Electric-dipole active two-magnon excitation in {\textit{ab}} spiral spin phase of a ferroelectric magnet Gd$_{\textbf{0.7}}$Tb$_{\textbf{0.3}}$MnO$_{\textbf 3}$

A broad continuum-like spin excitation (1--10 meV) with a peak structure around 2.4 meV has been observed in the ferroelectric $ab$ spiral spin phase of Gd$_{0.7}$Tb$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ by using terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy. Based on a complete set of light-polarization measurements, we identify the spin excitation active for the light $E$ vector only along the a-axis, which grows in intensity with lowering temperature even from above the magnetic ordering temperature but disappears upon the transition to the $A$-type antiferromagnetic phase. Such an electric-dipole active spin excitation as observed at THz frequencies can be ascribed to the two-magnon excitation in terms of the unique polarization selection rule in a variety of the magnetically ordered phases.

Tuning of metal-insulator transition of two-dimensional electrons at parylene/SrTiO$_3$ interface by electric field

Electrostatic carrier doping using a field-effect-transistor structure is an intriguing approach to explore electronic phases by critical control of carrier concentration. We demonstrate the reversible control of the insulator-metal transition (IMT) in a two dimensional (2D) electron gas at the interface of insulating SrTiO$_3$ single crystals. Superconductivity was observed in a limited number of devices doped far beyond the IMT, which may imply the presence of 2D metal-superconductor transition. This realization of a two-dimensional metallic state on the most widely-used perovskite oxide is the best manifestation of the potential of oxide electronics.

Megabits secure key rate quantum key distribution

Quantum cryptography (QC) can provide unconditional secure communication between two authorized parties based on the basic principles of quantum mechanics. However, imperfect practical conditions limit its transmission distance and communication speed. Here we implemented the differential phase shift (DPS) quantum key distribution (QKD) with up-conversion assisted hybrid photon detector (HPD) and achieved 1.3 M bits per second secure key rate over a 10-km fiber, which is tolerant against the photon number splitting (PNS) attack, general collective attacks on individual photons, and any other known sequential unambiguous state discrimination (USD) attacks.

Electrically driven spin excitation in a ferroelectric magnet DyMnO_3

Temperature (5--250 K) and magnetic field (0--70 kOe) variations of the low-energy (1--10 meV) electrodynamics of spin excitations have been investigated for a complete set of light-polarization configurations for a ferroelectric magnet DyMnO$_3$ by using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. We identify the pronounced absorption continuum (1--8 meV) with a peak feature around 2 meV, which is electric-dipole active only for the light $E$-vector along the a-axis. This absorption band grows in intensity with lowering temperature from the spin-collinear paraelectric phase above the ferroelectric transition, but is independent of the orientation of spiral spin plane ($bc$ or $ab$), as shown on the original $P_{\rm s}$ (ferroelectric polarization) $\parallel c$ phase as well as the magnetic field induced $P_{\rm s}\parallel a$ phase. The possible origin of this electric-dipole active band is argued in terms of the large fluctuations of spins and spin-current.

Chemical potential landscape in band filling and bandwidth-control of manganites: Photoemission spectroscopy measurements

We have studied the effects of band filling and bandwidth control on the chemical potential in perovskite manganites $R_{1-x}A_x$MnO$_3$ ($R$ : rare earth, $A$ : alkaline earth) by measurements of core-level photoemission spectra. A suppression of the doping-dependent chemical potential shift was observed in and around the CE-type charge-ordered composition range, indicating that there is charge self-organization such as stripe formation or its fluctuations. As a function of bandwidth, we observed a downward chemical potential shift with increasing bandwidth due to the reduction of the orthorhombic distortion. After subtracting the latter contribution, we found an upward chemical potential shift in the ferromagnetic metallic region $0.3<x<0.5$, which we attribute to the enhancement of double-exchange interaction involving the Jahn-Teller-split $e_g$ band.

Crystal-field level inversion in lightly Mn-doped Sr3Ru2O7

Sr3(Ru1-xMnx)2O7, in which 4d-Ru is substituted by the more localized 3d-Mn, is studied by x-ray dichroism and spin-resolved density functional theory. We find that Mn impurities do not exhibit the same 4+ valence of Ru, but act as 3+ acceptors; the extra eg electron occupies the in-plane 3dx2-y2 orbital instead of the expected out-of-plane 3d3z2-r2. We propose that the 3d-4d interplay, via the ligand oxygen orbitals, is responsible for this crystal-field level inversion and the material's transition to an antiferromagnetic, possibly orbitally-ordered, low-temperature state.

Dopant-dependent impact of Mn-site doping on the critical-state manganites: R0.6Sr0.4MnO3 (R=La, Nd, Sm, and Gd)

Versatile features of impurity doping effects on perovskite manganites, $R_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$MnO$_{3}$, have been investigated with varying the doing species as well as the $R$-dependent one-electron bandwidth. In ferromagnetic-metallic manganites ($R$=La, Nd, and Sm), a few percent of Fe substitution dramatically decreases the ferromagnetic transition temperature, leading to a spin glass insulating state with short-range charge-orbital correlation. For each $R$ species, the phase diagram as a function of Fe concentration is closely similar to that for $R_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$MnO$_{3}$ obtained by decreasing the ionic radius of $R$ site, indicating that Fe doping in the phase-competing region weakens the ferromagnetic double-exchange interaction, relatively to the charge-orbital ordering instability. We have also found a contrastive impact of Cr (or Ru) doping on a spin-glass insulating manganite ($R$=Gd). There, the impurity-induced ferromagnetic magnetization is observed at low temperatures as a consequence of the collapse of the inherent short-range charge-orbital ordering, while Fe doping plays only a minor role. The observed opposite nature of impurity doping may be attributed to the difference in magnitude of the antiferromagnetic interaction between the doped ions.

Charge dynamics in thermally and doping induced insulator-metal transitions of (Ti1-xVx)2O3

Charge dynamics of (Ti1-xVx)2O3 with x=0-0.06 has been investigated by measurements of charge transport and optical conductivity spectra in a wide temperature range of 2-600K with the focus on the thermally and doping induced insulator-metal transitions (IMTs). The optical conductivity peaks for the interband transitions in the 3d t2g manifold are observed in the both insulating and metallic states, while their large variation (by ~0.4 eV) with change of temperature and doping level scales with that of the Ti-Ti dimer bond length, indicating the weakened singlet bond in the course of IMTs. The thermally and V-doping induced IMTs are driven with the increase in carrier density by band-crossing and hole-doping, respectively, in contrast to the canonical IMT of correlated oxides accompanied by the whole collapse of the Mott gap.

Electrically driven single electron spin resonance in a slanting Zeeman field

The rapidly rising fields of spintronics and quantum information science have led to a strong interest in developing the ability to coherently manipulate electron spins. Electron spin resonance (ESR) is a powerful technique to manipulate spins that is commonly achieved by applying an oscillating magnetic field. However, the technique has proven very challenging when addressing individual spins. In contrast, by mixing the spin and charge degrees of freedom in a controlled way through engineered non-uniform magnetic fields, electron spin can be manipulated electrically without the need of high-frequency magnetic fields. Here we realize electrically-driven addressable spin rotations on two individual electrons by integrating a micron-size ferromagnet to a double quantum dot device. We find that the electrical control and spin selectivity is enabled by the micro-magnet's stray magnetic field which can be tailored to multi-dots architecture. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of manipulating electron spins electrically in a scalable way.

Signature of Magnetic Phase Separation in the Ground State of Pr1-xCaxMnO3

Neutron scattering has been used to investigate the evolution of the long- and short-range charge-ordered (CO), ferromagnetic (FM), and antiferromagnetic (AF) correlations in single crystals of Pr1-xCaxMnO3. The existence and population of spin clusters as refected by short-range correlations are found to drastically depend on the doping (x) and temperature (T). Concentrated spin clusters coexist with long-range canted AF order in a wide temperature range in x = 0.3 while clusters do not appear in x = 0.4 crystal. In contrast, both CO and AF order parameters in the x = 0.35 crystal show a precipitous decrease below ~ 35 K where spin clusters form. These results provide direct evidence of magnetic phase separation and indicate that there is a critical doping x_c (close to x = 0.35) that divides the phase-separated site-centered from the homogeneous bond-centered or charge-disproportionated CO ground state.

Current-induced persistent magnetization in a relaxorlike manganite

A single crystal of 7% Fe-doped (La$_{0.7}$Pr$_{0.3}$)$_{0.65}$Ca$_{0.35}$MnO$_3$ shows up as a typical relaxor ferromagnet, where ferromagnetic metallic and charge-orbital-ordered insulating clusters coexist with controllable volume fraction by external stimuli. There, the persistent ferromagnetic metallic state can be produced by an electric-current excitation as the filamentary region, the magnetization in which is increased by ~0.4$μ_{\rm B}$ per Mn. A clear distinction from the current heating effect in a magnetic field, which conversely leads to a decrease in ferromagnetic fraction, enables us to bi-directionally switch both the magnetization and resistance by applying the voltages with different magnitudes.

Doping variation of anisotropic charge and orbital dynamics in Y1-xCaxVO3 : Comparison with La1-xSrxVO3

The doping variation of charge and orbital dynamics in perovskite-type Y1-xCaxVO3 (0<x<0.1) is investigated by measurements of the optical conductivity and Raman scattering spectra in comparison with the larger-bandwidth system La1-xSrxVO3. We also take into consideration the magnitude of the GdFeO3-type orthorhombic lattice distortion, which is large and small in Y1-xCaxVO3 and La1-xSrxVO3, respectively, and discuss its effect on the evolution of charge dynamics. The optical conductivity spectra show that the doped hole is well localized and forms the small polaron like state. The hole dynamics in Y1-xCaxVO3 is nearly isotropic up to the doping level of the orbital order-disorder transition, while that in La1-xSrxVO3 is anisotropic in the lightly doped region due to the one-dimensional orbital exchange interaction. The possible origin of the difference in the hole dynamics is discussed in terms of the local lattice distortion, which is induced by the formation of the small polaron like state and becomes more significant for the reduced one-electron bandwidth. In addition, the optical Mott-gap excitation in the nominally C-type spin and $G$-type orbital ordered phase is distinct from that for La1-xSrxVO3 in its intensity and spectral shape. This suggests that the orthorhombic lattice distortion enhances the modification of the spin and orbital ordering from the pure C-type and G-type, respectively. The systematic study of Raman scattering spectra has shown that the dynamic G-type spin and C-type orbital correlation subsists at low temperatures in the doping induced phase of the nominally C-type SO and G-type OO.

New phase transition in $Pr_{1-x}Ca_xMnO_3$ system: evidence for electrical polarization in charge ordered manganites

A detailed study of the electric field gradient (EFG) across the Pr1-xCaxMnO3 phase diagram and its temperature dependence is given. Clearly, distinct EFG behaviours for samples outside/inside the charge order (CO) region are observed. The EFG temperature dependence evidences a new phase transition occurring over the broad CO region of the phase diagram. This transition is discontinuous and occurs at temperatures between the charge ordering and the Neel temperatures. The features observed in the EFG are associated with polar atomic vibrations which eventually lead to a spontaneous local electric polarization below CO transition.

Spin-driven ferroelectricity and possible antiferroelectricity in triangular lattice antiferromagnets ACrO2 (A = Cu, Ag, Li, or Na)

Correlation between dielectric and magnetic properties was investigated on the triangular lattice antiferromagnets ACrO2 (A= Cu, Ag, Li, or Na) showing 120-degree spiral spin structure with easy-axis anisotropy. For the A= Cu and Ag compounds with delafossite structure, ferroelectric polarization emerges upon the spiral spin order, implying the strong coupling between the ferroelectricity and spiral spin structure. On the other hand, for the A = Li and Na compounds with ordered rock salt structure, no polarization but only clear anomalies in dielectric constant can be observed upon the spiral spin order. The absence of polarization can be interpreted as the antiferroelectric state induced by the alternate stacking of Cr3+ layer with opposite spin vector chirality. These results imply that a vast range of trigonally stacked triangular-lattice systems with 120-degree spin structure can be multiferroic, irrespective of their magnetic anisotropy.

Correlation between spin helicity and electric polarization vector in quantum-spin chain magnet LiCu$_2$O$_2$

Measurements of polarized neutron scattering were performed on a $S=1/2$ chain multiferroic LiCu$_2$O$_2$. In the ferroelectric ground state with the spontaneous polarization along the c-axis, the existence of transverse spiral spin component in the $bc$-plane was confirmed. When the direction of electric polarization is reversed, the vector spin chirality as defined by ${\bf C}_{ij} = {\bf S}_i \times {\bf S}_j$ ($i$ and $j$ being the neighboring spin sites) is observed to be reversed, indicating that the spin-current model or the inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya mechanism is applicable even to this $e_{\mathrm{g}}$-electron quantum-spin system. Differential scattering intensity of polarized neutrons shows a large discrepancy from that expected for the classical-spin $bc$-cycloidal structure, implying the effect of large quantum fluctuation.

Multicritical end-point of the first-order ferromagnetic transition in colossal magnetoresistive manganites

We have studied the bandwidth-temperature-magnetic field phase diagram of RE(0.55)Sr(0.45)MnO(3) colossal magnetoresistance manganites with ferromagnetic metallic (FM) ground state. The bandwidth (or equivalently the double exchange interaction) was controlled both via chemical substitution and hydrostatic pressure with a focus on the vicinity of the critical pressure p* where the character of the zero-field FM transition changes from first to second order. Below p* the first-order FM transition extends up to a critical magnetic field, H_cr. It is suppressed by pressure and approaches zero on the larger bandwidth side where the surface of the first-order FM phase boundary is terminated by a multicritical end-point (p*~32 kbar, T*~188 K, H*=0). The change in the character of the transition and the decrease of the CMR effect is attributed to the reduced CO/OO fluctuations.

Chemical potential shift induced by double-exchange and polaronic effects in Nd_{1-x}Sr_xMnO_3

We have studied the chemical potential shift as a function of temperature in Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ (NSMO) by measurements of core-level photoemission spectra. For ferromagnetic samples ($x=0.4$ and 0.45), we observed an unusually large upward chemical potential shift with decreasing temperature in the low-temperature region of the ferromagnetic metallic (FM) phase. This can be explained by the double-exchange (DE) mechanism if the $e_g$ band is split by dynamical/local Jahn-Teller effect. The shift was suppressed near the Curie temperature ($T_C$), which we attribute to the crossover from the DE to lattice-polaron regimes.

Fe-doping-induced evolution of charge-orbital ordering in a bicritical-state manganite

Impurity effects on the stability of a ferromagnetic metallic state in a bicritical-state manganite, (La0.7Pr0.3)0.65Ca0.35MnO3, on the verge of metal-insulator transition have been investigated by substituting a variety of transition-metal atoms for Mn ones. Among them, Fe doping exhibits the exceptional ability to dramatically decrease the ferromagnetic transition temperature. Systematic studies on the magnetotransport properties and x-ray diffraction for the Fe-doped crystals have revealed that charge-orbital ordering evolves down to low temperatures, which strongly suppresses the ferromagnetic metallic state. The observed glassy magnetic and transport properties as well as diffuse phase transition can be attributed to the phase-separated state where short-range charge-orbital-ordered clusters are embedded in the ferromagnetic metallic matrix. Such a behavior in the Fe-doped manganites form a marked contrast to the Cr-doping effects on charge-orbital-ordered manganites known as impurity-induced collapse of charge-orbital ordering.
