Exploring the convective core of the hybrid $δ$ Scuti-$γ$ Doradus star CoRoT 100866999 with asteroseismology

We computed a grid of theoretical models to fit the $δ$ Scuti frequencies of CoRoT 100866999 detected earlier from the CoRoT timeserials. The pulsating primary star is determined to be a main sequence star with a rotation period of $4.1^{+0.6}_{-0.5}$ days, rotating slower than the orbital motion. The fundamental parameters of the primary star are determined to be $M$ = $1.71^{+0.13}_{-0.04}$ $M_{\odot}$, $Z=0.012^{+0.004}_{-0.000}$, $f_{\rm ov}$ = $0.02^{+0.00}_{-0.02}$, $T_{\rm eff}$ = $8024^{+249}_{-297}$ K, $L$ = $11.898^{+2.156}_{-1.847}$ $L_{\odot}$, $\log g$ = $4.166^{+0.013}_{-0.002}$, $R$ = $1.787^{+0.040}_{-0.016}$ $R_{\odot}$, and $X_{\rm c}$ = 0.488$^{+0.011}_{-0.020}$, matching well those obtained from the eclipsing light curve analysis. Based on the model fittings, $p_1$ and $p_5$ are suggested to be two dipole modes, and $p_3$, $p_4$, $p_6$, and $p_7$ to be four quadrupole modes. In particular, $p_4$ and $p_7$ are identified as two components of one quintuplet. Based on the best-fitting model, we find that $p_1$ is a g mode and the other nonradial modes have pronounced mixed characters, which give strong constraints on the convective core. Finally, the relative size of the convective core of CoRoT 100866999 is determined to $R_{\rm conv}/R$ = $0.0931^{+0.0003}_{-0.0013}$.

Partial Wave Mixing in Hamiltonian Effective Field Theory

Within general partial-wave mixing, a method for reducing the high dimension of the finite-volume Hamiltonian from Hamiltonian effective field theory is proposed. This method provides a new viewpoint on partial-wave mixing, and a set of matrices that can reflect the degree of partial-wave mixing. An example of isospin-2 $ππ$ scattering is used to examine the consistency between this method and Lüscher's method.

Tuning Non-Gilbert-type damping in FeGa films on MgO(001) via oblique deposition

The ability to tailor the damping factor is essential for spintronic and spin-torque applications. Here, we report an approach to manipulate the damping factor of FeGa/MgO(001) films by oblique deposition. Owing to the defects at the surface or interface in thin films, two-magnon scattering (TMS) acts as a non-Gilbert damping mechanism in magnetization relaxation. In this work, the contribution of TMS was characterized by in-plane angular dependent ferromagnetic resonance (FMR). It is demonstrated that the intrinsic Gilbert damping is isotropic and invariant, while the extrinsic mechanism related to TMS is anisotropic and can be tuned by oblique deposition. Furthermore, the two and fourfold TMS related to the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (UMA) and magnetocrystalline anisotropy were discussed. Our results open an avenue to manipulate magnetization relaxation in spintronic devices.

Genus theory and Euclidean ideals for real biquadratic fields

In this paper, we use the theory of genus fields to study the Euclidean ideals of certain real biquadratic fields $K.$ Comparing with the previous works, our methods yield a new larger family of real biquadratic fields $K$ having Euclidean ideals; and the conditions for our family seem to be more efficient for the computations. Moreover, the previous approaches mainly focus on the case if $h_K=2$, while the present approach can also deal with the general case when $h_K=2^t (t\geq1)$, where $h_K$ denotes the ideal class number of $K$. In particular, if $h_K\geq 4$, it shows that $H(K)$, the Hilbert class field of $K$, is always non-abelian over $\mathbb{Q}$ for the family of $K$ given in this paper having Euclidean ideals, whereas the previous approaches always requires that $H(K)$ is abelian over $\mathbb{Q}$ explicitly or implicitly. Finally, some open questions have also been listed for further research.

Mixed Supervised Object Detection with Robust Objectness Transfer

In this paper, we consider the problem of leveraging existing fully labeled categories to improve the weakly supervised detection (WSD) of new object categories, which we refer to as mixed supervised detection (MSD). Different from previous MSD methods that directly transfer the pre-trained object detectors from existing categories to new categories, we propose a more reasonable and robust objectness transfer approach for MSD. In our framework, we first learn domain-invariant objectness knowledge from the existing fully labeled categories. The knowledge is modeled based on invariant features that are robust to the distribution discrepancy between the existing categories and new categories; therefore the resulting knowledge would generalize well to new categories and could assist detection models to reject distractors (e.g., object parts) in weakly labeled images of new categories. Under the guidance of learned objectness knowledge, we utilize multiple instance learning (MIL) to model the concepts of both objects and distractors and to further improve the ability of rejecting distractors in weakly labeled images. Our robust objectness transfer approach outperforms the existing MSD methods, and achieves state-of-the-art results on the challenging ILSVRC2013 detection dataset and the PASCAL VOC datasets.

Towards Understanding the Importance of Noise in Training Neural Networks

Numerous empirical evidence has corroborated that the noise plays a crucial rule in effective and efficient training of neural networks. The theory behind, however, is still largely unknown. This paper studies this fundamental problem through training a simple two-layer convolutional neural network model. Although training such a network requires solving a nonconvex optimization problem with a spurious local optimum and a global optimum, we prove that perturbed gradient descent and perturbed mini-batch stochastic gradient algorithms in conjunction with noise annealing is guaranteed to converge to a global optimum in polynomial time with arbitrary initialization. This implies that the noise enables the algorithm to efficiently escape from the spurious local optimum. Numerical experiments are provided to support our theory.

Degree bipartite Ramsey numbers

Let $H\xrightarrow{s} G$ denote that any edge-coloring of $H$ by $s$ colors contains a monochromatic $G$. The degree Ramsey number $r_Δ(G;s)$ is defined to be $\min\{Δ(H):H\xrightarrow{s} G\}$, and the degree bipartite Ramsey number $br_Δ(G;s)$ is defined to be $\min\{Δ(H):H\xrightarrow{s} G\; \mbox{and} \;χ(H)=2\}$. In this note, we show that $r_Δ(K_{m,n};s)$ is linear on $n$ with $m$ fixed. We also determine $br_Δ(G;s)$ where $G$ are trees, including stars and paths, and complete bipartite graphs.

An analogue of Kummer's relation between the ideal class number and the unit index of cyclotomic fields

In this paper, we obtain a formula for the special value of Euler-Dirichlet $L$-function $L_E(s,χ)$ at $s=1$. This leads to another class number formula of $\mathbb{Q}(μ_{m})^{+}$, the maximal real subfield of $m$th cyclotomic field. From this formula, we construct a new type of cyclotomic units in $\mathbb{Q}(μ_{p^{n}})$, which implies a similar Kummer's relation between the ideal class number of $\mathbb{Q}(μ_{p^{n}})^{+}$ and the unit index.

Controllable selective coupling of Dyakonov surface wave at liquid crystal based interface

Highly directional and lossless surface wave has significant potential applications in the two-dimensional photonic circuits and devices. Here we experimentally demonstrate a selective Dyakonov surface wave coupling at the interface between a transparent polycarbonate material and nematic liquid crystal 5CB. By controlling the anisotropy of the nematic liquid crystal with an applied magnetic field, a single ray at a certain incident angle from a diverged incident beam can be selectively coupled into surface wave. The implementation of this property may lead to a new generation of on-chip integrated optics and two-dimensional photonic devices.

Inductive Bias of Gradient Descent based Adversarial Training on Separable Data

Adversarial training is a principled approach for training robust neural networks. Despite of tremendous successes in practice, its theoretical properties still remain largely unexplored. In this paper, we provide new theoretical insights of gradient descent based adversarial training by studying its computational properties, specifically on its inductive bias. We take the binary classification task on linearly separable data as an illustrative example, where the loss asymptotically attains its infimum as the parameter diverges to infinity along certain directions. Specifically, we show that when the adversarial perturbation during training has bounded $\ell_2$-norm, the classifier learned by gradient descent based adversarial training converges in direction to the maximum $\ell_2$-norm margin classifier at the rate of $\tilde{\mathcal{O}}(1/\sqrt{T})$, significantly faster than the rate $\mathcal{O}(1/\log T)$ of training with clean data. In addition, when the adversarial perturbation during training has bounded $\ell_q$-norm for some $q\ge 1$, the resulting classifier converges in direction to a maximum mixed-norm margin classifier, which has a natural interpretation of robustness, as being the maximum $\ell_2$-norm margin classifier under worst-case $\ell_q$-norm perturbation to the data. Our findings provide theoretical backups for adversarial training that it indeed promotes robustness against adversarial perturbation.

High-precision asteroseismology in Slowly Pulsating B star: HD 50230

SPB star HD 50230, in fact a hybrid B-type pulsator, has been observed by CoRoT least 137 days. A nearly equidistant period spacing pattern are found among 8 modes which are extracted from the oscillation spectrum with more than 500 frequencies. However, it is thought to be most likely accidental by Szewczuk et al. (2014). In the present work, we analyze the 8 modes in depth with the $χ^2$-matching method. Based on the best fitting model (model MA), we find that they can be well explained as a sequences of consecutive dipolar $(l,~m)=(1,~0)$. The period discrepancies between observations and the best fitting model are within 100 s except for the outlier which is up to 300 s. Based on the calculated CMMs, we find that, for pure g-mode oscillations, the buoyancy radius $Λ_{0}$ can be precisely measured with the $χ^2$-matching method between observations and calculations. It represents the "Propagation time" of the g-mode from stellar surface to center. It is of $Λ_{0}=245.78\pm0.59~μ$Hz with a precision of 0.24\%. In addition, we also find that HD 50230 is a metal-rich ($Z_{\rm init}=0.034-0.043$) star with a mass of $M=6.15-6.27~{\rm M_{\odot}}$. It is still located on hydrogen-burning phase with central hydrogen $X_{\rm C}=0.298-0.316$ (or $X_{\rm C}=0.306^{+0.010}_{-0.008}$), therefore has a convective core with a radius of $R_{\rm cc}=0.525-0.536~{\rm R_{\odot}}$ (or $R_{\rm cc}=0.531^{+0.005}_{-0.006}~{\rm R_{\odot}}$). In order to well interpret the structure of observed period spacing pattern, the convective core overshooting ($f_{\rm ov}=0.0175-0.0200$) and the extra diffusion mixing ($\log D_{\rm mix}=3.7-3.9$) should be taken into account in theoretical models.

Solar models with convective overshoot, the solar-wind mass loss, and a PMS disk accretion: helioseismic quantities, Li depletion and neutrino fluxes

Helioseismic observations have revealed many properties of the Sun: the depth and the helium abundance of the convection zone, the sound-speed and the density profiles in the solar interior. Those constraints have been used to judge the stellar evolution theory. With the old solar composition (e.g., GS98), the solar standard model is in reasonable agreement with the helioseismic constraints. However, a solar model with revised composition (e.g., AGSS09) with low abundance $Z$ of heavy elements cannot be consistent with those constraints. This is the so-called "solar abundance problem", standing for more than ten years even with the recent upward revised Ne abundance. Many mechanisms have been proposed to mitigate the problem. However, there is still not a low-$Z$ solar model satisfying all helioseismic constraints. In this paper, we report a possible solution to the solar abundance problem. With some extra physical processes that are not included in the standard model, solar models can be significantly improved. Our new solar models with convective overshoot, the solar wind, and an early mass accretion show consistency with helioseismic constraints, the solar Li abundance, and observations of solar neutrino fluxes.

Classical analogy of a cat state using vortex light

Cat states are systems in a superposition of macroscopically distinguishable states; this superposition can be of either classically or quantum distinct state, regardless of the number of particles or modes involved. Here, we constructed an experimental model that simulates an optical cat state by engineering the classical orbital angular momentum of light, referred to here as an analogous cat state (a-CS). In our scheme, the behaviors of the a-CS in position space show many similarities to the quantum version of the optical cat state in phase space, for example, movement, rotation, and interference. Experimentally, the a-CS, which has two spatially localized Gaussian intensity lobes, can be evolved from "kitten" to "cat" by engineering the acquired phase hologram. Additionally, we simulated the "decoherence" of the a-CS influenced by atmospheric turbulence. The a-CS provides a reliable tool for visualizing and studying the behaviors of quantum cat states in phase space.

Multiplexing heralded single-photon in orbital angular momentum space

Heralded single-photon source (HSPS) with competitive single photon purity and indistinguishability has become an essential resource for photonic quantum information processing. Here, for the first time, we proposed a theoretical regime to enhance heralded single-photons generation by multiplexing the degree of the freedom of orbital angular momentum (OAM) of down-converted entangled photon pairs emitted from a nonlinear crystal. Experimentally, a proof-of-principle experiment has been performed through multiplexing three OAM modes. We achieve a 47$\%$ enhancement in single photon rate. A second-order autocorrelation function $g^{(2)}(0)<0.5$ ensures our multiplexed heralded single photons with good single photon purity. We further indicate that an OAM-multiplexed HSPS with high quality can be constructed by generating higher dimensional entangled state and sorting them with high efficiency in OAM space. Our avenue may approach a good HSPS with the deterministic property.

Generating single longitudinal mode entangled photons in telecom band via a submillimeter monolithic cavity

A high-quality, compact, and narrow-bandwidth entangled photon source (EPS) is indispensable for realization of many quantum communication protocols. Usually, a free space cavity containing a nonlinear crystal is used to generate a narrow bandwidth EPS through spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC). One major drawback is that this occupies a large space and requires complex optical and electrical control systems. Here we present a simple and compact method to generate a single-longitudinal-mode time-energy EPS via type II SPDC in a submillimeter Fabry-Perot cavity. We characterize the quality of the EPS by measuring the coincidence to accidental coincidence ratio, the two-photon time cross-correlation function and the two-photon interference fringes. All measured results clearly demonstrate that the developed source is of high quality when compared with EPSs generated using other configurations. We believe this source is very promising for applications in the quantum communication field.
