Analyzing power in elastic scattering of 6He from polarized proton target at 71 MeV/nucleon

The vector analyzing power has been measured for the elastic scattering of neutron-rich 6He from polarized protons at 71 MeV/nucleon making use of a newly constructed solid polarized proton target operated in a low magnetic field and at high temperature. Two approaches based on local one-body potentials were applied to investigate the spin-orbit interaction between a proton and a 6He nucleus. An optical model analysis revealed that the spin-orbit potential for 6He is characterized by a shallow and long-ranged shape compared with the global systematics of stable nuclei. A semimicroscopic analysis with a alpha+n+n cluster folding model suggests that the interaction between a proton and the alpha core is essentially important in describing the p+6He elastic scattering. The data are also compared with fully microscopic analyses using non-local optical potentials based on nucleon-nucleon g-matrices.

Repulsive nature of optical potentials for high-energy heavy-ion scattering

The recent works by the present authors predicted that the real part of heavy-ion optical potentials changes its character from attraction to repulsion around the incident energy per nucleon E/A = 200 - 300 MeV on the basis of the complex G-matrix interaction and the double-folding model (DFM) and revealed that the three-body force plays an important role there. In the present paper, we have precisely analyzed the energy dependence of the calculated DFM potentials and its relation to the elastic-scattering angular distributions in detail in the case of the $^{12}$C + $^{12}$C system in the energy range of E/A = 100 - 400 MeV. The tensor force contributes substantially to the energy dependence of the real part of the DFM potentials and plays an important role to lower the attractive-to-repulsive transition energy. The nearside and farside (N/F) decomposition of the elastic-scattering amplitudes clarifies the close relation between the attractive-to-repulsive transition of the potentials and the characteristic evolution of the calculated angular distributions with the increase of the incident energy. Based on the present analysis, we propose experimental measurements of the predicted strong diffraction phenomena of the elastic-scattering angular distribution caused by the N/F interference around the attractive-to-repulsive transition energy together with the reduced diffractions below and above the transition energy.

Photon Antibunching and Magnetospectroscopy of a Single Fluorine Donor in ZnSe

We report on the optical investigation of single electron spins bound to fluorine donor impurities in ZnSe. Measurements of photon antibunching establish the presence of single, isolated optical emitters, and magneto-optical studies are consistent with the presence of an exciton bound to the spin-impurity complex. The isolation of this single donor-bound exciton complex and its potential homogeneity offer promising prospects for a scalable semiconductor qubit with an optical interface.

Analyzing power for the proton elastic scattering from neutron-rich 6He nucleus

Vector analyzing power for the proton-6He elastic scattering at 71 MeV/nucleon has been measured for the first time, with a newly developed polarized proton solid target working at low magnetic field of 0.09 T. The results are found to be incompatible with a t-matrix folding model prediction. Comparisons of the data with g-matrix folding analyses clearly show that the vector analyzing power is sensitive to the nuclear structure model used in the reaction analysis. The alpha-core distribution in 6He is suggested to be a possible key to understand the nuclear structure sensitivity.

Five-body cluster structure of double-$Λ$ hypernucleus $^{11}_{ΛΛ}$Be

Energy levels of the double $Λ$ hypernucleus, $^{11}_{ΛΛ}$Be are calculated within the framework of an $ααn ΛΛ$ five-body model. Interactions between constituent particles are determined so as to reproduce reasonably the observed low-energy properties of the $αα$, $ααn$ nuclei and the existing data for $Λ$-binding energies of the $αΛ$, $ααΛ$, $αn Λ$ and $ααn Λ$ systems. An effective $ΛΛ$ interaction is constructed so as to reproduce, within the $αΛΛ$ three-body model, the $B_{ΛΛ}$ of $^6_{ΛΛ}$He, which was extracted from the emulsion experiment, the NAGARA event. With no adjustable parameters for the $ααn ΛΛ$ system, $B_{ΛΛ}$ of the ground and bound excited states of $^{11}_{ΛΛ}$Be are calculated with the Gaussian Expansion Method. The Hida event, recently observed at KEK-E373 experiment, is interpreted as an observation of the ground state of the $^{11}_{ΛΛ}$Be.

Quantum Hall Charge Sensor for Single-Donor Nuclear Spin Detection in Silicon

We propose a novel optical and electrical hybrid scheme for the measurement of nuclear spin qubits in silicon. By combining the environmental insensitivity of the integer quantum Hall effect with the optically distinguishable hyperfine states of phosphorus impurities in silicon, our system can simultaneously offer nuclear spin measurement and robustness against environmental defects. 31P donor spins in isotopically purified 28Si are often discussed as very promising quantum memory qubits due to their extremely long decoherence times, and our proposed device offers an effective implementation for such a quantum memory system.

On Temporal Variations of the Multi-TeV Cosmic Ray Anisotropy using the Tibet III Air Shower Array

We analyze the large-scale two-dimensional sidereal anisotropy of multi-TeV cosmic rays by Tibet Air Shower Array, with the data taken from 1999 November to 2008 December. To explore temporal variations of the anisotropy, the data set is divided into nine intervals, each in a time span of about one year. The sidereal anisotropy of magnitude about 0.1% appears fairly stable from year to year over the entire observation period of nine years. This indicates that the anisotropy of TeV Galactic cosmic rays remains insensitive to solar activities since the observation period covers more than a half of the 23rd solar cycle.

Observation of TeV Gamma Rays from the Fermi Bright Galactic Sources with the Tibet Air Shower Array

Using the Tibet-III air shower array, we search for TeV gamma-rays from 27 potential Galactic sources in the early list of bright sources obtained by the Fermi Large Area Telescope at energies above 100 MeV. Among them, we observe 7 sources instead of the expected 0.61 sources at a significance of 2 sigma or more excess. The chance probability from Poisson statistics would be estimated to be 3.8 x 10^-6. If the excess distribution observed by the Tibet-III array has a density gradient toward the Galactic plane, the expected number of sources may be enhanced in chance association. Then, the chance probability rises slightly, to 1.2 x 10^-5, based on a simple Monte Carlo simulation. These low chance probabilities clearly show that the Fermi bright Galactic sources have statistically significant correlations with TeV gamma-ray excesses. We also find that all 7 sources are associated with pulsars, and 6 of them are coincident with sources detected by the Milagro experiment at a significance of 3 sigma or more at the representative energy of 35 TeV. The significance maps observed by the Tibet-III air shower array around the Fermi sources, which are coincident with the Milagro >=3sigma sources, are consistent with the Milagro observations. This is the first result of the northern sky survey of the Fermi bright Galactic sources in the TeV region.

Structure of A=7 iso-triplet $Λ$ hypernuclei studied with he four-body model

The structure of the T=1 iso-triplet hypernuclei, $^7_Λ$He, $^7_Λ$Li and $^7_Λ$Be within the framework of an $α+Λ+N+N$ four-body cluster model is studied. Interactions between the constituent subunits are determined so as to reproduce reasonably well the observed low-energy properties of the $αN$, $αΛ$, $αNN$ and $αΛN$ subsystems. Furthermore, the two-body $ΛN$ interaction is adjusted so as to reproduce the $0^+$-$1^+$ splitting of $^4_Λ$H. Also a phenomenological $ΛN$ charge symmetry breaking(CSB) interaction is introduced. The $Λ$ binding energy of the ground state in $^7_Λ$He is predicted to be 5.16(5.36) MeV with(without) the CSB interaction. The calculated energy splittings of the $3/2^+$-$5/2^+$ states in $^7_Λ$He and $^7_Λ$Li are around 0.1 MeV. We point out that there is a three-layer structure of the matter distribution, $α$ particle, $Λ$ skin, proton or neutron halo, in the $^7_Λ{\rm He}(J=5/2^+)$, $^7_Λ{\rm Li}(J=5/2^+)$ and $^7_Λ{\rm Be}(J=1/2^+)$ states.

A simple, robust, and scalable quantum logic gate with quantum dot cavity QED systems

We present a method to enact a deterministic, measurement-free, optically generated controlled-phase gate on two qubits defined by single electrons trapped in large-area quantum dots in a planar microcavity. This method is robust to optical quantum dot inhomogeneity, requires only a modest-$Q$ planar cavity, employs only a single laser pulse, and allows the integration of many entangled qubits on one semiconductor chip. We present the gate in the contexts of both adiabatic evolution and geometric phases, and calculate the degradation of performance in the presence of both spontaneous emission and cavity loss.

Large-scale sidereal anisotropy of multi-TeV galactic cosmic rays and the heliosphere

We develop a model anisotropy best-fitting to the two-dimensional sky-map of multi-TeV galactic cosmic ray (GCR) intensity observed with the Tibet III air shower (AS) array. By incorporating a pair of intensity excesses in the hydrogen deflection plane (HDP) suggested by Gurnett et al., together with the uni-directional and bi-directional flows for reproducing the observed global feature, this model successfully reproduces the observed sky-map including the "skewed" feature of the excess intensity from the heliotail direction, whose physical origin has long remained unknown. These additional excesses are modeled by a pair of the northern and southern Gaussian distributions, each placed ~50 degree away from the heliotail direction. The amplitude of the southern excess is as large as ~0.2 %, more than twice the amplitude of the northern excess. This implies that the Tibet AS experiment discovered for the first time a clear evidence of the significant modulation of GCR intensity in the heliotail and the asymmetric heliosphere.

Linearized SQUID Array (LISA) for High Bandwidth Frequency-Domain Readout Multiplexing

We have designed and demonstrated a Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) array linearized with cryogenic feedback. To achieve the necessary loop gain a 300 element series array SQUID is constructed from three monolithic 100-element series arrays. A feedback resistor completes the loop from the SQUID output to the input coil. The short feedback path of this Linearized SQUID Array (LISA) allows for a substantially larger flux-locked loop bandwidth as compared to a SQUID flux-locked loop that includes a room temperature amplifier. The bandwidth, linearity, noise performance, and dynamic range of the LISA are sufficient for its use in our target application: the multiplexed readout of transition-edge sensor bolometers.

Megabits secure key rate quantum key distribution

Quantum cryptography (QC) can provide unconditional secure communication between two authorized parties based on the basic principles of quantum mechanics. However, imperfect practical conditions limit its transmission distance and communication speed. Here we implemented the differential phase shift (DPS) quantum key distribution (QKD) with up-conversion assisted hybrid photon detector (HPD) and achieved 1.3 M bits per second secure key rate over a 10-km fiber, which is tolerant against the photon number splitting (PNS) attack, general collective attacks on individual photons, and any other known sequential unambiguous state discrimination (USD) attacks.

Lasing of donor-bound excitons in ZnSe microdisks

Excitons bound to flourine atoms in ZnSe have the potential for several quantum optical applications. Examples include optically accessible quantum memories for quantum information processing and lasing without inversion. These applications require the bound-exciton transitions to be coupled to cavities with high cooperativity factors, which results in the experimental observation of low-threshold lasing. We report such lasing from fluorine-doped ZnSe quantum wells in 3 and 6 micron microdisk cavities. Photoluminescence and selective photoluminescence spectroscopy confirm that the lasing is due to bound-exciton transitions.

New estimation of the spectral index of high-energy cosmic rays as determined by the Compton-Getting anisotropy

The amplitude of the Compton-Getting (CG) anisotropy contains the power-law index of the cosmic-ray energy spectrum. Based on this relation and using the Tibet air-shower array data, we measure the cosmic-ray spectral index to be $-3.03 \pm 0.55_{stat} \pm < 0.62_{syst}$ between 6 TeV and 40 TeV, consistent with $-$2.7 from direct energy spectrum measurements. Potentially, this CG anisotropy analysis can be utilized to confirm the astrophysical origin of the ``knee'' against models for non-standard hadronic interactions in the atmosphere.

Future plan for observation of cosmic gamma rays in the 100 TeV energy region with the Tibet air shower array : physics goal and overview

The Tibet air shower array, which has an effective area of 37,000 square meters and is located at 4300 m in altitude, has been observing air showers induced by cosmic rays with energies above a few TeV. We are planning to add a large muon detector array to it for the purpose of increasing its sensitivity to cosmic gamma rays in the 100 TeV (10 - 1000 TeV) energy region by discriminating them from cosmic-ray hadrons. We report on the possibility of detection of gamma rays in the 100 TeV energy region in our field of view, based on the improved sensitivity of our air shower array deduced from the full Monte Carlo simulation.
