Coherent Ising machines -- Quantum optics and neural network perspectives

A coherent Ising machine (CIM) is a network of optical parametric oscillators (OPOs), in which the "strongest" collective mode of oscillation at well above threshold corresponds to an optimum solution of a given Ising problem. When a pump rate or network coupling rate is increased from below to above threshold, however, the eigenvectors with a smallest eigenvalue of Ising coupling matrix [J_ij] appear near threshold and impede the machine to relax to true ground states. Two complementary approaches to attack this problem are described here. One approach is to utilize squeezed/anti-squeezed vacuum noise of OPOs below threshold to produce coherent spreading over numerous local minima via quantum noise correlation, which could enable the machine to access either true ground states or excited states with eigen-energies close enough to that of ground states above threshold. The other approach is to implement real-time error correction feedback loop so that the machine migrates from one local minimum to another during an explorative search for ground states. Finally, a set of qualitative analogies connecting the CIM and traditional computer science techniques are pointed out. In particular, belief propagation and survey propagation used in combinatorial optimization are touched upon.

Reexamination of $^{6}$Li scattering as a Probe to Investigate the Isoscalar Giant Resonances in Nuclei

Inelastic ${}^{6}$Li scattering at 100 MeV/u on ${}^{12}$C and ${}^{93}$Nb have been measured with the high-resolution magnetic spectrometer Grand Raiden. The magnetic-rigidity settings of the spectrometer covered excitation energies from 10 to 40 MeV and scattering angles in the range $0^\circ < θ_{\text{lab.}}< 2^\circ$. The isoscalar giant monopole resonance was selectively excited in the present data. Measurements free of instrumental background and the very favorable resonance-to-continuum ratio of ${}^{6}$Li scattering allowed for precise determination of the $E0$ strengths in ${}^{12}$C and ${}^{93}$Nb. It was found that the monopole strength in ${}^{12}$C exhausts $52 \pm 3^\text{(stat.)} \pm 8 ^\text{(sys.)}$\% of the energy-weighted sum rule (EWSR), which is considerably higher than results from previous $α$-scattering experiments. The monopole strength in ${}^{93}$Nb exhausts $92 \pm 4^\text{(stat.)} \pm 10 ^\text{(sys.)}$\% of the EWSR, and it is consistent with measurements of nuclei with mass number of $A\approx90$. Such comparison indicates that the isoscalar giant monopole resonance distributions in these nuclei are very similar, and no influence due to nuclear structure was observed.

Possible lightest $Ξ$ Hypernucleus with Modern $ΞN$ Interactions

Experimental evidence exists that the $Ξ$-nucleus interaction is attractive. We search for $NNΞ$ and $NNNΞ$ bound systems on the basis of the AV8 $NN$ potential combined with either a phenomenological Nijmegen $ΞN$ potential or a first principles HAL QCD $ΞN$ potential. The binding energies of the three-body and four-body systems (below the $d+Ξ$ and $^3{\rm H}$/$^3{\rm He}+Ξ$ thresholds, respectively) are calculated by a high precision variational approach, the Gaussian Expansion Method. Although the two $ΞN$ potentials have significantly different isospin ($T$) and spin ($S$) dependence, the $NNNΞ$ system with quantum numbers $(T=0, J^π=1^+$) appears to be bound (one deep for Nijmegen and one shallow for HAL QCD) below the $^3{\rm H}$/$^3{\rm He}+Ξ$ threshold. Experimental implications for such a state are discussed.

First Detection of Photons with Energy Beyond 100 TeV from an Astrophysical Source

We report on the highest energy photons from the Crab Nebula observed by the Tibet air shower array with the underground water-Cherenkov-type muon detector array. Based on the criterion of muon number measured in an air shower, we successfully suppress 99.92% of the cosmic-ray background events with energies $E>100$ TeV. As a result, we observed 24 photon-like events with $E>100$ TeV against 5.5 background events, which corresponds to 5.6$σ$ statistical significance. This is the first detection of photons with $E>100$ TeV from an astrophysical source.

Influence of Earth-Directed Coronal Mass Ejections on the Sun's Shadow Observed by the Tibet-III Air Shower Array

We examine the possible influence of Earth-directed coronal mass ejections (ECMEs) on the Sun's shadow in the 3~TeV cosmic-ray intensity observed by the Tibet-III air shower (AS) array. We confirm a clear solar-cycle variation of the intensity deficit in the Sun's shadow during ten years between 2000 and 2009. This solar-cycle variation is overall reproduced by our Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of the Sun's shadow based on the potential field model of the solar magnetic field averaged over each solar rotation period. We find, however, that the magnitude of the observed intensity deficit in the Sun's shadow is significantly less than that predicted by MC simulations, particularly during the period around solar maximum when a significant number of ECMEs is recorded. The $χ^2$ tests of the agreement between the observations and the MC simulations show that the difference is larger during the periods when the ECMEs occur, and the difference is reduced if the periods of ECMEs are excluded from the analysis. This suggests the first experimental evidence of the ECMEs affecting the Sun's shadow observed in the 3~TeV cosmic-ray intensity.

Evaluation of the Interplanetary Magnetic Field Strength Using the Cosmic-Ray Shadow of the Sun

We analyze the Sun's shadow observed with the Tibet-III air shower array and find that the shadow's center deviates northward (southward) from the optical solar disc center in the "Away" ("Toward") IMF sector. By comparing with numerical simulations based on the solar magnetic field model, we find that the average IMF strength in the "Away" ("Toward") sector is $1.54 \pm 0.21_{\rm stat} \pm 0.20_{\rm syst}$ ($1.62 \pm 0.15_{\rm stat} \pm 0.22_{\rm syst}$) times larger than the model prediction. These demonstrate that the observed Sun's shadow is a useful tool for the quantitative evaluation of the average solar magnetic field.

Neutron-star radii based on realistic nuclear interactions

The existence of neutron stars with $2M_\odot$ requires the strong stiffness of the equation of state (EoS) of neutron-star matter. We introduce a multi-pomeron exchange potential (MPP) working universally among 3- and 4-baryons to stiffen the EoS. Its strength is restricted by analyzing the nucleus-nucleus scattering with the G-matrix folding model. The EoSs are derived using the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (BHF) and the cluster variational method (CVM) with the nuclear interactions ESC and AV18. The mass-radius relations are derived by solving the Tolmann-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equation, where the maximum masses over $2M_\odot$ are obtained on the basis of the terrestrial data. Neutron-star radii $R$ at a typical mass $1.5M_\odot$ are predicted to be $12.3\!\sim\!13.0$ km. The uncertainty of calculated radii is mainly from the ratio of 3- and 4-pomeron coupling constants, which cannot be fixed by any terrestrial experiment. Though values of $R(1.5M_\odot)$ are not influenced by hyperon-mixing effects, finely-observed values for them indicate degrees of EoS softening by hyperon mixing in the region of $M\!\sim\!2M_\odot$. If $R(1.5M_\odot)$ is less than about 12.4 km, the softening of EoS by hyperon mixing has to be weak. Useful information can be expected by the space mission NICER offering precise measurements for neutron-star radii within $\pm 5\%$.

Unusual coexistence of negative/positive charge-transfer in mixed-valence Na$_x$Ca$_{1-x}$Cr$_2$O$_4$

We have investigated the electronic structure of Na$_x$Ca$_{1-x}$Cr$_2$O$_4$ using x-ray absorption spectroscopy together with Anderson impurity model calculations with full multiplets. We show Na$_x$Ca$_{1-x}$Cr$_2$O$_4$ taking a novel mixed-valence electronic state in which the positive charge-transfer (CT) and the negative self-doped states coexist. While CaCr$_2$O$_4$ (one end member) exhibits a typical CT nature with strong covalent character, Na substitution causes a self-doped state with an oxygen hole. In NaCr$_2$O$_4$ (the other end member), positive CT and negative self-doped states coexist with equal weight. This unusual electronic state is in sharp contrast to the conventional mixed-valence description, in which the ground state can be described by the mixture of Cr$^{3+}$ ($3d^3$) and Cr$^{4+}$ ($3d^2$).

Effects of hyperonic many-body force on $B_Λ$ values of hypernuclei

The stiff equation of state (EoS) giving the neutron-star mass of $2M_{\odot}$ suggests the existence of strongly repulsive many-body effect (MBE) not only in nucleon channels but also in hyperonic ones. As a specific model for MBE, the repulsive multi-pomeron exchange potential (MPP) is added to the two-body interaction together with the phenomenological three-body attraction. For various versions of the Nijmegen interaction models, the MBE parts are determined so as to reproduce the observed data of $B_Λ$. The mass dependence of $B_Λ$ values is shown to be reproduced well by adding MBE with the strong MPP repulsion assuring the stiff EoS of hyperon-mixed neutron-star matter, when $P$-state components of the adopted interaction model lead to almost vanishing contributions. The nuclear matter $Λ\!N$ $G$-matrix interactions are derived and used in $Λ$ hypernuclei on the basis of the averaged-density approximation (ADA). The $B_Λ$ values of hypernuclei with $9 \le A \le 59$ are analyzed in the framework of Antisymmetrized Molecular Dynamics with use of the two types of $Λ\!N$ $G$-matrix interactions including strong and weak MPP repulsions. The calculated values of $B_Λ$ reproduce the experimental data finely within a few hundred keV. The values of $B_Λ$ in $p$-states also can be reproduced well, when ADA is modified to be suitable also to weakly-bound $Λ$ states.

Observation of a dispersive charge mode in hole-doped cuprates using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the oxygen K edge

We investigate electronic excitations in La2-x(Br,Sr)xCuO4 using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the oxygen K edge. RIXS spectra of the hole-doped cuprates show clear momentum dependence below 1 eV. The spectral weight exhibits positive dispersion and shifts to higher energy with increasing hole concentration. Theoretical calculation of the dynamical charge structure factor on oxygen orbitals in a three-band Hubbard model is consistent with the experimental observation of the momentum and doping dependence, and therefore the dispersive mode is ascribed to intraband charge excitations which have been observed in electron-doped cuprates.

Missing-mass spectroscopy with the ${}^{6}$Li($π^{-}, K^{+}$)X reaction to search for ${}^{6}_Λ$H

We searched for the bound state of the neutron-rich $Λ$-hypernucleus ${}^{6}_Λ$H, using the ${}^{6}$Li($π^{-}, K^{+}$)X double charge-exchange reaction at a $π^{-}$ beam momentum of 1.2 GeV/c at J-PARC. A total of $1.4 \times 10^{12}$ $π^{-}$ was driven onto a ${}^{6}$Li target of 3.5-g/$\rm cm^2$ thickness. No event was observed below the bound threshold, i.e., the mass of ${}^{4}_Λ$H + 2n, in the missing-mass spectrum of the ${}^{6}$Li($π^{-}, K^{+}$)X reaction in the $2^{\circ}$ < $θ_{πK}$ < $20^{\circ}$ angular range. Furthermore, no event was found up to 2.8 MeV/$c^2$ above the bound threshold. We obtained the the double-differential cross section spectra of the ${}^{6}$Li($π^{-}, K^{+}$)X reaction in the angular range of $2^{\circ}$ < $θ_{πK}$ < $14^{\circ}$. An upper limit of 0.56 nb/sr (90% C.L.) was obtained for the production cross section of the ${}^{6}_Λ$H hypernucleus bound state. In addition, not only the bound state region, but also the $Λ$ continuum region and part of the $Σ^{-}$ quasi-free production region of the ${}^{6}$Li($π^{-}, K^{+}$)X reaction, were obtained with high statistics. The present missing-mass spectrum will facilitate the investigation of the $Σ^{-}$-nucleus optical potential for $Σ^{-}$-${}^{5}$He through spectrum shape analysis.

Ultrafast Coherent Manipulation of Trions in Site-Controlled Nanowire Quantum Dots

Physical implementations of large-scale quantum processors based on solid-state platforms benefit from realizations of quantum bits positioned in regular arrays. Self-assembled quantum dots are well-established as promising candidates for quantum optics and quantum information processing, but they are randomly positioned. Site-controlled quantum dots, on the other hand, are grown in pre-defined locations, but have not yet been sufficiently developed to be used as a platform for quantum information processing. In this letter we demonstrate all-optical ultrafast complete coherent control of a qubit formed by the single-spin/trion states of a charged site-controlled nanowire quantum dot. Our results show that site-controlled quantum dots in nanowires are promising hosts of charged-exciton qubits, and that these qubits can be cleanly manipulated in the same fashion as has been demonstrated in randomly-positioned quantum dot samples. Our findings suggest that many of the related excitonic qubit experiments that have been performed over the past 15 years may work well in the more scalable site-controlled systems, making them very promising for the realization of quantum hardware.

Medium effect in high-density nuclear matter probed by systematic analyses of nucleus-nucleus elastic scattering

We investigate the property of the high-density nuclear matter probed by the nucleus-nucleus elastic scattering in the framework of the double-folding (DF) model with the complex $G$-matrix interaction. The medium effect including three-body-force (TBF) effect is investigated with present two methods based on the frozen density approximation (FDA). The medium effect is clearly seen on the potential and the elastic cross section for the $^{16}$O + $^{16}$O system at $E/A =$ 70 MeV. The crucial role of the medium effect is also confirmed with other effective nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) interactions. In addition, the present methods are applied to other heavy-ion elastic scattering systems. Again, the medium effect is clearly seen in the heavy-ion elastic cross section. The medium effect on the elastic cross section becomes invisible with the increase of the target mass and the incident energy (up to $E/A =$ 200 MeV). However, the medium effect is again important to fix the heavy-ion scattering over $E/A =$ 200 MeV. Finally, we make clear the crucial role of the TBF effect up to $k_F =$ 1.6 fm$^{-1}$ in the nucleus-nucleus elastic scattering.

Competitive effects of nuclear deformation and density dependence of $Λ\!N$ interaction

Competitive effects of nuclear deformation and density dependence of $Λ\!N$-interaction in $Λ$ binding energies $B_Λ$ of hypernuclei are studied systematically on the basis of the baryon-baryon interaction model ESC including many-body effects. By using the $Λ\!N$ G-matrix interaction derived from ESC, we perform microscopic calculations of $B_Λ$ in $Λ$ hypernuclei within the framework of the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics under the averaged-density approximation. The calculated values of $B_Λ$ reproduce experimental data within a few hundred keV in the wide mass regions from 9 to 51. It is found that competitive effects of nuclear deformation and density dependence of $Λ\!N$-interaction work decisively for fine tuning of $B_Λ$ values.

Franck-Condon Blockade in a Single-Molecule Transistor

We investigate vibron-assisted electron transport in single-molecule transistors containing an individual Fe4 Single-Molecule Magnet. We observe a strong suppression of the tunneling current at low bias in combination with vibron-assisted excitations. The observed features are explained by a strong electron-vibron coupling in the framework of the Franck-Condon model supported by density-functional theory.

Equation of state for neutron stars with hyperons by the variational method

We investigate the effects of the odd-state part of bare $ΛΛ$ interactions on the structure of neutron stars (NSs) by constructing equations of state (EOSs) for uniform nuclear matter containing $Λ$ and $Σ^-$ hyperons with use of the cluster variational method. The isoscalar part of the Argonne v18 two-nucleon potential and the Urbana IX three-nucleon potential are employed as the interactions between nucleons, whereas, as the bare $ΛN$ and even-state $ΛΛ$ interactions, two-body central potentials that are determined so as to reproduce the experimental data on single- and double-$Λ$ hypernuclei are adopted. In addition, the $Σ^- N$ interaction is constructed so as to reproduce the empirical single-particle potential of $Σ^-$ in symmetric nuclear matter. Since the odd-state part of the $ΛΛ$ interaction is not known owing to lack of experimental data, we construct four EOSs of hyperonic nuclear matter, each with a different odd-state part of the $ΛΛ$ interaction. The EOS obtained for NS matter becomes stiffer as the odd-state $ΛΛ$ interaction becomes more repulsive, and correspondingly the maximum mass of NSs increases. It is interesting that the onset density of $Σ^-$ depends strongly on the repulsion of the odd-state $ΛΛ$ interaction. Furthermore, we take into account the three-baryon repulsive force to obtain results that are consistent with observational data on heavy NSs.

Exciton-Polariton Trapping and Potential Landscape Engineering

Exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities have advanced to become a model system for studying dynamical Bose-Einstein condensation, macroscopic coherence, many-body effects, nonclassical states of light and matter, and possibly quantum phase transitions in a solid state. Being low mass bosons, these light-matter quasiparticles can condense at comparably high temperatures up to 300K, while preserving fundamental properties such as coherence in space and time domain even when they are out of equilibrium with the environment. Although the presence of an in-plane polariton confinement potential is not strictly necessary in order to observe condensation of polaritons, engineering the polariton confinement is a key to controlling, shaping and directing the flow of polaritons. Prototype polariton-based optoelectronic devices rely on ultrafast photon-like velocities and strong nonlinearities, as well as on tailored confinement. Nanotechnology provides several pathways to achieving such a confinement, and the specific features and advantages of the different techniques are discussed in this paper. As hybrid exciton-photon quasiparticles, polaritons can be trapped via their excitonic as well as their photonic component, which leads to a wide choice of highly complementary techniques. Here we highlight the almost free choice of trapping geometries and depths of confinement that provides a powerful tool for control and manipulation of polariton systems both in semi-classical and quantum domain. Furthermore, the possibility to observe effects of polariton blockade, Mott insulator physics, and population of higher-order bands in sophisticated lattice potentials is discussed. The observation of such effects will signify the opportunity for the realization of novel polaritonic non-classical light sources and quantum simulators.

Hyperon-mixed neutron star with universal many-body repulsion

Neutron stars with large masses $\sim 2M_{\odot}$ require the hard stiffness of equation of state (EoS) of neutron-star matter. On the other hand, hyperon mixing brings about remarkable softening of EoS. In order to solve this problem, a multi-pomeron exchange potential (MPP) is introduced as a model for the universal many-body repulsion in baryonic systems on the basis of the Extended Soft Core (ESC) baryon-baryon interaction. The strength of MPP is determined by analyzing the nucleus-nucleus scattering with the G-matrix folding model. The interactions in $Λ\!N$, $Σ\!N$ and $Ξ\!N$ channels are shown to be consistent with experimental indications. The EoS in neutron-star matter with hyperon mixing is obtained from ESC in addition of MPP, and mass-radius relations of neutron stars are derived. The maximum mass is shown to reach $2M_{\odot}$ even in the case of including hyperon mixing on the basis of model-parameters determined by terrestrial experiments.
