Quantum Computing for Fusion Energy Science Applications

This is a review of recent research exploring and extending present-day quantum computing capabilities for fusion energy science applications. We begin with a brief tutorial on both ideal and open quantum dynamics, universal quantum computation, and quantum algorithms. Then, we explore the topic of using quantum computers to simulate both linear and nonlinear dynamics in greater detail. Because quantum computers can only efficiently perform linear operations on the quantum state, it is challenging to perform nonlinear operations that are generically required to describe the nonlinear differential equations of interest. In this work, we extend previous results on embedding nonlinear systems within linear systems by explicitly deriving the connection between the Koopman evolution operator, the Perron-Frobenius evolution operator, and the Koopman-von Neumann evolution (KvN) operator. We also explicitly derive the connection between the Koopman and Carleman approaches to embedding. Extension of the KvN framework to the complex-analytic setting relevant to Carleman embedding, and the proof that different choices of complex analytic reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces depend on the choice of Hilbert space metric are covered in the appendices. Finally, we conclude with a review of recent quantum hardware implementations of algorithms on present-day quantum hardware platforms that may one day be accelerated through Hamiltonian simulation. We discuss the simulation of toy models of wave-particle interactions through the simulation of quantum maps and of wave-wave interactions important in nonlinear plasma dynamics.

Local spectroscopic evidence for a nodeless magnetic kagome superconductor CeRu$_2$

We report muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) experiments on the microscopic properties of superconductivity and magnetism in the kagome superconductor CeRu$_{2}$ with $T_{\rm c}$~${\simeq}$~5~K. From the measurements of the temperature-dependent magnetic penetration depth $λ$, the superconducting order parameter exhibits nodeless pairing, which fits best to an anisotropic $s$-wave gap symmetry. We further show that the $T_{\rm c}$/$λ^{-2}$ ratio is comparable to that of unconventional superconductors. Furthermore, the powerful combination of zero-field (ZF)-$μ$SR and high-field $μ$SR has been used to uncover magnetic responses across three characteristic temperatures, identified as $T_1^*$~${\simeq}$~110~K, $T_2^*$~${\simeq}$~65~K, and $T_3^*$~${\simeq}$~40~K. Our experiments classify CeRu$_{2}$ as an exceedingly rare nodeless magnetic kagome superconductor.

Scintillator Tile Batch Test of CEPC AHCAL

Hadron calorimeter (HCAL) is an essential sub-detector of the baseline detector system for Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC). We plan to build an Analog Hadron CALorimeter (AHCAL) prototype based on the Particle Flow Algorithm (PFA). The AHCAL of CEPC uses steel as absorber and scintillator tiles read out by Silicon Photo-Multipliers (SiPMs) as sensitive medium. The energy linearity and resolution of the calorimeter depends on the light yield uniformity of sensitive medium. It is essential to qualify the entire detector production in order to select scintillator tiles with light yield uniform within 10\%. An automated batch test platform has been designed with 144 channels, an automated 3D servo motor. The paper summarizes the tests performed on more than 15000 scintillator tiles. The measured light yield, corrected for the set-up response non-uniformity, is around 12.9 p.e. . About 91.6\% of scintillators (14219 pieces) are qualified within 10\% of light yield window.

Tunable nodal kagome superconductivity in charge ordered RbV3Sb5

Unconventional superconductors often feature competing orders, small superfluid density, and nodal electronic pairing. While unusual superconductivity has been proposed in the kagome metals AV3Sb5, key spectroscopic evidence has remained elusive. Here we utilize pressure-tuned (up to 1.85 GPa) and ultra-low temperature (down to 18 mK) muon spin spectroscopy to uncover the unconventional nature of superconductivity in RbV3Sb5. At ambient pressure, we detect an enhancement of the width of the internal magnetic field distribution sensed by the muon ensemble, indicative of time-reversal symmetry breaking charge order. Remarkably, the superconducting state displays nodal energy gap and a reduced superfluid density, which can be attributed to the competition with the novel charge order. Upon applying pressure, the charge-order transitions are suppressed, the superfluid density increases, and the superconducting state progressively evolves from nodal to nodeless. Once charge order is eliminated, we find a superconducting pairing state that is not only fully gapped, but also spontaneously breaks time-reversal symmetry. Our results point to unprecedented tunable nodal kagome superconductivity competing with time-reversal symmetry-breaking charge order and offer unique insights into the nature of the pairing state.

X-Ray Silicon Drift Detector-CMOS Front-End System with High Energy Resolution at Room Temperature

We present a spectroscopic system constituted by a Silicon Drift Detector (SDD) coupled to a CMOS charge sensitive preamplifier, named SIRIO, specifically designed to reach ultimate low noise levels. The SDD, with an active area of 13 mm , has been manufactured by optimizing the production processes in order to reduce the anode current, successfully reaching current densities between 17 pA/cm and 25 pA/cm at 20 for drift fields ranging from 100 V/cm to 500 V/cm. The preamplifier shows minimum intrinsic noise levels of 1.27 and 1.0 electrons r.m.s. at 20 and 30 , respectively. At room temperature ( ) the 5.9 keV and the pulser lines have 136 eV and 64 eV FWHM, respectively, corresponding to an equivalent noise charge of 7.4 electrons r.m.s.; the noise threshold is at 165 eV. The energy resolution, as measured on the pulser line, ranges from 82 eV FWHM (9.4 electrons r.m.s.) at 30C down to 29 eV FWHM (3.3 electrons r.m.s.) at 30C .

Time-reversal symmetry-breaking charge order in a kagome superconductor

The kagome lattice, the most prominent structural motif in quantum physics, benefits from inherent nontrivial geometry to host diverse quantum phases, ranging from spin-liquid phases, topological matter to intertwined orders, and most rarely unconventional superconductivity. Recently, charge sensitive probes have suggested that the kagome superconductors AV_3Sb_5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) (A = K, Rb, Cs) exhibit unconventional chiral charge order, which is analogous to the long-sought-after quantum order in the Haldane model or Varma model. However, direct evidence for the time-reversal symmetry-breaking of the charge order remains elusive. Here we utilize muon spin relaxation to probe the kagome charge order and superconductivity in KV_3Sb_5. We observe a striking enhancement of the internal field width sensed by the muon ensemble, which takes place just below the charge ordering temperature and persists into the superconducting state. Remarkably, the muon spin relaxation rate below the charge ordering temperature is substantially enhanced by applying an external magnetic field. We further show the multigap nature of superconductivity in KV_3Sb_5 and that the T_c/lambda_{ab}^{-2} ratio is comparable to those of unconventional high-temperature superconductors. Our results point to time-reversal symmetry breaking charge order intertwining with unconventional superconductivity in the correlated kagome lattice.

Laser-Induced Transient Magnons in Sr3Ir2O7 Throughout the Brillouin Zone

Although ultrafast manipulation of magnetism holds great promise for new physical phenomena and applications, targeting specific states is held back by our limited understanding of how magnetic correlations evolve on ultrafast timescales. Using ultrafast resonant inelastic x-ray scattering we demonstrate that femtosecond laser pulses can excite transient magnons at large wavevectors in gapped antiferromagnets, and that they persist for several picoseconds which is opposite to what is observed in nearly gapless magnets. Our work suggests that materials with isotropic magnetic interactions are preferred to achieve rapid manipulation of magnetism.

Tri-skill variant Simplex and strongly polynomial-time algorithm for linear programming

The existence of strongly polynomial-time algorithm for linear programming is a cross-century international mathematical problem, whose breakthrough will solve a major theoretical crisis for the development of artificial intelligence. In order to make it happen, this paper proposes three solving techniques based on the cone-cutting theory: 1. The principle of Highest Selection; 2. The algorithm of column elimination, which is more convenient and effective than the Ye-column elimination theorem; 3. A step-down algorithm for a feasible point horizontally shifts to the center and then falls down to the bottom of the feasible region $D$. There will be a nice work combining three techniques, the tri-skill is variant Simplex algorithm to be expected to help readers building the strong polynomial algorithms. Besides, a variable weight optimization method is proposed in the paper, which opens a new window to bring the linear programming into uncomplicated calculation.

Raman Spectroscopy and Aging of the Low-Loss Ferrimagnet Vanadium Tetracyanoethylene

Vanadium tetracyanoethylene (V[TCNE]$_{x}$, $x\approx 2$) is an organic-based ferrimagnet with a high magnetic ordering temperature $\mathrm{T_C>600 ~K}$, low magnetic damping, and growth compatibility with a wide variety of substrates. However, similar to other organic-based materials, it is sensitive to air. Although encapsulation of V[TCNE]$_{x}$ with glass and epoxy extends the film lifetime from an hour to a few weeks, what is limiting its lifetime remains poorly understood. Here we characterize encapsulated V[TCNE]$_{x}$ films using confocal microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, ferromagnetic resonance and SQUID magnetometry. We identify the relevant features in the Raman spectra in agreement with \textit{ab initio} theory, reproducing $\mathrm{C=C,C\equiv N}$ vibrational modes. We correlate changes in the effective dynamic magnetization with changes in Raman intensity and in photoluminescence. Based on changes in Raman spectra, we hypothesize possible structural changes and aging mechanisms in V[TCNE]$_x$. These findings enable a local optical probe of V[TCNE]$_{x}$ film quality, which is invaluable in experiments where assessing film quality with local magnetic characterization is not possible.

GOODS-ALMA: Optically dark ALMA galaxies shed light on a cluster in formation at z = 3.5

In this paper we study the properties of the six optically dark galaxies detected in the 69 arcmin^2 GOODS-ALMA 1.1mm continuum survey. While none of them are listed in the deepest H-band based CANDELS catalog in the GOODS-South field down to H=28.16AB, we were able to de-blend two of them from their bright neighbor and measure an $H$-band flux for them. We note that AGS4 and AGS15 have H=25.23, 27.11AB respectively. Their extreme proximity (0.50", 0.27") to a bright optical source and their extreme faintness prevented them from being included in the H-band catalog. We present the spectroscopic scan follow-up of five of the six sources with ALMA band 4. All are detected in the 2mm continuum with signal-to-noise ratios higher than eight. One emission line is detected in AGS4 (ν_{obs} =151.44GHz with a S/N=8.58) and AGS17 (ν_{obs} =154.78GHz with a S/N=10.23), which we interpret in both cases as being due to the CO(6-5) line at z^{AGS4}_{spec}=3.556 and z^{AGS4}_{spec}=3.467, respectively. These redshifts match both the probability distribution of the photometric redshifts derived from the UV to near-infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and the far-infrared SEDs for typical dust temperatures of galaxies at these redshifts. We present evidence that nearly 70% (4/6 of galaxies) of the optically dark galaxies belong to the same overdensity of galaxies at z~3.5. overdensity The most massive one, AGS24 (M_{\star} = 10^{11.32^{+0.02}_{-0.19}} M_{\odot}), is the most massive galaxy without an active galactic nucleus (AGN) at $z$\,>\,3 in the GOODS-ALMA field. It falls in the very center of the peak of the galaxy surface density, which suggests that the surrounding overdensity is a proto-cluster in the process of virialization and that AGS24 is the candidate progenitor of the future brightest cluster galaxy (BCG).

Evidence for an extended critical fluctuation region above the polar ordering transition in LiOsO$_3$

Metallic LiOsO$_3$ undergoes a continuous ferroelectric-like structural phase transition below $T_c$ = 140 K to realize a polar metal. To understand the microscopic interactions that drive this transition, we study its critical behavior above $T_c$ via electromechanical coupling - distortions of the lattice induced by short-range dipole-dipole correlations arising from Li off-center displacements. By mapping the full angular distribution of second harmonic electric-quadrupole radiation from LiOsO$_3$ and performing a simplified hyper-polarizable bond model analysis, we uncover subtle symmetry-preserving lattice distortions over a broad temperature range extending from $T_c$ up to around 230 K, characterized by non-uniform changes in the short and long Li-O bond lengths. Such an extended region of critical fluctuations may explain anomalous features reported in specific heat and Raman scattering data, and suggests the presence of competing interactions that are not accounted for in existing theoretical treatments. More broadly, our results showcase how electromechanical effects serve as a probe of critical behavior near inversion symmetry breaking transitions in metals.

Quantum Fluctuations in the Non-Fermi Liquid System CeCo$_{2}$Ga$_{8}$ Investigated Using $μ$SR

Reduced dimensionality offers a crucial information in deciding the type of the quantum ground state in heavy fermion materials. Here we have examined stoichiometric CeCo$_{2}$Ga$_{8}$ compound, which crystallizes in a quasi-one-dimensional crystal structure with Ga-Ce-Co chains along the $c$-axis. The low-temperature behavior of magnetic susceptibility ($χ\sim-\ln T$), heat capacity ($C_p/T\sim-\ln T$), and resistivity ($ρ\sim T^{n}$) firmly confirm the non-Fermi liquid ground state of CeCo$_{2}$Ga$_{8}$. We studied the low-energy spin dynamics of CeCo$_{2}$Ga$_{8}$ compound utilizing zero field (ZF-) and longitudinal field (LF-) muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. ZF-$μ$SR measurement reveals the absence of long-range magnetic ordering down to 70 mK, and interestingly below 1 K, the electronic relaxation rate sharply rises, intimating the appearance of low energy quantum spin fluctuations in CeCo$_{2}$Ga$_{8}$.

Ultrafast Control of Excitonic Rashba Fine Structure by Phonon Coherences in a Metal Halide Perovskite CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$

We discover hidden Rashba fine structure in CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ and demonstrate its quantum control by vibrational coherence through symmetry-selective vibronic (electron-phonon) coupling. Above a critical threshold of a single-cycle terahertz pump field, a Raman phonon mode distinctly modulates the middle excitonic states with {\em persistent} coherence for more than ten times longer than the ones on two sides that predominately couple to infrared phonons. These vibronic quantum beats, together with first-principles modeling of phonon periodically modulated Rashba parameters, identify a {\em three-fold} excitonic fine structure splitting, i.e., optically-forbidden, degenerate dark states in between two bright ones. Harnessing of vibronic quantum coherence and symmetry inspires light-perovskite quantum control and sub-THz-cycle "Rashba engineering" of spin-split bands for ultimate multi-function device.

Proper Orientation Number of Triangle-free Bridgeless Outerplanar Graphs

An orientation of $G$ is a digraph obtained from $G$ by replacing each edge by exactly one of two possible arcs with the same endpoints. We call an orientation \emph{proper} if neighbouring vertices have different in-degrees. The proper orientation number of a graph $G$, denoted by $\vecχ(G)$, is the minimum maximum in-degree of a proper orientation of G. Araujo et al. (Theor. Comput. Sci. 639 (2016) 14--25) asked whether there is a constant $c$ such that $\vecχ(G)\leq c$ for every outerplanar graph $G$ and showed that $\vecχ(G)\leq 7$ for every cactus $G.$ We prove that $\vecχ(G)\leq 3$ if $G$ is a triangle-free $2$-connected outerplanar graph and $\vecχ(G)\leq 4$ if $G$ is a triangle-free bridgeless outerplanar graph.

Magnetic field amplification in a laser-irradiated thin foil by return current electrons carrying orbital angular momentum

Magnetized high energy density physics offers new opportunities for observing magnetic field-related physics for the first time in the laser-plasma context. We focus on one such phenomenon, which is the ability of a laser-irradiated magnetized plasma to amplify a seed magnetic field. We performed a series of fully kinetic 3D simulations of magnetic field amplification by a picosecond-scale relativistic laser pulse of intensity $4.2\times 10^{18}$ W/cm$^2$ incident on a thin foil. We observe axial magnetic field amplification from an initial 0.1 kT seed to 1.5 kT over a volume of several cubic microns, persisting hundreds of femtoseconds longer than the laser pulse duration. The magnetic field amplification is driven by electrons in the return current gaining favorable orbital angular momentum from the seed magnetic field. This mechanism is robust to laser polarization and delivers order-of-magnitude amplification over a range of simulation parameters.

Evidence for the weakly coupled electron mechanism in an Anderson-Blount polar metal

Over 50 years ago, Anderson and Blount proposed that ferroelectric-like structural phase transitions may occur in metals, despite the expected screening of the Coulomb interactions that often drive polar transitions. Recently, theoretical treatments have suggested that such transitions require the itinerant electrons be decoupled from the soft transverse optical phonons responsible for polar order. However, this decoupled electron mechanism (DEM) has yet to be experimentally observed. Here we utilize ultrafast spectroscopy to uncover evidence of the DEM in LiOsO$_3$, the first known band metal to undergo a thermally driven polar phase transition ($T_c$ =140 K). We demonstrate that intra-band photo-carriers relax by selectively coupling to only a subset of the phonon spectrum, leaving as much as 60 % of the lattice heat capacity decoupled. This decoupled heat capacity is shown to be consistent with a previously undetected and partially displacive TO polar mode, indicating the DEM in LiOsO$_3$.

Bang-Bang Charging of Electrical Vehicles by Smart Grid Technology

The success of the transportation electricification in this century particularly requires the penentration of the internet of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) into the smart power grid. Beside the function of serving the traditional residential power demand, next-generation power grids also aim to support the internet of PEVs at the same time. The distinct difference between the traditional power demand and PEVs' power demand is that while the statistics of the former is rich enough for treating it as inelastic/known before hand, the latter is unknown until random PEVs' arrivals. Massive penentration of PEVs certainly causes the grid unpredictable fluctuation. The present paper considers the joint PEVs charging coordination and grid power generation to minimizing both of the negative impact of PEVs' integration and the cost of power generation while meeting the grid operating constraints and all parties' demand. The bang-bang PEVs charging strategy is adopted to exploit its simple implementation. By using a recently developed model predictive control (MPC) model for this problem, the online compuation is based on a predictive mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINP). A new solution computation for this optimization problem is developed. Its capacity of achieving the globally optimal solution is shown by numerical comparison between its performance and that by an off-line optimal solution.
