Polarization of kilonova emission from a black hole-neutron star merger

A multi-messenger, black hole (BH) - neutron star (NS) merger event still remains to be detected. The tidal (dynamical) ejecta from such an event, thought to produce a kinonova, is concentrated in the equatorial plane and occupies only part of the whole azimuthal angle. In addition, recent simulations suggest that the outflow or wind from the post-merger remnant disk, presumably anisotropic, can be a major ejecta component responsible for a kilonova. For any ejecta whose photosphere shape deviates from the spherical symmetry, the electron scattering at the photosphere causes a net polarization in the kilonova light. Recent observational and theoretical polarization studies have been focused to the NS-NS merger kilonova AT2017gfo. We extend those work to the case of a BH-NS merger kilonova. We show that the degree of polarization at the first $\sim 1$ hr can be up to $\sim$ 3\% if a small amount ($10^{-4} M_{\odot}$) of free neutrons have survived in the fastest component of the dynamical ejecta, whose beta-decay causes a precursor in the kilonova light. The polarization degree can be $\sim$ 0.6\% if free neutrons survived in the fastest component of the disk wind. Future polarization detection of a kilonova will constrain the morphology and composition of the dominant ejecta component, therefore help to identify the nature of the merger.

Similarity Grouping-Guided Neural Network Modeling for Maritime Time Series Prediction

Reliable and accurate prediction of time series plays a crucial role in maritime industry, such as economic investment, transportation planning, port planning and design, etc. The dynamic growth of maritime time series has the predominantly complex, nonlinear and non-stationary properties. To guarantee high-quality prediction performance, we propose to first adopt the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and ensemble EMD (EEMD) methods to decompose the original time series into high- and low-frequency components. The low-frequency components can be easily predicted directly through traditional neural network (NN) methods. It is more difficult to predict high-frequency components due to their properties of weak mathematical regularity. To take advantage of the inherent self-similarities within high-frequency components, these components will be divided into several continuous small (overlapping) segments. The grouped segments with high similarities are then selected to form more proper training datasets for traditional NN methods. This regrouping strategy can assist in enhancing the prediction accuracy of high-frequency components. The final prediction result is obtained by integrating the predicted high- and low-frequency components. Our proposed three-step prediction frameworks benefit from the time series decomposition and similar segments grouping. Experiments on both port cargo throughput and vessel traffic flow have illustrated its superior performance in terms of prediction accuracy and robustness.

Redundant edges in Ramsey graphs

For graphs $G$, $F$ and $H$, let $G\rightarrow (F,H)$ signify that any edge coloring of $G$ in red and blue contains a red $F$ or a blue $H$. The Ramsey number $R(F,H)=\min\{r|\; K_r\rightarrow (F,H)\}$. In this note, we consider redundant edges in Ramsey graphs, which are associate with critical Ramsey numbers. For an integer $k\ge 1$, let ${\mathbb G}=\{G_k,G_{k+1},\dots \}$ be a class of graphs with $δ(G_n)\ge 1$. We define the critical Ramsey number $R_{\mathbb G}(F,H)$ with respect to $\mathbb G$ to be $\max\{n|\; K_r\setminus G_n \rightarrow(F,H),\,G_n\in{\mathbb G}\big\}$, where $r=R(F,H)$. We shall determine some $R_{\mathbb G}(F,H)$, where ${\mathbb G}$ consists of stars, matchings and complete graphs, respectively.

A framework for modelling linear surface waves on shear currents in slowly varying waters

We present a theoretical and numerical framework -- which we dub the Direct Integration Method (DIM) -- for simple, efficient and accurate evaluation of surface wave models allowing presence of a current of arbitrary depth dependence, and where bathymetry and ambient currents may vary slowly in horizontal directions. On horizontally constant water depth and shear current the DIM numerically evaluates the dispersion relation of linear surface waves to arbitrary accuracy, and we argue that for this purpose it is superior to two existing numerical procedures: the piecewise-linear approximation and a method due to \textit{Dong \& Kirby} [2012]. The DIM moreover yields the full linearized flow field at little extra cost. We implement the DIM numerically with iterations of standard numerical methods. The wide applicability of the DIM in an oceanographic setting in four aspects is shown. Firstly, we show how the DIM allows practical implementation of the wave action conservation equation recently derived by \textit{Quinn et al.} [2017]. Secondly, we demonstrate how the DIM handles with ease cases where existing methods struggle, i.e.\ velocity profiles $\mathbf{U}(z)$ changing direction with vertical coordinate $z$, and strongly sheared profiles. Thirdly, we use the DIM to calculate and analyse the full linear flow field beneath a 2D ring wave upon a near--surface wind--driven exponential shear current, revealing striking qualitative differences compared to no shear. Finally we demonstrate that the DIM can be a real competitor to analytical dispersion relation approximations such as that of \textit{Kirby \& Chen} [1989] even for wave/ocean modelling.

Asteroseismology of the pre-main-sequence $δ$ Scuti pulsator IP Persei

A grid of theoretical models are computed to fit the 9 oscillation modes of IP Per detected earlier from a multi-site ground-based campaign. Fitting results show that there are two sets of theoretical models that could reproduce the observed frequencies more or less euqally well. In view of other available spectroscopic and photometric measurements, our best fitting stellar parameters for IP Per are $\upsilon_{\rm e} = 91^{+5}_{-3}$ km s$^{-1}$, $Z=0.009^{+0.004}_{-0.001}$, $M = 1.64^{+0.10}_{-0.04}$ $M_{\odot}$, $T_{\rm eff} = 7766^{+348}_{-173}$ K, $\log L/L_{\odot} = 1.125^{+0.094}_{-0.046}$, $\log g = 4.041^{+0.008}_{-0.003}$ dex, $R = 2.022^{+0.042}_{-0.018}$ $R_{\odot}$, $τ_{0} = 8711^{+68}_{-35}$ s, age = $7.39^{+0.76}_{-0.46}$ Myr. Meanwhile, IP Per is found to be a pre-main sequence star where CN cycle has not yet reached the equilibrium state. At present fourteen percent of C12 have been turned into N14. Based on the best-fitting model, $f_{6}$ is identified as a radial mode, $f_{1}$ and $f_{2}$ as two dipole modes, and $f_{3}$, $f_{4}$, $f_{5}$, $f_{7}$, $f_{8}$, and $f_{9}$ as six quadrupole modes.

Coherent manipulation of a three-dimensional maximally entangled state

Maximally entangled photon pairs with a spatial degree of freedom is a potential way for realizing high-capacity quantum computing and communication. However, methods to generate such entangled states with high quality, high brightness, and good controllability are needed. Here, a scheme is experimentally demonstrated that generates spatially maximally entangled photon pairs with an orbital angular momentum degree of freedom via spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a nonlinear crystal. Compared with existing methods using post-selection, the technique can directly modulate the spatial spectrum of down-converted photon pairs by engineering the input pump beam. In addition, the relative phase between spatially entangled photon pairs can be easily manipulated by preparing the relative phase of input pump states.

Gauss sums of some matrix groups over $\Bbb Z/n\Bbb Z$

In this paper, we will explicitly calculate Gauss sums for the general linear groups and the special linear groups over $\Bbb Z_n$, where $\Bbb Z_n=\Bbb Z/n \Bbb Z$ and $n>0$ is an integer. For $r$ being a positive integer, the formulae of Gauss sums for ${\rm GL}_r(\Bbb Z_n)$ can be expressed in terms of classical Gauss sums over $\Bbb Z_n$, while the formulae of Gauss sums for ${\rm SL}_r(\Bbb Z_n)$ can be expressed in terms of hyper-Kloosterman sums over $\Bbb Z_n$. As an application, we count the number of $r\times r$ invertible matrices over $\Bbb Z_n$ with given trace by using the the formulae of Gauss sums for ${\rm GL}_r(\Bbb Z_n)$ and the orthogonality of Ramanujan sums.

Improving Gated Recurrent Unit Based Acoustic Modeling with Batch Normalization and Enlarged Context

The use of future contextual information is typically shown to be helpful for acoustic modeling. Recently, we proposed a RNN model called minimal gated recurrent unit with input projection (mGRUIP), in which a context module namely temporal convolution, is specifically designed to model the future context. This model, mGRUIP with context module (mGRUIP-Ctx), has been shown to be able of utilizing the future context effectively, meanwhile with quite low model latency and computation cost. In this paper, we continue to improve mGRUIP-Ctx with two revisions: applying BN methods and enlarging model context. Experimental results on two Mandarin ASR tasks (8400 hours and 60K hours) show that, the revised mGRUIP-Ctx outperform LSTM with a large margin (11% to 38%). It even performs slightly better than a superior BLSTM on the 8400h task, with 33M less parameters and just 290ms model latency.

Overshooting in the core helium burning stage of a $30M_{\odot}$ star using the $k$-$ω$ model

Overshooting and semiconvection are among the most uncertainties in the evolution of massive stars. Complete mixing over a certain distance beyond the convective boundary (Stothers \& Chin 1985) and an exponentially decaying diffusion outside the convection zone (Herwig 2000) are commonly adopted for the overshoot mixing. Recently, Li (2012, 2017) developed the $k$-$ω$ model, which can be used in both convection zones and overshooting regions. We incorporated it in calculations of $30M_{\odot}$ stellar models. We find that in the main sequence stage, models with the $k$-$ω$ model are almost identical to models with complete mixing in the overshooting region beyond the convective core, and the overshooting in the $k$-$ω$ model is equivalent to an overshooting distance of about $0.15H_P$. In the post main sequence stage, we find that the overshooting below the bottom of the intermediate convection zone beyond the hydrogen-burning shell can significantly restrict the size of the hydrogen-depleted core, and can penetrate effectively into the hydrogen-burning shell. These two effects are crucial for the evolution of the core helium burning stage. During the core helium burning stage, we find that the overshooting model based on the $k$-$ω$ model results in a similar complete mixing region but a much wider partial mixing region than the overshooting model based on Herwig (2000). In particular, the overshooting distance in the core helium burning stage may be significantly smaller than that in the main sequence phase for massive stars.

One-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures

Property by design is one appealing idea in material synthesis but hard to achieve in practice. A recent successful example is the demonstration of van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures,1-3 in which atomic layers are stacked on each other and different ingredients can be combined beyond symmetry and lattice matching. This concept, usually described as a nanoscale Lego blocks, allows to build sophisticated structures layer by layer. However, this concept has been so far limited in two dimensional (2D) materials. Here we show a class of new material where different layers are coaxially (instead of planarly) stacked. As the structure is in one dimensional (1D) form, we name it "1D vdW heterostructures". We demonstrate a 5 nm diameter nanotube consisting of three different materials: an inner conductive carbon nanotube (CNT), a middle insulating hexagonal boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) and an outside semiconducting MoS2 nanotube. As the technique is highly applicable to other materials in the current 2D libraries,4-6 we anticipate our strategy to be a starting point for discovering a class of new semiconducting nanotube materials. A plethora of function-designable 1D heterostructures will appear after the combination of CNTs, BNNTs and semiconducting nanotubes.

Nonlinear frequency conversion and manipulation of vector beams in a Sagnac loop

Vector beams (VBs) are widely investigated for its special intensity and polarization distributions, which is useful for optical micromanipulation, optical micro-fabrication, optical communication, and single molecule imaging. To date, it is still a challenge to realize nonlinear frequency conversion (NFC) and manipulation of such VBs because of the polarization sensitivity in most of nonlinear processes. Here, we report an experimental realization of NFC and manipulation of VBs which can be used to expand the available frequency band. The main idea of our scheme is to introduce a Sagnac loop to solve the polarization dependence of NFC in nonlinear crystals. Furthermore, we find that a linearly polarized vector beam should be transformed to an exponential form before performing the NFC. The experimental results are well agree with our theoretical model. The present method is also applicable to other wave bands and second order nonlinear processes, and may also be generalized to the quantum regime for single photons.

Size-dependent lattice dynamics of atomically precise cadmium selenide quantum dots

Material properties depend sensitively on the atomic arrangements and atomic bonding, but these are notoriously difficult to measure in nanosized atomic clusters due to the small size of the objects and the challenge of obtaining bulk samples of identical clusters. Here we have combined the recent ability to make gram quantities of identical semiconductor quantum-dot nanoparticles with the ability to measure lattice dynamics on small sample quantities of hydrogenated materials using high energy resolution inelastic x-ray scattering (HERIX), to measure the size-dependence of the phonon density of states (PDOS) in CdSe quantum dots. The fact that we have atomically precise structural models for these nanoparticles allows the calculation of the PDOS using Density Functional Theory (DFT), providing both experimental and theoretical confirmations of the important role that the inertia of the surface capping species plays on determining the lattice dynamics.

Topological charge independent frequency conversion of twisted light

Light with orbital angular momentum (OAM), or twisted light, is widely investigated in the fields of optical communications, quantum information science and nonlinear optics by harnessing its unbounded dimension. For light-matter interacting with twisted light like quantum memory and nonlinear frequency conversion, efficiencies in these processes are usually decreasing exponentially with topological charges, which severely degrades the fidelity of the output states. Here we conceive and develop a method to eliminate the dependence of conversion efficiency on topological charges in second harmonic generation (SHG) process by utilizing a special designed image technique. The independence of SHG conversion efficiency on topological charge is verified for different topological charges, this independence is valid for various pump power. This method can be generalized to other light matter interaction processes and will revolute the field of light matter interaction with twisted light to achieve higher efficiency and higher fidelity.

Up-conversion imaging processing with field-of-view and edge enhancement

Spiral phase contrast is an important and convenient imaging processing technology in edge detection, and a broader field-of-view (FOV) of imaging is a long-pursuing aim to see more regions of the illumination objects. Compared with near-infrared (NIR) spectrum, the up-conversion imaging in visible spectrum benefits from the advantages of higher efficiency detection and lower potential speckle. FOV enhanced and spiral phase contrast up-conversion imaging processing methods by using second order nonlinear frequency up-conversion from NIR spectrum to visible spectrum in two different configurations are presented in this work. By changing the temperature of crystal, controllable spatial patterns of imaging with more than 4.5 times enhancement of FOV is realized in both configurations. Additionally, we present numerical simulations of the phenomenon, which agree well with the experimental observations. Our results provide a very promising way in imaging processing, which may be widely used in biomedicine, remote sensing and up-conversion monitoring.

Isotropic non-local Gilbert damping driven by spin currents in epitaxial Pd/Fe/MgO(001) films

Although both theoretical predications and experimental observations demonstrated that the damping factor is anisotropic at ferromagnet/semiconductor interface with robust interfacial spin-orbit coupling, it is not well understood whether non-local Gilbert damping driven by spin currents in heavy metal/ferromagnetic metal (HM/FM) bilayers is anisotropic or not. Here, we investigated the in-plane angular- and frequency- dependence of magnetic relaxation of epitaxial Fe/MgO(001) films with different capping layers of Pd and Cu. After disentangling the parasitic contributions, such as two-magnon scattering (TMS), mosaicity, and field-dragging effect, we unambiguously observed that both local and non-local Gilbert damping are isotropic in Fe(001) plane, suggesting that the pure spin currents absorption is independent of Fe magnetization orientation in the epitaxial Pd/Fe heterostructure. First principles calculation reveals that the effective spin mixing conductance of Pd/Fe interface is nearly invariant for different magnetization directions in good agreement with the experimental observations. These results offer a valuable insight into the transmission and absorption of pure spin currents, and facilitate us to utilize next-generation spintronic devices.

A new C-D-like diagram for SPB stars: The variations of period spacing as a signature of evolutionary status

The Slowly Pulsating B-type (SPB) stars are the upper main-sequence stars on the HR diagram. Their oscillations are high-order, low-degree g-mode and can be used to probe the structure of the radiative zone where is near the outer boundary of the convective core and constrain the chemical mixing in stellar interiors. In SPB stars, the period spacing periodically varies with periods. It has regarded as a signature of the chemical composition gradient beyond the convective core. Based on theoretical calculations, we find that the variation frequency of the period spacings ($f_{ΔP}$) is related to the width of the $μ$-gradient region on the buoyancy radius ($Λ_μ$) with the relation of $f_{ΔP}\sim0.5Λ_μ$. This indicates that the variation frequency $f_{ΔP}$ is sensitive to the central hydrogen mass fraction $X_{\rm C}$ (i.e., the evolutionary status). Finally, we find that the variation frequency $f_{ΔP}$ and the means of the period spacings $\langleΔP\rangle$ can be used to construct a new C-D-like diagram ($f_{ΔP}$ vs. $\langleΔP\rangle$) which can be used to roughly decide the stellar evolutionary stages and to approximately determine stellar mass for SPB stars.

Determining the evolutionary stage of the delta Scuti star HIP 80088 with asteroseismology

We have computed a grid of theoretical models to fit the twelve oscillation modes of HIP 80088 observed by K2. HIP 80088 is determined to be a pre-main sequence star, in which CN cycle has not arrived at the equilibrium state. Mass fractions of C12 and N14 in metal composition are 0.1277$^{+0.0064}_{-0.0049}$ and 0.1092$^{+0.0057}_{-0.0074}$ respectively, indicating that twenty-eight percent of C12 have turned into N14. Meanwhile, our fitting results show that physical parameters of HIP 80088 converge to a small range: $M$ = 1.68$-$1.78 $M _{\odot}$, $Z$ = 0.015$-$0.018, $\upsilon_{\rm e}$ = 120$-$136 km s$^{-1}$, $\log g$ = 4.114$-$4.125, $R$ = 1.882$-$1.914 $R_{\odot}$, $τ_{0}$ = 7636$-$7723 s, and age = 9.03$-$10.21 Myr. Based on our model fittings, $f_{3}$ is suggested to be one radial mode, $f_{2}$, $f_{4}$, $f_{8}$, and $f_{11}$ to be four $\ell$ = 1 modes, and $f_{1}$, $f_{5}$, $f_{6}$, $f_{7}$, $f_{9}$, $f_{10}$, and $f_{12}$ to be seven $\ell$ = 2 modes. In particularly, we find that ($f_{2}$, $f_{4}$, $f_{8}$) form one complete triplet with the averaged frequency spacing of 16.045 $μ$Hz , and ($f_{5}$, $f_{7}$, $f_{9}$, $f_{10}$) form four components of one quintuplet with the averaged frequency spacing of 13.388 $μ$Hz. The two averaged frequency spacings are not equal. Based on the best-fitting model, those $\ell$ = 2 modes of HIP 80088 are found to be mixed modes, which are p-dominated modes with pronounced g-mode features, while oscillation modes with $\ell$ = 1 are p modes.
