The LAMOST Spectroscopic Survey of Globular Clusters in M 31 and M 33. I. Catalog and new identifications

We present a catalog of 908 objects observed with the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) in the vicinity fields of M31 and M33, targeted as globular clusters (GCs) and candidates. The targets include known GCs and candidates selected from the literature, as well as new candidates selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Analysis shows that 356 of them are likely GCs of various degree of confidence, while the remaining ones turn out to be background galaxies and quasars, stars and HII regions in M31 or foreground Galactic stars. The 356 likely GCs include 298 bona fide GCs and 26 candidates known in the literature. Three candidates selected from the Revised Bologna Catalog of M31 GCs and candidates (RBC) and one possible cluster from Johnson et al. are confirmed to be bona fide clusters. We search for new GCs in the halo of the M31 amongst the new candidates selected from the SDSS photometry. Based on radial velocities yielded by LAMSOT spectra and visual examination of the SDSS images, we find 28 objects, 5 bona fide and 23 likely GCs. Amongst the five bona fide GCs, three have been recently discovered independently by others, the remaining 25 are our new identifications, including two bona fide ones. The new identified objects fall at projected distances ranging from 13 to 265 kpc from M31. Of the two newly discovered bona fide GCs, one is located near M33, probably a GC belonging to M33. The other bona fide GC falls on the Giant Stream with a projected distance of 78 kpc from M31. Of the 23 newly identified likely GCs, one has a projected distance of about 265 kpc from M31 and could be an intergalactic cluster.

The evolution of stellar metallicity gradients of the Milky Way disk from LSS-GAC main sequence turn-off stars: a two-phase disk formation history?

We use 297 042 main sequence turn-off stars selected from the LSS-GAC to determine the radial and vertical gradients of stellar metallicity of the Galactic disk in the anti-center direction. We determine ages of those turn-off stars by isochrone fitting and measure the temporal variations of metallicity gradients. Our results show that the gradients, both in the radial and vertical directions, exhibit significant spatial and temporal variations. The radial gradients yielded by stars of oldest ages (>11 Gyr) are essentially zero at all heights from the disk midplane, while those given by younger stars are always negative. The vertical gradients deduced from stars of oldest ages (>11Gyr) are negative and show only very weak variations with the Galactocentric distance in the disk plane, $R$, while those yielded by younger stars show strong variations with $R$. After being essentially flat at the earliest epochs of disk formation, the radial gradients steepen as age decreases, reaching a maxima (steepest) at age 7-8 Gyr, and then they flatten again. Similar temporal trends are also found for the vertical gradients. We infer that the assemblage of the Milky Way disk may have experienced at least two distinct phases. The earlier phase is probably related to a slow, pressure-supported collapse of gas, when the gas settles down to the disk mainly in the vertical direction. In the later phase, there are significant radial flows of gas in the disk, and the rate of gas inflow near the solar neighborhood reaches a maximum around a lookback time of 7-8 Gyr. The transition of the two phases occurs around a lookback time between 8 and 11 Gyr. The two phases may be responsible for the formation of the Milky Way thick and thin disks, respectively. And, as a consequence, we recommend that stellar age is a natural, physical criterion to distinguish thin and thick disk stars. ... (abridged)

DA white dwarfs from the LSS-GAC survey DR1: the preliminary luminosity and mass functions and formation rate

Modern large-scale surveys have allowed the identification of large numbers of white dwarfs. However, these surveys are subject to complicated target selection algorithms, which make it almost impossible to quantify to what extent the observational biases affect the observed populations. The LAMOST (Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope) Spectroscopic Survey of the Galactic anti-center (LSS-GAC) follows a well-defined set of criteria for selecting targets for observations. This advantage over previous surveys has been fully exploited here to identify a small yet well-characterised magnitude-limited sample of hydrogen-rich (DA) white dwarfs. We derive preliminary LSS-GAC DA white dwarf luminosity and mass functions. The space density and average formation rate of DA white dwarfs we derive are 0.83+/-0.16 x 10^{-3} pc^{-3} and 5.42 +/- 0.08 x 10^{-13} pc^{-3} yr^{-1}, respectively. Additionally, using an existing Monte Carlo population synthesis code we simulate the population of single DA white dwarfs in the Galactic anti-center, under various assumptions. The synthetic populations are passed through the LSS-GAC selection criteria, taking into account all possible observational biases. This allows us to perform a meaningful comparison of the observed and simulated distributions. We find that the LSS-GAC set of criteria is highly efficient in selecting white dwarfs for spectroscopic observations (80-85 per cent) and that, overall, our simulations reproduce well the observed luminosity function. However, they fail at reproducing an excess of massive white dwarfs present in the observed mass function. A plausible explanation for this is that a sizable fraction of massive white dwarfs in the Galaxy are the product of white dwarf-white dwarf mergers.

Thermal and electromagnetic properties of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_8$ intrinsic Josephson junction stacks studied via one-dimensional coupled sine-Gordon equations

We used one-dimensional coupled sine-Gordon equations combined with heat diffusion equations to numerically investigate the thermal and electromagnetic properties of a $300\,μ\mathrm{m}$ long intrinsic Josephson junction stack consisting of $N = 700$ junctions. The junctions in the stack are combined to $M$ segments where we assume that inside a segment all junctions behave identically. Most simulations are for $M = 20$. For not too high bath temperatures there is the appearence of a hot spot at high bias currents. In terms of electromagnetic properties, robust standing wave patterns appear in the current density and electric field distributions. These patterns come together with vortex/antivortex lines across the stack that correspond to $π$ kink states, discussed before in the literature for a homogeneous temperature distribution in the stack. We also discuss scaling of the thermal and electromagnetic properties with $M$, on the basis of simulations with $M$ between 10 and 350.

Search for the $η_c(2S)/h_c\to p\bar{p}$ decays and measurements of the $χ_{cJ}\to p\bar{p}$ branching fractions

Using a sample of $1.06\times10^{8}~ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, the decays $η_{c}(2S)\to p\bar{p}$ and $h_{c}\to p\bar{p}$ are searched for, where $η_c(2S)$ and $h_c$ are reconstructed in the decay chains $ψ(3686)\toγη_{c}(2S)$, $η_{c}(2S)\to p\bar{p}$ and $ψ(3686)\toπ^{0}h_{c}$, $h_{c}\to p\bar{p}$, respectively. No significant signals are observed. The upper limits of the product branching fractions are determined to be $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3686)\toγη_c(2S))\times\mathcal{B}(η_{c}(2S)\to p\bar{p})<1.4\times10^{-6}$ and $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3686)\toπ^0h_c)\times\mathcal{B}(h_{c}\to p\bar{p})<1.3\times10^{-7}$ at the 90% C.L.. The branching fractions for $χ_{cJ}\to p\bar{p}$ $(J=0,~1,~2)$ are also measured to be $(24.5\pm0.8\pm1.3,~8.6\pm0.5\pm0.5,~8.4\pm0.5\pm0.5)\times10^{-5}$, which are the world's most precise measurements.

Dust-to-gas ratio, $X_{\rm CO}$ factor and CO-dark gas in the Galactic anticentre: an observational study

We investigate the correlation between extinction and H~{\sc i} and CO emission at intermediate and high Galactic latitudes ($|b|>10\degr$) within the footprint of the Xuyi Schmidt Telescope Photometric Survey of the Galactic anticentre (XSTPS-GAC) on small and large scales. In Paper I (Chen et al. 2014), we present a three-dimensional dust extinction map within the footprint of XSTPS-GAC, covering a sky area of over 6,000\,deg$^2$ at a spatial angular resolution of 6\,arcmin. In the current work, the map is combined with data from gas tracers, including H~{\sc i} data from the Galactic Arecibo L-band Feed Array H~{\sc i} survey and CO data from the Planck mission, to constrain the values of dust-to-gas ratio $DGR=A_V/N({\rm H})$ and CO-to-$\rm H_2$ conversion factor $X_{\rm CO}=N({\rm H_2})/W_{\rm CO}$ for the entire GAC footprint excluding the Galactic plane, as well as for selected star-forming regions (such as the Orion, Taurus and Perseus clouds) and a region of diffuse gas in the northern Galactic hemisphere. For the whole GAC footprint, we find $DGR=(4.15\pm0.01) \times 10^{-22}$\,$\rm mag\,cm^{2}$ and $X_{\rm CO}=(1.72 \pm 0.03) \times 10^{20}$\,$\rm cm^{-2}\,(K\,km\,s^{-1})^{-1}$. We have also investigated the distribution of "CO-dark" gas (DG) within the footprint of GAC and found a linear correlation between the DG column density and the $V$-band extinction: $N({\rm DG}) \simeq 2.2 \times 10^{21} (A_V - A^{c}_{V})\,\rm cm^{-2}$. The mass fraction of DG is found to be $f_{\rm DG}\sim 0.55$ toward the Galactic anticentre, which is respectively about 23 and 124 per cent of the atomic and CO-traced molecular gas in the same region. This result is consistent with the theoretical work of Papadopoulos et al. but much larger than that expected in the $\rm H_2$ cloud models by Wolfire et al.

Itinerant effects and enhanced magnetic interactions in Bi-based multilayer cuprates

The cuprate high temperature superconductors exhibit a pronounced trend in which the superconducting transition temperature, $T_{\rm c}$, increases with the number of CuO$_2$ planes, $n$, in the crystal structure. We compare the magnetic excitation spectrum of Bi$_{2+x}$Sr$_{2-x}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (Bi-2201) and Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10 + δ}$ (Bi-2223), with $n=1$ and $n=3$ respectively, using Cu $L_3$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). Near the anti-nodal zone boundary we find the paramagnon energy in Bi-2223 is substantially higher than that in Bi-2201, indicating that multilayer cuprates host stronger effective magnetic exchange interactions, providing a possible explanation for the $T_{\rm c}$ vs.\ $n$ scaling. In contrast, the nodal direction exhibits very strongly damped, almost non-dispersive excitations. We argue that this implies that the magnetism in the doped cuprates is partially itinerant in nature.

An integrated low phase noise radiation-pressure-driven optomechanical oscillator chipset

High-quality frequency references are the cornerstones in position, navigation and timing applications of both scientific and commercial domains. Optomechanical oscillators, with direct coupling to continuous-wave light and non-material-limited f Q product, are long regarded as a potential platform for frequency reference in radio-frequency-photonic architectures. However, one major challenge is the compatibility with standard CMOS fabrication processes while maintaining optomechanical high quality performance. Here we demonstrate the monolithic integration of photonic crystal optomechanical oscillators and on-chip high speed Ge detectors based on the silicon CMOS platform. With the generation of both high harmonics (up to 59th order) and subharmonics (down to 1/4), our chipset provides multiple frequency tones for applications in both frequency multipliers and dividers. The phase noise is measured down to -125 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset at ~ 400 μW dropped-in powers, one of the lowest noise optomechanical oscillators to date and in room-temperature and atmospheric non-vacuum operating conditions. These characteristics enable optomechanical oscillators as a frequency reference platform for radio-frequency-photonic information processing.

Coexistence of superconductivity and density wave in $\mathrm{Ba_2Ti_2Fe_2As_4O}$: an optical spectroscopy study

We performed an optical spectroscopy measurement on single crystals of $\mathrm{Ba_2Ti_2Fe_2As_4O}$, which is a newly discovered superconductor showing a coexistence of superconductivity and density wave order. The study reveals a spectral change related to the formation density wave energy gap below $T_{DW}\approx$125 K, leading to the removal of about half of the multiple Fermi surface sheets. The ratio of 2$Δ_{DW}$/$k_B T_{DW}\approx$ 11.9 is considerably larger than the mean-field value based on the weak-coupling BCS theory. At the lowest temperature in the superconducting state, we observed opening of superconducting energy gaps $Δ_1(0) =3.4$ meV and $Δ_2(0)=7.9$ meV. The properties of superconducting state in $\mathrm{Ba_2Ti_2Fe_2As_4O}$ are similar to that in $\mathrm{BaFe_{1.85}Co_{0.15}As_2}$.

Study of e$^+$e$^-$ $\rightarrow \text{p} \overline{\text{p}}π^0$ in the Vicinity of the $ψ\text{(3770)}$

The process $e^+e^-\rightarrow p\overline{p}π^0$ has been studied by analyzing data collected at $\sqrt{s}=3.773$ GeV, at $\sqrt{s}=3.650$ GeV, and during a $ψ(3770)$ line shape scan with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The Born cross section of $p \overline{p} π^0$ in the vicinity of the $ψ(3770)$ is measured and the Born cross section of $ψ(3770)\rightarrow p \overline{p} π^0$ is extracted considering interference between resonant and continuum production amplitudes. Two solutions with the same probability and a significance of 1.5$σ$ are found, and the Born cross section of $ψ(3770)\rightarrow p \overline{p} π^0$ is determined to be less than 0.22 pb at 90% confidence level and $33.8\pm1.8\pm2.1$ pb, respectively. Using the estimated cross section and a constant decay amplitude approximation, the cross section $σ(p\overline{p} \rightarrow ψ(3770) π^0)$ is calculated for the kinematic situation of the planned $\overline{\text{P}}\text{ANDA}$ experiment. The maximum cross section corresponding to the two solutions is expected to be less than $0.79$ nb at 90% confidence level and $122\pm10$ nb at a center of mass energy of 5.26 GeV.

Study of $e^+e^- \rightarrow p\bar{p}$ in the vicinity of $ψ(3770)$

Using 2917 $\rm{pb}^{-1}$ of data accumulated at 3.773~$\rm{GeV}$, 44.5~$\rm{pb}^{-1}$ of data accumulated at 3.65~$\rm{GeV}$ and data accumulated during a $ψ(3770)$ line-shape scan with the BESIII detector, the reaction $e^+e^-\rightarrow p\bar{p}$ is studied considering a possible interference between resonant and continuum amplitudes. The cross section of $e^+e^-\rightarrowψ(3770)\rightarrow p\bar{p}$, $σ(e^+e^-\rightarrowψ(3770)\rightarrow p\bar{p})$, is found to have two solutions, determined to be ($0.059\pm0.032\pm0.012$) pb with the phase angle $ϕ= (255.8\pm37.9\pm4.8)^\circ$ ($<$0.11 pb at the 90% confidence level), or $σ(e^+e^-\rightarrowψ(3770)\rightarrow p\bar{p}) = (2.57\pm0.12\pm0.12$) pb with $ϕ= (266.9\pm6.1\pm0.9)^\circ$ both of which agree with a destructive interference. Using the obtained cross section of $ψ(3770)\rightarrow p\bar{p}$, the cross section of $p\bar{p}\rightarrow ψ(3770)$, which is useful information for the future PANDA experiment, is estimated to be either ($9.8\pm5.7$) nb ($<17.2$ nb at 90% C.L.) or $(425.6\pm42.9)$ nb.

Exponential Convergence Towards Stationary States for the 1D Porous Medium Equation with Fractional Pressure

We analyse the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to the one dimensional fractional version of the porous medium equation introduced by Caffarelli and Vázquez, where the pressure is obtained as a Riesz potential associated to the density. We take advantage of the displacement convexity of the Riesz potential in one dimension to show a functional inequality involving the entropy, entropy dissipation, and the Euclidean transport distance. An argument by approximation shows that this functional inequality is enough to deduce the exponential convergence of solutions in self-similar variables to the unique steady states.

Precision Measurement of the Mass of the $τ$ Lepton

An energy scan near the $τ$ pair production threshold has been performed using the BESIII detector. About $24$ pb$^{-1}$ of data, distributed over four scan points, was collected. This analysis is based on $τ$ pair decays to $ee$, $eμ$, $eh$, $μμ$, $μh$, $hh$, $eρ$, $μρ$ and $πρ$ final states, where $h$ denotes a charged $π$ or $K$. The mass of the $τ$ lepton is measured from a maximum likelihood fit to the $τ$ pair production cross section data to be $m_τ = (1776.91\pm0.12 ^{+0.10}_{-0.13}$) MeV/$c^2$, which is currently the most precise value in a single measurement.

Search for the radiative transitions $ψ(3770)\toγη_c$ and $γη_c(2S)$

By using a 2.92 fb$^{-1}$ data sample taken at $\sqrt{s} = 3.773$ GeV with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, we search for the radiative transitions $ψ(3770)\toγη_c$ and $γη_c(2S)$ through the hadronic decays $η_c(η_c(2S))\to K^0_SK^\pmπ^\mp$. No significant excess of signal events above background is observed. We set upper limits at a 90% confidence level for the product branching fractions to be $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3770)\toγη_c)\times \mathcal{B}(η_c\to K^0_SK^\pmπ^\mp) < 1.6\times10^{-5}$ and $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3770)\toγη_c(2S))\times \mathcal{B}(η_c(2S)\to K^0_SK^\pmπ^\mp) < 5.6\times10^{-6}$. Combining our result with world-average values of $\mathcal{B}(η_c(η_c(2S))\to K^0_SK^\pmπ^\mp)$, we find the branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3770)\toγη_c) < 6.8\times10^{-4}$ and $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3770)\toγη_c(2S)) < 2.0\times10^{-3}$ at a 90% confidence level.

A three dimensional extinction map of the Galactic Anticentre from multi-band photometry

We present a three dimensional extinction map in $r$ band. The map has a spatial angular resolution, depending on latitude, between 3 -- 9\,arcmin and covers the entire XSTPS-GAC survey area of over 6,000\,$\rm deg^2$ for Galactic longitude $\rm 140 \leq$ $l$ $ \leq 220°$ and latitude $\rm -40\leq$ $b$ $ \leq 40°$. By cross-matching the photometric catalog of the Xuyi Schmidt Telescope Photometric Survey of the Galactic Anticentre (XSTPS-GAC) with those of 2MASS and WISE, we have built a multi-band photometric stellar sample of about 30 million stars and applied spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting to the sample. By combining photometric data from the optical to the near-infrared, we are able to break the degeneracy between the intrinsic stellar colours and the amounts of extinction by dust grains for stars with high photometric accuracy, and trace the extinction as a function of distance for low Galactic latitude and thus highly extincted regions. This has allowed us to derive the best-fit extinction and distance information of more than 13 million stars, which are used to construct the three dimensional extinction map. We have also applied a Rayleigh-Jeans colour excess (RJCE) method to the data using the 2MASS and WISE colour $(H-W2)$. The resulting RJCE extinction map is consistent with the integrated two dimensional map deduced using the best-fit SED algorithm. However for individual stars, the amounts of extinction yielded by the RJCE method suffer from larger errors than those given by the best-fit SED algorithm.

Measurement of the $D\to K^-π^+$ strong phase difference in $ψ(3770)\to D^0\overline{D}{}^0$

We study $D^0\overline{D}{}^0$ pairs produced in $e^+e^-$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=3.773$ GeV using a data sample of 2.92 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the BESIII detector. We measure the asymmetry $\mathcal{A}^{CP}_{Kπ}$ of the branching fractions of $D \to K^-π^+$ in $CP$-odd and $CP$-even eigenstates to be $(12.7\pm1.3\pm0.7)\times10^{-2}$. $\mathcal{A}^{CP}_{Kπ}$ can be used to extract the strong phase difference $δ_{Kπ}$ between the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed process $\overline{D}{}^{0}\to K^-π^+$ and the Cabibbo-favored process $D^0\to K^- π^+$. Using world-average values of external parameters, we obtain $\cosδ_{Kπ} = 1.02\pm0.11\pm0.06\pm0.01$. Here, the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively, while the third uncertainty arises from the external parameters. This is the most precise measurement of $δ_{Kπ}$ to date.

Precision measurements of $B(D^+ \rightarrow μ^+ ν_μ)$, the pseudoscalar decay constant $f_{D^+}$, and the quark mixing matrix element $|V_{\rm cd}|$

We report a measurement of the branching fraction $B(D^+ \rightarrow μ^+ ν_μ) = [3.71 \pm 0.19 (\rm stat) \pm 0.06 (\rm sys)]\times 10^{-4}$ based on 2.92 ${\rm fb^{-1}}$ of data accumulated at $\sqrt{s}=3.773$ GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. This measurement, in conjunction with the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{\rm cd}|$ determined from a global Standard Model fit, implies a value for the weak decay constant $f_{D^+}=(203.2 \pm 5.3 \pm 1.8)$ MeV. Additionally, using this branching fraction measurement together with a Lattice QCD prediction for $f_{D^+}$, we find $|V_{\rm cd}|=0.2210\pm 0.0058 \pm 0.0047$. In either case, these are the most precise results for these quantities to date.
