Softening of Cu-O bond stretching phonon in tetragonal HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$

Phonons in nearly optimally doped HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ were studied by inelastic X-ray scattering. The dispersion of the low energy modes is well described by a shell model, while the Cu-O bond stretching mode at high energy shows strong softening towards the zone boundary, which deviates strongly from the model. This seems to be common in the hole-doped high-$T_\mathrm{c}$ superconducting cuprates, and, based on this work, not related to a lattice distortion specific to each material.

Microscopic theory of spin-triplet $f$-wave pairing in quasi-1D organic superconductors

We present a microscopic theory of fluctuation-mediated pairing mechanism in organic superconductors ${(TMTSF)}_{2}X$, where the experimentally observed coexistence of $2k_{F}$ charge fluctuation and $2k_{F}$ spin fluctuation is naturally taken into account. We have studied, within the random phase approximation, the extended Hubbard model at quarter-filling on a quasi-one-dimensional lattice, where we consider the off-site repulsive interaction up to third next nearest neighbors along with the on-site repulsion. The results show that spin-triplet $f$-wave-like pairing can be realized in this system, dominating over singlet d-wave-like pairing, if $2k_F$ spin and $2k_F$ charge fluctuations coexist.

Coexistence of Superconductivity and Antiferromagnetism in Multilayered High-$T_c$ Superconductor HgBa$_2$Ca$_4$Cu$_5$O$_y$: A Cu-NMR Study

We report a coexistence of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in five-layered compound HgBa$_2$Ca$_4$Cu$_5$O$_y$ (Hg-1245) with $T_c=108$ K, which is composed of two types of CuO$_2$ planes in a unit cell; three inner planes (IP's) and two outer planes (OP's). The Cu-NMR study has revealed that the optimallydoped OP undergoes a superconducting (SC) transition at $T_c=108$ K, whereas the three underdoped IP's do an antiferromagnetic (AF) transition below $T_N\sim$ 60 K with the Cu moments of $\sim (0.3-0.4)μ_B$. Thus bulk superconductivity with a high value of $T_c=108$ K and a static AF ordering at $T_N=60$ K are realized in the alternating AF and SC layers. The AF-spin polarization at the IP is found to induce the Cu moments of $\sim0.02μ_B$ at the SC OP, which is the AF proximity effect into the SC OP.

Split of zero-bias conductance peak in normal-metal / d-wave superconductor junctions

Effects of impurity scatterings on the conductance in normal-metal / $d$ wave superconductor junctions are discussed by using the single-site approximation. So far, the split of the zero-bias conductance peak has been believed to be an evidence of the broken time reversal symmetry states at the surface of high-$T_c$ superconductors. In this paper, however, it is shown that the impurity scattering near the interface also causes the split of the zero-bias conductance peak. Typical conductance spectra observed in experiments at finite temperatures and under external magnetic fields are explained well by the present theory.

Josephson effect in quasi one-dimensional unconventional superconductors

Josephson effect in junctions of quasi one-dimensional triangular lattice superconductors is discussed, where the theoretical model corresponds to organic superconductors (TMTSF)_2PF_6. We assume the quarter-filling electron band and p, d and f wave like pairing symmetries in organic superconductors. To realize the electronic structures in organic superconductors, we introduce the asymmetric hopping integral, (t') among second nearest lattice sites. At t'=0, the Josephson current in the d wave symmetry saturates in low temperatures, whereas those in the p and the f wave symmetries show the low-temperature anomaly due to the zero-energy state at the junction interfaces. The low-temperature anomaly appears even in the d wave symmetry in the presence of t', whereas the anomaly is suppressed in the f wave symmetry. The shape of the Fermi surface is an important factor for the formation of the ZES in the quarter-filling electron systems.

Kohn Anomaly in MgB2 by Inelastic X-Ray Scattering

We study phonons in MgB2 using inelastic x-ray scattering (1.6 and 6 meV resolution). Our measurements show excellent agreement with theory for the dispersion and line-width: we clearly observe the softening and broadening of the crucial E2g mode through the Kohn anomaly along GM. Low temperature measurements (just above and below Tc) show negligible changes for the momentum-transfers investigated, and no change in the E2g mode at A between room temperature and 16K. We report the presence of a longitudinal mode along GA near in energy to the E2g mode that is not predicted by theory.

The X-ray variability of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS 13224-3809 from an XMM-Newton observation

We report on the XMM-Newton timing properties of the most X-ray variable, radio-quiet, NLS1 IRAS 13224-3809. IRAS 13224-3809 continues to display the extremely variable behavior that was previously observed with ROSAT and ASCA; however, no giant, rapid flaring events are observed. We detect variations by a factor as high as ~8 during the 64 ks observation, and the variability is persistent throughout the light curve. Dividing the light curve into 9 minute segments we found almost all of the segments to be variable at > 3 sigma. When the time-averaged cross-correlation function is calculated for the 0.3-0.8 keV band with the 3-10 keV band, the cross-correlation profile is skewed indicating a possible smearing of the signal to longer times (soft band leading the hard). A correlation between count rate and hardness ratio is detected in four energy bands. In three cases the correlation is consistent with spectral hardening at lower count rates which can be explained in terms of a partial-covering model. The other band displays the reverse effect, showing spectral hardening at higher count rates. We can explain this trend as a more variable power-law component compared to the soft component. We also detect a delay between the 0.3-1.5 keV count rate and the 0.8-1.5 keV to 0.3-0.8 keV hardness ratio, implying flux induced spectral variability. Such delays and asymmetries in the cross correlation functions could be suggesting reprocessing of soft and hard photons. In general, much of the timing behavior can be attributed to erratic eclipsing behavior associated with the partial covering phenomenon, in addition to intrinsic variability in the source. The variability behavior of IRAS 13224-3809 suggests a complicated combination of effects which we have started to disentangle with this present analysis.

Tunneling Spectra of Skutterudite PrOs_4Sb_{12}

The tunnel conductance in normal-metal / insulator / PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ junctions is theoretically studied, where skutterudite PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ is considered to be an unconventional superconductor. The conductance are calculated for several pair potentials which have been proposed in recent works. The results show that the conductance is sensitive to the relation between the direction of electric currents and the position of point nodes. We also show that the conductance spectra often deviate from the shape of the bulk density of states and that the sub gap spectra have peak structures in the case of the spin-triplet pair potentials. The results indicate that the tunnel conductance is a useful tool to obtain an information of the pairing symmetry.

Oblate-prolate transition in odd-mass light mercury isotopes

Anomalous isotope shifts in the chain of light Hg isotopes are investigated by using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method with the Skyrme SIII, SkI3 and SLy4 forces. The sharp increase in the mean-square radius of the odd mass $^{181-185}$Hg isotopes is well explained in terms of the transition from an oblate to a prolate shape in the ground state of these isotopes. We discuss the polarization energy of time-odd mean-field terms in relation to the blocked level by the odd neutron.

Zero-bias conductance peak splitting due to multiband effect in tunneling spectroscopy

We study how the multiplicity of the Fermi surface affects the zero-bias peak in conductance spectra of tunneling spectroscopy. As case studies, we consider models for organic superconductors $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$ and (TMTSF)$_2$ClO$_4$. We find that multiplicity of the Fermi surfaces can lead to a splitting of the zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP). We propose that the presence/absence of the ZBCP splitting is used as a probe to distinguish the pairing symmetry in $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$.

Theory of charge transport in diffusive normal metal / conventional superconductor point contacts

Tunneling conductance in diffusive normal metal / insulator / s-wave superconductor (DN/I/S) junctions is calculated for various situations by changing the magnitudes of the resistance and Thouless energy in DN and the transparency of the insulating barrier. The generalized boundary condition introduced by Yu. Nazarov [Superlattices and Microstructures 25 1221 (1999)] is applied, where the ballistic theory by Blonder Tinkham and Klapwijk (BTK) and the diffusive theory by Volkov Zaitsev and Klapwijk based on the boundary condition of Kupriyanov and Lukichev (KL) are naturally reproduced. It is shown that the proximity effect can enhance (reduce) the tunneling conductance for junctions with a low (high) transparency. A wide variety of dependencies of tunneling conductance on voltage bias is demonstrated including a $U$-shaped gap like structure, a zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP) and a zero bias conductance dip (ZBCD).

XMM-Newton spectral properties of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS 13224--3809

We report on the first XMM-Newton observation of the highly X-ray variable, radio-quiet, Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS 13224-3809 obtained during the guaranteed time programme with a 64 ks exposure. The most remarkable spectral feature is a sharp drop, by a factor ~5, in the spectrum at 8 keV. This is a similar, but stronger, feature to that which we found in 1H0707-495. Significant flattening of the hard X-ray spectrum occurs when the source flux decreases. The flattening of the spectrum can be modelled as an increase in the column density of the absorbing material and/or its covering fraction. Below ~ 1.5 keV the spectrum is dominated by a giant soft X-ray excess, and at around ~ 1.2 keV there is a significant absorption feature detected, most probably due to ionized Fe L absorption. The new X-ray spectral properties detected with XMM-Newton in IRAS 13224-3809 support a partial covering interpretation, i.e. the presence of dense material inside the accretion-disc region partially obscuring the emission from the accretion disc. However, the sharpness of the feature, if due to photoelectric absorption, is surprising and may require an alternative explanation. One possibility which does fit the whole spectrum is that it is dominated by ionized reflection rather than absorption. The unusual spectral properties detected with XMM-Newton from Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies increase the known spectral complexity of active galactic nuclei and should further stimulate a combined theoretical and observational effort to achieve a better understanding of the physics of the innermost regions of AGN.

Josephson effect in d-wave superconductor junctions in a lattice model

Josephson current between two d-wave superconductors is calculated by using a lattice model. Here we consider two types of junctions, $i.e.$, the parallel junction and the mirror-type junction. The maximum Josephson current $(J_{c})$ shows a wide variety of temperature ($T$) dependence depending on the misorientation angles and the types of junctions. When the misorientation angles are not zero, the Josephson current shows the low-temperature anomaly because of a zero energy state (ZES) at the interfaces. In the case of mirror-type junctions, $J_c$ has a non monotonic temperature dependence. These results are consistent with the previous results based on the quasiclassical theory. [Y. Tanaka and S. Kashiwaya: Phys. Rev. B \textbf{56} (1997) 892.] On the other hand, we find that the ZES disappears in several junctions because of the Freidel oscillations of the wave function, which is peculiar to the lattice model. In such junctions, the temperature dependence of $J_{c}$ is close to the Ambegaokar-Baratoff relation.

Influence of impurity-scattering on tunneling conductance in d-wave superconductors with broken time reversal symmetry

Effects of impurity scattering on tunneling conductance in dirty normal-metal/insulator/superconductor junctions are studied based on the Kubo formula and the recursive Green function method. The zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) is a consequence of the unconventional pairing symmetry in superconductors. The impurity scattering in normal metals suppresses the amplitude of the ZBCP. The degree of the suppression agrees well with results of the quasiclassical Green function theory. When superconductors have $d$+is-wave pairing symmetry, the time-reversal symmetry is broken in superconductors and the ZBCP splits into two peaks. The random impurity scattering reduces the height of the two splitting peaks. The position of the splitting peaks, however, almost remains unchanged even in the presence of the strong impurity scattering. Thus the two splitting peaks never merge into a single ZBCP.

Temperature-dependence of spin-polarized transport in ferromagnet / unconventional superconductor junctions

Tunneling conductance in ferromagnet / unconventional superconductor junctions is studied theoretically as a function of temperatures and spin-polarization in feromagnets. In d-wave superconductor junctions, the existence of a zero-energy Andreev bound state drastically affects the temperature-dependence of the zero-bias conductance (ZBC). In p-wave triplet superconductor junctions, numerical results show a wide variety in temperature-dependence of the ZBC depending on the direction of the magnetic moment in ferromagnets and the pairing symmetry in superconductors such as $p_{x}$, $p_{y}$ and $p_{x}+ip_{y}$-wave pair potential. The last one is a promising symmetry of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. From these characteristic features in the conductance, we may obtain the information about the degree of spin-polarization in ferromagnets and the direction of the $d$-vector in triplet superconductors.

Simple test for high Jc and low Rs superconducting thin films

A simple method, fishing high-Tc superconductor thin films out of liquid nitrogen bath by a permanent magnet (field > Hc1) due to the effect of high flux pinning, has been suggested to identify films having high critical current density (Jc > 106 A/cm2 at 77 K) and thus a low microwave surface resistance (Rs). We have demonstrated that a Nd-Fe-B magnet, having a maximum field of ~ 0.5 T, could fish out Tl-1223 superconducting thin films on LSAT substrate with a thickness of ~ 5000 Angstrong having Jc > 1 MA/cm2 (at 77 K) whereas it could not fish out other films with Jc < 0.1 MA/cm2 at 77 K. The fished out films exhibit Rs values 237 - 245 ((at 77 K and 10 GHz, which is lower than that (Rs = 317 (() of the best YBCO film at the same temperature and frequency. On the other hand, the non-fishable films show very high Rs values. This method is a very simple tool to test for high Jc and good microwave properties of superconducting films of large area which otherwise require a special and expensive tool.

Possible anomalous Doppler shift effect in superconductor Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$

The effect of the Doppler shift is studied in a model for the $α$-$β$ bands of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ consisting of two hybridized 1D bands. Assuming a superconducting gap with nodes in the diagonal directions, we examine the oscillation of the surface density of states and the thermal conductivity under a rotating magnetic field. Upon varying the strength of the hybridization, the oscillation in these quantities is found to exhibit 2D to 1D crossover. In the crossover regime, which corresponds to the actual Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, the thermal conductivity exhibits a two-fold-symmetry oscillation, while the four-fold-symmetry component in the oscillation is barely detectable.

Josephson current in s-wave superconductor / Sr_2RuO_4 junctions

The Josephson current between an s-wave and a spin-triplet superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ (SRO) is studied theoretically. In spin-singlet / spin-triplet superconductor junctions, there is no Josephson current proportional to $\sin ϕ$ in the absence of the spin-flip scattering near junction interfaces, where $ϕ$ is a phase-difference across junctions. Thus a dominant term of the Josephson current is proportional to $\sin 2ϕ$ . The spin-orbit scattering at the interfaces gives rise to the Josephson current proportional to $\cosϕ$, which is a direct consequence of the chiral paring symmetry in SRO.
