Efficient Semidefinite Spectral Clustering via Lagrange Duality

We propose an efficient approach to semidefinite spectral clustering (SSC), which addresses the Frobenius normalization with the positive semidefinite (p.s.d.) constraint for spectral clustering. Compared with the original Frobenius norm approximation based algorithm, the proposed algorithm can more accurately find the closest doubly stochastic approximation to the affinity matrix by considering the p.s.d. constraint. In this paper, SSC is formulated as a semidefinite programming (SDP) problem. In order to solve the high computational complexity of SDP, we present a dual algorithm based on the Lagrange dual formalization. Two versions of the proposed algorithm are proffered: one with less memory usage and the other with faster convergence rate. The proposed algorithm has much lower time complexity than that of the standard interior-point based SDP solvers. Experimental results on both UCI data sets and real-world image data sets demonstrate that 1) compared with the state-of-the-art spectral clustering methods, the proposed algorithm achieves better clustering performance; and 2) our algorithm is much more efficient and can solve larger-scale SSC problems than those standard interior-point SDP solvers.

A thermodynamically consistent quasi-particle model without density-dependent infinity of the vacuum zero point energy

In this paper, we generalize the improved quasi-particle model proposed in J. Cao et al., [ Phys. Lett. B {\bf711}, 65 (2012)] from finite temperature and zero chemical potential to the case of finite chemical potential and zero temperature, and calculate the equation of state (EOS) for (2+1) flavor Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) at zero temperature and high density. We first calculate the partition function at finite temperature and chemical potential, then go to the limit $T=0$ and obtain the equation of state (EOS) for cold and dense QCD, which is important for the study of neutron stars. Furthermore, we use this EOS to calculate the quark-number density, the energy density, the quark-number susceptibility and the speed of sound at zero temperature and finite chemical potential and compare our results with the corresponding ones in the existing literature.

Measurement-based direct quantum feedback control in an open quantum system

We consider a general quantum system interacting with a bath and derive a master equation in the Lindblad form describing the evolution of the whole quantum system subjected to a measurement-based direct quantum feedback control (MDFC). As an example, we consider a qubit coupled with a dephasing environment under the MDFC. We show that for any given pure target state we can always find the corresponding MDFC scheme which can effectively drive any initial state into this target state. And by using appropriate MDFC scheme with weak measurement we can stabilize a single qubit initially prepared in one of two nonorthogonal states against dephasing noise. Furthermore, we can effectively protect a kind of known mixed states composed of two nonorthogonal states by using the corresponding MDFC scheme.

Connecting neutron star observations to the high density equation of state of quasi-particle model

The observation of $1.97\pm0.04$ solar-mass neutron-like star gives constraint on the equation of state (EOS) of cold, condensed matter. In this paper, the EOS for both pure quark star and hybrid star with a quark core described by quasi-particle model are considered. The parameters of quasi-particle model which affect the mass of both quark star and hybrid star can be constrained by the observation.

Modeling Multiple Annotator Expertise in the Semi-Supervised Learning Scenario

Learning algorithms normally assume that there is at most one annotation or label per data point. However, in some scenarios, such as medical diagnosis and on-line collaboration, multiple annotations may be available. In either case, obtaining labels for data points can be expensive and time-consuming (in some circumstances ground-truth may not exist). Semi-supervised learning approaches have shown that utilizing the unlabeled data is often beneficial in these cases. This paper presents a probabilistic semi-supervised model and algorithm that allows for learning from both unlabeled and labeled data in the presence of multiple annotators. We assume that it is known what annotator labeled which data points. The proposed approach produces annotator models that allow us to provide (1) estimates of the true label and (2) annotator variable expertise for both labeled and unlabeled data. We provide numerical comparisons under various scenarios and with respect to standard semi-supervised learning. Experiments showed that the presented approach provides clear advantages over multi-annotator methods that do not use the unlabeled data and over methods that do not use multi-labeler information.

On-chip two-octave supercontinuum generation by enhancing self-steepening of optical pulses

Dramatic advances in supercontinuum generation have been made recently using photonic crystal fibers, but it is quite challenging to obtain an octave-spanning supercontinuum on a chip, partially because of strong dispersion in high-index-contrast nonlinear integrated waveguides. We show by simulation that extremely flat and low dispersion can be achieved in silicon nitride slot waveguides over a wavelength band of 500 nm. Different from previously reported supercontinua that were generated either by higher-order soliton fission in anomalous dispersion regime or by self phase modulation in normal dispersion regime, a two-octave supercontinuum from 630 to 2650 nm (360 THz in total) can be generated by greatly enhancing self-steepening in nonlinear pulse propagation in almost zero dispersion regime, when an optical shock as short as 3 fs is formed, which enables on-chip ultra-wide-band applications.
