The $(4,p)$-arithmetic hyperbolic lattices, $p\geq 2$, in three dimensions

We identify the finitely many arithmetic lattices $Γ$ in the orientation preserving isometry group of hyperbolic $3$-space $\mathbb{H}^3$ generated by an element of order $4$ and and element of order $p\geq 2$. Thus $Γ$ has a presentation of the form $Γ\cong\langle f,g: f^4=g^p=w(f,g)=\cdots=1 \rangle$ We find that necessarily $p\in \{2,3,4,5,6,\infty\}$, where $p=\infty$ denotes that $g$ is a parabolic element, the total degree of the invariant trace field $kΓ=\mathbb{Q}(\{\tr^2(h):h\inΓ\})$ is at most $4$, and each orbifold is either a two bridge link of slope $r/s$ surgered with $(4,0)$, $(p,0)$ Dehn surgery (possibly a two bridge knot if $p=4$) or a Heckoid group with slope $r/s$ and $w(f,g)=(w_{r/s})^r$ with $r\in \{1,2,3,4\}$. We give a discrete and faithful representation in $PSL(2,\mathbb{C})$ for each group and identify the associated number theoretic data.

Non-trivial surface states of samarium hexaboride at the (111) surface

The peculiar metallic electronic states observed in the Kondo insulator, samarium hexaboride (SmB$_6$), has stimulated considerable attention among those studying non-trivial electronic phenomena. However, experimental studies of these states have led to controversial conclusions mainly to the difficulty and inhomogeneity of the SmB$_6$ crystal surface. Here, we show the detailed electronic structure of SmB$_6$ with angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy measurements of the three-fold (111) surface where only two inequivalent time-reversal-invariant momenta (TRIM) exist. We observe the metallic two-dimensional state was dispersed across the bulk Kondo gap. Its helical in-plane spin polarisation around the surface TRIM suggests that SmB$_6$ is topologically non-trivial, according to the topological classification theory for weakly correlated systems. Based on these results, we propose a simple picture of the controversial topological classification of SmB$_6$.

Temperature-driven modification of surface electronic structure on bismuth, a topological border material

Single crystalline bismuth (Bi) is known to have a peculiar electronic structure which is very close to the topological phase transition. The modification of the surface states of Bi depending on the temperature are revealed by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). At low temperature, the upper branch of the surface state merged to the projected bulk conduction bands around the $\bar{M}$ point of the surface Brillouin zone (SBZ). In contrast, the same branch merged to the projected bulk valence bands at high temperature (400 K). Such behavior could be interpreted as a topological phase transition driven by the temperature, which might be applicable for future spin-thermoelectric devices. We discuss the possible mechanisms to cause such transition, such as the thermal lattice distortion and electron-phonon coupling.

Giant Rashba splitting of quasi-1D surface states on Bi/InAs(110)-(2$\times$1)

Electronic states on the Bi/InAs(110)-(2$\times$1) surface and its spin-polarized structure are revealed by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), spin-resolved ARPES, and density-functional-theory calculation. The surface state showed quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) dispersion and a nearly metallic character; the top of the hole-like surface band is just below the Fermi level. The size of the Rashba parameter ($α_{\rm R}$) reached quite a large value ($\sim$5.5 eVÅ). The present result would provide a fertile playground for further studies of the exotic electronic phenomena in 1D or Q1D systems with the spin-split electronic states as well as for advanced spintronic devices.

Identifying the electronic character and role of the Mn states in the valence band of (Ga,Mn)As

We report high-resolution hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy results on (Ga,Mn)As films as a function of Mn doping. Supported by theoretical calculations we identify, over the entire 1% to 13% Mn doping range, the electronic character of the states near the top of the valence band. Magnetization and temperature dependent core-level photoemission spectra reveal how the delocalized character of the Mn states enables the bulk ferromagnetic properties of (Ga,Mn)As.

Observation of transverse polarization asymmetries of charged pion pairs in e+e- annihilation near sqrt s=10.58 GeV

The interference fragmentation function translates the fragmentation of a quark with a transverse projection of the spin into an azimuthal asymmetry of two final-state hadrons. In e+e- annihilation the product of two interference fragmentation functions is measured. We report nonzero asymmetries for pairs of charge-ordered pi+pi- pairs, which indicate a significant interference fragmentation function in this channel. The results are obtained from a 672 fb-1 data sample that contains 711 \times 106 pi+pi- pairs and was collected at and near the ?(4S) resonance, with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider.

Microscopic model for the semiconductor-to-ferromagnetic-metal transition in FeSi$_{1-x}$Ge$_{x}$ Alloys

The simplified bandstructure introduced by Mazurenko et al to model FeSi is used to analyze the singlet semiconductor to ferromagnetic metal transition in the isoelectronic isostructural alloys, FeSi$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$. The complex bandstructure of the alloy is replaced by an alternating chain of doubly and singly degenerate atoms to represent Fe and Si/Ge respectively. The former(latter) form narrow(broad) bands with a substantial hybridization between them. A substantial onsite repulsion including a Hund's rule coupling is introduced on the Fe sites. The mean field phase diagram contains a first order phase transition from the singlet semiconductor to a ferromagnetic metal with increasing temperature and interaction strength similar to the alloys. The analysis also reproduces the rapid rise of the spin susceptibility in the semiconductor with a crossover to a Curie-Weiss form at higher temperatures. Good agreement is found at zero temperature between the mean field and accurate DMRG calculations.

Mott insulating state in a quarter-filled two-orbital Hubbard chain with different bandwidths

We investigate the ground-state properties of the one-dimensional two-band Hubbard model with different bandwidths. The density-matrix renormalization group method is applied to calculate the averaged electron occupancies $n$ as a function of the chemical potential $μ$. Both at quarter and half fillings, "charge plateaux" appear in the $n$-$μ$ plot, where $dμ/dn$ diverges and the Mott insulating states are realized. To see how the orbital polarization in the one-quarter charge plateau develops, we apply the second-order perturbation theory from the strong-coupling limit at quarter filling. The resultant Kugel-Khomskii spin-orbital model includes a $magnetic$ field coupled to orbital pseudo-spins. This field originates from the discrepancy between the two bandwidths and leads to a finite orbital pseudo-spin magnetization.

Direct Observation of Site-specific Valence Electronic Structure at Interface: SiO2/Si Interface

Atom specific valence electronic structures at interface are elucidated successfully using soft x-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy. In order to demonstrate the versatility of this method, we investigated SiO2/Si interface as a prototype and directly observed valence electronic states projected at the particular atoms of the SiO2/Si interface; local electronic structure strongly depends on the chemical states of each atom. In addition we compared the experimental results with first-principle calculations, which quantitatively revealed the interfacial properties in atomic-scale.

Strong correlation effects of the Re 5$d$ electrons on the metal-insulator transition in Ca$_2$FeReO$_6$

We have investigated the electronic structure of polycrystalline Ca$_2$FeReO$_6$ using photoemission spectroscopy and band-structure calculations within the local-density approximation+$U$ (LDA+$U$) scheme. In valence-band photoemission spectra, a double-peak structure which is characteristic of the metallic double perovskite series has been observed near the Fermi level ($E_{\rm F}$), although it is less distinct compared to the Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$ case. The leading near-$E_{\rm F}$ structure has a very weak spectral weight at $E_{\rm F}$ above the metal-insulator transition (MIT) temperature $T_{\rm MI}$ of $\sim$140 K, and it loses the $E_{\rm F}$ weight below $T_{\rm MI}$, forming a small energy gap. To reproduce this small energy gap in the calculation, we require a very large effective $U$ ($U_{\rm eff}$) for Re (4 eV) in addition to a relatively large $U_{\rm eff}$ for Fe (4 eV). Although the most of the experimental features can be interpreted with the help of the band theory, the overall agreement between the theory and the experiment was not satisfactory. We demonstrate that the effective transfer integral between Fe and Re is actually smaller than that between Fe and Mo in Ca$_2$FeMoO$_6$, which can explain both MIT and very high ferrimagnetic transition temperature.

Performance of lattice QCD programs on CP-PACS

The CP-PACS is a massively parallel MIMD computer with the theoretical peak speed of 614 GFLOPS which has been developed for computational physics applications at the University of Tsukuba, Japan. We report on the performance of the CP-PACS computer measured during recent production runs using our Quantum Chromodynamics code for the simulation of quarks and gluons in particle physics. With the full 2048 processing nodes, our code shows a sustained speed of 237.5 GFLOPS for the heat-bath update of gluon variables, 264.6 GFLOPS for the over-relaxation update, and 325.3 GFLOPS for quark matrix inversion with an even-odd preconditioned minimal residual algorithm.
