ = $(6.70 \pm 0.48 \pm 0.25)\%$, $\frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^{+}\to pϕ)}{\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^{+}\to pK^{-}π^{+})}$ = $(1.81 \pm 0.33 \pm 0.13)\%$, and $\frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^{+}\to pK^{+}K^{-}_{\text{non-}ϕ})}{\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^{+}\to pK^{-}π^{+})}$ = $(9.36 \pm 2.22 \pm 0.71)\times10^{-3}$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The absolute branching fractions are also presented. Among these measurements, the decay $Λ_c^{+}\to pπ^{+}π^{-}$ is observed for the first time, and the precision of the branching fraction for $Λ_c^{+}\to pK^{+}K^{-}_{\text{non-}ϕ}$ and $Λ_c^{+}\to pϕ$ is significantly improved.

Measurement of the integrated luminosity and the center-of-mass energy of the data taken by BESIII at $\sqrt{s} = 2.125$ GeV

To study the nature of the state $Y(2175)$, a dedicated data set of $e^+e^-$ collision data was collected at the center-of-mass energy of 2.125 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. By analyzing large-angle Bhabha scattering events, the integrated luminosity of this data set is determined to be $108.49\pm0.02\pm0.85$ pb$^{-1}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second one is systematic. In addition, the center-of-mass energy of the data set is determined with radiative dimuon events to be $2126.55\pm0.03\pm0.85$ MeV, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second one is systematic.

Observation of $e^+ e^- \to ηY(2175)$ at center-of-mass energies above 3.7$\sim$GeV

The state $Y(2175)$ is observed in the process $e^+ e^- \to ηY(2175)$ at center-of-mass energies between 3.7 and 4.6$\sim$GeV with a statistical significance larger than $10σ$ using data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. This is the first observation of the $Y(2175)$ in this process. The mass and width of the $Y(2175)$ are determined to be ($2135\pm 8\pm 9$)~MeV/$c^2$ and ($104\pm 24\pm 12$)~MeV, respectively, and the production cross section of $e^+ e^- \to ηY(2175)\to ηϕf_{0}(980)\to ηϕπ^+ π^-$ is at a several hundred femtobarn level. No significant signal for the process $e^+ e^- \to η' Y(2175)$ is observed and the upper limit on $σ(e^+ e^- \to η' Y(2175))/σ(e^+ e^- \to ηY(2175))$ is estimated to be 0.43 at the 90\% confidence level. We also search for $ψ(3686) \to ηY(2175)$. No significant signal is observed, indicating a strong suppression relative to the corresponding $J/ψ$ decay, in violation of the "12\% rule."

Determination of the number of $ψ(3686)$ events at BESIII

The numbers of $ψ(3686)$ events accumulated by the BESIII detector for the two rounds of data taking during 2009 and 2012 are determined to be $(107.0\pm0.8)\times 10^6$ and $(341.1\pm 2.1)\times 10^6$, respectively, by counting inclusive hadronic events, where the uncertainty is dominated by systematics and the statistical uncertainty is negligible. The number of events for the sample taken in 2009 is consistent with that of the previous measurement. The total number of $ψ(3686)$ events for the two data-taking periods is $(448.1\pm2.9)\times10^6$.

Measurement of cross sections of the interactions $e^+e^-\rightarrow ϕϕω$ and $e^+e^-\rightarrow ϕϕϕ$ at center-of-mass energies from 4.008 to 4.600 GeV

Using data samples collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider at six center-of-mass energies between 4.008 and 4.600 GeV, we observe the processes $e^+e^-\rightarrow ϕϕω$ and $e^+e^-\rightarrow ϕϕϕ$. The Born cross sections are measured and the ratio of the cross sections $σ(e^+e^-\rightarrow ϕϕω)/σ(e^+e^-\rightarrow ϕϕϕ)$ is estimated to be $1.75\pm0.22\pm0.19$ averaged over six energy points, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The results represent first measurements of these interactions.

Measurement of branching fractions for $ψ(3686)\rightarrowγη',γη$ and $γπ^{0}$

Using a data sample of $448\times10^{6}$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring, the decays $ψ(3686)\rightarrowγη$ and $ψ(3686)\rightarrowγπ^{0}$ are observed with a statistical significance of $7.3σ$ and $ 6.7σ$, respectively. The branching fractions are measured to be $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3686)\rightarrowγη)=(0.85\pm0.18\pm0.05)\times10^{-6}$ and $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3686)\rightarrowγπ^{0})=(0.95\pm0.16\pm0.05)\times10^{-6}$. In addition, we measure the branching fraction of $ψ(3686)\rightarrowγη'$ to be $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3686)\rightarrowγη')=(125.1\pm2.2\pm6.2)\times 10^{-6}$, with improved precision compared to previous results.

Observation of the doubly radiative decay $η^{\prime}\to γγπ^0$

Based on a sample of $1.31$ billion $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we report the study of the doubly radiative decay $η^\prime\to γγπ^0$ for the first time, where the $η^\prime$ meson is produced via the $J/ψ\to γη^\prime$ decay. The branching fraction of $η^\prime\to γγπ^0$ inclusive decay is measured to be ${\cal B}(η^\prime\to γγπ^0)_{\text{Incl.}}$ = $(3.20\pm0.07\mbox{(stat)}\pm0.23\mbox{(sys)})\times 10^{-3}$, while the branching fractions of the dominant process $η^\prime\rightarrowγω$ and the non-resonant component are determined to be ${\cal B}(η^\prime\to γω)\times {\cal B}(ω\to γπ^0) = (23.7 \pm1.4\mbox{(stat)}\pm1.8\mbox{(sys)})\times 10^{-4}$ and ${\cal B}(η^\prime\to γγπ^0)_{\text{NR}} = (6.16\pm0.64\mbox{(stat)} \pm0.67\mbox{(sys)})\times 10^{-4}$, respectively. In addition, the $M^2_{γγ}$-dependent partial widths of the inclusive decay are also presented.

Observation of $e^{+}e^{-} \to ηh_{c}$ at center-of-mass energies from 4.085 to 4.600 GeV

We observe for the first time the process $e^{+}e^{-} \rightarrow ηh_c$ with data collected by the BESIII experiment. Significant signals are observed at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=4.226$ GeV, and the Born cross section is measured to be $(9.5^{+2.2}_{-2.0} \pm 2.7)$ pb. Evidence for $ηh_c$ is observed at $\sqrt{s}=4.358$ GeV with a Born cross section of $(10.0^{+3.1}_{-2.7} \pm 2.6)$ pb, and upper limits on the production cross section at other center-of-mass energies between 4.085 and 4.600 GeV are determined.

Observation of the helicity-selection-rule suppressed decay of the $χ_{c2}$ charmonium state

The decays of $χ_{c2}\to K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}$, $K_{S} K^{\pm}π^{\mp}$ and $π^{+}π^{-}π^{0}$ are studied with the $ψ(3686)$ data samples collected with the Beijing Spectrometer (BESIII). For the first time, the branching fractions of $χ_{c2}\to K^{\ast}\overline{K}$, $χ_{c2}\to a_{2}^{\pm}(1320)π^{\mp}/a_{2}^{0}(1320)π^{0}$ and $χ_{c2}\to ρ(770)^{\pm}π^{\mp}$ are measured. Here $K^{\ast}\overline{K}$ denotes both $K^{\ast\pm}K^{\mp}$ and $K^{\ast 0}\overline{K}{}^{0}+c.c.$, and $K^{\ast}$ denotes the resonances $K^{\ast}(892)$, $K^{\ast}_{2}(1430)$ and $K^{\ast}_{3}(1780)$. The observations indicate a strong violation of the helicity selection rule in $χ_{c2}$ decays into vector and pseudoscalar meson pairs. The measured branching fractions of $χ_{c2}\to K^{\ast}(892)\overline{K}$ are more than 10 times larger than the upper limit of $χ_{c2}\to ρ(770)^{\pm}π^{\mp}$, which is so far the first direct observation of a significant $U$-spin symmetry breaking effect in charmonium decays.

Determination of spin and parity of the $Z_c(3900)$

The spin and parity of the $Z_c(3900)^\pm$ state are determined to be $J^P=1^+$ with a statistical significance larger than $7σ$ over other quantum numbers in a partial wave analysis of the process $e^+e^-\to π^+π^-J/ψ$. We use a data sample of 1.92 fb$^{-1}$ accumulated at $\sqrt{s}=4.23$ and 4.26 GeV with the BESIII experiment. When parameterizing the $Z_c(3900)^\pm$ with a Flatte-like formula, we determine its pole mass $M_\textrm{pole}=(3881.2\pm4.2_\textrm{stat}\pm52.7_\textrm{syst})\textrm{MeV}/c^2$ and pole width $Γ_\textrm{pole}=(51.8\pm4.6_\textrm{stat}\pm36.0_\textrm{syst})\textrm{MeV}$. We also measure cross sections for the process $e^+e^-\to Z_c(3900)^+π^-+c.c.\to J/ψπ^+π^-$ and determine an upper limit at the 90\% confidence level for the process $e^+e^-\to Z_c(4020)^+π^-+c.c.\to J/ψπ^+π^-$.

Study of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)\rightarrowΣ(1385)^{0}\barΣ(1385)^{0}$ and $Ξ^0\barΞ^{0}$

We study the decays of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ to the final states $Σ(1385)^{0}\barΣ(1385)^{0}$ and $Ξ^0\barΞ^{0}$ based on a single baryon tag method using data samples of $(1310.6 \pm 7.0) \times 10^{6}$ $J/ψ$ and $(447.9 \pm 2.9) \times 10^{6}$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The decays to $Σ(1385)^{0}\barΣ(1385)^{0}$ are observed for the first time. The measured branching fractions of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)\rightarrowΞ^0\barΞ^{0}$ are in good agreement with, and much more precise, than the previously published results. The angular parameters for these decays are also measured for the first time. The measured angular decay parameter for $J/ψ\rightarrowΣ(1385)^{0}\barΣ(1385)^{0}$, $α=-0.64 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.10$, is found to be negative, different to the other decay processes in this measurement. In addition, the "12\% rule" and isospin symmetry in the $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)\rightarrowΞ\barΞ$ and $Σ(1385)\barΣ(1385)$ systems are tested.
