Is relaxation correlated in superconducting qubits?

We consider coupled quantum two-state systems (qubits) exposed to a global relaxation process. The global relaxation refers to the assumption that qubits are coupled to the same quantum bath with approximately equal strengths, appropriate for long-wavelength environmental fluctuations. We show that interactions do not spoil the picture of Dicke's subradiant and superradiant states where quantum interference effects lead to striking deviations from the independent relaxation picture. Remarkably, the system possess a stable entangled state and a state decaying faster than single qubit excitations. We propose a scheme how these effects can be experimentally accessed in superconducting flux qubits and, possibly, used in constructing long-lived entangled states.

Decoherence in a superconducting flux qubit with a pi-junction

We consider the use of a pi-junction for flux qubits to realize degenerate quantum levels without external magnetic field. On the basis of the Caldeira-Leggett model, we derive an effective spin-Boson model, and study decoherece of this type of qubits. We estimate the dephasing time by using parameters from recent experiments of SIFS junctions, and show that high critical current and large subgap resistance are required for the pi-junction to realize a long coherent time.

The pion form factor from lattice QCD with two dynamical flavours

We compute the electromagnetic form factor of the pion using non-perturbatively O(a) improved Wilson fermions. The calculations are done for a wide range of pion masses and lattice spacings. We check for finite size effects by repeating some of the measurements on smaller lattices. The large number of lattice parameters we use allows us to extrapolate to the physical point. For the square of the charge radius we find =0.441(20) fm^2, in good agreement with experiment.

Information entropic superconducting microcooler

We consider a design for a cyclic microrefrigerator using a superconducting flux qubit. Adiabatic modulation of the flux combined with thermalization can be used to transfer energy from a lower temperature normal metal thin film resistor to another one at higher temperature. The frequency selectivity of photonic heat conduction is achieved by including the hot resistor as part of a high frequency LC resonator and the cold one as part of a low-frequency oscillator while keeping both circuits in the underdamped regime. We discuss the performance of the device in an experimentally realistic setting. This device illustrates the complementarity of information and thermodynamic entropy as the erasure of the quantum bit directly relates to the cooling of the resistor.

Transverse spin structure of the nucleon from lattice QCD simulations

We present the first calculation in lattice QCD of the lowest two moments of transverse spin densities of quarks in the nucleon. They encode correlations between quark spin and orbital angular momentum. Our dynamical simulations are based on two flavors of clover-improved Wilson fermions and Wilson gluons. We find significant contributions from certain quark helicity flip generalized parton distributions, leading to strongly distorted densities of transversely polarized quarks in the nucleon. In particular, based on our results and recent arguments by Burkardt [Phys. Rev. D 72 (2005) 094020], we predict that the Boer-Mulders-function $h_1^\perp$, describing correlations of transverse quark spin and intrinsic transverse momentum of quarks, is large and negative for both up and down quarks.

Nucleon Form Factors: Probing the Chiral Limit

The electromagnetic form factors provide important hints for the internal structure of the nucleon and continue to be of major interest for experimentalists. For an intermediate range of momentum transfers the form factors can be calculated on the lattice. However, reliability of the results is limited by systematic errors due to the required extrapolation to physical quark masses. Chiral effective field theories predict a rather strong quark mass dependence in a range which was yet unaccessible for lattice simulations. We give an update on recent results from the QCDSF collaboration using gauge configurations with Nf=2, non-perturbatively O(a)-improved Wilson fermions at very small quark masses down to 340 MeV pion mass, where we start to probe the relevant quark mass region.

Kaon $B$-parameters for Generic $ΔS=2$ Four-Quark Operators in Quenched Domain Wall QCD

We present a study of $B$-parameters for generic $ΔS=2$ four-quark operators in domain wall QCD. Our calculation covers all the $B$-parameters required to study the neutral kaon mixing in the standard model (SM) and beyond it. We evaluate one-loop renormalization factors of the operators employing the plaquette and Iwasaki gauge actions. Numerical simulations are carried out in quenched QCD with both gauge actions on $16^3\times 32\times 16$ and $24^3\times 32\times 16$ at the lattice spacing $1/a\approx 2$GeV. We investigate the relative magnitudes of the non-SM $B$-parameters to the SM one, which are compared with the previous results obtained with the overlap and the clover quark actions.

Simulating at Realistic Quark Masses: Light quark masses

We present new results for light quark masses. The calculations are performed using two flavours of $O(a)$ improved Wilson fermions. We have reached lattice spacings as small as $a \sim 0.07$fm and pion masses down to $m_π \sim 340$MeV in our simulations. This gives us significantly better control on the chiral and continuum extrapolations.

Simulating at Realistic Quark Masses: Pseudoscalar Decay Constants and Chiral Logarithms

Due to improvements in computer performance and algorithms, the rapidly increasing cost for unquenched Wilson-type fermions with lighter quarks has been ameliorated and new simulations are now possible. Here we present results using two flavours of O(a)-improved Wilson fermions for meson decay constants at pseudoscalar masses down to 320MeV. Results are at several lattice spacings down to about 0.07fm and include a non-perturbative determination of the renormalisation constant. This enables us to attempt contact with (partially quenched) chiral perturbation theory.

Decoherence of flux qubits due to 1/f flux noise

We have investigated decoherence in Josephson-junction flux qubits. Based on the measurements of decoherence at various bias conditions, we discriminate contributions of different noise sources. In particular, we present a Gaussian decay function of the echo signal as evidence of dephasing due to $1/f$ flux noise whose spectral density is evaluated to be about $(10^{-6} Φ_0)^2$/Hz at 1 Hz. We also demonstrate that at an optimal bias condition where the noise sources are well decoupled the coherence observed in the echo measurement is mainly limited by energy relaxation of the qubit.

Spectroscopy of three strongly coupled flux qubits

We have carried out spectroscopic measurements of a system of three strongly coupled four-junction flux qubits. The samples studied cover a wide range of parameters with the coupling energy between neighboring qubits varying between 0.75 GHz and 6.05 GHz. The observed complicated spectra agree well with eight-level theory. The experiments are relevant for the realization of a tunable coupling between qubits.

Probing Nucleon Structure on the Lattice

The QCDSF/UKQCD collaboration has an ongoing program to calculate nucleon matrix elements with two flavours of dynamical O(a) improved Wilson fermions. Here we present recent results on the electromagnetic form factors, the quark momentum fraction and the first three moments of the nucleon's spin-averaged and spin-dependent generalised parton distributions, including preliminary results with pion masses as low as 320 MeV.

Parity effect in superconducting aluminum single electron transistors with spatial gap profile controlled by film thickness

We propose a novel method for suppression of quasiparticle poisoning in Al Coulomb blockade devices. The method is based on creation of a proper energy gap profile along the device. In contrast to the previously used techniques, the energy gap is controlled by the film thickness. Our transport measurements confirm that the quasiparticle poisoning is suppressed and clear 2$e$ periodicity is observed only when the island is made much thinner than the leads. This result is consistent with the existing model and provides a simple method to suppress quasiparticle poisoning.

Temperature square dependence of the low frequency 1/f charge noise in the Josephson junction qubits

To verify the hypothesis about the common origin of the low frequency 1/f noise and the quantum f noise recently measured in the Josephson charge qubits, we study temperature dependence of the 1/f noise and decay of coherent oscillations. T^2 dependence of the 1/f noise is experimentally demonstrated, which supports the hypothesis. We also show that dephasing in the Josephson charge qubits off the electrostatic energy degeneracy point is consistently explained by the same low frequency 1/f noise that is observed in the transport measurements.

Critical temperature in QCD with two flavors of dynamical quarks

We present results obtained in QCD with two flavors of non-perturbatively improved Wilson fermions at finite temperature on $16^3 \times 8$ and $24^3 \times 10$ lattices. We determine the transition temperature in the range of quark masses $0.6<m_π/m_ρ<0.8$ at lattice spacing a$\approx$0.1 fm and extrapolate the transition temperature to the continuum and to the chiral limits. We also discuss the order of phase transition.

Fast two-bit operations in inductively coupled flux qubits

A central problem for implementing efficient quantum computing is how to realize fast operations (both one- and two-bit ones). However, this is difficult to achieve for a collection of qubits, especially for those separated far away, because the interbit coupling is usually much weaker than the intrabit coupling. Here we present an experimentally feasible method to effectively couple two flux qubits via a common inductance and treat both single and coupled flux qubits with more realistic models which include the loop inductance. The main advantage of our proposal is that a strong interbit coupling can be achieved using a small inductance, so that two-bit operations as fast as one-bit ones can be easily realized. We also show the flux dependence of the transitions between states for the coupled flux qubits.

Quantum noise in the Josephson charge qubit

We study decoherence of the Josephson charge qubit by measuring energy relaxation and dephasing with help of the single-shot readout. We found that the dominant energy relaxation process is a spontaneous emission induced by quantum noise coupled to the charge degree of freedom. Spectral density of the noise at high frequencies is roughly proportional to the qubit excitation energy.
