First measurement of high-energy reactor antineutrinos at Daya Bay

This Letter reports the first measurement of high-energy reactor antineutrinos at Daya Bay, with nearly 9000 inverse beta decay candidates in the prompt energy region of 8-12~MeV observed over 1958 days of data collection. A multivariate analysis is used to separate 2500 signal events from background statistically. The hypothesis of no reactor antineutrinos with neutrino energy above 10~MeV is rejected with a significance of 6.2 standard deviations. A 29\% antineutrino flux deficit in the prompt energy region of 8-11~MeV is observed compared to a recent model prediction. We provide the unfolded antineutrino spectrum above 7 MeV as a data-based reference for other experiments. This result provides the first direct observation of the production of antineutrinos from several high-$Q_β$ isotopes in commercial reactors.

Antineutrino Energy Spectrum Unfolding Based on the Daya Bay Measurement and Its Applications

The prediction of reactor antineutrino spectra will play a crucial role as reactor experiments enter the precision era. The positron energy spectrum of 3.5 million antineutrino inverse beta decay reactions observed by the Daya Bay experiment, in combination with the fission rates of fissile isotopes in the reactor, is used to extract the positron energy spectra resulting from the fission of specific isotopes. This information can be used to produce a precise, data-based prediction of the antineutrino energy spectrum in other reactor antineutrino experiments with different fission fractions than Daya Bay. The positron energy spectra are unfolded to obtain the antineutrino energy spectra by removing the contribution from detector response with the Wiener-SVD unfolding method. Consistent results are obtained with other unfolding methods. A technique to construct a data-based prediction of the reactor antineutrino energy spectrum is proposed and investigated. Given the reactor fission fractions, the technique can predict the energy spectrum to a 2% precision. In addition, we illustrate how to perform a rigorous comparison between the unfolded antineutrino spectrum and a theoretical model prediction that avoids the input model bias of the unfolding method.

Search For Electron-Antineutrinos Associated With Gravitational-Wave Events GW150914, GW151012, GW151226, GW170104, GW170608, GW170814, and GW170817 at Daya Bay

Providing a possible connection between neutrino emission and gravitational-wave (GW) bursts is important to our understanding of the physical processes that occur when black holes or neutron stars merge. In the Daya Bay experiment, using data collected from December 2011 to August 2017, a search has been performed for electron-antineutrino signals coinciding with detected GW events, including GW150914, GW151012, GW151226, GW170104, GW170608, GW170814, and GW170817. We used three time windows of $\mathrm{\pm 10~s}$, $\mathrm{\pm 500~s}$, and $\mathrm{\pm 1000~s}$ relative to the occurrence of the GW events, and a neutrino energy range of 1.8 to 100 MeV to search for correlated neutrino candidates. The detected electron-antineutrino candidates are consistent with the expected background rates for all the three time windows. Assuming monochromatic spectra, we found upper limits (90% confidence level) on electron-antineutrino fluence of $(1.13~-~2.44) \times 10^{11}~\rm{cm^{-2}}$ at 5 MeV to $8.0 \times 10^{7}~\rm{cm^{-2}}$ at 100 MeV for the three time windows. Under the assumption of a Fermi-Dirac spectrum, the upper limits were found to be $(5.4~-~7.0)\times 10^{9}~\rm{cm^{-2}}$ for the three time windows.

Did the 2000 November 8 solar flare accelerate protons to >=40 GeV?

It has been reported that a 5.7sigma directional muon excess coincident with the 2000 July 14 solar flare was registered by the L3 precision muon spectrometer [Ruiguang Wang, Astroparticle Phys., 31(2009) 149]. Using a same analysis method and similar criteria of event selection, we have analyzed the L3 precision muon spectrometer data during November 2000. The result shows that a 4.7sigma muon excess appeared at a time coincident with the solar flare of 8 of November 2000. This muon excess corresponds to above 40 GeV primary protons which came from a sky cell of solid angle 0.048 sr. The probability of being a background fluctuation is estimated to be about 0.1%. It has been convinced that solar protons could be accelerated to tens of GeV in those Class X solar flares which usually arose solar cosmic ray ground level enhancement (GLE) events. However, whether a Class M solar flare like the non-GLE event of 8 November 2000 may also accelerate solar protons to such high energies? It is interesting and noteworthy.

Thermal modulation for suppression of parametric instability in advanced gravitational wave detectors

Three-mode parametric instability is a threat to attaining design power levels in Advanced gravitational wave detectors. The first observation of three-mode parametric instability in a long optical cavity revealed that instabilities could be suppressed by time variation of the mirror radius of curvature. In this paper, we present three dimensional finite element analysis of this thermo-acousto-optics system to determine whether thermal modulation could provide sufficient instability's suppression without degrading time averaged optical performance. It is shown that deformations due to the time averaged heating profile on the mirror surface can be compensated by rear surface heating of the test mass. Results show that a $CO_2$ laser heating beam with a modulation amplitude of $1$ Watt at 0.01 Hz is sufficient to stabilize acoustic mode with parametric gain up to 3. The parametric gain suppression factor is linearly proportional to the peak modulation power.

$Υ(nS)$ and $χ_b(nP)$ production at hadron colliders in nonrelativistic QCD

$Υ(nS)$ and $χ_b(nP)$ (n=1,2,3) production at the LHC is studied at next-to-leading order in $α_s$ in nonrelativistic QCD. Feeddown contributions from higher $χ_b$ and $Υ$ states are all considered for lower $Υ$ cross sections and polarizations. The long distance matrix elements (LDMEs) are extracted from the yield data, and then used to make predictions for the $Υ(nS)$ polarizations, which are found to be consistent with the measured polarization data within errors. In particular, the $Υ(3S)$ polarization puzzle can be understood by a large feeddown contribution from $χ_b(3P)$ states. Our results may provide a good description for both cross sections and polarizations of prompt $Υ(nS)$ and $χ_b(nP)$ production at the LHC.

Yields and polarizations of prompt $\jpsi$ and $\psits$ production in hadronic collisions

We give predictions of $\jpsi$ and $\psits$ yields and polarizations in prompt production at hadron colliders based on non-relativistic QCD factorization formula. We calculate short-distance coefficients of all important color-octet intermediate channels as well as color-singlet channels up to $\mathcal{O}(α_S^4)$, i.e. next-to-leading order in $α_S$. For prompt $\jpsi$ production, we also take into account feeddown contributions from $χ_{cJ}$(J=0,1,2) and $\psits$ decays. Color-singlet long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs) are estimated by using potential model, and color-octet LDMEs are extracted by fitting the Tevatron yield data only. The predictions are satisfactory for both yields and polarizations of prompt $\jpsi$ and prompt $\psits$ production at the Tevatron and the LHC. In particular, we find our predictions for polarizations of prompt $\jpsi$ production have only a little difference from our previous predictions for polarizations of direct $\jpsi$ production.

First Results from the DarkSide-50 Dark Matter Experiment at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso

We report the first results of DarkSide-50, a direct search for dark matter operating in the underground Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) and searching for the rare nuclear recoils possibly induced by weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). The dark matter detector is a Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber with a (46.4+-0.7) kg active mass, operated inside a 30 t organic liquid scintillator neutron veto, which is in turn installed at the center of a 1 kt water Cherenkov veto for the residual flux of cosmic rays. We report here the null results of a dark matter search for a (1422+-67) kg d exposure with an atmospheric argon fill. This is the most sensitive dark matter search performed with an argon target, corresponding to a 90% CL upper limit on the WIMP-nucleon spin-independent cross section of 6.1x10^-44 cm^2 for a WIMP mass of 100 GeV/c^2.

The Electronics and Data Acquisition System of the DarkSide Dark Matter Search

It is generally inferred from astronomical measurements that Dark Matter (DM) comprises approximately 27\% of the energy-density of the universe. If DM is a subatomic particle, a possible candidate is a Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP), and the DarkSide-50 (DS) experiment is a direct search for evidence of WIMP-nuclear collisions. DS is located underground at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Italy, and consists of three active, embedded components; an outer water veto (CTF), a liquid scintillator veto (LSV), and a liquid argon (LAr) time projection chamber (TPC). This paper describes the data acquisition and electronic systems of the DS detectors, designed to detect the residual ionization from such collisions.

Structural, magnetic and transport properties in the Cu-doped manganites La0.85Te0.15Mn1-xCuxO3 (0 \leq x \leq 0.20)

The effect of Cu-doping at Mn-site on structural, magnetic and transport properties in electron-doped manganites La0.85Te0.15Mn1-xCuxO3 has been investigated. Based on the analysis of structural parameter variations, the valence state of the Cu ion in Cu-doped manganites is suggested to be +2. All samples undergo the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic (PM-FM) phase transition. The Curie temperature decreases and the transition becomes broader with increasing Cu-doping level, in contrast, the magnetization magnitude of Cu-doping samples at low temperatures increase as x \leq 0.15. The insulator-metal (I-M) transition moves to lower temperatures with increasing Cu-doping content and disappears as x > 0.1. In addition, the higher temperature resistivity r peak in double-peak-like r(T) curves observed in no Cu-doping sample is completely suppressed as Cu-doping level x = 0.1 and r(T) curve only shows single I-M transition at the low temperature well below . The results are discussed according to the change of magnetic exchange interaction caused by Cu-doping.

Determination of oxygen stoichiometry in the mixed-valent manganites

The possible redox (oxidation reduction) chemical methods for precisely determining the oxygen content in the perovskite manganites including hole-doped La1-xCaxMnOy and electron-doped La1-xTexMnOy compounds are described. For manganites annealed at different temperatures, the oxygen content of the samples was determined by a redox back titration in which the powder samples taken in a quartz crucible were dissolved in (1+1) sulfuric acid containing an excess of sodium oxalate, and the excess sodium oxalate was titrated with permanganate standard solution. The results indicate that the method is effective and highly reproducible. Moreover, the variation of oxygen content is also reflected in significantly affecting the electrical transport property of the samples, which is mainly considered to be closely related to introduce oxygen vacancies in the Mn-O-Mn network.

The effect of grain size on electrical transport and magnetic properties of La0.9Te0.1MnO3

The effect of grain size on structural, magnetic and transport properties in electron-doped manganites La0.9Te0.1MnO3 has been investigated. All samples show a rhombohedral structure with the space group at room temperature. It shows that the Mn-O-Mn bond angle decreases and the Mn-O bond length increases with the increase of grain size. All samples undergo paramagnetic (PM)-ferromagnetic (FM) phase transition and an interesting phenomenon that both magnetization and the Curie temperature decrease with increasing grain size is observed, which is suggested to mainly originate from the increase of the Mn-O bond length . Additionally, obviously increases with decreasing grain size due to the increase of both the height and width of tunneling barriers with decreasing the grain size. The results indicate that both the intrinsic colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) and the extrinsic the extrinsic interfacial magnetoresistance (IMR) can be effectively tuned in La0.9Te0.1MnO3 by changing grain size.

Insulator-metal transition and the magnetic phase diagram of La1-xTexMnO3

The structural, electrical transport and magnetic properties of perovskite oxides La1-xTexMnO3 have been investigated and thus the magnetic phase diagram of La1-xTexMnO3 compounds as a function of temperature and the doping level x has been obtained. All samples have rhombohedral structure and undergo paramagnetic-ferromagnetic (PM-FM) transition accompanied with metal-insulator transition (MIT). Whereas a charge ordering (CO) transition begins to appear at for the sample with x=0.60. Moreover, the variation of the Curie temperature and the MIT temperature is quite complex and the results are discussed in terms of three factors including the average A-site cation radius , the size mismatch and the Te content. In addition, there has an evident magnetoresistance (MR) at low temperatures for all samples.

The effect of oxygen stoichiometry on electrical transport and magnetic properties of La0.9Te0.1MnOy

The effect of the variation of oxygen content on structural, magnetic and transport properties in the electron-doped manganites La0.9Te0.1MnOy has been investigated. All samples show a rhombohedral structure with the space group . The Curie temperature decreases and the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic (PM-FM) transition becomes broader with the reduction of oxygen content. The resistivity of the annealed samples increases slightly with a small reduction of oxygen content. Further reduction in the oxygen content, the resistivity maximum increases by six orders of magnitude compared with that of the as-prepared sample, and the r(T) curves of samples with y = 2.86 and y = 2.83 display the semiconducting behavior () in both high-temperature PM phase and low-temperature FM phase, which is considered to be related to the appearance of superexchange ferromagnetism (SFM) and the localization of carriers. The results are discussed in terms of the combined effects of the increase in the Mn2+/(Mn2++Mn3+) ratio, the partial destruction of double exchange (DE) interaction, and the localization of carriers due to the introduction of oxygen vacancies in the Mn-O-Mn network.

Structural, magnetic and transport properties in the Pr-doped manganites La0.9-xPrxTe0.1MnO3

The effect of Pr-doping on structural, magnetic and transport properties in electron-doped manganites La0.9-xPrxTe0.1MnO3 with fixed carrier concentration are investigated. The room temperature structural transition from rhombohedral (R3C) to orthorhombic (Pbnm) symmetry is found in the samples with by the Rietveld refinement of x-ray powder diffraction patterns. The Curie temperature of samples decreases and the transition becomes broader with increasing Pr-doping level. For the samples with, there exist insulator-metal (I-M) transition. And the low-temperature I-M transition is observed at about 66K for the sample with x = 0.36, which may be related to the opening of a new percolation channel. For the samples with, r(T) curves display the semiconducting behavior (dρ/dT < 0) in both high-temperature PM phase and low-temperature FM phase. The results are discussed in terms of the increased bending of the Mn-O-Mn bond with decreasing the average ionic radius of the A-site element and the tolerance factor, resulting in the narrowing of the bandwidth, the decrease of the mobility of electrons and the weakening of DE interaction caused by the substitution of smaller Pr3+ ions for larger La3+ ion.
