Orbital Angular Momentum-based Space Division Multiplexing for High-capacity Underwater Optical Communications

To increase system capacity of underwater optical communications, we employ the spatial domain to simultaneously transmit multiple orthogonal spatial beams, each carrying an independent data channel. In this paper, we multiplex and transmit four green orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams through a single aperture. Moreover, we investigate the degrading effects of scattering/turbidity, water current, and thermal gradient-induced turbulence, and we find that thermal gradients cause the most distortions and turbidity causes the most loss. We show systems results using two different data generation techniques, one at 1064 nm for 10-Gbit/s/beam and one at 520 nm for 1-Gbit/s/beam, we use both techniques since present data-modulation technologies are faster for infrared (IR) than for green. For the higher-rate link, data is modulated in the IR, and OAM imprinting is performed in the green using a specially-designed metasurface phase mask. For the lower rates, a green laser diode is directly modulated. Finally, we show that inter-channel crosstalk induced by thermal gradients can be mitigated using multi-channel equalisation processing.

PET: An Eye-tracking Dataset for Animal-centric PASCAL Object Classes

We present the Pascal animal classes Eye Tracking database. Our database comprises eye movement recordings compiled from forty users for the bird, cat, cow, dog, horse and sheep {trainval} sets from the VOC 2012 image set. Different from recent eye-tracking databases such as \cite{kiwon_cvpr13_gaze,PapadopoulosCKF14}, a salient aspect of PET is that it contains eye movements recorded for both the free-viewing and visual search task conditions. While some differences in terms of overall gaze behavior and scanning patterns are observed between the two conditions, a very similar number of fixations are observed on target objects for both conditions. As a utility application, we show how feature pooling around fixated locations enables enhanced (animal) object classification accuracy.

Learning Hough Regression Models via Bridge Partial Least Squares for Object Detection

Popular Hough Transform-based object detection approaches usually construct an appearance codebook by clustering local image features. However, how to choose appropriate values for the parameters used in the clustering step remains an open problem. Moreover, some popular histogram features extracted from overlapping image blocks may cause a high degree of redundancy and multicollinearity. In this paper, we propose a novel Hough Transform-based object detection approach. First, to address the above issues, we exploit a Bridge Partial Least Squares (BPLS) technique to establish context-encoded Hough Regression Models (HRMs), which are linear regression models that cast probabilistic Hough votes to predict object locations. BPLS is an efficient variant of Partial Least Squares (PLS). PLS-based regression techniques (including BPLS) can reduce the redundancy and eliminate the multicollinearity of a feature set. And the appropriate value of the only parameter used in PLS (i.e., the number of latent components) can be determined by using a cross-validation procedure. Second, to efficiently handle object scale changes, we propose a novel multi-scale voting scheme. In this scheme, multiple Hough images corresponding to multiple object scales can be obtained simultaneously. Third, an object in a test image may correspond to multiple true and false positive hypotheses at different scales. Based on the proposed multi-scale voting scheme, a principled strategy is proposed to fuse hypotheses to reduce false positives by evaluating normalized pointwise mutual information between hypotheses. In the experiments, we also compare the proposed HRM approach with its several variants to evaluate the influences of its components on its performance. Experimental results show that the proposed HRM approach has achieved desirable performances on popular benchmark datasets.

Quadratic Projection Based Feature Extraction with Its Application to Biometric Recognition

This paper presents a novel quadratic projection based feature extraction framework, where a set of quadratic matrices is learned to distinguish each class from all other classes. We formulate quadratic matrix learning (QML) as a standard semidefinite programming (SDP) problem. However, the con- ventional interior-point SDP solvers do not scale well to the problem of QML for high-dimensional data. To solve the scalability of QML, we develop an efficient algorithm, termed DualQML, based on the Lagrange duality theory, to extract nonlinear features. To evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed framework, we conduct extensive experiments on biometric recognition. Experimental results on three representative biometric recogni- tion tasks, including face, palmprint, and ear recognition, demonstrate the superiority of the DualQML-based feature extraction algorithm compared to the current state-of-the-art algorithms

An Effective Unconstrained Correlation Filter and Its Kernelization for Face Recognition

In this paper, an effective unconstrained correlation filter called Uncon- strained Optimal Origin Tradeoff Filter (UOOTF) is presented and applied to robust face recognition. Compared with the conventional correlation filters in Class-dependence Feature Analysis (CFA), UOOTF improves the overall performance for unseen patterns by removing the hard constraints on the origin correlation outputs during the filter design. To handle non-linearly separable distributions between different classes, we further develop a non- linear extension of UOOTF based on the kernel technique. The kernel ex- tension of UOOTF allows for higher flexibility of the decision boundary due to a wider range of non-linearity properties. Experimental results demon- strate the effectiveness of the proposed unconstrained correlation filter and its kernelization in the task of face recognition.

Mode-Seeking on Hypergraphs for Robust Geometric Model Fitting

In this paper, we propose a novel geometric model fitting method, called Mode-Seeking on Hypergraphs (MSH),to deal with multi-structure data even in the presence of severe outliers. The proposed method formulates geometric model fitting as a mode seeking problem on a hypergraph in which vertices represent model hypotheses and hyperedges denote data points. MSH intuitively detects model instances by a simple and effective mode seeking algorithm. In addition to the mode seeking algorithm, MSH includes a similarity measure between vertices on the hypergraph and a weight-aware sampling technique. The proposed method not only alleviates sensitivity to the data distribution, but also is scalable to large scale problems. Experimental results further demonstrate that the proposed method has significant superiority over the state-of-the-art fitting methods on both synthetic data and real images.

Multi-Subregion Based Correlation Filter Bank for Robust Face Recognition

In this paper, we propose an effective feature extraction algorithm, called Multi-Subregion based Correlation Filter Bank (MS-CFB), for robust face recognition. MS-CFB combines the benefits of global-based and local-based feature extraction algorithms, where multiple correlation filters correspond- ing to different face subregions are jointly designed to optimize the overall correlation outputs. Furthermore, we reduce the computational complexi- ty of MS-CFB by designing the correlation filter bank in the spatial domain and improve its generalization capability by capitalizing on the unconstrained form during the filter bank design process. MS-CFB not only takes the d- ifferences among face subregions into account, but also effectively exploits the discriminative information in face subregions. Experimental results on various public face databases demonstrate that the proposed algorithm pro- vides a better feature representation for classification and achieves higher recognition rates compared with several state-of-the-art algorithms.

Search by Ideal Candidates: Next Generation of Talent Search at LinkedIn

One key challenge in talent search is how to translate complex criteria of a hiring position into a search query. This typically requires deep knowledge on which skills are typically needed for the position, what are their alternatives, which companies are likely to have such candidates, etc. However, listing examples of suitable candidates for a given position is a relatively easy job. Therefore, in order to help searchers overcome this challenge, we design a next generation of talent search paradigm at LinkedIn: Search by Ideal Candidates. This new system only needs the searcher to input one or several examples of suitable candidates for the position. The system will generate a query based on the input candidates and then retrieve and rank results based on the query as well as the input candidates. The query is also shown to the searcher to make the system transparent and to allow the searcher to interact with it. As the searcher modifies the initial query and makes it deviate from the ideal candidates, the search ranking function dynamically adjusts an refreshes the ranking results balancing between the roles of query and ideal candidates. As of writing this paper, the new system is being launched to our customers.

Time and Frequency Structure of Causal Correlation Network in China Bond Market

There are more than eight hundred interest rates published in China bond market every day. Which are the benchmark interest rates that have broad influences on most interest rates is a major concern for economists. In this paper, multi-variable Granger causality test is developed and applied to construct a directed network of interest rates, whose important nodes, regarded as key interest rates, are evaluated with inverse Page Rank scores. The results indicate that some short-term interest rates have larger influences on the most key interest rates, while repo rates are the benchmark of short-term rates. It is also found that central bank bills'rates are in the core position of mid-term interest rates'network, and treasury bond rates are leading the long-term bonds rates. The evolution of benchmark interest rates is also studied from 2008 to 2014, and it's found that SHIBOR has generally become the benchmark interest rate in China. In the frequency domain we detect the properties of information flows between interest rates and the result confirms the existence of market segmentation in China bond market.

Non-classical non-Gaussian state of a mechanical resonator via selectively incoherent damping in three-mode optomechanical systems

We theoretically propose a scheme for the generation of a non-classical single-mode motional state of a mechanical resonator (MR) in the three-mode optomechanical systems, in which two optical modes of the cavities are linearly coupled to each other and one mechanical mode of the MR is optomechanically coupled to the two optical modes with the same coupling strength simultaneously. One cavity is driven by a coherent laser light. By properly tuning the frequency of the weak driving field, we obtain engineered Liouvillian superoperator via engineering the selective interaction Hamiltonian confined to the Fock subspaces. In this case, the motional state of the MR can be prepared into a non-Gaussian state, which possesses the sub-Poisson statistics although its Wigner function is positive.

Learning Deep Representations of Appearance and Motion for Anomalous Event Detection

We present a novel unsupervised deep learning framework for anomalous event detection in complex video scenes. While most existing works merely use hand-crafted appearance and motion features, we propose Appearance and Motion DeepNet (AMDN) which utilizes deep neural networks to automatically learn feature representations. To exploit the complementary information of both appearance and motion patterns, we introduce a novel double fusion framework, combining both the benefits of traditional early fusion and late fusion strategies. Specifically, stacked denoising autoencoders are proposed to separately learn both appearance and motion features as well as a joint representation (early fusion). Based on the learned representations, multiple one-class SVM models are used to predict the anomaly scores of each input, which are then integrated with a late fusion strategy for final anomaly detection. We evaluate the proposed method on two publicly available video surveillance datasets, showing competitive performance with respect to state of the art approaches.

Studies of two-solar-mass hybrid stars within the framework of Dyson-Schwinger equations

In this paper we introduce an equation of state (EOS) of quark matter within the framework of Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSEs) to study the structure of compact stars. The smooth crossover from hadronic matter to quark matter in the hybrid star is studied. We compare different strategies to obtain crossover EOSs and find a new way to construct two-solar-mass hybrid stars with even a relatively soft quark EOS, while earlier works show that the quark EOS should be stiff enough to support a massive hybrid star.

2+1 flavors QCD equation of state at zero temperature within Dyson-Schwinger equations

Within the framework of Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSEs), we discuss the equation of state (EOS) and quark number densities of 2+1 flavors, that is to say, $u$, $d$, and $s$ quarks. The chemical equilibrium and electric charge neutrality conditions are used to constrain the chemical potential of different quarks. The EOS in the cases of 2 flavors and 2+1 flavors are discussed, and the quark number densities, the pressure, and energy density per baryon are also studied. The results show that there is a critical chemical potential for each flavor of quark, at which the quark number density turns to nonzero from 0; and furthermore, the system with 2+1 flavors of quarks is more stable than that with 2 flavors in the system. These discussion may provide some useful information to some research fields, such as the studies related to the QCD phase transitions or compact stars.

Simulation of proton radiography terminal at IMP

Proton radiography is used for advanced hydrotesting as a new type radiography technology due to its powerful penetration capability and high detection efficiency. A new proton radiography terminal will be developed to radiograph static samples at Institute of Modern Physics of Chinese Academy of Science (IMP-CAS). The proton beam with the maximum energy of 2.6 GeV will be produced by Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou-Cooling Storage Ring (HIRFL-CSR). The proton radiography terminal consists of the matching magnetic lens and the Zumbro lens system. In this paper, the design scheme and all optic parameters of this beam terminal for 2.6GeV proton energy are presented by simulating the beam optics using WINAGILE code. My-BOC code is used to test the particle tracking of proton radiography beam line. Geant4 code and G4beamline code are used for simulating the proton radiography system. The results show that the transmission efficiency of proton without target is 100%, and the effect of secondary particles can be neglected. In order to test this proton radiography system, the proton images for an aluminum plate sample with two rectangular orifices and a step brass plate sample are respectively simulated using Geant4 code. The results show that the best spatial resolution is about 36μm, and the differences of the thickness is not greater than 10%.

Study on the unfolding algorithm for D-T neutron energy spectra measurement using recoil proton method

A proton recoil method for measuring D-T neutron energy spectra using polyethylene film and Si (Au) surface barrier detector was presented. An iteration algorithm for unfolding the recoil proton energy spectrum to the neutron energy spectrum was investigated. The response matrixes R of polyethylene film at 0 degree and 45 degree were obtained by simulating the recoil proton energy spectra from the mono-energetic neutron using MCNP code. Under an assumed D-T neutron spectrum, the recoil proton spectra from polyethylene film at 0 degree and 45 degree were also simulated using MCNP code. Based on the response matrixes R and the simulated recoil proton spectra at 0 degree and 45 degree, the unfolded neutron spectra were respectively obtained using the iteration algorithm, and compared with the assumed neutron spectrum. The results show that the iteration algorithm method can be applied to unfold the recoil proton energy spectrum to the neutron energy spectrum for D-T neutron energy spectra measurement using recoil proton method.

Performance Metrics and Design Parameters for a Free-space Communication Link Based on Multiplexing of Multiple Orbital-Angular-Momentum Beams

We study the design parameters for an orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexed free-space data link. Power loss, channel crosstalk and power penalty of the link are analyzed in the case of misalignment between the transmitter and receiver (lateral displacement, receiver angular error, or transmitter pointing error). The relationship among the system power loss and link distance, transmitted beam size and receiver aperture size are discussed based on the beam divergence due to free space propagation. We also describe the trade-offs for different receiver aperture sizes and mode spacing of the transmitted OAM beams under given lateral displacements or receiver angular errors. Through simulations and some experiments, we show that (1) a system with a larger transmitted beam size and a larger receiver aperture is more tolerant to the lateral displacement but less tolerant to the receiver angular error; (2) a system with a larger mode spacing, which uses larger OAM charges, suffers more system power loss but less channel crosstalk; thus, a system with a small mode spacing shows lower system power penalty when system power loss dominates (e.g., small lateral displacement or receiver angular error) while that with a larger mode spacing shows lower power penalty when channel crosstalk dominates (e.g., larger lateral displacement or receiver angular error); (3) the effects of lateral displacement and receiver angular error are not necessarily independent; as an example of them combined, the effects of the transmitter pointing error on the system are also investigated.

Tracking individual nanodiamonds in Drosophila melanogaster embryos

Tracking the dynamics of fluorescent nanoparticles during embryonic development allows insights into the physical state of the embryo and, potentially, molecular processes governing developmental mechanisms. In this work, we investigate the motion of individual fluorescent nanodiamonds micro-injected into Drosophila melanogaster embryos prior to cellularisation. Fluorescence correlation spectroscopy and wide-field imaging techniques are applied to individual fluorescent nanodiamonds in blastoderm cells during stage 5 of development to a depth of ~40 μm. The majority of nanodiamonds in the blastoderm cells during cellularisation exhibit free diffusion with an average diffusion coefficient of (6 $\pm$ 3) x 10$^{-3}$ μm$^2$/s, (mean $\pm$ SD). Driven motion in the blastoderm cells was also observed with an average velocity of 0.13 $\pm$ 0.10 μm/s (mean $\pm$ SD) μm/s and an average applied force of 0.07 $\pm$ 0.05 pN (mean $\pm$ SD). Nanodiamonds in the periplasm between the nuclei and yolk were also found to undergo free diffusion with a significantly larger diffusion coefficient of (63 $\pm$ 35) x10$^{-3}$ μm$^2$/s (mean $\pm$ SD). Driven motion in this region exhibited similar average velocities and applied forces compared to the blastoderm cells indicating the transport dynamics in the two cytoplasmic regions are analogous.

Feed-forward control for quantum state protection against decoherence

We propose a novel scheme of feed-forward control and its reversal for protecting quantum state against decoherence. Before the noise channel our pre-weak measurement and feed-forward are just to change the protected state into the state almost immune to the noise channel, and after the channel our reversed operations and post-weak measurements are just to restore the protected state. Unlike most previous state protection schemes, ours only concerns the noise channel and does not care about the protected state. We show that our scheme can effectively protect unknown states, nonorthogonal states and entangled states against amplitude damping noise. Our scheme has dramatic merits of protecting quantum states against heavy amplitude damping noise, and can perfectly protect some specific nonorthogonal states in an almost deterministic way, which might be found some applications in current quantum communication technology. And it is most important that our scheme is experimentally available with current technology.
