Electron and hole trapping in the Ce3+ and Pr3+ doped lutetium pyrosilicate scintillator crystals studied by electron paramagnetic resonance

Electron and hole trapping was studied in the Ce3+ and Pr3+ doped Lu2Si2O7 scintillation single crystals (LPS:Ce and LPS:Pr) by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR). Detailed EPR measurements of the X-ray irradiated LPS crystals revealed that holes generated by irradiation are predominantly trapped at oxygen lattice ions creating O- centers. The same X-ray irradiation creates also electron type centers which were attributed to Lu2+ ions, where the trapped electron at Lu lattice ion is stabilized by a defect nearby, such as oxygen vacancy and Ir3+ impurity ion. Both the hole and electron centers can be thus considered as a bound small polarons, which makes the charge trapping in scintillation mechanism quite competitive. The hole O- and electron Lu2+ centers show thermal stability well above room temperature. The thermal decays of their concentrations correlate well with the appearance of the thermally stimulated luminescence glow peaks at 470-550 K. The presence of the same intrinsic traps in the Ce and Pr doped LPS crystals suggests that difference in the light yield of these crystals is an intrinsic property of the Ce3+ and Pr3+ activator centers in LPS lattice. Charge traps origin in this pyrosilicate structure and their role in scintillation mechanism is compared with the results previously described in literature in orthosilicates.

Anisotropic behavior of TiB2 nanoparticles reinforced 2024Al composites rolling sheet

The in-plane anisotropy (IPA) of mechanical properties existed in plate products is often undesired since it limits the industrial application and increases the difficulty of material processing. It is thus one of the important factors which requires strict control during the manufacture of high-performance aluminum alloy plates. The anisotropic behavior of TiB2/2024Al composite rolling sheet under different heat treatment is studied in this article. T4 heat treated specimen shows good isotropy of yield strength and its texture components are significantly weakened compared with traditional Al alloys. The evolution of microstructures for T4 specimen was studied. The submicron TiB2 particles increase the driving force of recrystallization during rolling process and static recrystallization (SRX) is stimulated, thus induces texture randomization. Anisotropic behavior of yield strength occurs in specimen after T3 heat treatment. It is supposed that the difference in the activation of slip system under different loading direction gives rise to this anisotropy.

Two years of non-thermal emission from the binary neutron star merger GW170817: rapid fading of the jet afterglow and first constraints on the kilonova fastest ejecta

We present Chandra and VLA observations of GW170817 at ~521-743 days post merger, and a homogeneous analysis of the entire Chandra data set. We find that the late-time non-thermal emission follows the expected evolution from an off-axis relativistic jet, with a steep temporal decay $F_ν\propto t^{-1.95\pm0.15}$ and a simple power-law spectrum $F_ν\propto ν^{-0.575\pm0.007}$. We present a new method to constrain the merger environment density based on diffuse X-ray emission from hot plasma in the host galaxy and we find $n\le 9.6 \times 10^{-3}\,\rm{cm^{-3}}$. This measurement is independent from inferences based on the jet afterglow modeling and allows us to partially solve for model degeneracies. The updated best-fitting model parameters with this density constraint are a fireball kinetic energy $E_0 = 1.5_{-1.1}^{+3.6}\times 10^{49}\,\rm{erg}$ ($E_{iso}= 2.1_{-1.5}^{+6.4}\times10^{52}\, \rm{erg}$), jet opening angle $θ_{0}= 5.9^{+1.0}_{-0.7}\,\rm{deg}$ with characteristic Lorentz factor $Γ_j = 163_{-43}^{+23}$, expanding in a low-density medium with $n_0 = 2.5_{-1.9}^{+4.1} \times 10^{-3}\, \rm{cm^{-3}}$ and viewed $θ_{obs} = 30.4^{+4.0}_{-3.4}\, \rm{deg}$ off-axis. The synchrotron emission originates from a power-law distribution of electrons with $p=2.15^{+0.01}_{-0.02}$. The shock microphysics parameters are constrained to $ε_{\rm{e}} = 0.18_{-0.13}^{+0.30}$ and $ε_{\rm{B}}=2.3_{-2.2}^{+16.0} \times 10^{-3}$. We investigate the presence of X-ray flares and find no statistically significant evidence of $\ge2.5σ$ of temporal variability at any time. Finally, we use our observations to constrain the properties of synchrotron emission from the deceleration of the fastest kilonova ejecta with energy $E_k^{KN}\propto (Γβ)^{-α}$ into the environment, finding that shallow stratification indexes $α\le6$ are disfavored.

Robust concurrent topology optimization of structure and its composite material considering uncertainty with imprecise probability

This paper studied a robust concurrent topology optimization (RCTO) approach to design the structure and its composite materials simultaneously. For the first time, the material uncertainty with imprecise probability is integrated into the multi-scale concurrent topology optimization (CTO) framework. To describe the imprecise probabilistic uncertainty efficiently, the type I hybrid interval random model is adopted. An improved hybrid perturbation analysis (IHPA) method is formulated to estimate the expectation and stand variance of the objective function in the worst case. Combined with the bi-directional evolutionary structural optimization (BESO) framework, the robust designs of the structure and its composite material are carried out. Several 2D and 3D numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method has high efficiency and low precision loss. In addition, the proposed RCTO approach remains efficient in both of linear static and dynamic structures, which shows its extensive adaptability.

Trigonometric Parallaxes Of High-Mass Star Forming Regions: Our View Of The Milky Way

We compile and analyze ~200 trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions of molecular masers associated with very young high-mass stars. These measurements strongly suggest that the Milky Way is a four-arm spiral. Fitting log-periodic spirals to the locations of the masers, allows us to significantly expand our view of the structure of the Milky Way. We present an updated model for its spiral structure and incorporate it into our previously published parallax-based distance-estimation program for sources associated with spiral arms. Modeling the three-dimensional space motions yields estimates of the distance to the Galactic center, Ro = 8.15 +/- 0.15 kpc, the circular rotation speed at the Sun's position, To = 236 +/- 7 km/s, and the nature of the rotation curve. Our data strongly constrain the full circular velocity of the Sun, To + Vsun = 247 +/- 4 km/s, and its angular velocity, (To + Vsun)/Ro = 30.32 +/- 0.27 km/s/kpc. Transforming the measured space motions to a Galactocentric frame which rotates with the Galaxy, we find non-circular velocity components typically about 10 km/s. However, near the Galactic bar and in a portion of the Perseus arm, we find significantly larger non-circular motions. Young high-mass stars within 7 kpc of the Galactic center have a scale height of only 19 pc and, thus, are well suited to define the Galactic plane. We find that the orientation of the plane is consistent with the IAU-defined plane to within +/-0.1 deg., and that the Sun is offset toward the north Galactic pole by Zsun = 5.5 +/- 5.8 pc. Accounting for this offset places the central supermassive black hole, Sgr A*, in the midplane of the Galaxy. Using our improved Galactic parameters, we predict the Hulse-Taylor binary pulsar to be at a distance of 6.54 +/- 0.24 kpc, assuming its orbital decay from gravitational radiation follows general relativity.

The Optical Afterglow of GW170817: An Off-axis Structured Jet and Deep Constraints on a Globular Cluster Origin

We present a revised and complete optical afterglow light curve of the binary neutron star merger GW170817, enabled by deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) F606W observations at $\approx\!584$ days post-merger, which provide a robust optical template. The light curve spans $\approx 110-362$ days, and is fully consistent with emission from a relativistic structured jet viewed off-axis, as previously indicated by radio and X-ray data. Combined with contemporaneous radio and X-ray observations, we find no spectral evolution, with a weighted average spectral index of $\langle β\rangle = -0.583 \pm 0.013$, demonstrating that no synchrotron break frequencies evolve between the radio and X-ray bands over these timescales. We find that an extrapolation of the post-peak temporal slope of GW170817 to the luminosities of cosmological short GRBs matches their observed jet break times, suggesting that their explosion properties are similar, and that the primary difference in GW170817 is viewing angle. Additionally, we place a deep limit on the luminosity and mass of an underlying globular cluster of $L \lesssim 6.7 \times 10^{3}\,L_{\odot}$, or $M \lesssim 1.3 \times 10^{4}\,M_{\odot}$, at least 4 standard deviations below the peak of the globular cluster mass function of the host galaxy, NGC4993. This limit provides a direct and strong constraint that GW170817 did not form and merge in a globular cluster. As highlighted here, HST (and soon JWST) enables critical observations of the optical emission from neutron star merger jets and outflows.

Topological Electronic Structure and Its Temperature Evolution in Antiferromagnetic Topological Insulator MnBi2Te4

Topological quantum materials coupled with magnetism can provide a platform for realizing rich exotic physical phenomena, including quantum anomalous Hall effect, axion electrodynamics and Majorana fermions. However, these unusual effects typically require extreme experimental conditions such as ultralow temperature or sophisticate material growth and fabrication. Recently, new intrinsic magnetic topological insulators were proposed in MnBi2Te4-family compounds - on which rich topological effects could be realized under much relaxed experimental conditions. However, despite the exciting progresses, the detailed electronic structures observed in this family of compounds remain controversial up to date. Here, combining the use of synchrotron and laser light sources, we carried out comprehensive and high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies on MnBi2Te4, and clearly identified its topological electronic structures including the characteristic gapless topological surface states. In addition, the temperature evolution of the energy bands clearly reveals their interplay with the magnetic phase transition by showing interesting differences for the bulk and surface states, respectively. The identification of the detailed electronic structures of MnBi2Te4 will not only help understand its exotic properties, but also pave the way for the design and realization of novel phenomena and applications.

Combination of informational storage and logical processing based on an all-oxide asymmetric multiferroic tunnel junction

Multiferroic tunnel junctions (MFTJs) have already been proved to be promising candidates for application in spintronics devices. The coupling between tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) and tunnel electroresistance (TER) in MFTJs can provide four distinct resistive states in a single memory cell. Here we show that in an all-oxide asymmetric MFTJ of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 /PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 /La0.7Te0.3MnO3 (LSMO/PZT/LTMO) with p-type and n-type electrodes, the intrinsic rectification is observed and can be modified by the ferroelectric polarization of PZT. Owing to the combined TMR, TER and diode effects, two different groups of four resistive states under opposite reading biases are performed. With two parallel asymmetric junctions and the appropriate series resistance, the coexistence of logic units and quaternary memory cells can be realized in the same array devices. The asymmetric MFTJ structure enables more possibilities for designing next generation of multi-states memory and logical devices with higher storage density, lower energy consumption and significantly increased integration level.

Magnetic order in single crystals of Na3Co2SbO6 with a honeycomb arrangement of 3d$^7$ Co$^{2+}$ ions

We have synthesized single crystals of Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ and characterized the structure and magnetic order by measuring anisotropic magnetic properties, heat capacity, x-ray and neutron single crystal diffraction. Magnetic properties and specific heat of polycrystalline Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ were also measured for comparison. Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ crystallizes in a monoclinic structure (space group $C2/m$) with [Co$_2$SbO$_6$]$^{3-}$ layers separated by Na$^+$ ions. The temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility shows significant anisotropic behavior in the whole temperature range 2\,K-350\,K investigated in this work. An effective moment of about 5.5\,$μ_B$/Co$^{2+}$ from a Curie-Weiss fitting of the magnetic susceptibility is larger than the spin only value and signals significant orbital contribution. Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ single crystal undergoes a transition into a long-range antiferromagnetically ordered state below $T_N$=5\,K. Neutron single crystal diffraction confirmed the zigzag magnetic structure with a propagation vector k\,=\,(0.5, 0.5, 0). The ordered moment is found to be 0.9\,$μ_B$ at 4\,K and align along the crystallographic \textit{b}-axis. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the experimentally observed zigzag order is energetically competing with the Neel order. It is also found that the covalency between Co $d$ and O $p$ is quite strong and competes with the local spin-orbit coupling, suggesting a $J_{eff}$=1/2 ground state may not be realized in this compound.

Controlling spin-orbit torque by polarization field in multiferroic BiFeO3 based heterostructures

In the last few years, some ideas of electric manipulations in ferromagnetic heterostructures have been proposed for developing next generation spintronic devices. Among them, the magnetization switching driven by spin-orbit torque (SOT) is being intensely pursued. Especially, how to control the switching current density, which is expected to enrich device functionalities, has aroused much interest among researchers all over the world. In this paper, a novel method to adjust the switching current is proposed, and the BiFeO3 (BFO) based heterostructures with opposite spontaneous polarizations fields show huge changes in both perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and the SOT-induced magnetization switching. The damping-like torques were estimated by using harmonic Hall voltage measurement, and the variation of effective spin Hall angles for the heterostructures with opposite polarizations was calculated to be 272%. At the end of this paper, we have also demonstrated the possible applications of our structure in memory and reconfigurable logic devices.

SCOPE: SCUBA-2 Continuum Observations of Pre-protostellar Evolution - Survey Description and Compact Source Catalogue

We present the first release of the data and compact-source catalogue for the JCMT Large Program SCUBA-2 Continuum Observations of Pre-protostellar Evolution (SCOPE). SCOPE consists of 850-um continuum observations of 1235 Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCCs) made with the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array 2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. These data are at an angular resolution of 14.4 arcsec, significantly improving upon the 353-GHz resolution of Planck at 5 arcmin, and allowing for a catalogue of 3528 compact sources in 558 PGCCs. We find that the detected PGCCs have significant sub-structure, with 61 per cent of detected PGCCs having 3 or more compact sources, with filamentary structure also prevalent within the sample. A detection rate of 45 per cent is found across the survey, which is 95 per cent complete to Planck column densities of $N_{H_{2}}$ $>$ 5 $\times$ 10$^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$. By positionally associating the SCOPE compact sources with YSOs, the star formation efficiency, as measured by the ratio of luminosity to mass, in nearby clouds is found to be similar to that in the more distant Galactic Plane, with the column density distributions also indistinguishable from each other.

Regularization of Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers emission by periodic non-Hermitian potentials

We propose a novel physical mechanism based on periodic non-Hermitian potentials to efficiently control the complex spatial dynamics of broad-area lasers, particularly in Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs), achieving a stable emission of maximum brightness. Radially dephased periodic refractive index and gain-loss modulations accumulate the generated light from the entire active layer and concentrate it around the structure axis to emit narrow, bright beams. The effect is due to asymmetric-inward radial coupling between transverse modes, for particular phase differences of the refractive index and gain-loss modulations. Light is confined into a central beam with large intensity opening the path to design compact, bright and efficient broad-area light sources. We perform a comprehensive analysis to explore the maximum central intensity enhancement and concentration regimes. The study reveals that the optimum schemes are those holding unidirectional inward coupling but not fulfilling a perfect local PT-symmetry.

Heisenberg limited single-mode quantum metrology

Two-mode interferometers, such as Michelson interferometer based on two spatial optical modes, lay the foundations for quantum metrology. Instead of exploring quantum entanglement in the two-mode interferometers, a single bosonic mode also promises a measurement precision beyond the shot-noise limit (SNL) by taking advantage of the infinite-dimensional Hilbert space of Fock states. However, the experimental demonstration still remains elusive. Here, we demonstrate a single-mode phase estimation that approaches the Heisenberg limit (HL) unconditionally. Due to the strong dispersive nonlinearity and long coherence time of a microwave cavity, quantum states of the form $\left(\left|0\right\rangle +\left|N\right\rangle \right)/\sqrt{2}$ are generated, manipulated and detected with high fidelities, leading to an experimental phase estimation precision scaling as $\sim N^{-0.94}$. A $9.1$~$\mathrm{dB}$ enhancement of the precision over the SNL at $N=12$, which is only $1.7$~$\mathrm{dB}$ away from the HL, is achieved. Our experimental architecture is hardware efficient and can be combined with the quantum error correction techniques to fight against decoherence, thus promises the quantum enhanced sensing in practical applications.

An Empirical Template Library for FGK and Late--type A Stars Using LAMOST Observed Spectra

We present an empirical stellar spectra library created using spectra from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) DR5. This library represents a uniform data set ranging from 3750 through 8500K in effective temperature (T_eff), from -2.5 through +1.0 dex in metallicity ([Fe/H]), and from 0 to 5.0 dex in gravity (log g). The spectra in the library have resolution R~1800, with well-calibrated fluxes and rest-framed wavelengths. Using a large number of red stars observed by LAMOST, we generated denser K type templates to fill in data missing from current empirical spectral libraries, particularly the late K type. For K giants, we calibrated the spectroscopic surface gravities against the asteroseismic surface gravities. To verify the reliability of the parameters labeled for this library, we performed an internal cross-validation by using a chi^2 minimization method to interpolate parameters of each individual spectrum using the remaining spectra in the library. We obtained precisions of 41 K, 0.11 dex, and 0.05 dex for T_eff, log g, and [Fe/H], respectively, which means the templates are labeled with correct stellar parameters. Through external comparisons, we confirmed that measurements of the stellar parameters through this library can achieve accuracies of approximately 125K in T_eff, 0.1 dex in [Fe/H] and 0.20 dex in log g without systematic offset. This empirical library is useful for stellar parameter measurements because it has large parameter coverage and full wavelength coverage from 3800 to 8900A.

Anomalous Hall effect induced spin Hall magnetoresistance in an antiferromagnetic Cr2O3/Ta bilayer

The spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) and anomalous Hall effect (AHE) are observed in a Cr2O3/Ta structure. The structural and surface morphology of Cr2O3/Ta bilayers have been investigated. Temperature dependence of longitudinal and transverse resistances measurements confirm the relationship between SMR and AHE signals in Cr2O3/Ta structure. By means of temperature dependent magnetoresistance measurements, the physical origin of SMR in the Cr2O3/Ta structure is revealed, and the contribution to the SMR from the spin current generated by AHE has been proved. The so-called boundary magnetization due to the bulk antiferromagnetic order in Cr2O3 film may be responsible for the relationship of SMR and AHE in the Cr2O3/Ta bilayer.

Quantum Wires and Waveguides Formed in Graphene by Strain

Confinement of electrons in graphene to make devices has proven to be a challenging task. Electrostatic methods fail because of Klein tunneling, while etching into nanoribbons requires extreme control of edge terminations, and bottom-up approaches are limited in size to a few nanometers. Fortunately, its mechanical flexibility raises the possibility of using strain to alter graphene's properties and create novel straintronic devices. Here, we report transport studies of nanowires created by linearly-shaped strained regions resulting from individual folds formed by layer transfer onto hexagonal boron nitride. Conductance measurements across the folds reveal Coulomb blockade signatures, indicating confined charges within these structures, which act as quantum dots. Along folds, we observe sharp features in traverse resistivity measurements, attributed to an amplification of the dot conductance modulations by a resistance bridge incorporating the device. Our data indicates ballistic transport up to ~1 um along the folds. Calculations using the Dirac model including strain are consistent with measured bound state energies and predict the existence of valley-polarized currents. Our results show that graphene folds can act as straintronic quantum wires.

The Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fibre Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) Quasar Survey: Quasar Properties from Data Release Two and Three

This is the second installment for the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fibre Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) Quasar Survey, which includes quasars observed from September 2013 to June 2015. There are 9024 confirmed quasars in DR2 and 10911 in DR3. After cross-match with the SDSS quasar catalogs and NED, 12126 quasars are discovered independently. Among them 2225 quasars were released by SDSS DR12 QSO catalogue in 2014 after we finalised the survey candidates. 1801 sources were identified by SDSS DR14 as QSOs. The remaining 8100 quasars are considered as newly founded, and among them 6887 quasars can be given reliable emission line measurements and the estimated black hole masses. Quasars found in LAMOST are mostly located at low-to-moderate redshifts, with a mean value of 1.5. The highest redshift observed in DR2 and DR3 is 5. We applied emission line measurements to H$α$, H$β$, Mg{\sc ii} and C{\sc iv}. We deduced the monochromatic continuum luminosities using photometry data, and estimated the virial black hole masses for the newly discovered quasars. Results are compiled into a quasar catalog, which will be available online.

Cryogenic Trapped-Ion System for Large Scale Quantum Simulation

We present a cryogenic ion trapping system designed for large scale quantum simulation of spin models. Our apparatus is based on a segmented-blade ion trap enclosed in a 4 K cryostat, which enables us to routinely trap over 100 $^{171}$Yb$^+$ ions in a linear configuration for hours due to a low background gas pressure from differential cryo-pumping. We characterize the cryogenic vacuum by using trapped ion crystals as a pressure gauge, measuring both inelastic and elastic collision rates with the molecular background gas. We demonstrate nearly equidistant ion spacing for chains of up to 44 ions using anharmonic axial potentials. This reliable production and lifetime enhancement of large linear ion chains will enable quantum simulation of spin models that are intractable with classical computer modelling.
