Measurement of the branching fraction for $ψ(3686)\toωK^+ K^-$

With $1.06\times 10^8$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector, the branching fraction of $ψ(3686) \to ωK^+ K^-$ is measured to be $(1.54 \pm 0.04 \pm 0.11) \times 10^{-4}$. This is the most precise result to date, due to the largest $ψ(3686)$ sample, improved signal reconstruction efficiency, good simulation of the detector performance, and a more accurate knowledge of the continuum contribution. Using the branching fraction of $J/ψ\to ωK^+ K^-$, the ratio $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3868) \to K^+K^-) / \mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to K^+K^-)$ is determined to be $(18.4 \pm 3.7)\,\%$. This constitutes a significantly improved test of the $12\,\%$ rule, with the uncertainty now dominated by the $J/ψ$ branching fraction.

Observation of Electromagnetic Dalitz decays J/ψ\to P e^+e^-

Based on a sample of (225.3\pm2.8)\times 10^{6} J/ψevents collected with the BESIII detector, the electromagnetic Dalitz decays of J/ψ\to P e^+e^-(P=η'/η/π^0) are studied. By reconstructing the pseudoscalar mesons in various decay modes, the decays J/ψ\to η' e^+e^-, J/ψ\to ηe^+e^- and J/ψ\to π^0 e^+e^- are observed for the first time. The branching fractions are determined to be \mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to η' e^+e^-) = (5.81\pm0.16\pm0.31)\times10^{-5}, \mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to ηe^+e^-) = (1.16\pm0.07\pm0.06)\times10^{-5}, and \mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to π^0 e^+e^-)=(7.56\pm1.32\pm0.50)\times10^{-7}, where the first errors are statistical and the second ones systematic.

Observation of $η^{\prime}\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{-}$ and $η^{\prime}\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{0}π^{0}$

Using a sample of $1.3\times 10^9$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we report the first observation of $η^{\prime}\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{-}$ and $η^{\prime}\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{0}π^{0}$. The measured branching fractions are $\mathcal{B}$($η^{\prime}\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{-}$) = $(8.53\pm0.69({\rm stat.})\pm0.64({\rm syst.}))\times10^{-5}$ and $\mathcal{B}$($η^{\prime}\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{0}π^{0}$) = $(1.82\pm0.35({\rm stat.})\pm0.18({\rm syst.}))\times10^{-4}$, which are consistent with theoretical predictions based on a combination of chiral perturbation theory and vector-meson dominance.

Geo-neutrinos and Earth Models

We present the current status of geo-neutrino measurements and their implications for radiogenic heating in the mantle. Earth models predict different levels of radiogenic heating and, therefore, different geo-neutrino fluxes from the mantle. Seismic tomography reveals features in the deep mantle possibly correlated with radiogenic heating and causing spatial variations in the mantle geo-neutrino flux at the Earth surface. An ocean-based observatory offers the greatest sensitivity to the mantle flux and potential for resolving Earth models and mantle features. Refinements to estimates of the geo-neutrino flux from continental crust reduce uncertainty in measurements of the mantle flux, especially measurements from land-based observatories. These refinements enable the resolution of Earth models using the combined measurements from multiple continental observatories.

Search for the rare decays $J/ψ\to D_s^-ρ^+$ and $J/ψ\to \overline{D}{}^0\overline{K}{}^{\ast0}$

A search for the rare decays of $J/ψ\to D_s^-ρ^+ + c.c.$ and $J/ψ\to \overline{D}{}^0\overline{K}{}^{\ast0} + c.c.$ is performed with a data sample of 225.3 million $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector. No evident signal is observed. Upper limits on the branching fractions are determined to be $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to D_s^-ρ^+ + c.c.) < 1.3 \times 10^{-5}$ and $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to \overline{D}{}^0\overline{K}{}^{\ast0} + c.c.) < 2.5 \times 10^{-6}$ at the $90\%$ confidence level.

Observation of a charged charmoniumlike structure in $e^+e^- \to (D^{*} \bar{D}^{*})^{\pm} π^\mp$ at $\sqrt{s}=4.26$GeV

We study the process $e^+e^- \to (D^{*} \bar{D}^{*})^{\pm} π^\mp$ at a center-of-mass energy of 4.26GeV using a 827pb$^{-1}$ data sample obtained with the BESIII detector at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider. Based on a partial reconstruction technique, the Born cross section is measured to be $(137\pm9\pm15)$pb. We observe a structure near the $(D^{*} \bar{D}^{*})^{\pm}$ threshold in the $π^\mp$ recoil mass spectrum, which we denote as the $Z^{\pm}_c(4025)$. The measured mass and width of the structure are $(4026.3\pm2.6\pm3.7)$MeV/c$^2$ and $(24.8\pm5.6\pm7.7)$MeV, respectively. Its production ratio $\frac{σ(e^+e^-\to Z^{\pm}_c(4025)π^\mp \to (D^{*} \bar{D}^{*})^{\pm} π^\mp)}{σ(e^+e^-\to (D^{*} \bar{D}^{*})^{\pm} π^\mp)}$ is determined to be $0.65\pm0.09\pm0.06$. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic.

HST and LAMOST discover a dual active galactic nucleus in J0038+4128

We report the discovery of a kiloparsec-scale dual active galactic nucleus (AGN) in J0038+4128. From the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Planetary Camera (WFPC2) images, we find two optical nuclei with a projection separation of 4.7 kpc (3.44 arcsec). The southern component (J0038+4128S) is spectroscopically observed with the HST Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph in the UV range and is found to be a Seyfert 1 galaxy with a broad Ly alpha emission line. The northern component (J0038+4128N) is spectroscopically observed during the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fibre Spectroscopic Telescope (also named the Guoshoujing Telescope) pilot survey in the optical range. The observed line ratios as well as the consistency of redshift of the nucleus emission lines and the host galaxy's absorption lines indicate that J0038+4128N is a Seyfert 2 galaxy with narrow lines only. These results thus confirm that J0038+4128 is a Seyfert 1-Seyfert 2 AGN pair. The HST WFPC2 F336W/U-band image of J0038+4128 also reveals for the first time for a dual AGN system two pairs of bi-symmetric arms, as are expected from the numerical simulations of such system. Being one of a few confirmed kiloparsec-scale dual AGNs exhibiting a clear morphological structure of the host galaxies, J0038+4128 provides an unique opportunity to study the co-evolution of the host galaxies and their central supermassive black holes undergoing a merging process.

Revealing multiple density wave orders in non-superconducting titanium oxypnictide Na$_2$Ti$_2$As$_2$O

We report an optical spectroscopy study on the single crystal of Na$_2$Ti$_2$As$_2$O, a sister compound of superconductor BaTi$_2$Sb$_2$O. The study reveals unexpectedly two density wave phase transitions. The first transition at 320 K results in the formation of a large energy gap and removes most part of the Fermi surfaces. But the compound remains metallic with residual itinerant carriers. Below 42 K, another density wave phase transition with smaller energy gap scale occurs and drives the compound into semiconducting ground state. These experiments thus enable us to shed light on the complex electronic structure in the titanium oxypnictides.

Systematic study of the symmetry energy coefficient in finite nuclei

The symmetry energy coefficients in finite nuclei have been studied systematically with a covariant density functional theory (DFT) and compared with the values calculated using several available mass tables. Due to the contamination of shell effect, the nuclear symmetry energy coefficients extracted from the binding energies have large fluctuations around the nuclei with double magic numbers. The size of this contamination is shown to be smaller for the nuclei with larger isospin value. After subtracting the shell effect with the Strutinsky method, the obtained nuclear symmetry energy coefficients with different isospin values are shown to decrease smoothly with the mass number $A$ and are subsequently fitted to the relation $\dfrac{4a_{\rm sym}}{A}=\dfrac{b_v}{A}-\dfrac{b_s}{A^{4/3}}$. The resultant volume $b_v$ and surface $b_s$ coefficients from axially deformed covariant DFT calculations are $121.73$ and $197.98$ MeV respectively. The ratio $b_s/b_v=1.63$ is in good agreement with the value derived from the previous calculations with the non-relativistic Skyrme energy functionals. The coefficients $b_v$ and $b_s$ corresponding to several available mass tables are also extracted. It is shown that there is a strong linear correlation between the volume $b_v$ and surface $b_s$ coefficients and the ratios $b_s/b_v$ are in between $1.6-2.0$ for all the cases.

Amplitude Analysis of the $D^+ \to K^0_S π^+ π^0$ Dalitz Plot

We perform an analysis of the $D^+ \to K^0_S π^+ π^0$ Dalitz plot using a data set of 2.92 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collisions at the $ψ(3770)$ mass accumulated by the BESIII Experiment, in which 166694 candidate events are selected with a background of 15.1%. The Dalitz plot is found to be well-represented by a combination of six quasi-two-body decay channels ($K^0_Sρ^+$, $K^0_Sρ(1450)^+$, $\overline{K}^{*0}π^+$, $\overline{K}_0(1430)^0π^+$, $\overline{K}(1680)^0π^+$, $\overlineκ^0π^+$) plus a small non-resonant component. Using the fit fractions from this analysis, partial branching ratios are updated with higher precision than previous measurements.

Observation of a charged charmoniumlike structure Z_c(4020) and search for the Z_c(3900) in e+e- to pi+pi-h_c

We study e+e- --> pi+pi-h_c at center-of-mass energies from 3.90 GeV to 4.42 GeV using data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider. The Born cross sections are measured at 13 energies, and are found to be of the same order of magnitude as those of e+e- --> pi+pi-J/psi but with a different line shape. In the π^\pm h_c mass spectrum, a distinct structure, referred to as Z_c(4020), is observed at 4.02 GeV/c^2. The Z_c(4020) carries an electric charge and couples to charmonium. A fit to the π^\pm h_c invariant mass spectrum, neglecting possible interferences, results in a mass of (4022.9\pm 0.8\pm 2.7) MeV/c^2 and a width of (7.9\pm 2.7\pm 2.6) MeV for the Z_c(4020), where the first errors are statistical and the second systematic. No significant Z_c(3900) signal is observed, and upper limits on the Z_c(3900) production cross sections in π^\pm h_c at center-of-mass energies of 4.23 and 4.26 GeV are set.

Observation of a structure at 1.84 GeV/c$^2$ in the $3(π^+π^-)$ mass spectrum in $J/ψ\rightarrow γ3(π^+π^-)$ decays

With a sample of 225.3 million $J/ψ$ events taken with the BESIII detector, the decay $J/ψ\rightarrow γ3(π^+π^-)$ is analyzed. A structure at 1.84 GeV/c$^2$ is observed in the $3(π^+π^-)$ invariant mass spectrum with a statistical significance of 7.6$σ$ . The mass and width are measured to be $M=1842.2\pm 4.2^{+7.1}_{-2.6}$ MeV/c$^2$ and $Γ=83\pm 14 \pm 11$ MeV. The product branching fraction is determined to be $B(J/ψ\rightarrowγX(1840))\times B(X(1840)\rightarrow 3(π^+π^-))=(2.44\pm0.36^{+0.60}_{-0.74})\times 10^{-5}$. No $η^\prime$ signals are observed in the $3(π^+π^-)$ invariant mass spectrum, and the upper limit of the branching fraction for the decay $η^\prime\rightarrow 3(π^+π^-)$ is set to be $3.1\times10^{-5}$ at a 90% confidence level.

Scaling of electrical and thermal conductivities in an almost integrable chain

Many low-dimensional materials are well described by integrable one-dimensional models such as the Hubbard model of electrons or the Heisenberg model of spins. However, the small perturbations to these models required to describe real materials are expected to have singular effects on transport quantities: integrable models often support dissipationless transport, while weak non-integrable terms lead to finite conductivities. We use matrix-product-state methods to obtain quantitative values of spin/electrical and thermal conductivities in an almost integrable gapless chain (an XXZ spin chain with staggered fields, or equivalently a spinless fermion chain with staggered on-site potentials). The results at low temperatures validate a scaling theory based on bosonization.

Nonlinear stability of flock solutions in second-order swarming models

In this paper we consider interacting particle systems which are frequently used to model collective behavior in animal swarms and other applications. We study the stability of orientationally aligned formations called flock solutions, one of the typical patterns emerging from such dynamics. We provide an analysis showing that the nonlinear stability of flocks in second-order models entirely depends on the linear stability of the first-order aggregation equation. Flocks are shown to be nonlinearly stable as a family of states under reasonable assumptions on the interaction potential. Furthermore, we numerically verify that commonly used potentials satisfy these hypotheses and investigate the nonlinear stability of flocks by an extensive case-study of uniform perturbations.

Modeling the linewidth dependence of coherent terahertz emission from intrinsic Josephson junction stacks in the hot-spot regime

Recently it has been found that, when operated at large input power, the linewidth of terahertz radiation emitted from intrinsic Josephson junction stacks can be as narrow as some megahertz. In this high-bias regime a hot spot coexists with regions which are still superconducting. Surprisingly, the linewidth was found to decrease with increasing bath temperature. We present a simple model describing the dynamics of the stack in the presence of a hot spot by two parallel arrays of pointlike Josephson junctions and an additional shunt resistor in parallel. Heat diffusion is taken into account by thermally coupling all elements to a bath at temperature T_b. We present current-voltage characteristics of the coupled system and calculations of the linewidth of the radiation as a function of T_b. In the presence of a spatial gradient of the junction parameters critical current and resistance, the linewidth deceases with increasing T_b, similar to the experimental observation.

Precision Measurements of ${\cal B}[ψ(3686) \to π^+π^- J/ψ]$ and ${\cal B}[J/ψ\to l^+l^-]$

Based on $(106.41 \pm 0.86)\times 10^{6}$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the branching fractions of $ψ(3686) \to π^+π^- J/ψ$, $J/ψ\to e^+e^- $, and $J/ψ\to μ^+μ^-$ are measured. We obtain ${\cal B}[ψ(3686) \to π^+π^-J/ψ]=(34.98\pm 0.02\pm 0.45)%$, ${\cal B}[J/ψ\to e^+e^-] = (5.983 \pm 0.007 \pm 0.037)%$ and ${\cal B}[J/ψ\to μ^+μ^-] = (5.973 \pm 0.007 \pm 0.038)%$. The measurement of ${\cal B}[ψ(3686) \to π^{+}π^{-}J/ψ]$ confirms the CLEO-c measurement, and is apparently larger than the others. The measured $J/ψ$ leptonic decay branching fractions agree with previous experiments within one standard deviation. These results lead to ${\cal B}[J/ψ\to l^+l^-] = (5.978 \pm 0.005 \pm 0.040)%$ by averaging over the $e^{+}e^{-}$ and $μ^{+}μ^{-}$ channels and a ratio of ${\cal B}[J/ψ\to e^+e^-] / {\cal B}[J/ψ\to μ^+μ^-] = 1.0017 \pm 0.0017 \pm 0.0033$, which tests $e$-$μ$ universality at the four tenths of a percent level. All the measurements presented in this paper are the most precise in the world to date.

LSS-GAC - A LAMOST Spectroscopic Survey of the Galactic Anti-center

As a major component of the LAMOST Galactic surveys, the LAMOST Spectroscopic Survey of the Galactic Anti-center (LSS-GAC) will survey a significant volume of the Galactic thin/thick disks and halo in a contiguous sky area of ~ 3,400sq.deg., centered on the Galactic anti-center (|b| <= 30°, 150 <= l <= 210°), and obtain λλ3800--9000 low resolution (R ~ 1,800) spectra for a statistically complete sample of >= 3M stars of all colors, uniformly and randomly selected from (r, g - r) and (r, r - i) Hess diagrams obtained from a CCD imaging photometric survey of ~ 5,400sq.deg. with the Xuyi 1.04/1.20 m Schmidt Telescope, ranging from r = 14.0 to a limiting magnitude of r = 17.8 (18.5 for limited fields). The survey will deliver spectral classification, radial velocity Vr and stellar parameters (effective temperature Teff, surface gravity log g and metallicity [Fe/H]) for millions of Galactic stars. Together with Gaia which will provide accurate distances and tangential velocities for a billion stars, the LSS-GAC will yield a unique dataset to study the stellar populations, chemical composition, kinematics and structure of the disks and their interface with the halo, identify streams of debris of tidally disrupted dwarf galaxies and clusters, probe the gravitational potential and dark matter distribution, map the 3D distribution of interstellar dust extinction, search for rare objects (e.g. extremely metal-poor or hyper-velocity stars), and ultimately advance our understanding of the assemblage of the Milky Way and other galaxies and the origin of regularity and diversity of their properties. ... Surface and Bulk Electronic Structure of the Strongly Correlated System SmB$_{6}$ and Implications for a Topological Kondo Insulator

Recent theoretical calculations and experimental results suggest that the strongly correlated material SmB$_{6}$ may be a realization of a topological Kondo insulator. We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study on SmB$_{6}$ in order to elucidate elements of the electronic structure relevant to the possible occurrence of a topological Kondo insulator state. The obtained electronic structure in the whole three-dimensional momentum space reveals one electron-like 5d bulk band centred at the X point of the bulk Brillouin zone that is hybridized with strongly correlated f electrons, as well as the opening of a Kondo bandgap ($Δ_B$ $\sim$ 20 meV) at low temperature. In addition, we observe electron-like bands forming three Fermi surfaces at the center $\barΓ$ point and boundary $\bar{X}$ point of the surface Brillouin zone. These bands are not expected from calculations of the bulk electronic structure, and their observed dispersion characteristics are consistent with surface states. Our results suggest that the unusual low-temperature transport behavior of SmB$_{6}$ is likely to be related to the pronounced surface states sitting inside the band hybridisation gap and/or the presence of a topological Kondo insulating state.
