Self-averaging of replica overlaps in the random field Edwards-Anderson model

The self-averaging of the replica overlap is proven in the Edwards-Anderson (EA) model under random field almost everywhere in the coupling constant space in any dimension. The EA order parameter is represented in terms of the derivative of the free energy density with respect to the random field strength, regardless of boundary conditions. Tasaki's correlation inequality for finite-dimensional spin glass models shows that the expectation of the squared replica overlap is bounded by the squared EA order parameter. These simple evaluations enable us to prove that the variance of the replica overlap vanishes in the infinite-volume limit. The self-averaging of the replica bond overlap is proven also in the EA model with Gaussian exchange interaction without random field. Short-range spin glass models have been shown to behave differently from mean-field spin glass models with RSB phase.

Interpolations for a quantum Parisi formula in transverse field mean-field spin glass models

A quantum Parisi formula for the transverse field Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model is proven with an elementary mathematical method. First, a self-overlap corrected quantum model of the transverse field SK model is represented in terms of the Hamiltonian with annealed random interactions. The interpolation given by Guerra and Toninelli is extended to the self-overlap corrected quantum model. It is proven that the infinite-volume limit of the free energy density exists in the operator formalism. Next, another interpolation developed by Guerra and Talagrand is applied to obtain a finite step replica-symmetry breaking (RSB) bound on the free energy density in the transverse field SK model. The interpolation enables us to show that the deviation of the RSB solution from the exact solution vanishes in the self-overlap corrected quantum model in a functional representation of the quantum spin operators. Finally, the corrected terms are removed by the Hopf-Lax formula for a nonlinear partial differential equation to show the quantum Parisi formula for the original transverse field SK model. The formula is extended to that for the transverse field mean-field $p$-spin glass model.

Existence of de Almeida-Thouless-type instability in the transverse field Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model

The interpolation method for mean field spin glass models developed by Guerra and Talagrand is extended to a quantum mean field spin glass model. This extension enables us to obtain both replica-symmetric (RS) and one step replica-symmetry breaking (1RSB) solutions of the free energy density in the transverse field Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model. It is shown that the RS solution is exact in the paramagnetic phase. We provide a sufficient condition on coupling constants where the 1RSB solution gives better bound than the RS one. This condition reduced to physical quantities in disordered single spin systems allows a simple computer-assisted proof for the existence of the de Almeida-Thouless-type instability.

Gauge theory for quantum XYZ spin glasses

Nishimori's gauge theory is extended to the quantum XYZ $p$-spin glass model in finite dimensions. This enables us to obtain useful correlation equalities, which show also that Duhamel correlation functions at an arbitrary temperature are bounded by those in the corresponding classical model on the Nishimori line. These bounds give that the spontaneous magnetization vanishes in any low temperature even if the model enters the $\mathbb Z_2$-symmetry broken spin glass phase. This theory explains well-known fact from experiments and numerical calculations that the magnetic susceptibility does not diverge in the spin glass transition. The new gauge theory together with the known phase diagram of the Edwards-Anderson model can specify the spin glass region in the coupling constant space of the quantum Heisenberg XYZ spin glass model.

Gauge theory for mixed $p$-spin glasses

Physical quantities in the mixed $p$-spin glasses are evaluated with Nishimori's gauge theory and several variance inequalities. The $\mathbb Z_2$-symmetry breaking and the replica-symmetry breaking are studied in finite and infinite dimensions. Obtained bounds on the expectation of the square of the magnetization and spontaneous magnetization enable us to clarify properties of paramagnetic and spin glass phases. It is proven that variances of ferromagnetic and spin glass order parameters vanish on the Nishimori line in the infinite volume limit. These results imply the self-averaging of these order parameters on the Nishimori line. The self-averaging of the spin glass order parameter rigorously justifies already argued absence of replica-symmetry breaking on the Nishimori line.

Universality of replica-symmetry breaking in the transverse field Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model

The existence theorem for replica-symmetry breaking (RSB) in the transverse field Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model is extended to the model with a general random exchange interactions. The relation between the expectation value of the exchange interaction energy and the Duhamel correlation function of spin operators can be obtained by an approximate integration by parts for general random interactions. In addition to the Falk-Bruch inequality, these explicit evaluations enable us to prove that the variance of overlap between two replica spin operators does not vanish under sufficiently weak transverse field in sufficiently low temperature. The absence of the ferromagnetic long range order is also shown to distinguish RSB from the $\mathbb Z_2$-symmetry breaking.

Coherent photoproduction of the neutral pion and eta meson on the deuteron at incident energies below 1.15 GeV

Coherent photoproduction of the neutral pion and eta meson on the deuteron, $γ{d}${$\to$}$π^0η{d}$, has been experimentally studied at incident photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. The total cross section demonstrates a rapid rise below 1 GeV. The data are underestimated by the existing theoretical calculations based on quasi-free $π^0 η$ photoproduction on the nucleon followed by deuteron coalescence. At the same time, the data are rather well reproduced by the calculations taking into account the final-state interaction. We have also measured for the first time the differential cross sections: the $π^0 η$ invariant-mass distribution $dσ/dM_{πη}$, the $π^0 d$ invariant-mass distribution $dσ/dM_{πd}$, the $ηd$ invariant-mass distribution $dσ/dM_{ηd}$, and the distribution over the deuteron emission angle $dσ/dΩ_d$ in the overall center-of-mass frame. The measured cross section $dσ/dΩ_d$ does not exhibit strongly backward-peaking behavior predicted by the calculations. At all incident energies, an increase in $dσ/dM_{ηd}$ near the $ηd$ threshold is observed, which indicates a bound or virtual $ηd$ state resulting from a strong attraction between $η$ and a deuteron. The possibilities of using coherent $π^0η$ photoproduction on a nucleus to study the $η$-nuclear interaction are also discussed.

Expansion for quantum perturbations in random spin systems

Energy eigenstates in the random transverse field Edwards-Anderson (EA) model and the random bond quantum Heisenberg XYZ model in a $d$-dimensional finite cubic lattice are obtained for sufficiently weak interactions. The Datta-Kennedy-Kirkwood-Thomas convergent perturbative expansion using the contraction mapping theorem is developed for quantum spin systems with site- and bond-dependent interactions. This expansion enables us to obtain energy eigenstates in the random transverse field free spin model perturbed by sufficiently weak longitudinal exchange interactions. This expansion is useful also for the EA model perturbed by sufficiently weak transverse fields and bond-dependent XY exchange interactions. In these models, their perturbations split the two fold degenerate energy eigenvalues because of the ${\mathbb Z}_2$ symmetry in the unperturbed EA model. It is shown that the energy gap between split energy eigenvalues is exponentially small in the system size. We provide a sufficient condition on the perturbation for absence of level crossing between arbitrary energy eigenstates.

Resonance-like structure near the $ηd$ threshold in the $γ{d}${$\to$}$π^0η{d}$ reaction

To investigate the interaction between the nucleon $N$ and nucleon resonance $N(1535)1/2^-$, the $ηd$ threshold structure connected to the isoscalar $S$-wave $N$-$N(1535)1/2^-$ system has been experimentally studied in the $γ{d}${$\to$}$π^0η{d}$ reaction at incident photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. A strong enhancement is observed near the $ηd$ threshold over the three-body phase-space contribution in the $ηd$ invariant-mass distribution. An analysis incorporating the known isovector resonance $\mathcal{D}_{12}$ with a spin-parity of $2^+$ in the $π^0d$ channel reveals the existence of a narrow isoscalar resonance-like structure with $1^-$ in the $ηd$ system. Using a Flatté parametrization, the mass is found to be $2.427_{-0.006}^{+0.013}$ GeV, close to the $ηd$ threshold, and the width is $\left(0.029_{-0.029}^{+0.006}{\rm\ GeV}\right)+\left(0.00_{-0.00}^{+0.41}\right) p_ηc$, where $p_η$ denotes the $η$ momentum in the rest frame of the $ηd$ system. The observed structure would be attributed to a predicted isoscalar $1^-$ $ηNN$ bound state from $ηNN$ and $πNN$ coupled-channel calculation, or an $ηd$ virtual state owing to strong $ηd$ attraction.

Absence of replica symmetry breaking in the Edwards-Anderson model near zero temperature

It is proven that the ground state is unique in the Edwards-Anderson model for almost all continuous random exchange interactions, and any excited state with the overlap less than its maximal value has large energy in dimensions higher than two with probability one. Since the spin overlap is shown to be concentrated at its maximal value in the ground state, replica symmetry breaking does not occur in the Edwards-Anderson model near zero temperature.

The Schwartz-Soffer and more inequalities for random fields

A new series of correlation inequalities for random field spin systems is proven rigorously. First one corresponds to the well-known Schwartz-Soffer inequality. These are expected to rule out incorrect results calculated in effective theories and numerical studies. The large $N$ expansion with the replica method for random field systems as an example is checked by these inequalities. It is shown that several critical exponents of multiple-point correlation functions at critical point satisfy obtained inequalities.

$ωN$ scattering length from $ω$ photoproduction on the proton near the threshold

Photoproduction of the $ω$ meson on the proton has been experimentally studied near the threshold. The total cross sections are determined at incident energies ranging from 1.09 to 1.15 GeV. The 1/2 and 3/2 spin-averaged scattering length $a_{ωp}$ and effective range $r_{ωp}$ between the $ω$ meson and proton are estimated from the shape of the total cross section as a function of the incident photon energy: $a_{ωp} = \left(-0.97^{+0.16_{\rm stat}}_{-0.16_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.03_{\rm syst}}_{-0.00_{\rm syst}}\right)+i \left(0.07^{+0.15_{\rm stat}}_{-0.14_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.17_{\rm syst}}_{-0.09_{\rm syst}}\right)$ fm and $r_{ωp}=\left(+2.78^{+0.68_{\rm stat}}_{-0.54_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.11_{\rm syst}}_{-0.13_{\rm syst}}\right)+i\left(-0.01^{+0.46_{\rm stat}}_{-0.50_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.07_{\rm syst}}_{-0.00_{\rm syst}}\right)$ fm, resulting in a repulsive force. The real and imaginary parts for $a_{ωp}$ and $r_{ωp}$ are determined separately for the first time. A small $P$-wave contribution does not affect the obtained values.

Non-strange Dibaryon Resonances Observed in the $γd\to π^0π^0 d$ Reaction

Coherent double neutral-pion photoproduction on the deuteron, $γ{d}${$\to$}$π^0π^0{d}$, has been experimentally studied at incident photon energies ranging from 0.75 to 1.15 GeV. The total cross section as a function of the $γ{d}$ center-of-mass energy shows resonance-like behavior, which peaks at approximately 2.47 and 2.63 GeV. The measured angular distribution of deuteron emission is rather flat, which cannot be reproduced by the kinematics of quasi-free $π^0π^0$ production with deuteron coalescence. In $π^0d $ invariant-mass distributions, a clear peak is observed at $2.14{\pm}0.01$ GeV$/c^2$ with a width of $0.09{\pm}0.01$ GeV$/c^2$. The spin-parity of this state is restricted to $1^+$, $2^+$ or $3^-$ from the angular distributions of the two $π^0$s. The present work shows strong evidence for the existence of an isovector dibaryon resonance with a mass of 2.14 GeV$/c^2$. The $2^+$ assignment is consistent with the theoretically predicted ${\cal{D}}_{12}$ state, and also with the energy dependence of the $π{d}$ partial-wave amplitude $^3\!P_2$ for the $π^{\pm}d${$\to$}$π^{\pm}d$ and $π^+d${$\to$}${pp}$ reactions.

Development of co-located ${}^{129}$Xe and ${}^{131}$Xe nuclear spin masers with external feedback scheme

We report on the operation of co-located ${}^{129}$Xe and ${}^{131}$Xe nuclear spin masers with an external feedback scheme, and discuss the use of ${}^{131}$Xe as a comagnetometer in measurements of the ${}^{129}$Xe spin precession frequency. By applying a correction based on the observed change in the ${}^{131}$Xe frequency, the frequency instability due to magnetic field and cell temperature drifts are eliminated by two orders of magnitude. The frequency precision of 6.2 $μ$Hz is obtained for a 10$^4$ s averaging time, suggesting the possibility of future improvement to $\approx$ 1 nHz by improving the signal-to-noise ratio of the observation.

Cosmic-muon characterization and annual modulation measurement with Double Chooz detectors

A study on cosmic muons has been performed for the two identical near and far neutrino detectors of the Double Chooz experiment, placed at $\sim$120 and $\sim$300 m.w.e. underground respectively, including the corresponding simulations using the MUSIC simulation package. This characterization has allowed to measure the muon flux reaching both detectors to be (3.64 $\pm$ 0.04) $\times$ 10$^{-4}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ for the near detector and (7.00 $\pm$ 0.05) $\times$ 10$^{-5}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ for the far one. The seasonal modulation of the signal has also been studied observing a positive correlation with the atmospheric temperature, leading to an effective temperature coefficient of $α_{T}$ = 0.212 $\pm$ 0.024 and 0.355 $\pm$ 0.019 for the near and far detectors respectively. These measurements, in good agreement with expectations based on theoretical models, represent one of the first measurements of this coefficient in shallow depth installations.

First measurement of coherent double neutral-pion photoproduction on the deuteron at incident energies below 0.9 GeV

The total cross sections were measured for coherent double neutral-pion photoproduction on the deuteron at incident energies below 0.9 GeV for the first time. No clear resonance-like behavior is observed in the excitation function for $W_{γd}=2.38$--2.61 GeV, where the $d^*(2380)$ dibaryon resonance observed at COSY is expected to appear. The measured excitation function is consistent with the existing theoretical calculation for this reaction. The upper limit of the total cross section is found to be $0.034$~$μ$b for the dibaryon resonance at $W_{γd}=2.37$~GeV (90\% confidence level) in the $γd \to π^0π^0 d$ reaction.

An event mixing technique for Bose-Einstein correlations of two pions in photoproduction around 1 GeV

We have developed an event mixing technique to observe Bose-Einstein correlations (BEC) between two identical neutral pions produced in photo-induced reactions in the non-perturbative QCD energy region. It is found that the missing-mass consistency cut and the pion-energy cut are essential for the event mixing method to effectively extract BEC observables. A Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is used to validate these constraints and confirms the efficiency of this method. Our work paves the way for similar BEC studies at lower energies where the multiplicity of emitted bosons is limited.

Development of a novel scintillation-trigger detector for the MTV experiment using aluminum-metallized film tapes

A new type of a trigger-scintillation counter array designed for the MTV experiment at TRIUMF-ISAC has been developed, which uses aluminum-metallized film tape for wrapping to achieve the required assembling precision of $\pm$0.5 mm. The MTV experiment uses a cylindrical drift chamber (CDC) as the main electron-tracking detector. The barrel-type trigger counter is placed inside the CDC to generate a trigger signal using 1 mm thick, 300 mm long thin plastic scintillation counters. Detection efficiency and light attenuation compared with conventional wrapping materials are studied.
