Status of head-on beam-beam compensation in RHIC

In polarized proton operation, the performance of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) is limited by the head-on beam-beam effect. To overcome this limitation, two electron lenses are under commissioning. We give an overview of head-on beam-beam compensation in general and in the specific design for RHIC, which is based on electron lenses. The status of installation and commissioning are presented along with plans for the future.

In-situ microwave characterization of ferromagnetic microwires-filled polymer composites: a review

This review describes the emerging research area and relevant physics of polymer-based composites enabled by amorphous ferromagnetic microwires. Fruitful results ranging from their tunable magnetic field and mechanical stress properties and influences of direct current on their microwave behavior are displayed in addition to the brief analysis on the underlying physics. The multifunctionalities exhibited strongly imply a variety of potential applications such as structural health monitoring and high-performance sensors. This article underlines that the future challenge mainly lies in proper microwire tailoring in expectation of a better microwave performance of microwire composites

Dual-band metacomposites containing hybrid Fe and Co-based ferromagnetic microwires

We investigated the microwave properties of polymer based metacomposites containing hybridized parallel Fe- and Co-based microwire arrays. A dual-band left-handed feature was observed in the frequency bands of 1.5 to 5.5 GHz and 9 to 17 GHz, indicated by two transmission windows associated with ferromagnetic resonance of Fe-based microwires and long range dipolar resonance between the wire arrays. The plasma frequency after hybridization is significantly increased due to the enhanced effective diameter through the wire-wire interactions between the Fe- and Co- microwire couples. These results offer essential perspectives in designing the multi-band metamaterial for microwave applications such as sensors and cloaking devices.

Metacomposite characteristics and their influential factors of polymer composites containing orthogonal ferromagnetic microwire arrays

The microwave properties of glass-fibers reinforced polymer composite embedded with an orthogonal array of Fe77Si10B10C3 microwires have been investigated. The composites containing orthogonal wire arrays display a remarkable transmission window in the frequency band of 1 to 6 GHz under zero external magnetic field indicating an intrinsic double-negative-index characteristic. The polymer matrices have proved to exert a synergistic effect on the microwave properties, which is responsible for the disappearance of the transmission windows when Ek is perpendicular to the glass fiber direction. The plasma frequency of the orthogonal microwire array composite is higher than that of the parallel microwire array with identical wire spacing; this could be attributed to the enhanced microwire-wave interaction induced by the axial electrical components on the additional layer of perpendicular wires. All these features make this new kind of orthogonal microwire composites promising for potential cloaking and sensing applications.

Measurement of the total cross section of uranium-uranium collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=192.8$ GeV

Heavy ion cross sections totaling several hundred barns have been calculated previously for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). These total cross sections are more than an order of magnitude larger than the geometric ion-ion cross sections primarily due to Bound-Free Pair Production (BFPP) and Electro-Magnetic Dissociation (EMD). Apart from a general interest in verifying the calculations experimentally, an accurate prediction of the losses created in the heavy ion collisions is of practical interest for the LHC, where some collision products are lost in cryogenically cooled magnets and have the potential to quench these magnets. In the 2012 RHIC run uranium ions collided with each other at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 192.8$ GeV with nearly all beam losses due to collisions. This allows for the measurement of the total cross section, which agrees with the calculated cross section within the experimental error.

The electronic structure of poly(pyridine-2,5-diyl) investigated by soft x-ray absorption and emission spectroscopies

The electronic structure of the poly-pyridine conjugated polymer has been investigated by resonant and nonresonant inelastic X-ray scattering and X-ray absorption spectroscopies using synchrotron radiation. The measurements were made for both the carbon and nitrogen contents of the polymer. The analysis of the spectra has been carried out in comparison with molecular orbital calculations taking the repeat-unit cell as a model molecule of the polymer chain. The simulations indicate no significant differences in the absorption and in the non-resonant X-ray scattering spectra for the different isomeric geometries, while some isomeric dependence of the resonant spectra is predicted. The resonant emission spectra show depletion of the π electron bands in line with symmetry selection and momentum conservation rules. The effect is most vizual for the carbon spectra; the nitrogen spectra are dominated by lone pair n orbital emission of σ symmetry and are less frequency dependent.

Resonant inelastic soft-x-ray scattering spectra at the N1s and C1s edges of poly(pyridine-2,5-diyl)

Resonant inelastic scattering measurements of poly(pyridine-2,5-diyl) have been performed at the N1s and C1s edges using synchrotron radiation. For comparison, molecular orbital calculations of the spectra have been carried out with the repeat unit as a model molecule of the polymer chain. The resonant emission spectra show depletion of the p electron bands which is consistent with symmetry selection and momentum conservation rules. The depletion is most obvious in the resonant inelastic scattering spectra of carbon while the nitrogen spectra are dominated by lone pair n orbital emission of s symmetry and are less excitation energy dependent. By comparing the measurements to calculations an isomeric dependence of the resonant spectra is found giving preference to two of the four possible isomers in the polymer.

Gluons and the quark sea at high energies: distributions, polarization, tomography

This report is based on a ten-week program on "Gluons and the quark sea at high-energies", which took place at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Seattle in Fall 2010. The principal aim of the program was to develop and sharpen the science case for an Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a facility that will be able to collide electrons and positrons with polarized protons and with light to heavy nuclei at high energies, offering unprecedented possibilities for in-depth studies of quantum chromodynamics. This report is organized around four major themes: i) the spin and flavor structure of the proton, ii) three-dimensional structure of nucleons and nuclei in momentum and configuration space, iii) QCD matter in nuclei, and iv) Electroweak physics and the search for physics beyond the Standard Model. Beginning with an executive summary, the report contains tables of key measurements, chapter overviews for each of the major scientific themes, and detailed individual contributions on various aspects of the scientific opportunities presented by an EIC.

Negative refraction in natural ferromagnetic metals

It is generally believed that Veselago's criterion for negative refraction cannot be fulfilled in natural materials. However, considering imaginary parts of the permittivity (ε) and permeability (μ) and for metals at not too high frequencies the general condition for negative refraction becomes extremely simple: Re(μ) < 0 --> Re(n) < 0. Here we demonstrate experimentally that in such natural metals as pure Co and FeCo alloy the negative values of the refractive index are achieved close to the frequency of the ferromagnetic resonance. Large values of the negative refraction can be obtained at room temperature and they can easily be tuned in moderate magnetic fields.

Spin-triplet pairing in large nuclei

The nuclear pairing condensate is expected to change character from spin-singlet to spin-triplet when the nucleus is very large and the neutron and proton numbers $Z,N$ are equal. We investigate the transition between these two phases within the framework of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations, using a zero-range interaction to generate the pairing. We confirm that extremely large nucleus would indeed favor triplet pairing condensates, with the Hamiltonian parameters taken from known systematics. The favored phase is found to depend on the specific orbitals at the Fermi energy. The smallest nuclei with a well-developed spin-triplet condensate are in the mass region A ~ 130-140.

Tuning the magnetism of ordered and disordered strongly-correlated electron nanoclusters

Recently, there has been a resurgence of intense experimental and theoretical interest on the Kondo physics of nanoscopic and mesoscopic systems due to the possibility of making experiments in extremely small samples. We have carried out exact diagonalization calculations to study the effect of energy spacing $Δ$ in the conduction band states, hybridization, number of electrons, and disorder on the ground-state and thermal properties of strongly-correlated electron nanoclusters. For the ordered systems, the calculations reveal for the first time that $Δ$ tunes the interplay between the {\it local} Kondo and {\it non local} RKKY interactions, giving rise to a "Doniach phase diagram" for the nanocluster with regions of prevailing Kondo or RKKY correlations. The interplay of $Δ$ and disorder gives rise to a $Δ$ versus concentration T=0 phase diagram very rich in structure. The parity of the total number of electrons alters the competition between the Kondo and RKKY correlations. The local Kondo temperatures, $T_K$, and RKKY interactions depend strongly on the local environment and are overall {\it enhanced} by disorder, in contrast to the hypothesis of ``Kondo disorder'' single-impurity models. This interplay may be relevant to experimental realizations of small rings or quantum dots with tunable magnetic properties.

Tunable "Doniach Phase Diagram" for strongly-correlated nanoclusters

Exact diagonalization calculations reveal that the energy spacing $Δ$ in the conduction band tunes the interplay between the {\it local} Kondo and {\it non local} RKKY interactions, giving rise to a "Doniach phase diagram" for a nanocluster with regions of prevailing Kondo or RKKY correlations. The parity of the total number of electrons alters the competition between the Kondo and RKKY correlations. This interplay may be relevant to experimental realizations of small rings or quantum dots with tunable magnetic properties. Below a critical value V$_c$ of the hybridization the susceptibility exhibits a low-T exponential activation behavior determined by the interplay of the spin gap and $Δ$.

Fabrication of Conducting Si Nanowire Arrays

The recent development of the superlattice nanowire pattern transfer (SNAP) technique allows for the fabrication of arrays of nanowires at a diameter, pitch, aspect ratio, and regularity beyond competing approaches. Here, we report the fabrication of conducting Si nanowire arrays with wire widths and pitches of 10-20 nm and 40-50 nm, respectively, and resistivity values comparable to the bulk through the selection of appropriate silicon-on-insulator substrates, careful reactive-ion etching, and spin-on glass doping. These results promise the realization of interesting nano-electronic circuits and devices, including chemical and biological sensors, nano-scale mosaics for molecular electronics, and ultra-dense field-effect transistor (FET) arrays.

Zero-temperature Phase Diagram For Strongly-Correlated Nanochains

Recently there has been a resurgence of intense experimental and theoretical interest on the Kondo physics of nanoscopic and mesoscopic systems due to the possibility of making experiments in extremely small samples. We have carried out exact diagonalization calculations to study the effect of the energy spacing $Δ$ of the conduction band on the ground-state properties of a dense Anderson model nanochain. The calculations reveal for the first time that the energy spacing tunes the interplay between the Kondo and RKKY interactions, giving rise to a zero-temperature $Δ$ versus hybridization phase diagram with regions of prevailing Kondo or RKKY correlations, separated by a {\it free spins} regime. This interplay may be relevant to experimental realizations of small rings or quantum dots with tunable magnetic properties.

Accelerator Physics Issues in the Bepcii

The Beijing Electron-Positron Collider (BEPC) has been running for both high energy physics (HEP) and synchrotron radiation (SR) researches since 1989. Good performance of BEPC accomplishes a lot of achievements in the tau-charm region over the past decade, and in many fields of SR applications as well. As an upgrading scheme from BEPC, the BEPCII project was approved by the Chinese government in the early time of this year, with a micro-beta scheme and multi-bunch collision in a doublering machine installed in the current BEPC tunnel. The design work of the BEPCII is being carried on. This paper will describe the main progresses on the design of the BEPCII in the field of accelerator physics.

Disordered Kondo Nanoclusters: Effect of Energy Spacing

Exact diagonalization results for Kondo nanoclusters alloyed with mixed valence impurities show that tuning the {\it energy spacing}, $Δ$, drives the system from the Kondo to the RKKY regime. The interplay of $Δ$ and disorder gives rise to a $Δ$ versus concentration T=0 phase diagram very rich in structure, where regions with prevailing Kondo or RKKY correlations alternate with domains of ferromagnetic order. The local Kondo temperatures, $T_K$, and RKKY interactions depend strongly on the local environment and are overall {\it enhanced} by disorder, in contrast to the hypothesis of ``Kondo disorder'' single-impurity models.

Ferroelectric Nanotubes

We report the independent invention of ferroelectric nanotubes from groups in several countries. Devices have been made with three different materials: lead zirconate-titanate PbZr1-xTixO3 (PZT); barium titanate BaTiO3; and strontium bismuth tantalate SrBi2Ta2O9 (SBT). Several different deposition techniques have been used successfully, including misted CSD (chemical solution deposition) and pore wetting. Ferroelectric hysteresis and high optical nonlinearity have been demonstrated. The structures are analyzed via SEM, TEM, XRD, AFM (piezo-mode), and SHG. Applications to trenching in Si dynamic random access memories, ink-jet printers, and photonic devices are discussed. Ferroelectric filled pores as small as 20 nm in diameter have been studied.

Intrinsic Inhomogeneities in Manganite Thin Films Investigated with Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy

Thin films of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 on MgO show a metal insulator transition and colossal magnetoresistance. The shape of this transition can be explained by intrinsic spatial inhomogeneities, which give rise to a domain structure of conducting and insulating domains at the submicrometer scale. These domains then undergo a percolation transition. The tunneling conductance and tunneling gap measured by scanning tunneling spectroscopy were used to distinguish and visualize these domains.
