Magnetic field generation in plasma waves driven by co-propagating intense twisted lasers

We present a new magnetic field generation mechanism in underdense plasmas driven by the beating of two, co-propagating, Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) orbital angular momentum (OAM) laser pulses with different frequencies and also different twist indices. The resulting twisted ponderomotive force drives up an electron plasma wave with a helical rotating structure. To second order, there is a nonlinear rotating current leading to the onset of an intense, static axial magnetic field, which persists over a long time in the plasma (ps scale) after the laser pulses have passed by. The results are confirmed in three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations and also theoretical analysis. For the case of 300 fs duration, 3.8x10^17 W/cm^2 peak laser intensity we observe magnetic field of up to 0.4 MG. This new method of magnetic field creation may find applications in charged beam collimation and controlled fusion.

The effects of amplification of fluctuation energy scale by quantum measurement choice on quantum chaotic systems: Semiclassical analysis

Measurement choices in weakly-measured open quantum systems can affect quantum trajectory chaos. We consider this scenario semi-classically and show that measurement acts as nonlinear generalized fluctuation and dissipation forces. These can alter effective dissipation in the quantum spread variables and hence change the dynamics, such that measurement choices on the coupled quantum dynamics can enhance quantum effects and make the dynamics chaotic, for example. This analysis explains the measurement-dependence of quantum chaos at a variety of parameter settings, and in particular we demonstrate quantitatively that the choice of monitoring scheme can be more relevant than system scale $β$ in determining the `quantumness' of the system.

PMU Placement Optimization for Smart Grid Obvervability and State Estimation

In this paper, phasor measurement unit (PMU) placement for power grid state estimation under different degrees of observability is studied. Observability degree is the depth of the buses' reachability by the placed PMUs and thus constitutes an important characteristic for PMU placement. However, the sole observability as addressed in many works still does not guarantee a good estimate for the grid state. Some existing works also considered the PMU placement for minimizing the mean squared error or maximizing the mutual information between the measurement output and grid state. However, they ignore the observability requirements for computational tractability and thus potentially lead to artificial results such as acceptance of the estimate for an unobserved state component as its unconditional mean. In this work, the PMU placement optimization problem is considered by minimizing the mean squared error or maximizing the mutual information between the measurement output and grid state, under grid observability constraints. The provided solution is free from the mentioned fundamental drawbacks in the existing PMU placement designs. The problems are posed as binary nonlinear optimization problems, for which this paper develops efficient algorithms for computational solutions. The performance of the proposed algorithms is analyzed in detail through numerical examples on large-scale IEEE power networks.

Mixed integer nonlinear programming for Joint Coordination of Plug-in Electrical Vehicles Charging and Smart Grid Operations

The problem of joint coordination of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) charging and grid power control is to minimize both PEVs charging cost and energy generation cost while meeting both residential and PEVs' power demands and suppressing the potential impact of PEVs integration. A bang-bang PEV charging strategy is adopted to exploit its simple online implementation, which requires computation of a mixed integer nonlinear programming problem (MINP) in binary variables of the PEV charging strategy and continuous variables of the grid voltages. A new solver for this MINP is proposed. Its efficiency is shown by numerical simulations.

Large tunable intrinsic gap in rhombohedral-stacked tetralayer graphene

In rhombohedral-stacked few-layer graphene, the very flat energy bands near the charge neutrality point are unstable to electronic interactions, giving rise to states with spontaneous broken symmetries. Using transport measurements on suspended rhombohedral-stacked tetralayer graphene, we observe an insulating ground state with a large interaction-induced gap up to 80 meV. This gapped state can be enhanced by a perpendicular magnetic field, and suppressed by an interlayer potential, carrier density, or a critical temperature of ~ 40 K.

A Catalog of Post-starburst Quasars from Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7

We present a catalog of nearby (z $\leq$ 0.5) quasars with significant features of post-starburst stellar populations in their optical spectra, so-called post-starburst quasars, or PSQs. After carefully decomposing spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 (DR7) Quasar Catalog into quasar and host-galaxy components, we derive a sample of 208 PSQs. Their host-galaxy components have strong Hδ absorption ($\rm EW \geq 6 Å$) indicating a significant contribution of an intermediate-aged stellar population formed in a burst of star formation within the past 1 Gyr, which makes them potentially useful for studying the co-evolution of supermassive black holes and their host galaxies.

Global Optimal Power Flow over Large-Scale Power Transmission Network

Optimal power flow (OPF) over power transmission networks poses challenging large-scale nonlinear optimization problems, which involve a large number of quadratic equality and indefinite quadratic inequality constraints. These computationally intractable constraints are often expressed by linear constraints plus matrix additional rank-one constraints on the outer products of the voltage vectors. The existing convex relaxation technique, which drops the difficult rank-one constraints for tractable computation, cannot yield even a feasible point. We address these computationally difficult problems by an iterative procedure, which generates a sequence of improved points that converge to a rank-one solution. Each iteration calls a semi-definite program. Intensive simulations for the OPF problems over networks with a few thousands of buses are provided to demonstrate the efficiency of our approach. The suboptimal values of the OPF problems found by our computational procedure turn out to be the global optimal value with computational tolerance less than 0.01%.

Parameterized Bilinear Matrix Inequality Techniques in ${\cal H}_{\infty}$ Fuzzy PID Control Design

Proportional-integral-derivative (PID) structured controller is the most popular class of industrial control but still could not be appropriately exploited in fuzzy systems. To gain the practicability and tractability of fuzzy systems, this paper develops a parameterized bilinear matrix inequality characterization for the ${\cal H}_{\infty}$ fuzzy PID control design, which is then relaxed into a bilinear matrix inequality optimization problem of nonconvex optimization. Several computational procedures are then developed for its solution. The merit of the developed algorithms is shown through the benchmark examples.

Model Predictive Control for Smart Grids with Multiple Electric-Vehicle Charging Stations

Next-generation power grids will likely enable concurrent service for residences and plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs). While the residence power demand profile is known and thus can be considered inelastic, the PEVs' power demand is only known after random PEVs' arrivals. PEV charging scheduling aims at minimizing the potential impact of the massive integration of PEVs into power grids to save service costs to customers while power control aims at minimizing the cost of power generation subject to operating constraints and meeting demand. The present paper develops a model predictive control (MPC)- based approach to address the joint PEV charging scheduling and power control to minimize both PEV charging cost and energy generation cost in meeting both residence and PEV power demands. Unlike in related works, no assumptions are made about the probability distribution of PEVs' arrivals, the known PEVs' future demand, or the unlimited charging capacity of PEVs. The proposed approach is shown to achieve a globally optimal solution. Numerical results for IEEE benchmark power grids serving Tesla Model S PEVs show the merit of this approach.

Energy transfer, pressure tensor and heating of kinetic plasma

Kinetic plasma turbulence cascade spans multiple scales ranging from macroscopic fluid flow to sub-electron scales. Mechanisms that dissipate large scale energy, terminate the inertial range cascade and convert kinetic energy into heat are hotly debated. Here we revisit these puzzles using fully kinetic simulation. By performing scale-dependent spatial filtering on the Vlasov equation, we extract information at prescribed scales and introduce several energy transfer functions. This approach allows highly inhomogeneous energy cascade to be quantified as it proceeds down to kinetic scales. The pressure work, $-\left( \boldsymbol{P} \cdot \nabla \right) \cdot \boldsymbol{u}$, can trigger a channel of the energy conversion between fluid flow and random motions, which is a collision-free generalization of the viscous dissipation in collisional fluid. Both the energy transfer and the pressure work are strongly correlated with velocity gradients.

AGN-Host Connection at 0.5 < z < 2.5: A rapid evolution of AGN fraction in red galaxies during the last 10 Gyr

We explore the dependence of the incidence of moderate-luminosity ($L_{X} = 10^{41.9-43.7}$ erg s$^{-1}$) AGNs and the distribution of their accretion rates on host color at 0.5 < z < 2.5, using deep X-ray data in GOODS fields. We use extinction-corrected rest-frame U-V colors to divide both AGN hosts and non-AGN galaxies into red sequence (quiescent), green valley (transition), and blue cloud (star-forming) populations. We find that both the AGN fraction at fixed stellar mass and its evolution with redshift are dependent on host colors. Most notably, red galaxies have the lowest AGN fraction (~5\%) at z~1 yet with most rapid redshift evolution, increasing by a factor of 5 (~24\%) at z~2. Green galaxies exhibit the highest AGN fraction across all redshifts, which is most pronounced at z~2 with more than half of them hosting an AGN at $M_{*} > 10^{10.6} M_{\odot}$. Together with the high AGN fraction in red galaxies at z~2, this indicates that X-ray AGNs could be important in both transforming blue galaxies into red ones and subsequently maintaining their quiescence at high redshift. Furthermore, consistent with low-redshift studies, we find that the probability of hosting an AGN in the total galaxy population can be characterized by a universal Eddington ratio ($p(λ_{Edd}) \sim λ_{Edd}^{-0.4}$) and a moderate redshift evolution. Yet consistent with their different AGN fractions, different populations appear to also have different $p(λ_{Edd})$ with red galaxies exhibiting more rapid redshift evolution than green and blue ones. Evidence for a steeper power law of $p(λ_{Edd})$ in red galaxies is also presented, though larger samples are needed to confirm. These results suggest that the AGN accretion or the growth of supermassive black holes is related to their host properties, and may also influence their hosts in a different mode dependent on the host color.

Solution of the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov equations in the Cartesian deformed harmonic-oscillator basis. (VIII) hfodd (v2.73y): a new version of the program

We describe the new version (v2.73y) of the code HFODD which solves the nuclear Skyrme Hartree-Fock or Skyrme Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov problem by using the Cartesian deformed harmonic-oscillator basis. In the new version, we have implemented the following new features: (i) full proton-neutron mixing in the particle-hole channel for Skyrme functionals, (ii) the Gogny force in both particle-hole and particle-particle channels, (iii) linear multi-constraint method at finite temperature, (iv) fission toolkit including the constraint on the number of particles in the neck between two fragments, calculation of the interaction energy between fragments, and calculation of the nuclear and Coulomb energy of each fragment, (v) the new version 200d of the code HFBTHO, together with an enhanced interface between HFBTHO and HFODD, (vi) parallel capabilities, significantly extended by adding several restart options for large-scale jobs, (vii) the Lipkin translational energy correction method with pairing, (viii) higher-order Lipkin particle-number corrections, (ix) interface to a program plotting single-particle energies or Routhians, (x) strong-force isospin-symmetry-breaking terms, and (xi) the Augmented Lagrangian Method for calculations with 3D constraints on angular momentum and isospin. Finally, an important bug related to the calculation of the entropy at finite temperature and several other little significant errors of the previous published version were corrected.

Unusual interlayer quantum transport behavior caused by the zeroth Landau level in YbMnBi2

Relativistic fermions in topological quantum materials are characterized by linear energy-momentum dispersion near band crossing points. Under magnetic field, relativistic fermions acquire Berry phase of π in cyclotron motion, leading to a zeroth Landau level (LL) at the crossing point. Such field-independent zeroth LL, which distinguishes relativistic fermions from conventional electron systems, is hardly probed in transport measurements since the Fermi energy (EF) is usually not right at the band crossing points in most topological materials. Here we report the observation of exotic quantum transport behavior resulting from the zeroth LL in a multiband topological semimetal YbMnBi2 which possesses linear band crossings both at and away from the Fermi level (FL). We show that the Dirac bands with the crossing points being above or below the FL leads to Shubnikov de-Haas oscillations in the in-plane magnetoresistance, whereas the Dirac bands with the crossing points being at the FL results in unusual angular dependences of the out-of-plane magnetoresistance and in-plane Hall resistivity due to the dependence of the zeroth LL's degeneracy on field orientation. Our results shed light on the transport mechanism of the zeroth LL's relativistic fermions in layered materials.

Study on a prototype of the large dimensional refractive lens for the future large field-of-view IACT

In gamma ray astronomy, the energy range from sub-100GeV to TeV is crucial due to where there is a gap between space experiments and ground-based ones. In addition, observations in this energy range are expected to provide more details about the high energy emission from GRBs,and thus to understand EBL. Based on the observation results and the related knowledge, scientists may be able to unveil the mysteries of galaxy formation and the evolution of early universe. One of the principal issues for next generation Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACT) is to achieve larger field of view (FoV). In this work, we report a refractive water convex lens as light collector to test the feasibility of a new generation of IACT, and some preliminary test results on the optical properties (the focal length, spot size, transmittance, etc.) of a 0.9 m diameter water lens, the photodetectors and DAQ system of a prototype are presented and discussed.

Recoil-alpha-fission and recoil-alpha-alpha-fission events observed in the reaction Ca-48 + Am-243

Products of the fusion-evaporation reaction Ca-48 + Am-243 were studied with the TASISpec set-up at the gas-filled separator TASCA at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung. Amongst the detected thirty correlated alpha-decay chains associated with the production of element Z=115, two recoil-alpha-fission and five recoil-alpha-alpha-fission events were observed. The latter are similar to four such events reported from experiments performed at the Dubna gas-filled separator. Contrary to their interpretation, we propose an alternative view, namely to assign eight of these eleven decay chains of recoil-alpha(-alpha)-fission type to start from the 3n-evaporation channel 115-288. The other three decay chains remain viable candidates for the 2n-evaporation channel 115-289.

High quality electron bunch generation with CO2-laser plasma accelerator

CO2 laser-driven electron acceleration is demonstrated with particle-in-cell simulation in low-density plasma. An intense CO2 laser pulse with long wavelength excites wakefield. The bubble behind it has a broad space to sustain a large amount of electrons before reaching its charge saturation limit. A transversely propagating inject pulse is used to induce and control the ambient electron injection. The accelerated electron bunch with total charge up to 10 nC and the average charge per energy interval of more than 0.6 nC/MeV are obtained. Plasma-based electron acceleration driven by intense CO2 laser provides a new potential way to generate high-charge electron bunch with low energy spread, which has broad applications, especially for X-ray generation by table-top FEL and bremsstrahlung.

Accelerator system for the PRISM based muon to electron conversion experiment

The next generation of lepton flavor violation experiments need high intensity and high quality muon beams. Production of such beams requires sending a short, high intensity proton pulse to the pion production target, capturing pions and collecting the resulting muons in the large acceptance transport system. The substantial increase of beam quality can be obtained by applying the RF phase rotation on the muon beam in the dedicated FFAG ring, which was proposed for the PRISM project. This allows to reduce the momentum spread of the beam and to purify from the unwanted components like pions or secondary protons. A PRISM Task Force is addressing the accelerator and detector issues that need to be solved in order to realize the PRISM experiment. The parameters of the required proton beam, the principles of the PRISM experiment and the baseline FFAG design are introduced. The spectrum of alternative designs for the PRISM FFAG ring are shown. Progress on ring main systems like injection and RF are presented. The current status of the study and its future directions are discussed.

Mid- to far infrared properties of star-forming galaxies and active galactic nuclei

We study the mid- to far-IR properties of a 24um-selected flux-limited sample (S24 > 5mJy) of 154 intermediate redshift ( ~0.15), infrared luminous galaxies, drawn from the 5MUSES survey. By combining existing mid-IR spectroscopy and new Herschel SPIRE submm photometry from the HerMES program, we derived robust total infrared luminosity (LIR) and dust mass (Md) estimates and infered the relative contribution of the AGN to the infrared energy budget of the sources. We found that the total infrared emission of galaxies with weak 6.2um PAH emission (EW<0.2um) is dominated by AGN activity, while for galaxies with EW>0.2um more than 50% of the LIR arises from star formation. We also found that for galaxies detected in the 250-500um Herschel bands an AGN has a statistically insignificant effect on the temperature of the cold dust and the far-IR colours of the host galaxy, which are primarily shaped by star formation activity. For star-forming galaxies we reveal an anti-correlation between the LIR-to-rest-frame 8um luminosity ratio, IR8 = LIR\L8, and the strength of PAH features. We found that this anti-correlation is primarily driven by variations in the PAHs emission, and not by variations in the 5-15um mid-IR continuum emission. Using the [NeIII]/[NeII] line ratio as a tracer of the hardness of the radiation field, we confirm that galaxies with harder radiation fields tend to exhibit weaker PAH features, and found that they have higher IR8 values and higher dust-mass-weighted luminosities (LIR/Md), the latter being a proxy for the dust temperature (Td). We argue that these trends originate either from variations in the environment of the star-forming regions or are caused by variations in the age of the starburst. Finally, we provide scaling relations that will allow estimating LIR, based on single-band observations with the mid-infrared instrument, on board the upcoming JWST.
