Employing $p+^{58}$Ni elastic scattering for determination of $K$-shell ionization cross section of $^{58}$Ni$^{19+}$ in collisions with hydrogen gas target at 95 MeV/u

We present a new experimental method for measuring inner-shell ionization cross sections of low-charged ions colliding with hydrogen gas target in a storage ring. The method is based on a calibration by the well-known differential cross sections of proton elastic scattering on nuclei. $K$-shell ionization cross section of 1047(100) barn for the 95 MeV/u $^{58}$Ni$^{19+}$ ions colliding with hydrogen atoms was obtained in this work. Compared to the measured ionization cross section, a good agreement is achieved with the prediction by the Relativistic Ionization CODE Modified program (RICODE-M).

Fast radio bursts from activities of neutron stars newborn in BNS mergers: offset, birth rate and observational properties

Young neutron stars (NSs) born in core-collapse explosions are promising candidates for the central engines of fast radio bursts (FRBs), since the first localized repeating burst FRB 121102 happens in a star forming dwarf galaxy, which is similar to the host galaxies of superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) and long gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs). However, FRB 180924 and FRB 190523 are localized to massive galaxies with low rates of star formation, compared with the host of FRB 121102. Meanwhile, the offsets between the bursts and host centers are about 4 kpc and 29 kpc for FRB 180924 and FRB 190523, respectively. These properties of hosts are similar to short gamma-ray bursts \textbf{(SGRBs)}, which are produced by mergers of binary neutron star (BNS) or neutron star-black hole (NS-BH). Therefore, the NSs powering FRBs may be formed in BNS mergers. In this paper, we study the BNS merger rates, merger times, and predict their most likely merger locations for different types of host galaxies using population synthesis method. We find that the BNS merger channel is consistent with the recently reported offsets of FRB 180924 and FRB 190523. The offset distribution of short GRBs is well reproduced by population synthesis using galaxy model which is similar to GRB hosts. The event rate of FRBs (including non-repeating and repeating), is larger than those of BNS merger and short GRBs, which requires a large fraction of observed FRBs emitting several bursts. Using curvature radiation by bunches in NS magnetospheres, we also predict the observational properties of FRBs from BNS mergers, including the dispersion measure, and rotation measure. At late times ($t\geq1$yr), the contribution to dispersion measure and rotation measure from BNS merger ejecta could be neglected.

A bright electromagnetic counterpart to extreme mass ratio inspirals

The extreme mass ratio inspiral (EMRI), defined as a stellar-mass compact object inspiraling into a supermassive black hole (SMBH), has been widely argued to be a low-frequency gravitational wave (GW) source. EMRIs providing accurate measurements of black hole mass and spin, are one of the primary interests for Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). However, it is usually believed that there are no electromagnetic (EM) counterparts to EMRIs. Here we show a new formation channel of EMRIs with tidal disruption flares as EM counterparts. In this scenario, flares can be produced from the tidal stripping of the helium (He) envelope of a massive star by an SMBH. The left compact core of the massive star will evolve into an EMRI. We find that, under certain initial eccentricity and semimajor axis, the GW frequency of the inspiral can enter LISA band within 10 $\sim$ 20 years, which makes the tidal disruption flare an EM precursor to EMRI. Although the event rate is just $2\times 10^{-4}~\rm Gpc^{-3}yr^{-1}$, this association can not only improve the localization accuracy of LISA and help to find the host galaxy of EMRI, but also serve as a new GW standard siren for cosmology.

Multiple chiral doublet bands with octupole correlations in reflection-asymmetric triaxial particle rotor model

A reflection-asymmetric triaxial particle rotor model (RAT-PRM) with a quasi-proton and a quasi-neutron coupled with a reflection-asymmetric triaxial rotor is developed and applied to investigate the multiple chiral doublet (M$χ$D) bands candidates with octupole correlations in $^{78}$Br. The calculated excited energies, energy staggering parameters, and $B(M1)/B(E2)$ ratios are in a reasonable agreement with the data of the chiral doublet bands with positive- and negative-parity. The influence of the triaxial deformation $γ$ on the calculated $B(E1)$ is found to be significant. By changing $γ$ from 16$^\circ$ to 21$^\circ$, the $B(E1)$ values will be enhanced and better agreement with the $B(E1)/B(E2)$ data is achieved. The chiral geometry based on the angular momenta for the rotor, the valence proton and valence neutron is discussed in details.

Precise peculiar velocities from gravitational waves accompanied by electromagnetic signals and cosmological applications

Peculiar velocities are a precious tool to study the large-scale distribution of matter in the local universe and test cosmological models. However, present measurements of peculiar velocities are based on empirical distance indicators, which introduce large error bars. Here we present a new method to measure the peculiar velocities, by directly estimating luminosity distances through waveform signals from inspiralling compact binaries and measuring redshifts from electromagnetic (EM) counterparts. In the future, with the distance uncertainty of GW events reducing to $0.1$ per cent by future GW detectors, the uncertainty of the peculiar velocity can be reduced to $10$ km/s at 100 mega parsecs. We find that dozens of GW events with EM counterparts can provide a Hubble constant $H_0$ uncertainty of $0.5\%$ and the growth rate of structure with a $0.6\%$ precision in the third-generation ground-base GW detectors, which can reconcile the $H_0$ tension and determine the origins for cosmic accelerated expansion.

Spin-orbit torque in completely compensated synthetic antiferromagnet

Synthetic antiferromagnets (SAF) have been proposed to replace ferromagnets in magnetic memory devices to reduce the stray field, increase the storage density and improve the thermal stability. Here we investigate the spin-orbit torque in a perpendicularly magnetized Pt/[Co/Pd]/Ru/[Co/Pd] SAF structure, which exhibits completely compensated magnetization and an exchange coupling field up to 2100 Oe. The magnetizations of two Co/Pd layers can be switched between two antiparallel states simultaneously by spin-orbit torque. The magnetization switching can be read out due to much stronger spin-orbit coupling at bottom Pt/[Co/Pd] interface compared to its upper counterpart without Pt. Both experimental and theoretical analyses unravel that the torque efficiency of antiferromagnetic coupled stacks is significantly higher than the ferromagnetic counterpart, making the critical switching current of SAF comparable to the conventional single ferromagnet. Besides adding an important dimension to spin-orbit torque, the efficient switching of completely compensated SAF might advance magnetic memory devices with high density, high speed and low power consumption.

Universal scaling of the pion, kaon and proton $p_{\rm{T}}$ spectra in Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV

With the experimental data collected by the ALICE collaboration in Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair 2.76 TeV for six different centralities (0-5$\%$, 5-10$\%$, 10-20$\%$, 20-40$\%$, 40-60$\%$ and 60-80$\%$), we investigate the scaling property of the pion, kaon and proton transverse momentum ($p_{\rm{T}}$) spectra at these centralities. We show that in the low $p_{\rm{T}}$ region with $p_{\rm T} \leq$ 2.75 (3.10 and 2.35) GeV/c the pion (kaon and proton) spectra exhibit a scaling behaviour independent of the centrality of the collisions. This scaling behaviour arises when these spectra are presented in terms of a suitable variable, $z=p_{\rm{T}}/K$. The scaling parameter $K$ is determined by the quality factor method and is parameterized by $a \langle N_{\rm{part}}\rangle^{b}$, where $\langle N_{\rm{part}}\rangle$ is the average value of the number of participating nucleons, $a$ and $b$ are free parameters, $b$ characterizes the rate at which $\textrm{ln} K$ changes with $\textrm{ln} \langle N_{\rm{part}}\rangle$. The values of $b$ for pions and kaons are consistent within uncertainties, while they are smaller than that for protons. In the high $p_{\rm{T}}$ region, due to the suppression of the spectra, a violation of the proposed scaling is observed going from central to peripheral collisions. The more peripheral the collisions are, the more clearly violated the proposed scaling becomes. In the framework of the colour string percolation model, we argue that the pions, kaons and protons originate from the fragmentation of clusters which are formed by strings overlapping and the cluster's fragmentation functions are different for different hadrons. The scaling behaviour of the pion, kaon and proton spectra in the low $p_{\rm T}$ region can be simultaneously explained by the colour string percolation model in a qualitative way.

New high-spin structure and possible chirality in $^{109}$In

High-spin structure of $^{109}$In has been investigated with the $^{100}$Mo($^{14}$N, 5$n$)$^{109}$In reaction at a beam energy of 78 MeV using the in-beam $γ$ spectroscopic method. The level scheme of $^{109}$In has been modified considerably and extended by 46 new $γ$-rays to the highest excited state at 8.979 MeV and $J^π$=(45/2$^{+}$). The new level scheme consists of eight bands, six of which are identified as dipole bands. The configurations have been tentatively assigned with the help of the systematics of neighboring odd-$A$ indium isotopes and the experimental aligned angular momenta. The dipole bands are then compared with the titled axis cranking calculation in the framework of covariant density function theory (TAC-CDFT). The results of theoretical calculation based on the configurations, which involve one proton hole at the $g_{9/2}$ orbital and two or four unpaired neutrons at $g_{7/2}$, $d_{5/2}$ and $h_{11/2}$ orbitals, show that the shape of $^{109}$In undergoes an evolution on both $β$ and $γ$ deformations and possible chirality is suggested in $^{109}$In.

Testing the isotropy of the Universe with type Ia supernovae in a model-independent way

In this paper, we study an anisotropic universe model with Bianchi-I metric using Joint Light-curve Analysis (JLA) sample of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). Because light-curve parameters of SNe Ia vary with different cosmological models and SNe Ia samples, we fit the SNe Ia light-curve parameters and cosmological parameters simultaneously employing Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. Therefore, the results on the amount of deviation from isotropy of the dark energy equation of state ($δ$), and the level of anisotropy of the large-scale geometry ($Σ_0$) at present, are totally model-independent. The constraints on the skewness and cosmic shear are $-0.101<δ<0.071$ and $-0.007<Σ_0<0.008$. This result is consistent with a standard isotropic universe ($δ=Σ_0=0$). However, a moderate level of anisotropy in the geometry of the Universe and the equation of state of dark energy, is allowed. Besides, there is no obvious evidence for a preferred direction of anisotropic axis in this model.

Tidal wave in $^{102}$Pd: An extended five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian description

The five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian based on the covariant density functional theory is applied to investigate the observed tidal wave mode in the yrast band of $^{102}$Pd. The energy spectra, the relations between the spin and the rotational frequency, and the ratios of $B(E2)/\mathcal{J}(I)$ in the yrast band are well reproduced by introducing the empirical $ab$ formula for the moments of inertia. This $ab$ formula is related to the fourth order effect of collective momentum in the collective Hamiltonian. It is also shown that the shape evolution in the tidal wave is determined microscopically by the competition between the rotational kinetic energy and the collective potential in the framework of the collective Hamiltonian.

Energy deposition by heavy ions: Additivity of kinetic and potential energy contributions in hillock formation on CaF2

The formation of nano-hillocks on CaF2 crystal surfaces by individual ion impact has been studied using medium energy (3 and 5 MeV) highly charged ions (Xe19+ to Xe30+) as well as swift (kinetic energies between 12 and 58 MeV) heavy ions. For very slow highly charged ions the appearance of hillocks is known to be linked to a threshold in potential energy while for swift heavy ions a minimum electronic energy loss is necessary. With our results we bridge the gap between these two extreme cases and demonstrate, that with increasing energy deposition via electronic energy loss the potential energy threshold for hillock production can be substantially lowered. Surprisingly, both mechanisms of energy deposition in the target surface seem to contribute in an additive way, as demonstrated when plotting the results in a phase diagram. We show that the inelastic thermal spike model, originally developed to describe such material modifications for swift heavy ions, can be extended to case where kinetic and potential energies are deposited into the surface.

Quantum oscillations in Kondo Insulator SmB$_6$

In Kondo insulator samarium hexaboride SmB$_6$, strong correlation and band hybridization lead to an insulating gap and a diverging resistance at low temperature. The resistance divergence ends at about 5 Kelvin, a behavior recently demonstrated to arise from the surface conductance. However, questions remain whether and where a topological surface state exists. Quantum oscillations have not been observed to map the Fermi surface. We solve the problem by resolving the Landau Level quantization and Fermi surface topology using torque magnetometry. The observed Fermi surface suggests a two dimensional surface state on the (101) plane. Furthermore, the tracking of the Landau Levels in the infinite magnetic field limit points to -1/2, which indicates a 2D Dirac electronic state.

Quantum-Fluctuation-Initiated Coherence in Multi-Octave Raman Optical Frequency Combs

We show experimentally and theoretically that the spectral components of a multi-octave frequency comb spontaneously created by stimulated Raman scattering in a hydrogen-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber exhibit strong self coherence and mutual coherence within each 12 ns driving laser pulse. This coherence arises in spite of the field's initiation being from quantum zero-point fluctuations, which causes each spectral component to show large phase and energy fluctuations. This points to the possibility of an optical frequency comb with nonclassical correlations between all comb lines.

Fabrication of graphene nanogap with crystallographically matching edges and its electron emission properties

We demonstrate the fabrication of graphene nanogap with crystallographically matching edges on SiO2Si substrates by divulsion. The current-voltage measurement is then performed in a high-vacuum chamber for a graphene nanogap with few hundred nanometers separation. The parallel edges help to build uniform electrical field and allow us to perform electron emission study on individual graphene. It was found that current-voltage characteristics are governed by the space-charge-limited flow of current at low biases while the FN model fits the I-V curves in high voltage regime. We also examined electrostatic gating effect of the vacuum electronic device. Graphene nanogap with atomically parallel edges may open up opportunities for both fundamental and applied research of vacuum nanoelectronics.

Electron spin relaxation in cubic GaN quantum dots

The spin relaxation time $T_{1}$ in zinc blende GaN quantum dot is investigated for different magnetic field, well width and quantum dot diameter. The spin relaxation caused by the two most important spin relaxation mechanisms in zinc blende semiconductor quantum dots, {i.e.} the electron-phonon scattering in conjunction with the Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling and the second-order process of the hyperfine interaction combined with the electron-phonon scattering, are systematically studied. The relative importance of the two mechanisms are compared in detail under different conditions. It is found that due to the small spin orbit coupling in GaN, the spin relaxation caused by the second-order process of the hyperfine interaction combined with the electron-phonon scattering plays much more important role than it does in the quantum dot with narrower band gap and larger spin-orbit coupling, such as GaAs and InAs.

Control of spin coherence in semiconductor double quantum dots

We propose a scheme to manipulate the spin coherence in vertically coupled GaAs double quantum dots. Up to {\em ten} orders of magnitude variation of the spin relaxation and {\em two} orders of magnitude variation of the spin dephasing can be achieved by a small gate voltage applied vertically on the double dot. Specially, large variation of spin relaxation still exists at 0 K. In the calculation, the equation-of-motion approach is applied to obtain the electron decoherence time and all the relevant spin decoherence mechanisms, such as the spin-orbit coupling together with the electron--bulk-phonon scattering, the direct spin-phonon coupling due to the phonon-induced strain, the hyperfine interaction and the second-order process of electron-phonon scattering combined with the hyperfine interaction, are included. The condition to obtain the large variations of spin coherence is also addressed.

Reexamination of spin decoherence in semiconductor quantum dots from equation-of-motion approach

The longitudinal and transversal spin decoherence times, $T_1$ and $T_2$, in semiconductor quantum dots are investigated from equation-of-motion approach for different magnetic fields, quantum dot sizes, and temperatures. Various mechanisms, such as the hyperfine interaction with the surrounding nuclei, the Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling together with the electron--bulk-phonon interaction, the $g$-factor fluctuations, the direct spin-phonon coupling due to the phonon-induced strain, and the coaction of the electron--bulk/surface-phonon interaction together with the hyperfine interaction are included. The relative contributions from these spin decoherence mechanisms are compared in detail. In our calculation, the spin-orbit coupling is included in each mechanism and is shown to have marked effect in most cases. The equation-of-motion approach is applied in studying both the spin relaxation time $T_1$ and the spin dephasing time $T_2$, either in Markovian or in non-Markovian limit. When many levels are involved at finite temperature, we demonstrate how to obtain the spin relaxation time from the Fermi Golden rule in the limit of weak spin-orbit coupling. However, at high temperature and/or for large spin-orbit coupling, one has to use the equation-of-motion approach when many levels are involved. Moreover, spin dephasing can be much more efficient than spin relaxation at high temperature, though the two only differs by a factor of two at low temperature.
