Directional Andreev-Reflection Signatures of Inter-Orbital Pairing in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$

Unconventional superconductivity in quasi--two-dimensional systems is commonly identified through the emergence of Andreev bound states (ABS) at in-plane edges, while surfaces perpendicular to out-of-plane direction remain fully gapped due to weak interlayer coherence. This directional anisotropy has long served as a key paradigm for constraining pairing symmetries. Here, we show that Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ exhibits a striking reversal of this behavior. Using edge- and surface-sensitive spectroscopy, we observe pronounced in-gap ABS at surfaces perpendicular to the out-of-plane direction, whereas in-plane edges exhibit a reduced intensity of the in-gap spectral features. We show that this anomalous anisotropy can arise from the inter-orbital character of the superconducting pairing. Both even- and odd-parity inter-orbital pairing channels naturally generate robust surface ABS while suppressing planar edge modes and can also provide a mechanism for the appearance of a horizontal line node. Supported by \textit{ab initio} and model calculations, including Sr$_2$RuO$_4$/Ag interface reconstructions, our results highlight the possible role of inter-orbital correlations in shaping the spectroscopic response and provide constraints on the structure of the superconducting order parameter in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$.

Photo- and thermally-induced huge layer decoupling in twisted bilayer WSe$_2$

Twisted bilayer systems host a wealth of emergent phenomena, such as flat-band superconductivity, ferromagnetism, and ferroelectricity, arising from moir\'e superlattices and unconventional interlayer coupling. Despite their central role, direct and quantitative access to the three-dimensional atomic arrangement in these systems has remained elusive due to their nanoscale dimensions. Here, we introduce an automated dark-field electron tomography technique that enables quantitative three-dimensional structural analysis of atomically thin materials with sub-\r{A} precision. By applying this method to twisted bilayer WSe$_2$, we precisely visualize the twist-angle-dependent structural relaxation appearing as the AB/BA stacking domains separated by 10-20 nm domain walls. In the marginally twisted region ($\theta \leq 0.1^\circ$), we uncover a significant expansion of the interlayer spacing compared to the bulk configuration, exceeding 0.1 \r{A}, along with a remarkable temperature-driven interlayer decoupling. Ultrafast measurements further reveal optically induced interlayer separation of ~0.2 \r{A} on the picosecond timescale, attributed to transient exciton formation. These findings not only establish a powerful approach for visualizing hidden out-of-plane structures in atomically thin micro-flake materials, but also uncover the intrinsic fragility and dynamical tunability of interlayer coupling in moir\'e-engineered 2-dimensional materials.

First Proton-Induced Cross Sections on a Stored Rare Ion Beam: Measurement of 118Te(p,{\gamma}) for Explosive Nucleosynthesis

We present the first nuclear cross-section measurements of (p,{\gamma}) and (p,n) reactions on 118Te at energies relevant for the {\gamma}-process nucleosynthesis. Absolute cross-section values for center-of-mass energies of 6, 7 and 10 MeV are provided, together with a theoretical extrapolation to the Gamow window. This experiment marks the first time that direct proton-induced reactions have been measured on a radioactive ion beam at the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) at GSI, Darmstadt. This paves the way for a large variety of measurements, delivering new constraints for explosive nucleosynthesis and for physics beyond nuclear stability.

Superconducting LaPtH$_{ 6 }$ with triatomic hydrogen units

To veryfy "hot supreconductivity" recently proposed in lanthanum hydride-based compounds, we explored thermodynamically stable and superconducting phases in the lanthanum (La)-platinum (Pt)-hydrogen (H) ternary system at 20 GPa using an evolutionary construction scheme of a formation-enthalpy convex hull, universal neural network potential calculations, and density functional theory calculations. Although we found no evidence of the hot superconductivity in this ternary system, we predicted a unique compound, LaPtH$_{ 6 }$, which has equilateral triangular H$_{ 3 }$ units nearly forming a two-dimensional kagome lattice between La and Pt layers and shows the superconductivity at 18.67 K. This structure is dynamically stable from ambient pressure to at least 200 GPa and the superconducting critical temperature increases from 13.51 to 40.63 K.

Development of Ultra-pure Gadolinium Sulfate for the Super-Kamiokande Gadolinium Project

This paper reports the development and detailed properties of about 13 tons of gadolinium sulfate octahydrate, $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$, which has been dissolved into Super-Kamiokande (SK) in the summer of 2020. We evaluate the impact of radioactive impurities in $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ on DSNB searches and solar neutrino observation and confirm the need to reduce radioactive and fluorescent impurities by about three orders of magnitude from commercially available high-purity $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$. In order to produce ultra-high-purity $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$, we have developed a method to remove impurities from gadolinium oxide, Gd$_2$O$_3$, consisting of acid dissolution, solvent extraction, and pH control processes, followed by a high-purity sulfation process. All of the produced ultra-high-purity $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ is assayed by ICP-MS and HPGe detectors to evaluate its quality. Because of the long measurement time of HPGe detectors, we have employed several underground laboratories for making parallel measurements including LSC in Spain, Boulby in the UK, and Kamioka in Japan. In the first half of production, the measured batch purities were found to be consistent with the specifications. However,in the latter half, the $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ contained one order of magnitude more $^{228}$Ra than the budgeted mean contamination. This was correlated with the corresponding characteristics of the raw material Gd$_2$O$_3$, in which an intrinsically large contamination was present. Based on their modest impact on SK physics, they were nevertheless introduced into the detector. To reduce $^{228}$Ra for the next stage of Gd loading to SK, a new process has been successfully establised.

Bulk evidence of anisotropic $s$-wave pairing with no sign change in the kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$

The recently discovered kagome superconductors $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A$ = K, Rb, Cs) possess a unique band structure with van Hove singularities and Dirac dispersions, in which unusual charge-density-wave (CDW) orders with time-reversal and rotational symmetry breaking have been reported. One of the most crucial unresolved issues is identifying the symmetry of the superconductivity that develops inside the CDW phase. Theory predicts a variety of unconventional superconducting symmetries, including exotic states with chiral and topological properties accompanied by a sign-changing superconducting gap. Experimentally, however, the phase information on the superconducting gap in $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ is still lacking. Here we report the electron irradiation effects in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ using introduced impurities as a phase-sensitive probe of superconductivity. Our magnetic penetration depth measurements reveal that with increasing impurities, a highly anisotropic fully-gapped state changes gradually to an isotropic full-gap state without passing through a nodal state. Furthermore, transport measurements under high pressure show that the double superconducting dome in the pressure-temperature phase diagram survives against sufficient impurities. These results are strong bulk evidence that CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ is a non-chiral, anisotropic $s$-wave superconductor with no sign change both at ambient and high pressure, which provides a clue to understanding the relationship between CDW and superconductivity in kagome superconductors.

Charge-changing cross sections for $^{42\textrm{--}51}$Ca and effect of charged-particle evaporation induced by neutron removal reaction

Charge-changing cross sections $σ_\mathrm{CC}$ for $^{42\textrm{--}51}$Ca on a carbon target at around 280~MeV/nucleon have been measured. The measured $σ_\mathrm{CC}$ values differ significantly from the previously developed calculations based on the Glauber model. However, through introduction of the charged-particle evaporation effect induced by the neutron-removal reaction in addition to the Glauber-model calculation, experimental $σ_\mathrm{CC}$ values on $^{12}$C at around 300~MeV/nucleon for nuclides from C to Fe isotopes are all reproduced with approximately 1\% accuracy. This proposed model systematically reproduces $σ_\mathrm{CC}$ data without phenomenological corrections, and can also explain experimental $σ_\mathrm{CC}$ values obtained in other energy regions.

Laser-Induced Transient Magnons in Sr3Ir2O7 Throughout the Brillouin Zone

Although ultrafast manipulation of magnetism holds great promise for new physical phenomena and applications, targeting specific states is held back by our limited understanding of how magnetic correlations evolve on ultrafast timescales. Using ultrafast resonant inelastic x-ray scattering we demonstrate that femtosecond laser pulses can excite transient magnons at large wavevectors in gapped antiferromagnets, and that they persist for several picoseconds which is opposite to what is observed in nearly gapless magnets. Our work suggests that materials with isotropic magnetic interactions are preferred to achieve rapid manipulation of magnetism.

OGLE-2018-BLG-1185b : A Low-Mass Microlensing Planet Orbiting a Low-Mass Dwarf

We report the analysis of planetary microlensing event OGLE-2018-BLG-1185, which was observed by a large number of ground-based telescopes and by the $Spitzer$ Space Telescope. The ground-based light curve indicates a low planet-host star mass ratio of $q = (6.9 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{-5}$, which is near the peak of the wide-orbit exoplanet mass-ratio distribution. We estimate the host star and planet masses with a Bayesian analysis using the measured angular Einstein radius under the assumption that stars of all masses have an equal probability to host this planet. The flux variation observed by $Spitzer$ was marginal, but still places a constraint on the microlens parallax. Imposing a conservative constraint that this flux variation should be $Δf_{\rm Spz} < 4$ instrumental flux units indicates a host mass of $M_{\rm host} = 0.37^{+0.35}_{-0.21}\ M_\odot$ and a planet mass of $m_{\rm p} = 8.4^{+7.9}_{-4.7}\ M_\oplus$. A Bayesian analysis including the full parallax constraint from $Spitzer$ suggests smaller host star and planet masses of $M_{\rm host} = 0.091^{+0.064}_{-0.018}\ M_\odot$ and $m_{\rm p} = 2.1^{+1.5}_{-0.4}\ M_\oplus$, respectively. Future high-resolution imaging observations with $HST$ or ELTs could distinguish between these two scenarios and help to reveal the planetary system properties in more detail.

Direct observation of the layer-number-dependent electronic structure in few-layer WTe2

When a crystal becomes thinner and thinner to the atomic level, peculiar phenomena discretely depending on its layer-numbers (n) start to appear. The symmetry and wave functions strongly reflect the layer-numbers and stacking order, which brings us a potential of realizing new properties and functions that are unexpected in either bulk or simple monolayer. Multilayer WTe2 is one such example exhibiting unique ferroelectricity and non-linear transport properties related to the antiphase stacking and Berry-curvature dipole. Here we investigate the electronic band dispersions of multilayer WTe2 (2-5 layers), by performing laser-based micro-focused angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy on exfoliated-flakes that are strictly sorted by n and encapsulated by graphene. We clearly observed the insulator-semimetal transition occurring between 2- and 3-layers, as well as the 30-70 meV spin-splitting of valence bands manifesting in even n as a signature of stronger structural asymmetry. Our result fully demonstrates the possibility of the large energy-scale band and spin manipulation through the finite n stacking procedure.

Identification of Spin-Triplet Superconductivity through a Helical-Chiral Phase Transition in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ Thin-Films

Despite much effort for over the two decades, the paring symmetry of a Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ superconductor has been still unclear. In this Rapid Communication, motivated by the recent rapid progress in fabrication techniques for Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ thin-films, we propose a promising strategy for identifying the spin-triplet superconductivity in the thin-film geometry by employing an antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling potential and a Zeeman potential due to an external magnetic field. We demonstrate that a spin-triplet superconducting thin-film undergoes a phase transition from a helical state to a chiral state by increasing the applied magnetic field. This phase transition is accompanied by a drastic change in the property of surface Andreev bound states. As a consequence, the helical-chiral phase transition, which is unique to the spin-triplet superconductors, can be detected through a sudden change in a tunneling conductance spectrum of a normal-metal/superconductor junction. Importantly, our proposal is constructed by combining fundamental and rigid concepts regarding physics of spin-triplet superconductivity.

Swelling of doubly magic $^{48}$Ca core in Ca isotopes beyond $N=28$

Interaction cross sections for $^{42\textrm{-}51}$Ca on a carbon target at 280 MeV/nucleon have been measured for the first time. The neutron number dependence of derived root-mean-square matter radii shows a significant increase beyond the neutron magic number $N=28$. Furthermore, this enhancement of matter radii is much larger than that of the previously measured charge radii, indicating a novel growth in neutron skin thickness. A simple examination based on the Fermi-type distribution, and the Mean-Field calculations point out that this anomalous enhancement of the nuclear size beyond $N=28$ results from an enlargement of the core by a sudden increase in the surface diffuseness of the neutron density distribution, which implies the swelling of the bare $^{48}$Ca core in Ca isotopes beyond $N=28$.

Unconventional gate voltage dependence of the charge conductance caused by spin-splitting Fermi surface by Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling

We calculate the gate voltage (Vg) dependence of charge conductance in a normal metal (NM)/two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) junction, where Rashba spin-orbit coupling and ferromagnetism exist in the 2DEG. We call this 2DEG as the ferromagnetic Rashba metal (FRM) and the chemical potential of the FRM is controlled by Vg. We clarify the physical origin of the unconventional Vg dependence of charge conductance in the NM/FRM junction found in our previous work [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 87, 034710 (2018)], in which the charge conductance increases with Vg, although the number of carries in FRM decreases. We calculate the momentum-resolved charge conductance. It is clarified that the origin of the unconventional Vg dependence is due to the non-monotonic change in the size of the inner Fermi surface in FRM as a function of $V_{g}$.

Neutron skin and signature of the $N$ = 14 shell gap found from measured proton radii of $^{17-22}$N

A thick neutron skin emerges from the first determination of root mean square radii of the proton distributions for $^{17-22}$N from charge changing cross section measurements around 900$A$ MeV at GSI. Neutron halo effects are signaled for $^{22}$N from an increase in the proton and matter radii. The radii suggest an unconventional shell gap at $N$ = 14 arising from the attractive proton-neutron tensor interaction, in good agreement with shell model calculations. $Ab$ $initio$, in-medium similarity re-normalization group, calculations with a state-of-the-art chiral nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon interaction reproduce well the data approaching the neutron drip-line isotopes but are challenged in explaining the complete isotopic trend of the radii.

Non-linear charge oscillation driven by a single-cycle light-field in an organic superconductor

Intense light-field application to solids produces enormous/ultrafast non-linear phenomena such as high-harmonic generations 1, 2 and attosecond charge dynamics 3, 4. They are distinct from conventional photonics. However, main targets have been limited to insulators and semiconductors, although theoretical approaches have been made also for correlated metals and superconductors 5. Here, in a layered organic superconductor, a non-linear charge oscillation driven by a nearly single-cycle strong electric field of >10 megavolts /cm is observed as a stimulated emission. The charge oscillation is different from a linear response and ascribed to a polar charge oscillation with a period of 6 fs. This non-linear polar charge oscillation is enhanced by critical fluctuations near a superconducting transition temperature and a critical end point of first order Mott transitions. Its observation on an ultrafast timescale of 10 fs clarifies that the Coulomb repulsion plays an essential role in superconductivity of organic superconductors.

Local impedance on a rough surface of a chiral $p$-wave superconductor

We develop a self-consistent approach for calculating the local impedance at a rough surface of a chiral $p$-wave superconductor. Using the quasiclassical Eilenberger-Larkin-Ovchinnikov formalism, we numerically find the pair potential, pairing functions, and the surface density of states taking into account diffusive electronic scattering at the surface. The obtained solutions are then employed for studying the local complex conductivity and surface impedance in the broad range of microwave frequencies (ranging from subgap to above-gap values). We identify anomalous features of the surface impedance caused by generation of odd-frequency superconductivity at the surface. The results are compared with experimental data for Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and provide a microscopic explanation of the phenomenological two-fluid model suggested earlier to explain anomalous features of the microwave response in this material.

Theory of tunneling spectroscopy of normal metal/ferromagnet/spin-triplet superconductor junctions

We study the tunneling conductance of a ballistic normal metal / ferromagnet / spin-triplet superconductor junction using the extended Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk formalism as a model for a $c$-axis oriented Au / SrRuO$_{3}$ / Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ junction. We compare chiral $p$-wave (CPW) and helical $p$-wave (HPW) pair potentials, combined with ferromagnet magnetization directions parallel and perpendicular to the interface. For fixed $θ_{M}$, where $θ_{M}$ is a direction of magnetization in the ferromagnet measured from the $c$-axis, the tunneling conductance of CPW and HPW clearly show different voltage dependencies. It is found that the cases where the $d$-vector is perpendicular to the magnetization direction (CPW with $θ_{M} = π/2$ and HPW with $θ_{M} = 0$) are identical. The obtained results serve as a guide to determine the pairing symmetry of the spin-triplet superconductor Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$.

Superconductors that do not expel magnetic flux

An ultrathin superconducting bilayer creates a coreless fractional vortex when only the second layer has a hole. The quantization is broken by the hole, and the normal core disappears. The magnetic flux is no longer confined near the normal core, and its density profile around the hole becomes similar to that of a crème caramel; the divergence of the magnetic flux density is truncated around the center. We propose basic design of a practical device to realize a coreless fractional vortex.
