Structural and electrical transport properties of superconducting Au{0.7}In{0.3} films: A random array of superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) Josephson junctions

The structural and superconducting properties of Au{0.7}In{0.3} films, grown by interdiffusion of alternating Au and In layers, have been studied. The films were found to consist of a uniform solid solution of Au{0.9}In{0.1}, with excess In precipitated in the form of In-rich grains of various Au-In phases (with distinct atomic compositions), including intermetallic compounds. As the temperature was lowered, these individual grains became superconducting at a particular transition temperature (Tc), determined primarily by the atomic composition of the grain, before a fully superconducting state of zero resistance was established. From the observed onset Tc, it was inferred that up to three different superconducting phases could have formed in these Au{0.7}In{0.3} films, all of which were embedded in a uniform Au{0.9}In{0.1} matrix. Among these phases, the Tc of a particular one, 0.8 K, is higher than any previously reported for the Au-In system. The electrical transport properties were studied down to low temperatures. The transport results were found to be well correlated with those of the structural studies. The present work suggests that Au{0.7}In{0.3} can be modeled as a random array of superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) Josephson junctions. The effect of disorder and the nature of the superconducting transition in these Au{0.7}In{0.3} films are discussed.

Fractional-flux Little-Parks resistance oscillations in disordered superconducting Au$_{0.7}$In$_{0.3}$ cylinders

Resistance of disordered superconducting Au$_{0.7}$In$_{0.3}$ cylindrical films was measured as a function of applied magnetic field. In the high-temperature part of the superconducting transition regime, the resistance oscillated with a period of $h/2e$ in the unit of the enclosed magnetic flux. However, at lower temperatures, the resistance peaks split. We argue that this splitting is due to the emergence of an oscillation with a period of $h/4e$, half of the flux quantum for paired electrons. The possible physical origin of the $h/4e$ resistance oscillation is discussed in the context of new minima in the free energy of a disordered superconducting cylinder.

Geometrical destruction of the global phase coherence in ultrathin superconducting cylinders

The global phase coherence in doubly-connected superconductors leads to fluxoid quantization, allowing the superfluid velocity vs to be controlled by an applied magnetic flux. In ultrasmall samples this quantization requirement leads, surprisingly, to the destruction of the phase coherence itself around half-integer flux quanta, because of the sample-size-induced growth in vs, as predicted by de Gennes. We report observations of the predicted phenomenon in ultrathin Al and Au0.7In0.3 cylinders, and the corresponding phase diagram for ultrathin superconducting cylinders. The new phase diagram features disconnected superconducting regions, as opposed to the single one seen in the conventional Little-Parks experiment.

Observation of Andreev Surface Bound States in the 3-K phase Region of Sr_2RuO_4

The tunneling spectrum of the superconducting phase with T_c ~ 3.0 K has been measured in the Ru-embedded region of Sr_2RuO_4 using cleaved junctions. A sharp zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) has been observed below 3 K. All characteristics of this ZBCP suggest that it originates from Andreev surface bound states, indicating that the pairing in the 3-K phase is also non-s-wave. Below the bulk T_c of Sr_2RuO_4 (~1.5 K), a bell-shaped ZBCP was found. This supports that there is a phase transition in the 3-K phase region near the bulk T_c.

Electrical Transport Properties of Single Crystal Sr3Ru2O7: The Possible Existence of an Antiferromagnetic Instability at Low Temperatures

We report the results of Hall coefficient R_H and magnetoresistance (MR) measurements on single crystalline samples of Sr3Ru2O7 grown by the floating zone method. R_H was found to be positive over the entire temperature range studied (0.3 - 300K). Its temperature (T) dependence follows closely that of the magnetic susceptibility, including a maximum at a characteristic temperature T=17 K. We show that R_H can be decomposed into normal and anomalous parts as in the case of skew scattering in heavy-fermion compounds and ferromagnetic metals. This, together with the observation that the longitudinal MR is greater than the transverse MR at the same magnetic field and temperature, suggests that magnetic fluctuations dominate the electrical transport properties in Sr3Ru2O7. We found a crossover in the sign of the MR at T*, from positive to negative as the temperature increased, for both the transverse and the longitudinal configurations. In addition, a non-monotonic behavior in the field dependence of the MR was found at low temperatures. These observations suggest that the magnetic correlations in Sr3Ru2O7 at ambient pressure undergo a qualitative change as the temperature is lowered. Above T*, they are dominated by ferromagnetic instability. However, below T*, the system crosses over to a different behavior, controlled possibly by a canted antiferromagnetic instability.

Magnetic Fingerprints in Superconducting Au$_{0.7}$In$_{0.3}$ Cylinders

Reproducible, sample-specific magnetoresistance fluctuations (magnetic fingerprints) were observed in the low-temperature part of the superconducting transition regime of hollow Au$_{0.7}$In$_{0.3}$ cylinders of submicron diameter. The amplitude of the fluctuations was found to exceed that of the universal conductance fluctuation in normal metals by several orders of magnitude. The physical origin of these observations is related to mesoscopic fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter.

Chemical potential response of meson masses at finite temperature

We study the response of meson masses to the chemical potential ($\partial{m}/\partialμ$) at high temperature and at zero chemical potential on $N_f=2$ lattice with staggered fermions. Preliminary results for the meson composed of different quarks show that $\partial{m}/\partialμ|_{μ=0}$ is negative in the confinement phase and positive in the deconfinement phase.

Simulation of SU(2) Dynamical Fermion at Finite Chemical Potential and at Finite Temperature

SU(2) lattice gauge theory with dynamical fermion at non-zero chemical potential and at finite temperature is studied. We focus on the influence of chemical potential for quark condensate and mass of pseudoscalar meson at finite temperature. Hybrid Monte Carlo simulations with $N_f=8$ staggered fermions are carried out on $12 \times 12\times 24 \times 4$ lattice. At $β=1.1$ and $m_{q}=$0.05,0.07,0.1, we calculate the quark condensate and masses of pseudoscalar meson consisting of light and heavier quarks for chemical potential $μ=$ 0.0,0.02,0.05,0.1,0.2.

Observation of Magnetic Fingerprints in Superconducting Au_0.7In_0.3 Cylinders

Reproducible, sample-specific magnetoresistance fluctuations (magnetic fingerprints) have been observed experimentally in the low-temperature part of the superconducting transition regime of disordered superconducting Au_0.7In_0.3 cylinders. The amplitude of the fluctuation was found to exceed that of the universal conductance fluctuation in normal metals by several orders of magnitude. The physical origin of these observations is discussed in the context of mesoscopic fluctuations of the superconducting condensation energy in disordered superconductors.

Selection Rule in Josephson Coupling between In and Sr2RuO4

We have studied the Josephson coupling between a conventional s-wave superconductor (In) and Sr2RuO4 and found that the coupling is allowed in the in-plane direction, but not along the c axis. This selection rule indicates that the symmetry of superconducting order parameter of Sr2RuO4 is either p- or alternatively, purely d-wave. If Sr2RuO4 is a p-wave superconductor, as strongly favored by other experimental evidence, our result suggests that the pairing state of Sr2RuO4 is Gamma5 with d(k) = z(kx +/- iky), a nodeless state in which the spins of the superconducting electrons lie in the RuO2 planes.

Linear Field Dependence of the Normal-State In-Plane Magnetoresistance of Sr2RuO4

The transverse and longitudinal in-plane magnetoresistances in the normal state of superconducting Sr2RuO4 single crystals have been measured. At low temperatures, both of them were found to be positive with a linear magnetic-field dependence above a threshold field, a result not expected from electronic band theory. We argue that such behavior is a manifestation of a novel coherent state characterized by a spin pseudo gap in the quasi-particle excitation spectrum in Sr2RuO4.
