Resource Allocation for IRS-assisted Full-Duplex Cognitive Radio Systems

In this paper, we investigate the resource allocation design for intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted full-duplex (FD) cognitive radio systems. In particular, a secondary network employs an FD base station (BS) for serving multiple half-duplex downlink (DL) and uplink (UL) users simultaneously. An IRS is deployed to enhance the performance of the secondary network while helping to mitigate the interference caused to the primary users (PUs). The DL transmit beamforming vectors and the UL receive beamforming vectors at the FD BS, the transmit power of the UL users, and the phase shift matrix at the IRS are jointly optimized for maximization of the total sum rate of the secondary system. The design task is formulated as a non-convex optimization problem taking into account the imperfect knowledge of the PUs' channel state information (CSI) and their maximum interference tolerance. Since the maximum interference tolerance constraint is intractable, we apply a safe approximation to transform it into a convex constraint. To efficiently handle the resulting approximated optimization problem, which is still non-convex, we develop an iterative block coordinate descent (BCD)-based algorithm. This algorithm exploits semidefinite relaxation, a penalty method, and successive convex approximation and is guaranteed to converge to a stationary point of the approximated optimization problem. Our simulation results do not only reveal that the proposed scheme yields a substantially higher system sum rate for the secondary system than several baseline schemes, but also confirm its robustness against CSI uncertainty. Besides, our results illustrate the tremendous potential of IRS for managing the various types of interference arising in FD cognitive radio networks.

A combined laser-based ARPES and 2PPES study of Td-WTe$_2$

Laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and two-photon photoemission spectroscopy (2PPES) are employed to study the valence electronic structure of the Weyl semimetal candidate Td-WTe$_2$ along two high symmetry directions and for binding energies between $\approx$ -1 eV and 5 eV. The experimental data show a good agreement with band structure calculations. Polarization dependent measurements provide furthermore information on initial and intermediate state symmetry properties with respect to the mirror plane of the Td structure of WTe$_2$.

Intrinsic anomalous Hall effect in Ni-substituted magnetic Weyl semimetal Co3Sn2S2

Topological materials have recently attracted considerable attention among materials scientists as their properties are predicted to be protected against perturbations such as lattice distortion and chemical substitution. However, any experimental proof of such robustness is still lacking. In this study, we experimentally demonstrate that the topological properties of the ferromagnetic kagome compound Co3Sn2S2 are preserved upon Ni substitution. We systematically vary the Ni content in Co3Sn2S2 single crystals and study their magnetic and anomalous transport properties. For the intermediate Ni substitution, we observe a remarkable increase in the coercive field while still maintaining significant anomalous Hall conductivity. The large anomalous Hall conductivity of these compounds is intrinsic, consistent with first-principle calculations, which proves its topological origin. Our results can guide further studies on the chemical tuning of topological materials for better understanding.

Extended Stochastic Gradient MCMC for Large-Scale Bayesian Variable Selection

Stochastic gradient Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms have received much attention in Bayesian computing for big data problems, but they are only applicable to a small class of problems for which the parameter space has a fixed dimension and the log-posterior density is differentiable with respect to the parameters. This paper proposes an extended stochastic gradient MCMC lgoriathm which, by introducing appropriate latent variables, can be applied to more general large-scale Bayesian computing problems, such as those involving dimension jumping and missing data. Numerical studies show that the proposed algorithm is highly scalable and much more efficient than traditional MCMC algorithms. The proposed algorithms have much alleviated the pain of Bayesian methods in big data computing.

Identification of chirality of chiral multifold fermions in anti-crystals

The chirality of chiral multifold fermions in reciprocal space is related to the chirality of the crystal lattice structure in real space. In this work, we propose a strategy to detect and identify opposite-chirality multifold fermions in nonmagnetic systems by means of second-order optical transports. The chiral crystals are related by an inversion operation and cannot overlap with each other by any experimental operation, and the chiral multifold fermions in the crystals host opposite chiralities for a given k-point. A change of chirality is indicated by a sign change of the second-order charge current dominated by chiral fermions. This strategy is effective to study the relationship between chiralities in reciprocal and real spaces by utilizing bulk transport.

Strong bulk photovoltaic effect in chiral crystal in the visible spectrum

Structurally chiral materials hosting multifold fermions with large topological number have attracted considerable attention because of their naturally long surface Fermi arcs and bulk quantized circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE). Multifold fermions only appear in metallic states, and therefore, most studies so far have only focused on the semimetals in compounds with chiral crystal structures. In this work, we show that the structurally chiral topological trivial insulators are also exotic states, which is interesting from the application point of view, owing to their natural advantage to host a large bulk photovoltaic effect in the visible wavelength region. In the last decades, the shift current in the visible wavelength region was limited to be 10 uA/V2 . By scanning the insulators with chiral structure, we found a class of compounds with photoconductivity ranging from 20 to 80 uA/V2 , which is approximately one order of magnitude larger than that reported in other real materials. This work illustrates that the compounds with chiral structure can host both quantum CPGE and a strong shift current in the second order optical response. Moreover, this work offers a good platform for the study of the shift current and its future application by putting the focus on insulator with chiral lattices, so far overlooked in photovoltaic technologies.

Interval-Valued Kriging Models for Geostatistical Mapping with Imprecise Inputs

Many geosciences data are imprecise due to various limitations and uncertainties in the measuring process. One way to preserve this imprecision in a geostatistical mapping framework is to characterize the measurements as intervals rather than single values. To effectively analyze the interval-valued data, this paper proposes and develops interval-valued kriging models based on the theory of random sets and a generalized L2 metric. These models overcome the mathematical difficulties of a previous development and are computationally more feasible. Numerical implementation of our interval-valued kriging is provided using a penalty-based constrained optimization algorithm. An application to the prediction of design ground snow loads in Utah, USA, is presented that demonstrates the advantages of the proposed models in preserving crucial sources of uncertainty towards a more efficient risk-based designing scheme.

Learning-based real-time method to looking through scattering medium beyond the memory effect

Strong scattering medium brings great difficulties to optical imaging, which is also a problem in medical imaging and many other fields. Optical memory effect makes it possible to image through strong random scattering medium. However, this method also has the limitation of limited angle field-of-view (FOV), which prevents it from being applied in practice. In this paper, a kind of practical convolutional neural network called PDSNet is proposed, which effectively breaks through the limitation of optical memory effect on FOV. Experiments is conducted to prove that the scattered pattern can be reconstructed accurately in real-time by PDSNet, and it is widely applicable to retrieve complex objects of random scales and different scattering media.

Resource Allocation for Secure IRS-assisted Multiuser MISO Systems

In this paper, we study resource allocation design for secure communication in intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted multiuser multiple-input single-output (MISO) communication systems. To enhance physical layer security, artificial noise (AN) is transmitted from the base station (BS) to deliberately impair the channel of an eavesdropper. In particular, we jointly optimize the phase shift matrix at the IRS and the beamforming vectors and AN covariance matrix at the BS for maximization of the system sum secrecy rate. To handle the resulting non-convex optimization problem, we develop an efficient suboptimal algorithm based on alternating optimization, successive convex approximation, semidefinite relaxation, and manifold optimization. Our simulation results reveal that the proposed scheme substantially improves the system sum secrecy rate compared to two baseline schemes.

Resource Allocation for Multi-User Downlink MISO OFDMA-URLLC Systems

This paper considers the resource allocation algorithm design for downlink multiple-input single-output (MISO) orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC) systems. To meet the stringent delay requirements of URLLC, short packet transmission is adopted and taken into account for resource allocation algorithm design. The resource allocation is optimized for maximization of the weighted system sum throughput subject to quality-of-service (QoS) constraints regarding the URLLC users' number of transmitted bits, packet error probability, and delay. Despite the non-convexity of the resulting optimization problem, the optimal solution is found via monotonic optimization. The corresponding optimal resource allocation policy can serve as a performance upper bound for sub-optimal low-complexity solutions. We develop such a low-complexity resource allocation algorithm to strike a balance between performance and complexity. Our simulation results reveal the importance of using multiple antennas for reducing the latency and improving the reliability of URLLC systems. Moreover, the proposed sub-optimal algorithm is shown to closely approach the performance of the proposed optimal algorithm and outperforms two baseline schemes by a considerable margin, especially when the users have heterogeneous delay requirements. Finally, conventional resource allocation designs based on Shannon's capacity formula are shown to be not applicable in MISO OFDMA-URLLC systems as they may violate the users' delay constraints.

Giant anomalous Hall effect in a ferromagnetic Kagome-lattice semimetal

Magnetic Weyl semimetals with broken time-reversal symmetry are expected to generate strong intrinsic anomalous Hall effects, due to their large Berry curvature. Here, we report a magnetic Weyl semimetal candidate Co3Sn2S2 with a quasi-two-dimensional crystal structure consisting of stacked Kagome lattices. This lattice provides an excellent platform for hosting exotic quantum topological states. We observe a negative magnetoresistance that is consistent with the chiral anomaly expected from the presence of Weyl fermions close to the Fermi level. The anomalous Hall conductivity is robust against both increased temperature and charge conductivity, which corroborates the intrinsic Berry-curvature mechanism in momentum space. Owing to the low carrier density in this material and the significantly enhanced Berry curvature from its band structure, the anomalous Hall conductivity and the anomalous Hall angle simultaneously reach 1130 S cm-1 and 20%, respectively, an order of magnitude larger than typical magnetic systems. Combining the Kagome-lattice structure and the long-range out-of-plane ferromagnetic order of Co3Sn2S2, we expect that this material is an excellent candidate for observation of the quantum anomalous Hall state in the two-dimensional limit.

Molecular cloud distances based on the MWISP CO survey and Gaia DR2

We present a new method of calculating distances of molecular clouds in the Galactic plane, using CO observations and the Gaia DR2 parallax and G-band extinction ($A_G$) measurements. Due to the complexity of dust environments in the Galactic plane, $A_G$ contains irregular variations, which is difficult to model. To overcome this difficulty, we propose that the $A_G$ of off-cloud stars (Gaia stars around molecular clouds) can be used as a baseline to calibrate the $A_G$ of on-cloud stars (Gaia stars toward molecular clouds), which removes the $A_G$ components that are unrelated to molecular clouds. The distance is subsequently inferred from the jump point in on-cloud $A_G$ with Bayesian analysis and Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling. We applied this baseline subtraction method to a 100 square degree region (209.75° $\leq$ l $\leq$ 219.75° and |b| $\leq$ 5°) in the third Galactic quadrant, which was mapped as part of the Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting (MWISP) project, covering three CO isotopologue lines, and derived distances and masses for 11 molecular clouds, including the Maddalena molecular cloud and Sh 2-287. The results indicate that the distance of the Perseus Arm in this region is about 2.4 kpc and molecular clouds are present in the interarm regions.

Signatures for half-metallicity and nontrivial surface states in a Kagome-lattice magnetic Weyl semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$

Weyl semimetals with time reversal symmetry breaking are expected to show various fascinating physical behaviors, such as intrinsic giant anomalous Hall effect, chiral anomaly effect in the bulks, and Fermi arcs on the surfaces. Here we report a scanning tunneling microscopy study on the magnetic Weyl semimetal candidate Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$. According to the morphology and local density of states of the surface, we provide assignments to different surface terminations. The measured local density of states reveals a semimetal gap of ~300 mV, which is further verified as the gap in spin-minority bands using spin-resolved tunneling spectra. Additionally, signature for the nontrivial surface states around 50 mV is proposed. This is further confirmed by the observations of standing waves around a step-edge of the sample. Our observations and their comparison with band structure calculations provide direct yet timely evidence for the bulk and surface band structures of the magnetic Weyl semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$.

Surface states in bulk single crystal of topological semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ towards water oxidation

The band inversion in topological phase matters bring exotic physical properties such as the emergence of a topologically protected surface states. They strongly influence the surface electronic structures of the investigated materials and could serve as a good platform to gain insight into the catalytic mechanism of surface reactions. Here we synthesized high-quality bulk single crystals of the topological semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$. We found that at room temperature, Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ naturally hosts the band structure of a topological semimetal. This guarantees the existence of robust surface states from the Co atoms. Bulk single crystal of Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ exposes their Kagome lattice that constructed by Co atoms and have high electrical conductivity. They serves as catalytic centers for oxygen evolution process (OER), making bonding and electron transfer more efficient due to the partially filled $e_g$ orbital. The bulk single crystal exhibits outstanding OER catalytic performance, although the surface area is much smaller than that of Co-based nanostructured catalysts. Our findings emphasize the importance of tailoring topological non-trivial surface states for the rational design of high-activity electrocatalysts.

Thickness dependence of the anomalous Hall effect in thin films of the topological semimetal Co$_2$MnGa

Topological magnetic semimetals promise large Berry curvature through the distribution of the topological Weyl nodes or nodal lines and further novel physics with exotic transport phenomena. We present a systematic study of the structural and magnetotransport properties of Co$_2$MnGa films from thin (20 nm) to bulk like behavior (80 nm), in order to understand the underlying mechanisms and the role on the topology. The magnetron sputtered Co$_2$MnGa films are $L$$2_{\mathrm {1}}$-ordered showing very good heteroepitaxy and a strain-induced tetragonal distortion. The anomalous Hall conductivity was found to be maximum at a value of 1138 S/cm, with a corresponding anomalous Hall angle of 13 %, which is comparatively larger than topologically trivial metals. There is a good agreement between the theoretical calculations and the Hall conductivity observed for the 80 nm film, which suggest that the effect is intrinsic. Thus, the Co$_2$MnGa compound manifests as a promising material towards topologically-driven spintronic applications.

Magnetic semimetals and quantized anomalous Hall effect in EuB6

Exploration of the novel relationship between magnetic order and topological semimetals has received enormous interest in a wide range of both fundamental and applied research. Here we predict that soft ferromagnetic (FM) material EuB6 can achieve multiple topological semimetal phases by simply tuning the direction of the magnetic moment. Explicitly, EuB6 is a topological nodal-line semimetal when the moment is aligned along the [001] direction, and it evolves into a Weyl semimetal with three pairs of Weyl nodes by rotating the moment to the [111] direction. Interestingly, we identify a novel semimetal phase featuring the coexistence of a nodal line and Weyl nodes with the moment in the [110] direction. Topological surface states and anomalous Hall conductivity, which is sensitive to the magnetic order, have been computed and are expected to be experimentally observable. Large-Chern-number quantum anomalous Hall effect can be realized in its [111]-oriented quantum-well structure.

Difference frequency generation in topological semimetals

When two lasers are applied to a non-centrosymmetric material, light can be generated at the difference of the incoming frequencies $Δω$, a phenomenon known as difference frequency generation (DFG), well characterized in semiconductors. In this work, we derive a general expression for DFG in metals, which we use to show that the DFG in chiral topological semimetals under circular polarized light is quantized in units of $e^3/h^2$ and independent of material parameters, including the scattering time $τ$, when $Δω\gg τ^{-1}$. In this regime, DFG provides a simpler alternative to measure a quantized response in metals compared to previous proposals based on single frequency experiments. Our general derivation unmasks, in addition, a free-carrier contribution to the circular DFG beyond the semiclassical one. This contribution can be written as a Fermi surface integral, features strong frequency dependence, and oscillates with a $π/2$ shift with respect to the quantized contribution. We make predictions for the circular DFG of chiral and non-chiral materials using generic effective models, and ab-initio calculations for TaAs and RhSi. Our work provides a complete picture of the DFG in the length gauge approach, in the clean, non-interacting limit, and highlights a plausible experiment to measure topologically quantizated photocurrents in metals.

Extremely high conductivity observed in the triple point topological metal MoP

Weyl and Dirac fermions have created much attention in condensed matter physics and materials science. Recently, several additional distinct types of fermions have been predicted. Here, we report ultra-high electrical conductivity in MoP at low temperature, which has recently been established as a triple point Fermion material. Here we show that the electrical resistivity is 6 n-ohm cm at 2 K with a large mean free path of 11 microns. de Haas-van Alphen oscillations reveal spin splitting of the Fermi surfaces. In contrast to noble metals with similar conductivity and number of carriers, the magnetoresistance in MoP does not saturate up to 9 T at 2 K. Interestingly, the momentum relaxing time of the electrons is found to be more than 15 times larger than the quantum coherence time. This difference between the scattering scales shows that momentum conserving scattering dominates in MoP at low temperatures.
