Observation of Spin-Dependent Charge Symmetry Breaking in $ΛN$ Interaction: Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy of $^4_{Λ}$He

The energy spacing between the ground-state spin doublet of $^4_Λ$He(1$^+$,0$^+$) was determined to be $1406 \pm 2 \pm 2$ keV, by measuring $γ$ rays for the $1^+ \to 0^+$ transition with a high efficiency germanium detector array in coincidence with the $^4$He$(K^-,π^-)$ $^4_Λ$He reaction at J-PARC. In comparison to the corresponding energy spacing in the mirror hypernucleus $^4_Λ$H, the present result clearly indicates the existence of charge symmetry breaking (CSB) in $ΛN$ interaction. It is also found that the CSB effect is large in the $0^+$ ground state but is by one order of magnitude smaller in the $1^+$ excited state, demonstrating that the $ΛN$ CSB interaction has spin dependence.

High Efficiency CVD Graphene-lead (Pb) Cooper Pair Splitter

We demonstrate high efficiency Cooper pair splitting in a graphene-based device. We utilize a true Y-shape design effectively placing the splitting channels closer together: graphene is used as the central superconducting electrode as well as QD output channels, unlike previous designs where a conventional superconductor was used with tunnel barriers to the quantum dots (QD) of a different material. Superconductivity in graphene is induced via the proximity effect, thus resulting in both a large measured superconducting gap $Δ=0.5$meV, and a long coherence length $ξ=200$nm. The graphene-graphene, flat, two dimensional, superconductor-QD interface lowers the capacitance of the quantum dots, thus increasing the charging energy $E_C$ (in contrast to previous devices). As a result we measure a visibility of up to 96% and a splitting efficiency of up to 62%. Finally, the devices utilize graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition allowing for a standardized device design with potential for increased complexity.

Extended-soft-core Baryon-Baryon ESC08 model III. S=-2 Hyperon-hyperon/nucleon Interaction

This paper presents the Extended-Soft-Core (ESC) potentials ESC08c for baryon-baryon channels with total strangeness S=-2. The potential models for S=-2 are based on SU(3) extensions of ESC potential models for the S=0 and S=-1 sectors, which are fitted to experimental data. Flavor SU(3)-symmetry is broken only kinematically by the masses of the baryons and the mesons. For the S=-2 channels no experimental scattering data exist, and also the information from hypernuclei is rather limited. Nevertheless, in the fit to the S=0 and S=-1 sectors information from the so called NAGARA event and the $Ξ$-well-depth has been used as constraints to determine the free parameters in the simultaneous fit of the $NN \oplus YN \oplus YY$ data. Therefore, the potentials for the S=-2 sector are determined mainly by the NN-, YN-data, and SU(3)-symmetry.Various properties of the potentials are illustrated by giving results for scattering lengths, effective ranges, bound states, elastic and inelastic phase parameters, and total cross sections. Notably is the prediction of a bound state D$^*$ in the $ΞN(^3S_1,I=1)$-channel with a binding energy $B_E=1.56$ MeV. This state is deuteron-like, i.e. a member of the $\{10^*\}$-decuplet. As for the normal deuteron $D= pn(^3S_1-^3D_1)$ the strong tensor force is responsible for this state. The features of $Ξ$ hypernuclei predicted by ESC08c are studied on the basis of the G-matrix approch. The well-depth $U_Ξ= -7.0$ MeV, and the $Ξ-ΛΛ$ conversion width is $Γ_Ξ^c= 4.5$ MeV.

Observation of non-Hermitian degeneracies in a chaotic exciton-polariton billiard

Exciton-polaritons are hybrid light-matter quasiparticles formed by strongly interacting photons and excitons (electron-hole pairs) in semiconductor microcavities. They have emerged as a robust solid-state platform for next-generation optoelectronic applications as well as fundamental studies of quantum many-body physics. Importantly, exciton-polaritons are a profoundly open (i.e., non-Hermitian) quantum system: it requires constant pumping of energy and continuously decays releasing coherent radiation. Thus, the exciton-polaritons always exist in a balanced potential landscape of gain and loss. However, the inherent non-Hermitian nature of this potential has so far been largely ignored in exciton-polariton physics. Here we demonstrate that non-Hermiticity dramatically modifies the structure of modes and spectral degeneracies in exciton-polariton systems, and, therefore, will affect their quantum transport, localisation, and dynamical properties. Using a spatially-structured optical pump, we create a chaotic exciton-polariton billiard. Eigenmodes of this billiard exhibit multiple non-Hermitian spectral degeneracies -- exceptional points. These are known to cause remarkable wave phenomena, such as unidirectional transport, anomalous lasing/absorption, and chiral modes. By varying parameters of the billiard, we observe crossing and anti-crossing of energy levels and reveal the nontrivial topological modal structure exclusive to non-Hermitian systems. We also observe the mode switching and topological Berry phase for a parameter loop encircling the exceptional point. Our findings pave the way for studies of non-Hermitian quantum dynamics of exciton-polaritons, which can lead to novel functionalities of polariton-based devices.

Extended-soft-core Baryon-Baryon Model Esc08 II. Hyperon-Nucleon Interactions

The YN results are presented from a new version of the Extended-soft-core (ESC) potential model for Baryon-baryon (BB) scattering. The potentials consist of local- and non-local-potentials due to (i) One-boson-exchange (OBE), (ii) Pomeron and Odderon exchanges, (iii) Two pseudoscalar-exchange (PS-PS), and (iv) Meson-Pair-exchange (MPE). The OBE- and MPE-vertices are regulated by gaussian form factors, producing moderate size potentials in the origin. In addition to the mentioned ingredients of the ESC-model, also the possible short range repulsion due to the quark Pauli-principle in the BB-channels is included in the analysis. The NN, YN, and the S=-2 YY scattering is treated in a unified way using flavor SU(3) symmetry. With the ESC08-model a simultaneous fit is performed for the combined NN and YN data, using single sets of parameters. The achievement is a fit with (i) $χ^2/NN_{data}= 1.081$, and (ii) $χ^2/YN_{data}=1.08$.

Medium effect in high-density region probed by nucleus-nucleus elastic scattering

We investigate the sensitivity of the medium effect in the high-density region on the nucleus-nucleus elastic scattering in the framework of the double-folding (DF) model with the complex $G$-matrix interaction. The medium effect including three-body-force (TBF) effect is investigated with two methods. In the both methods, the medium effect is clearly seen on the potential and the elastic cross section. Finally, we make clear the crucial role of the TBF effect up to $k_F =$ 1.6 fm$^{-1}$ in the nucleus-nucleus elastic scattering.

Extended-soft-core Baryon-Baryon Model ESC08 I. Nucleon-Nucleon Scattering

The Nijmegen extended-sft-core ESC08c model for the baryon-baryon (BB) interactions of the SU(3) flavor-octet of baryons ($N, Λ, Σ$, and $Ξ$) is presented. In this first of a series of papers, the NN results are reported in detail. In the spirit of the Yukawa-approach to the nuclear force problem, the interactions are studied from the meson-exchange picture viewpoint, using generalized soft-core Yukawa-functions. These interactions are supplemented with (i) multiple-gluon-exchange, and (ii) structural effects due to the quark-core of the baryons. The extended-soft-core (ESC) meson-exchange interactions consist of local- and non-local-potentials due to ((i) One-boson-exchanges (OBE, which are the members of nonets of pseudoscalar , vector, scalar, and axial-vector mesons, (ii) diffractive (i.e. multiple-gluon) exchanges, (iii) two pseudoscalar exchange (PS-PS), and (iv) meson-pair-exchange (MPE). The OBE- and MPE-vertices are regulated by gaussian form factors producing potentials with a soft behavior near the origin. The assignment of the cut-off masses for the BBM-vertices is dependent on the SU(3)-classification of the exchanged mesons for OBE, and a similar scheme for MPE. The simultaneous fit of the ESC-models to the NN- and YN-scattering data achieved excellent results for the NN, YN, and favorable properties for the $ΛΛ$ and $ΞN$ systems. In the case of ESC08c, the version of this paper, the results are: (i) For the selected 4313 pp and np scattering data ($ 0 \leq T_{lab} \leq 350$ MeV), the model achieved $χ^2/N_{data} = 1.08$. (ii) The deuteron binding energy and all NN low energy parameters are fitted very nicely. (iii) The YN-data are described also very well with $χ^/N_{data} = 1.09$. (iv) The model predicts a bound $ΞN(^3S_1,I=1)$ states with binding energy 1.56 MeV.

Hyperon mixing and universal many-body repulsion in neutron stars

A multi-pomeron exchange potential (MPP) is proposed as a model for the universal many-body repulsion in baryonic systems on the basis of the Extended Soft Core (ESC) bryon-baryon interaction. The strength of MPP is determined by analyzing the nucleus-nucleus scattering with the G-matrix folding model. The interaction in $ΛN$ channels is shown to reproduce well the experimental $Λ$ binding energies. The equation of state (EoS) in neutron matter with hyperon mixing is obtained including the MPP contribution, and mass-radius relations of neutron stars are derived. It is shown that the maximum mass can be larger than the observed one $2M_{\odot}$ even in the case of including hyperon mixing on the basis of model-parameters determined by terrestrial experiments.

Search for $^6_Λ$H hypernucleus by the $^6$Li$(π^-,K^+)$ reaction at $p_{π^-}$ = 1.2 GeV/$c$

We have carried out an experiment to search for a neutron-rich hypernucleus, $^6_Λ$H, by the $^6$Li($π^-,K^+$) reaction at $p_{π^-}$ =1.2 GeV/$c$. The obtained missing mass spectrum with an estimated energy resolution of 3.2 MeV (FWHM) showed no peak structure corresponding to the $^6_Λ$H hypernucleus neither below nor above the $^4_Λ$H$+2n$ particle decay threshold. An upper limit of the production cross section for the bound $^6_Λ$H hypernucleus was estimated to be 1.2 nb/sr at 90% confidence level.

Multi-pomeron repulsion and the Neutron-star mass

A multi-pomeron exchange potential (MPP) is proposed as a model for the three-body repulsion indicated in neutron-star matter, which works universally among three- and four-baryons. Its strength is determined by analyzing the nucleus-nucleus scattering with the G-matrix folding model. The EoS in neutron matter is obtained including the MPP contribution. The neutron-star mass is calculated by solving the TOV equation. The maximum mass is obtained to be larger than the observed one $1.97 M_{solar}$ on the basis of the experimental data.

Probe of the Solar Magnetic Field Using the "Cosmic-Ray Shadow" of the Sun

We report on a clear solar-cycle variation of the Sun's shadow in the 10 TeV cosmic-ray flux observed by the Tibet air shower array during a full solar cycle from 1996 to 2009. In order to clarify the physical implications of the observed solar cycle variation, we develop numerical simulations of the Sun's shadow, using the Potential Field Source Surface (PFSS) model and the Current Sheet Source Surface (CSSS) model for the coronal magnetic field. We find that the intensity deficit in the simulated Sun's shadow is very sensitive to the coronal magnetic field structure, and the observed variation of the Sun's shadow is better reproduced by the CSSS model. This is the first successful attempt to evaluate the coronal magnetic field models by using the Sun's shadow observed in the TeV cosmic-ray flux.

Four-body structure of neutron-rich hypernucleus $^6_Λ$H

The structure of heavy hyperhydrogen $^6_Λ$H is studied within the framework of a $tnnΛ$ four-body cluster model. Interactions among the constituent subunits are determined so as to reproduce reasonably well the observed low-energy properties of the $tn, tΛ$ and $tnn$ subsystems. As long as we reproduce the energy and width of $^5$H within the error bar, the ground state of $^6_Λ$H is obtained as a resonant state.

A Monte Carlo study to measure the energy spectra of the primary cosmic-ray components at the knee using a new Tibet AS core detector array

A new hybrid experiment has been started by ASγ experiment at Tibet, China, since August 2011, which consists of a low threshold burst-detector-grid (YAC-II, Yangbajing Air shower Core array), the Tibet air-shower array (Tibet-III) and a large underground water Cherenkov muon detector (MD). In this paper, the capability of the measurement of the chemical components (proton, helium and iron) with use of the (Tibet-III+YAC-II) is investigated by means of an extensive Monte Carlo simulation in which the secondary particles are propagated through the (Tibet-III+YAC-II) array and an artificial neural network (ANN) method is applied for the primary mass separation. Our simulation shows that the new installation is powerful to study the chemical compositions, in particular, to obtain the primary energy spectrum of the major component at the knee.

Beta-delayed neutron and gamma-ray spectroscopy of 17C utilizing spin-polarized 17B

Excited states in 17C were investigated through the measurement of beta?-delayed neutrons and gamma rays emitted in the ? decay of 17B. In the measurement, three negative-parity states and two inconclusive states, were identified in 17C above the neutron threshold energy, and seven gamma-lines were identified in a beta?-delayed multiple neutron emission of the 17B ? decay. From these transitions, the beta?-decay scheme of 17B was determined. In the present work, the fibeta-NMR technique is combined with the ?-delayed particle measurements using a fragmentation-induced spin-polarized 17B beam. This new scheme allows us to determine the spin parity of beta?-decay feeding excited states based on the difference in the discrete fibeta-decay asymmetry parameters, provided the states are connected through the Gamow-Teller transition. In this work, 1/2-, 3/2-, and (5/2-) are assigned to the observed states at Ex = 2.71(2), 3.93(2), and 4.05(2) MeV in 17C, respectively.

Vortex-antivortex pair dynamics in an exciton-polariton condensate

The study of superfluid and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phases in exciton-polaritons requires an understanding of vortex dynamics in a dissipative unconfined condensate. In this article we study the motion of dynamic vortex-antivortex pairs and show that vortex pair stability defined as ordered motion as opposed to rapid separation or recombination is the result of balance between dissipative velocities in the condensate and interaction with thermal polaritons. The addition of a trapping potential is further shown to considerably enhance the lifetime of a single vortex pair in this system. These investigations have important consequences for interpretation of recent results and future investigations of two-dimensional superfluid phases in polariton condensates.

Very strong coupling in GaAs based optical microcavities

We show that when following a simple cavity design metric, a quantum well exciton-microcavity photon coupling constant can be larger than the exciton binding energy in GaAs based optical microcavities. Such a very strong coupling significantly reduces the relative electron-hole motion and makes the polaritons robust against phonon collisions. The corresponding polariton dissociation and saturation boundaries on the phase diagram are much improved, and our calculations suggest the possibility of constructing a room temperature, high power exciton-polariton laser without resorting to wide bandgap semiconductors.

Global optical potential for nucleus-nucleus systems from 50 MeV/u to 400 MeV/u

We present a new global optical potential (GOP) for nucleus-nucleus systems, including neutron-rich and proton-rich isotopes, in the energy range of $50 \sim 400$ MeV/u. The GOP is derived from the microscopic folding model with the complex $G$-matrix interaction CEG07 and the global density presented by S{\~ a}o Paulo group. The folding model well accounts for realistic complex optical potentials of nucleus-nucleus systems and reproduces the existing elastic scattering data for stable heavy-ion projectiles at incident energies above 50 MeV/u. We then calculate the folding-model potentials (FMPs) for projectiles of even-even isotopes, $^{8-22}$C, $^{12-24}$O, $^{16-38}$Ne, $^{20-40}$Mg, $^{22-48}$Si, $^{26-52}$S, $^{30-62}$Ar, and $^{34-70}$Ca, scattered by stable target nuclei of $^{12}$C, $^{16}$O, $^{28}$Si, $^{40}$Ca $^{58}$Ni, $^{90}$Zr, $^{120}$Sn, and $^{208}$Pb at the incident energy of 50, 60, 70, 80, 100, 120, 140, 160, 180, 200, 250, 300, 350, and 400 MeV/u. The calculated FMP is represented, with a sufficient accuracy, by a linear combination of 10-range Gaussian functions. The expansion coefficients depend on the incident energy, the projectile and target mass numbers and the projectile atomic number, while the range parameters are taken to depend only on the projectile and target mass numbers. The adequate mass region of the present GOP by the global density is inspected in comparison with FMP by realistic density. The full set of the range parameters and the coefficients for all the projectile-target combinations at each incident energy are provided on a permanent open-access website together with a Fortran program for calculating the microscopic-basis GOP (MGOP) for a desired projectile nucleus by the spline interpolation over the incident energy and the target mass number.

AKARI-CAS --- Online Service for AKARI All-Sky Catalogues

The AKARI All-Sky Catalogues are an important infrared astronomical database for next-generation astronomy that take over the IRAS catalog. We have developed an online service, AKARI Catalogue Archive Server (AKARI-CAS), for astronomers. The service includes useful and attractive search tools and visual tools. One of the new features of AKARI-CAS is cached SIMBAD/NED entries, which can match AKARI catalogs with other catalogs stored in SIMBAD or NED. To allow advanced queries to the databases, direct input of SQL is also supported. In those queries, fast dynamic cross-identification between registered catalogs is a remarkable feature. In addition, multiwavelength quick-look images are displayed in the visualization tools, which will increase the value of the service. In the construction of our service, we considered a wide variety of astronomers' requirements. As a result of our discussion, we concluded that supporting users' SQL submissions is the best solution for the requirements. Therefore, we implemented an RDBMS layer so that it covered important facilities including the whole processing of tables. We found that PostgreSQL is the best open-source RDBMS products for such purpose, and we wrote codes for both simple and advanced searches into the SQL stored functions. To implement such stored functions for fast radial search and cross-identification with minimum cost, we applied a simple technique that is not based on dividing celestial sphere such as HTM or HEALPix. In contrast, the Web application layer became compact, and was written in simple procedural PHP codes. In total, our system realizes cost-effective maintenance and enhancements.
