Circuit theory of unconventional superconductor junctions

We extend the circuit theory of superconductivity to cover transport and proximity effect in mesoscopic systems that contain unconventional superconductor junctions. The approach fully accounts for zero-energy Andreev bound states forming at the surface of unconventional superconductors. As a simple application, we investigate the transport properties of a diffusive normal metal in series with a d-wave superconductor junction. We reveal the competition between the formation of Andreev bound states and proximity effect, that depends on the crystal orientation of the junction interface.

Magnetotunneling spectroscopy as a probe for pairing symmetry determination in quasi-2D anisotropic superconductors

As a probe to determine the pairing symmetry of quasi-two-dimensional anisotropic superconductors, we propose tunneling spectroscopy in the presence of magnetic field, where the magnetic field is parallel to the two dimensional planes and rotated. As a case study, we apply this idea to the models of high-$T_{C}$ cuprates and organic superconductors $κ$-(ET)$_2X$. The surface density of states at the Fermi energy exhibits a characteristic oscillation upon rotating the direction of the magnetic field due to the Doppler shift of the energy of quasiparticles. The surface density of states has a minimum when the applied magnetic field is parallel to the node direction of the pair potential independent of the detailed shape of the Fermi surface. The amplitude of the oscillation is sensitively affected by the shape of Fermi surface.

Tunneling conductance in normal metal - high $T_{C}$ cuprate junctions in the presence of magnetic field

The magnetic field responses of the zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) in tunneling spectra of high $T_{C}$ cuprate junctions are studied theoretically. Our calculation is based on the lattice Green's function method and takes the realistic electronic structure of the high $T_{C}$ cuprate into account. In marked contrast to previous works, it is shown that the critical magnetic field strength $H_{C}$ exists for the splittings of the ZBCP's to be discernible. $H_{C}$ is almost proportional to the product of the magnitude of pair potential, transmissivity of the junction, and the inverse of the Fermi velocity parallel to the interface (1/$v_{Fy}$). The calculated $H_{C}$'s for the hole-doped superconductors are higher than those for electron-doped ones because of relatively large magnitude of pair potential and the small magnitude of $v_{Fy}$ originating from peculiar shape of the Fermi surface.

Theory of magnetotunneling spectroscopy in spin triplet p-wave superconductors

We study the influence of a magnetic field $H$ on the zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) due to zero-energy Andreev bound state (ZES) in normal metal / unconventional superconductor. For p-wave junctions, ZBCP does not split into two by $H$ even for sufficiently low transparent junctions, where ZBCP clearly splits for d-wave. This unique property originates from the fact that for p-wave superconductors, perpendicularly injected quasiparticle form ZES, which contribute most dominantly on the tunneling conductance. In addition, we show that for $p_{x}$+i$p_{y}$-wave superconductor junctions, the height of ZBCP is sensitive to $H$ due to the formation of broken time reversal symmetry state. We propose that tunneling spectroscopy in the presence of magnetic field, $i.e.$, $magnetotunneling$, is an promising method to determine the pairing symmetry of unconventional superconductors.

Tomography of pairing symmetry from magnetotunneling spectroscopy -- a case study for quasi-1D organic superconductors

We propose that anisotropic $p$-, $d$-, or $f$-wave pairing symmetries can be distinguished from a tunneling spectroscopy in the presence of magnetic fields, which is exemplified here for a model organic superconductor ${(TMTSF)}_{2}X$. The shape of the Fermi surface (quasi-one-dimensional in this example) affects sensitively the pairing symmetry, which in turn affects the shape (U or V) of the gap along with the presence/absence of the zero-bias peak in the tunneling in a subtle manner. Yet, an application of a magnetic field enables us to identify the symmetry, which is interpreted as an effect of the Doppler shift in Andreev bound states.

Properties of the background of EPIC onboard XMM-Newton

Understanding a background is crucial in particular for a study of low surface brightness objects. In order to establish the background subtraction method, we have studied properties of the EPIC background. Count rates of the background vary violently by two order of magnitude at the maximum, while during the most quiet period, these are stable within 8 % at a 1 $σ$ level. The overall spectrum is dominated by particle events above 5 keV, and its spatial variation is also found. The long-term variation of the background is also investigated with CAL CLOSED data, which is the data of calibration source with filter closed. The average background count rate decreased by 20 % from March 2000 to January 2001, but it regained in February 2001. For the modeling of the background spectrum, we investigate correlations between the 2-10 keV count rate and some characteristic parameters. The PN background shows a good correlation with some parameters. On the other hands, the MOS background does not shows a clear correlation. Further investigation is needed for the MOS background. Our final goal is to establish a method to predict the background, for which these results will be reflected in the background generator.

Field-Induced Two-Step Phase Transitions in the Singlet Ground State Triangular Antiferromagnet CsFeBr$_3$

The ground state of the stacked triangular antiferromagnet CsFeBr$_3$ is a spin singlet due to the large single ion anisotropy $D(S^z)^2$. The field-induced magnetic ordering in this compound was investigated by the magnetic susceptibility, the magnetization process and specific heat measurements for an external field parallel to the $c$-axis. Unexpectedly, two phase transitions were observed in the magnetic field $H$ higher than 3 T. The phase diagram for temperature versus magnetic field was obtained. The mechanism leading to the successive phase transitions is discussed.

Observation of the second harmonic in superconducting current-phase relation of Nb/Au/(001)YBa2Cu3Ox heterojunctions

The superconducting current-phase relation (CPR) of Nb/Au/(001)YBa2Cu3Ox heterojunctions prepared on epitaxial c-axis oriented YBa2Cu3Ox thin films has been measured in a single-junction interferometer. For the first time, the second harmonic of the CPR of such junctions has been observed. The appearance of the second harmonic and the relative sign of the first and second harmonics of the CPR can be explained assuming, that the macroscopic pairing symmetry of our YBa2Cu3Ox thin films is of the d+s type

Parity-sensitive measurements based on ferromagnet/superconductor tunneling junctions

A method to identify the parity of unconventional superconductors is proposed based on tunneling spectroscopy. For a model of calculation, we adopt a ferromagnet/superconductor (F/S) junction of which tunneling current is spin polarized. The tunneling conductance spectra are shown to be quite sensitive to the direction of the magnetization axis in the ferromagnet only when the superconductor has odd parity. Therefore, it is possible to distinguish the parity of the superconductor by measuring the tunneling spectroscopy in F/S junctions.

Tunneling conductance of normal metal / $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-wave superconductor junctions in the presence of broken time reversal symmetry states near interfaces

In order to clarify the influence of (the presence of) the broken time-reversal symmetry state (BTRSS) induced near the interface, tunneling conductance spectra in normal metal / $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-wave superconductor junctions are calculated on the basis of the quasiclassical Green's function method. The spatial dependence of the pair potential in the superconductor side is determined self-consistently. We discuss two types of the symmetry on the BTRSS; i) $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$+is-wave state and ii) $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$+i$d_{xy}$-wave state. It is shown that the amplitude of the subdominant component (is-wave or i$d_{xy}$-wave) is quite sensitive to the transmission coefficient of the junction. As the results, the splitting of the zero-bias conductance peak due to the BTRSS inducement is detectable only at junctions with small transmission coefficients for both cases. When the transmission coefficients are relatively large, the explicit peak splitting does not occur and the difference in the two cases appears in the height of the zero-bias peaks.

Theoretical study of quasiparticle states near the surface of a quasi-one-dimensional organic superconductor $({TMTSF})_{2}{PF}_6$

Quasiparticle states near the surface of a quasi-one-dimensional organic superconductor $({TMTSF})_{2}{PF}_6$ are studied based on an extended Hubbard model on a quasi-one dimensional lattice at quarter-filling. Three types of pairing symmetries, (i) p-wave, (ii) d-wave, or (iii) $f$-wave are assumed. The resulting surface density of states has characteristic features for each pairing symmetry: i) a zero-energy peak (ZEP) in a U-shaped structure, ii) a V-shaped structure without ZEP, and iii) a ZEP in a V-shaped structure. From these results, we propose that the tunneling spectroscopy serves as a strong method to identify the the pairing symmetry in $({TMTSF})_{2}{PF}_6$.

Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculation of charge radii of Sn, Ba, Yb, and Pb isotopes

Charge radii of Sn, Ba, Yb, and Pb isotopes are calculated within Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with a Skyrme force and a density-dependent delta-force pairing. We investigate mean field effects of the pairing upon odd-even staggering of isotope shifts. HFB equations are solved in the canonical basis. Odd nuclei are treated in the blocking approximation.

A Complete Relativistic Ionized Accretion Disc in Cygnus X-1

The galactic black hole candidate Cygnus X-1 is observed to be in one of two X-ray spectral states; either the low/hard (low soft X-ray flux and a flat power law tail) or high/soft (high blackbody-like soft X-ray flux and a steep power law tail) state. The physical origin of these two states is unclear. We present here a model of an ionized accretion disc, the spectrum of which is blurred by relativistic effects, and fit it to the ASCA, Ginga and EXOSAT data of Cygnus X-1 in both spectral states. We confirm that relativistic blurring provides a much better fit to the low/hard state data and, contrary to some previous results, find the data of both states to be consistent with an ionized thin accretion disc with a reflected fraction of unity extending to the innermost stable circular orbit around the black hole. Our model is an alternative to those which, in the low/hard state, require the accretion disc to be truncated at a few tens of Schwarzschild radii, within which there is a Thomson-thin, hot accretion flow. We suggest a mechanism that may cause the changes in spectral state.

Influence of impurity scattering on tunneling conductance in normal metal- d -wave superconductor junctions

Tunneling conductance spectra between a normal metal / d-wave superconductor junction under the presence of bulk impurities in the superconductor are studied. The quasiclassical theory has been applied to calculate the spatial variation of the pair potential and the effect of impurity scattering has been introduced by t-matrix approximation. The magnitude of a subdominant s-wave component at the interface is shown to robust against the impurity scattering while that for a subdominant $d_{xy}$-wave component is largely suppressed with the increase of the impurity scattering rate. The zero-bias conductance peak due to the zero-energy Andreev bound states is significantly broadened for the case of Born limit impurity compared with that of unitary limit impurity.

Unusual Properties of X-Ray Emission near the Galactic Center

The X-ray spectrum in a $1^{\circ}\times1^{\circ}$ region of the Galactic center observed with the ASCA satellite is examined in detail, following the first report by Koyama et al. (1996, AAA 65.155.208). The observed spectrum contains prominent emission lines from helium-like and hydrogen-like ions of various elements, and is essentially the same all over the region. If the observed spectrum is thermal emission from hot plasmas, it requires multi-temperature plasma components, each at a different degree of ionization and with a different amount of absorption. The absence of adiabatic cooling and of systematic changes in the degree of ionization over the region is against the Galactic center origin of hot plasmas. A significant broadening of the helium-like and hydrogen-like iron K-lines is confirmed. The line width corresponds to a rms velocity of $\sim3300$ km~s$^{-1}$, which far exceeds the sound velocity in a plasma of $kT\sim14$ keV measured with the Ginga satellite. These facts cast doubt on a thermal origin of the observed X-ray emission.

Interface effects on the shot noise in normal metal- d-wave superconductor Junctions

The current fluctuation in normal metal / d-wave superconductor junctions are studied for various orientation of the crystal by taking account of the spatial variation of the pair potentials. Not only the zero-energy Andreev bound states (ZES) but also the non-zero energy Andreev bound states influence on the properties of differential shot noise. At the tunneling limit, the noise power to current ratio at zero voltage becomes 0, once the ZES are formed at the interface. Under the presence of a subdominant s-wave component at the interface which breaks time-reversal symmetry, the ratio becomes 4e

Spin-polarized tunneling of La0.67Sr0.33MnO3/YBa2Cu3O7-d junctions

The transport properties between ferromagnets and high-Tc superconductors are investigated in La0.67Sr0.33MnO3/YBa2Cu3O7-d (LSMO/YBCO)junctions in the geometry of cross-strip lines. The conductance spectra show zero-bias conductance peaks (ZBCP), reflecting the charge transport in the ab-plane. When an external magnetic field is applied to the junctions, the conductance spectra show two notable features, i.e., an increase of background conductance and an asymmetric ZBCP splitting whose amplitude responds nonlinearly to the applied field. It is shown that the magnetic field response are consistent with a theoretical prediction of tunneling spectroscopy when the presence of a ferromagnetic barrier between a spin-polarized ferromagnet and a d-wave superconductor is assumed.
