Spin current in ferromagnet/insulator/superconductor junctions

A theory of spin polarized tunneling spectroscopy based on a scattering theory is given for tunneling junctions between ferromagnets and d-wave superconductors. The spin filtering effect of an exchange field in the insulator is also treated. We clarify that the properties of the Andreev reflection are largely modified due to a presence of an exchange field in the ferromagnets, and consequently the Andreev reflected quasiparticle shows an evanescent-wave behavior depending on the injection angle of the quasiparticle. Conductance formulas for the spin current as well as the charge current are given as a function of the applied voltage and the spin-polarization in the ferromagnet for arbitrary barrier heights. It is shown that the surface bound states do not contribute to the spin current and that the zero-bias conductance peak expected for a d-wave superconductor splits into two peaks under the influence of the exchange interaction in the insulator.

Theory of the Josephson effect in superconductor / ferromagnet / superconductor junctions

To reveal the influence of the exchange interaction on the Josephson effect, the d.c. Josephson current in unconventional-superconductor / ferromagnet / unconventional-superconductor junctions is studied. When the two superconductors have d-wave symmetry, the Josephson current is drastically suppressed with the increase of the exchange interaction. On the other hand, when the two superconductors have different parities, e.g. s-wave and p-wave, an enhancement of the Josephson current is obtained with the increment of the exchange interaction due to the break-down of SU(2) symmetry in the spin space.

The enhancement and decrement of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect towards the ROSAT Cluster RXJ0658-5557

We report simultaneous observations at 1.2 and 2 mm, with a double channel photometer on the SEST Telescope, of the X-ray cluster RXJ0658-5557 in search for the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (S-Z). The S-Z data were analyzed using the relativistically correct expression for the Comptonization parameter and we find from the detected decrement (2.60 +/- 0.79) ~ 10^{-4}, which is consistent with that computed using the X-ray (ROSAT and ASCA) observations. The uncertainty includes contributions due to statistical uncertainty in the detection and systematics and calibration. The 1.2 {mm} channel data alone gives rise to a larger Comptonization parameter and this result is discussed in terms of contamination from foreground sources and/or dust in the cluster or from a possible systematic effect. We then make use of the combined analysis of the ROSAT and ASCA X-ray satellite observations to determine an isothermal model for the S-Z surface brightness. Since the cluster is asymmetrical and probably in a merging process, models are only approximate. The associated uncertainty can, however, be estimated by exploring a set of alternative models. We then find as the global uncertainty on the Comptonization parameter a factor of 1.3. Combining the S-Z and the X-ray measurements, we determine a value for the Hubble constant. The 2 mm data are consistent with H_0(q_0 = 1/2)= 53^{+38}_{-28} km/s Mpc^{-1}, where the uncertainty is dominated by the uncertainty in models of the X-ray plasma halo.

X-ray observations of the rich cluster CL 0939+4713 and discovery of the strongly variable source RXJ0943.0+4701

Recent X-ray observations of the rich galaxy cluster CL 0939+4713 at z = 0.41 with the ROSAT/HRI as well as with the ASCA/GIS and ASCA/SIS are presented and analysed. With the high resolution imaging data we confirm and extend the earlier impression that the cluster has a lot of substructure. Two maxima of the cluster emission are obvious in the images, each of them shows even some internal structure. For the total luminosity of the cluster in the ROSAT band we obtain L = 6.4_{-0.3}^{+0.7} 10^{44} erg/s. We perform spectral fits for the two ASCA instruments and for the ROSAT/PSPC simultaneously. The most reliable numbers for the temperature and metallicity for the intracluster gas are T = 7.6^{+2.8}_{-1.6} keV and m = 0.22^{+0.24}_{-0.22} Msol, respectively. We find a relatively small total mass, a small gas mass ratio and a small iron mass to light ratio. These numbers together with relatively low luminosity for such an optically rich cluster and the pronounced substructure confirm that CL 0939+4713 is a young cluster still far away from a virialised state. In the same ROSAT/HRI image the X-ray emission of a background quasar (z \approx 2) can clearly be identified. With a luminosity of L \approx 1.4 10^{45} erg/s it belongs to the X-ray brightest quasars. A striking difference between the ROSAT/PSPC and the ROSAT/HRI observations (taken almost five years apart) is the fainting of one X-ray source RXJ0943.0+4701 by at least a factor of ten. We try to identify this source from deep optical data. Our best candidate is a blue compact object, possibly an AGN.

An ASCA-ROSAT Study of the Distant, Lensing Cluster A2390

We present the results of a combined study of ASCA and ROSAT observations of the distant cluster Abell 2390.We determine the surface brightness profile and the gas density distribution of the cluster from the ROSAT PSPC and HRI data. A combined spatially resolved spectral analysis of the ASCA and ROSAT data show that the temperature distribution of the intracluster medium of A2390 is consistent with an isothermal temperature distribution in the range 9 to 12 keV except for the central region for which we find strong evidence of a multi-temperature structure. We determine the gravitational mass profile of the cluster and find a mass value of 2e15 solar masses for a radius 3 Mpc. A comparison of the projected mass profiles of the cluster shows an excellent agreement between the mass determined from X-ray data and the mass determined from the models for the gravitational arc and the weak lensing results.

The Cosmic X-ray Background spectrum observed with ROSAT and ASCA

We have made a series of joint spectral fits for two blank fields, the Lockman Hole and the Lynx-3A field, where a significant amount of both ASCA and ROSAT PSPC data exist after thorough screenings. The ASCA SIS, GIS and ROSAT PSPC spectra from these fields have been fitted simultaneously. Comparison at E>1$keV shows general agreement within 10% in the Lockman Hole data and a 20-30% disagreement in the Lynx-3A data, indicating remaining observation-dependent systematic problems. In both cases, satisfactory fits have been found for the overall 0.1-10 keV spectrum with an extragalactic power-law component (or a broken power-law component with steepening at E<1 keV), a hard thermal component with plasma temperature of kT\approx 0.14 keV and a soft thermal component kT\approx 0.07 keV.

ASCA Observations of a Nearby and Massive Galaxy Cluster, Abell 3627

The results obtained from the ASCA observations of the cluster of galaxies Abell 3627 are presented. This cluster, located behind the Milky way, was recently found to be a nearby, X-ray bright and very rich cluster. Pointed observations onto the central region of the cluster gave a gas temperature of $\sim7$ keV and a metallicity of about 0.2 solar. An offset pointing to a substructure elongated to south-east of the cluster center gave a significantly lower temperature of $\sim 5$ keV. The 2--10 keV luminosity within a radius of 40' (1.1 Mpc) is estimated to be $3.7 \times 10^{44} erg/s$. The X-ray data imply a cluster mass of about $4\times 10^{14}$ $M_\odot$ within 40'.

Theory of Local Density of States of d-Wave Superconducting State Near the Surfaces of the t-J Model

Spatial dependencies of the pair potential and the local density of states near the surfaces of $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-wave superconductors are studied theoretically. The calculation is based on the t-J model within a mean-field theory with Gutzwiller approximation. Various types of surface geometries are considered. Similar to our result in the extended Hubbard model, it is found that the formation of zero-energy states strongly depends on the surface geometry. In addition to this feature, the zero-energy states give peak splitting for the (110) surfaces when the super-exchange interaction $J$ is large. This is due to the induced s-wave component near the surface. The present result explains the microscopic origin of the spontaneous time- reversal symmetry breaking at the surfaces of high-$T_{c}$ superconductors.

Theory of tunneling spectroscopy in superconducting Sr2RuO4

A theory for tunneling spectroscopy in normal metal /insulator/triplet superconductor junction is presented. We assume two kinds of non-unitary triplet superconducting states which are the most promising states for Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$. The calculated conductance spectra showzero-bias peaks as well as gap structures. The existences of residual components in the spectra reflect the non-unitary properties of superconducting states.

Magnetoresistance and magnetic breakdown in the quasi-two-dimensional conductors (BEDT-TTF)$_2$MHg(SCN)$_4$[M=K,Rb,Tl]

The magnetic field dependence of the resistance of (BEDT-TTF)$_2$MHg(SCN)$_4$[M=K,Rb,Tl] in the density-wave phase is explained in terms of a simple model involving magnetic breakdown and a reconstructed Fermi surface. The theory is compared to measurements in pulsed magnetic fields up to 51 T. The value implied for the scattering time is consistent with independent determinations. The energy gap associated with the density-wave phase is deduced from the magnetic breakdown field. Our results have important implications for the phase diagram.

The variable iron K emission line in MCG-6-30-15

We report on the variability of the iron K emission line in the Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG--6-30-15 during a four-day ASCA observation. The line consists of a narrow core at an energy of about 6.4 keV, and a broad red wing extending to below 5 keV, which are interpreted as line emission arising from the inner parts of an accretion disk. The narrow core correlates well with the continuum flux whereas the broad wing weakly anti-correlates. When the source is brightest, the line is dominated by the narrow core, whilst during a deep minimum, the narrow core is very weak and a huge red tail appears. However, at other times when the continuum shows rather rapid changes, the broad wing is more variable than the narrow core, and shows evidence for correlated changes contrary to its long time scale behaviour. The peculiar line profile during the deep minimum spectrum suggests that the line emitting region is very close to a central spinning (Kerr) black hole where enormous gravitational effects operate.

The variable OVIII Warm Absorber in MCG-6-30-15

We present the results of a 4 day ASCA observation of the Seyfert galaxy MCG-6-30-15, focussing on the nature of the X-ray absorption by the warm absorber, characterizd by the K-edges of the intermediately ionized oxygen, OVII and OVIII. We confirm that the column density of OVIII changes on a timescale of $\sim 10^4$~s when the X-ray continuum flux decreases. The significant anti-correlation of column density with continuum flux gives direct evidence that the warm absorber is photoionized by the X-ray continuum. From the timescale of the variation of the OVIII column density, we estimate that it originates from gas within a radius of about $10^{17}\cm$ of the central engine. In contrast, the depth of the OVII edge shows no response to the continuum flux, which indicates that it originates in gas at larger radii. Our results strongly suggest that there are two warm absorbing regions; one located near or within the Broad Line Region, the other associated with the outer molecular torus, scattering medium or Narrow Line Region.

On broad iron K-alpha lines in Seyfert 1 galaxies

The X-ray spectrum obtained by Tanaka et al from a long observation of the active galaxy MCG$-6-30-15$ shows a broad iron K$α$ line skewed to low energies. The simplest interpretation of the shape of the line is that it is due to doppler and gravitational redshifts from the inner parts of a disk about a massive black hole. Similarly broad lines are evident in shorter observations of several other active galaxies. In this paper we investigate other line broadening and skewing mechanisms such as Comptonization in cold gas and doppler shifts from outflows. We have also fitted complex spectral models to the data of MCG$-6-30-15$ to see whether the broad skewed line can be mimicked well by other absorption or emission features. No satisfactory mechanism or spectral model is found, thus strengthening the relativistic disk line model.
