Clover improvement for stout-smeared 2+1 flavour SLiNC fermions: non-perturbative results

We discuss an action in which the fermion matrix has single level stout smearing for the hopping terms together with unsmeared links for the clover term. With the (tree level) Symanzik improved gluon action this constitutes the Stout Link Non-perturbative Clover or SLiNC action. To cancel O(a) terms the clover coefficient, csw, has to be tuned. We present here preliminary results of a non-perturbative determination of csw using the Schrodinger functional and as a by-product also a determination of the critical hopping parameter. A determination of the renormalisation constant for the local vector current is also given. Comparisons of the results are made with lowest order perturbation theory results.

Non-perturbative renormalization of three-quark operators

High luminosity accelerators have greatly increased the interest in semi-exclusive and exclusive reactions involving nucleons. The relevant theoretical information is contained in the nucleon wavefunction and can be parametrized by moments of the nucleon distribution amplitudes, which in turn are linked to matrix elements of local three-quark operators. These can be calculated from first principles in lattice QCD. Defining an RI-MOM renormalization scheme, we renormalize three-quark operators corresponding to low moments non-perturbatively and take special care of the operator mixing. After performing a scheme matching and a conversion of the renormalization scale we quote our final results in the MSbar scheme at mu=2 GeV.

Optical probe of carrier doping by X-ray irradiation in organic dimer Mott insulator $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}]$Cl

We investigated the infrared optical spectra of an organic dimer Mott insulator $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl, which was irradiated with X-rays. We observed that the irradiation caused a large spectral weight transfer from the mid-infrared region, where interband transitions in the dimer and Mott-Hubbard bands take place, to a Drude part in a low-energy region; this caused the Mott gap to collapse. The increase of the Drude part indicates a carrier doping into the Mott insulator due to irradiation defects. The strong redistribution of the spectral weight demonstrates that the organic Mott insulator is very close to the phase border of the bandwidth-controlled Mott transition.

The electric dipole moment of the nucleon from simulations at imaginary vacuum angle theta

We compute the electric dipole moment of proton and neutron from lattice QCD simulations with N_f=2 flavors of dynamical quarks at imaginary vacuum angle theta. The calculation proceeds via the CP odd form factor F_3. A novel feature of our calculation is that we use partially twisted boundary conditions to extract F_3 at zero momentum transfer. As a byproduct, we test the QCD vacuum at nonvanishing theta.

Flux-driven Josephson parametric amplifier

We have developed a Josephson parametric amplifier, comprising a superconducting coplanar waveguide resonator terminated by a dc SQUID (superconducting quantum interference device). An external field (the pump, $\sim 20$ GHz) modulates the flux threading the dc SQUID, and, thereby, the resonant frequency of the cavity field (the signal, $\sim 10$ GHz), which leads to parametric signal amplification. We operated the amplifier at different band centers, and observed amplification (17 dB at maximum) and deamplification depending on the relative phase between the pump and the signal. The noise temperature is estimated to be less than 0.87 K.

Condition for emergence of complex eigenvalues in the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations

The condition for the appearance of dynamical instability of the Bose-condensed system, characterized by the emergence of complex eigenvalues in the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, is studied analytically. We perturbatively expand both the Gross-Pitaevskii and Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations with respect to the coupling constant. It is concluded that the degeneracy between a positive-norm eigenmode and a negative-norm one is essential for the emergence of complex modes. Based on the conclusion, we justify the two-mode approximation applied in our previous work [E. Fukuyama \textit{et al}., Phys. Rev. A {\bf 76}, 043608 (2007)], in which we analytically studied the condition for the existence of complex modes when the condensate has a highly quantized vortex.

Spectroscopy of superconducting charge qubits coupled by a Josephson inductance

We have designed and experimentally implemented a circuit of inductively-coupled superconducting charge qubits, where a Josephson junction is used as an inductance, and the coupling between the qubits is controlled by an applied magnetic flux. Spectroscopic measurements on the circuit are in good agreement with theoretical calculations. We observed anticrossings which originate from the coupling between the qubit and the plasma mode of the Josephson junction. Moreover, the size of the anticrossing depends on the external magnetic flux, which demonstrates the controllability of the coupling.

Interqubit coupling mediated by a high-excitation-energy quantum object

We consider a system composed of two qubits and a high-excitation-energy quantum object used to mediate coupling between the qubits. We treat the entire system quantum mechanically and analyze the properties of the eigenvalues and eigenstates of the total Hamiltonian. After reproducing well-known results concerning the leading term in the mediated coupling, we obtain an expression for the residual coupling between the qubits in the off state. We also analyze the entanglement between the three objects, i.e. the two qubits and the coupler, in the eigenstates of the total Hamiltonian. Although we focus on the application of our results to the recently realized parametric-coupling scheme with two qubits, we also discuss extensions of our results to harmonic-oscillator couplers, couplers that are near resonance with the qubits and multi-qubit systems. In particular, we find that certain errors that are absent for a two-qubit system arise when dealing with multi-qubit systems.

Probing the chiral limit with clover fermions II: The baryon sector

Algorithmic progress in recent years made it possible to simulate QCD with Nf=2 flavours of O(a)-improved Wilson fermions at very light quark masses. We present the current results for baryon spectrum states, the nucleon axial coupling and the lowest moment of unpolarised nucleon structure functions. Special emphasis is given to a comparison of our calculations with results from chiral effective theories.

Distribution Amplitudes of Vector Mesons

Results are presented for the lowest moment of the distribution amplitude for the K-star vector meson. Both longitudinal and transverse moments are investigated. We use two flavours of O(a) improved Wilson fermions, together with a non-perturbative renormalisation of the matrix element.

Finite temperature Lattice QCD with two flavors of improved Wilson fermions

We present results of finite temperature QCD from N_f=2 flavors of non-perturbatively improved Wilson fermions on lattices with N_t=8, 10 and 12. The transition temperature T_c is determined for the first time at lattice spacings as low as a = 0.08 fm, albeit at pion masses 1.3 < r_0 m_π. We furthermore compute the screening masses in various color channels at T>T_c.

The chiral transition on a 24^3x10 lattice with N_f=2 clover sea quarks studied by overlap valence quarks

Overlap fermions are particularly well suited to study the finite temperature dynamics of the chiral symmetry restoration transition of QCD, which might be just an analytic crossover. Using gauge field configurations on a 24^3x10 lattice with N_f=2 flavours of dynamical Wilson-clover quarks generated by the DIK collaboration, we compute the lowest 50 eigenmodes of the overlap Dirac operator and try to locate the transition by fermionic means. We analyse the spectral density, local chirality and localisation properties of the low-lying modes and illustrate the changing topological and (anti-) selfdual structure of the underlying gauge fields across the transition.

Moments of nucleon distribution amplitudes from irreducible three-quark operators

Semi-exclusive and exclusive processes are becoming more and more important in high energy physics since they are excellently suited to study the internal hadronic structure. To analyze such processes the knowledge of the hadron distribution amplitudes, which are universal for different reactions, is essential. Only rather indirect information on these nonperturbative functions can be obtained from measurements. In this work we report on a lattice QCD computation of moments of nucleon distribution amplitudes using suitable three-quark operators. However, these operators have to be renormalized and the mixing is even more complicated than in the continuum. Using the symmetry group of the hypercubic lattice we therefore derive and implement irreducibly transforming three-quark operators, which allow us to control the mixing pattern and will finally lead to quantitative predictions in the MSbar scheme. We present preliminary results for leading-twist and next-to-leading twist nucleon distribution amplitudes based on the QCDSF/UKQCD simulations with 2 flavors of dynamical clover fermions.

Nucleon electromagnetic form factors with Wilson fermions

The nucleon electromagnetic form factors continue to be of major interest for experimentalists and phenomenologists alike. They provide important insights into the structure of nuclear matter. For a range of interesting momenta they can be calculated on the lattice. The limiting factor continues to be the value of the pion mass. We present the latest results of the QCDSF collaboration using gauge configurations with two dynamical, non-perturbatively improved Wilson fermions at pion masses as low as 350 MeV.

Kaon semileptonic decay form factors from N_f = 2 non-perturbatively O(a)-improved Wilson fermions

We present first results from the QCDSF collaboration for the kaon semileptonic decay form factors at zero momentum transfer, using two flavours of non-perturbatively O(a)-improved Wilson quarks. A lattice determination of these form factors is of particular interest to improve the accuracy on the CKM matrix element |V_us|. Calculations are performed on lattices with lattice spacing of about 0.08 fm with different values of light and strange quark masses, which allows us to extrapolate to chiral limit. Employing double ratio techniques, we are able to get small statistical errors.

Moments of generalized parton distributions and quark angular momentum of the nucleon

The internal structure of hadrons is important for a variety of topics, including the hadron form factors, proton spin and spin asymmetry in polarized proton scattering. For a systematic study generalized parton distributions (GPDs) encode important information on hadron structure in the entire impact parameter space. We report on a computation of nucleon GPDs based on simulations with two dynamical non-perturbatively improved Wilson quarks with pion masses down to 350MeV. We present results for the total angular momentum of quarks with chiral extrapolation based on covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory.

Single artificial-atom lasing

Solid-state superconducting circuits are versatile systems in which quantum states can be engineered and controlled. Recent progress in this area has opened up exciting possibilities for exploring fundamental physics as well as applications in quantum information technology; in a series of experiments it was shown that such circuits can be exploited to generate quantum optical phenomena, by designing superconducting elements as artificial atoms that are coupled coherently to the photon field of a resonator. Here we demonstrate a lasing effect with a single artificial atom - a Josephson-junction charge qubit - embedded in a superconducting resonator. We make use of one of the properties of solid-state artificial atoms, namely that they are strongly and controllably coupled to the resonator modes. The device is essentially different from existing lasers and masers; one and the same artificial atom excited by current injection produces many photons.
