From Location Phrases to Geographic Entities: Task-Adapted Retrieval for People Search

People search must map free-form location phrases to geographic entities used as structured retrieval filters. Lexical standardizers handle canonical names well but are brittle to aliases, misspellings, metropolitan expressions, and same-name ambiguity. We formulate this task as graded, set-valued entity retrieval over a fixed ontology. We identify three coupled design requirements: distinguishing identity-preserving variation from knowledge-dependent aliases, controlling false negatives among valid same-name entities, and separating stable transformations from mutable entity knowledge. We realize them in a prompt-asymmetric bi-encoder with calibrated alias support, bounded ambiguity-aware negatives, and editable entity documents that support localized updates without retraining. Across a fixed production-derived development benchmark and a public GeoNames transfer task, task adaptation improves substantially over frozen encoders and standard token baselines. Controlled development ablations show that specialized supervision contributes beyond standard task fine-tuning and encoder scaling. On GeoNames, the adapted model improves known-target Recall@1 throughout zero-to-moderate character overlap, while character n-grams retain a small aggregate Target Recall@5 advantage. In a blinded human comparison on a stratified production challenge set, our model raises relevant P@1 from 28.0% to 46.0% (p=0.012). Fixed-query endpoint estimates improve on non-canonical queries and remain close to control on frequent queries; a randomized live experiment detects no engagement regression. These results support task-adapted geographic entity retrieval as a practical replacement for the incumbent taxonomy-based standardizer, with the largest relevance gains on non-canonical queries.

Efficient GPU Retrieval for Semantic Search

Semantic Search on LinkedIn must retrieve relevant profiles from a corpus of hundreds of millions in response to natural-language queries such as "a fintech founder in Berlin who worked in payments." The deployed relevance policy is bottleneck-oriented: every active non-negotiable facet must be satisfied, and a pre-existing LLM Graded Relevance (GR) judge operationalizes this through a fixed min/median aggregation over facet grades. Cosine similarity instead averages evidence, letting a strong match on one facet mask failure on another, capping the recall of the first-stage (L0) retriever. We present a policy-aligned retrieval framework: embeddings are partitioned into eight category-supervised segments whose scores follow the same min/median rule at serving time; for multi-vector retrieval, this segment score is computed independently per tagged document slot and maximized across slots. A lightweight single-slot Stage-1 scorer generates high-recall candidates, while scale-invariant relative-norm gating keeps category activation consistent across training, evaluation, and serving. On 21K held-out queries, this representation improves offline relevance over a matched-capacity baseline, with gains broadly distributed across facet combinations. We serve this framework with a two-stage GPU architecture: an FP8 coarse ranker scores the full corpus, increasing per-shard capacity by 71% and Stage-1 matmul throughput by 36%, then an FP16 stage exactly re-ranks an oversampled candidate set, recovering 99.6-99.8% of full-FP16 recall at over 500 QPS per shard replica. In a member-randomized A/B test, exploratory-query Precision@10 under the unchanged GR judge rises from 63.7% to 79.0% and navigational Precision@1 from 65.5% to 74.7%, with a blinded human evaluation independently confirming the Precision@10 gain.

Spontaneous translation of charged droplets during evaporation on dry surfaces

Evaporating sessile droplets are usually treated as capillary objects, but droplets generated by routine handling can carry tens to hundreds of picocoulombs of electric charge. Here we combine Faraday-cup charge measurements with optical imaging to determine how such charge evolves as water droplets evaporate on dry polymer substrates. A zero-time protocol shows that a reproducible initial charge is preserved on poly(methylpentene) (PMP), whereas PDMS, SOCAL-coated surfaces, and polystyrene either exchange, dissipate, or inject charge on contact. On PMP, ensemble-resolved measurements reveal two regimes: the charge remains nearly constant during early evaporation and then decreases abruptly once the droplet reaches a small-volume state. This charge collapse coincides with spontaneous lateral translation rather than jetting or breakup. A Rayleigh-normalized analysis, including a spherical-cap stress correction and measured contact-angle retention scale, shows that motion occurs only after evaporation drives the droplet into a high electro-pinning state. High-speed imaging and kinematic analysis support a picture in which the subsequent motion is governed by repeated contact-line depinning and re-pinning: the total distance traveled is strongly affected by dry-surface pinning, whereas the peak translational velocity serves as a more robust indicator of the discharge strength. These results identify a dry-substrate mode of evaporation-driven electrostatic relaxation, distinct from Coulomb fission on lubricated surfaces, in which substrate electrostatic passivity enables charge retention, droplet geometry selects the instability onset, and whole-droplet translation provides the charge-release pathway.

A Dual-Dip Heterogeneous LPFG Sensing System via Annealing under Bending with Temperature and Humidity Compensation

Optical fiber multi parameter sensing is fundamentally constrained by cross-sensitivity and the complexity of multi sensor integration. Here, we present a dual-dip heterogeneous long-period fiber grating (LPFG) sensing platform enabled by bending assisted annealing, which introduces anisotropic refractive index redistribution and mode dependent coupling enhancement. This process yields enhanced sensitivity, improved dip contrast, and opposite spectral responses between dual resonance dips, providing intrinsic spectral heterogeneity. To overcome temperature cross sensitivity, a polymer-encapsulated cascaded LPFG-FBG architecture is developed, where the LPFG serves as the microbending sensitive element and the FBG acts as a reference channel. PDMS encapsulation enhances stress transfer and suppresses interfacial slippage, improving linearity and repeatability. As a result, the bending sensitivity increases from -3.44 to -8.97 nm per cm, and the detection limit improves from 0.017 to 0.006 cm. Building on this, a multi parameter sensing paradigm is established by integrating dual dip heterogeneity with LPFGFBG spectral orthogonality. With PAAm functionalization, the platform enables simultaneous and decoupled sensing of temperature, bending, and humidity, demonstrating scalable and versatile multi parameter capability. Overall, this work establishes a minimalistic yet robust paradigm for multi-parameter fiber-optic sensing, offering a scalable strategy for high-performance sensing in structural health monitoring and harsh environments.

Level-rank dualities and moving vectors

Duality relations between Lie algebras are a significant phenomenon in Lie algebra representation theory, with level-rank duality as a famous example. Level-rank dualities for affine Lie algebras of type $A^{(1)}$ were first discovered by Frenkel in 1982, and later extended to all classical non-twisted affine types by Hasegawa in 1989 through elaborate character calculations. In this paper, for all classical affine Lie algebras, we construct appropriate Fock spaces in a uniform way and establish corresponding combinatorial models (Maya diagrams and abaci), extending Uglov map to all classcial affine types. Through the action of the Virasoro algebra, we completely characterize the joint highest weight vectors in the Fock space, thereby obtaining the corresponding level-rank duality theory. Our method no longer relies on character calculations. Using this new level-rank duality theory, the defect of the cyclotomic KLR algebra $\mathscr{R}^{\Lambda}_{\beta}$ of classical affine type can be interpreted as the sum of the components of the correponding moving vector.

Core abaci and Diophantine equations I: fundamental weight

In the light of a series of papers on moving vectors, we define and study core abaci of classical affine types for arbitrary charge. This greatly extends the concept of cores with charge zero, and make us being able to parameterize the affine Grassmannian $W^j$ by core abaci of charge $j$ for arbitrary classical affine types. By associating a core abacus $(\lam, j)$ to a weight $\Lambda_j-\beta$ and an affine Weyl group element $w_{\lam, j}$, we prove that the height of $\beta$ is equal to the atomic length of $w_{\lam, j}$. This solves a generalized version of the open problem raised by Brunat, Chapelier-Laget and Gerber. Moreover, Diophantine equations of classical affine types are established by using the height formula that given by Uglov vector. The solutions of certain classes of these Diophantine equations are proved to be completely parameterised by core abaci. As another application, closed formulae for computing the number of certain kinds of core abaci are given.

Semantic Search At LinkedIn

Semantic search with large language models (LLMs) enables retrieval by meaning rather than keyword overlap, but scaling it requires major inference efficiency advances. We present LinkedIn's LLM-based semantic search framework for AI Job Search and AI People Search, combining an LLM relevance judge, embedding-based retrieval, and a compact Small Language Model trained via multi-teacher distillation to jointly optimize relevance and engagement. A prefill-oriented inference architecture co-designed with model pruning, context compression, and text-embedding hybrid interactions boosts ranking throughput by over 75x under a fixed latency constraint while preserving near-teacher-level NDCG, enabling one of the first production LLM-based ranking systems with efficiency comparable to traditional approaches and delivering significant gains in quality and user engagement.

Multi parameter discrimination using multiple spectral troughs in a cascaded fiber sensor

Accurate monitoring of temperature, axial strain, and refractive index is critical for structural health monitoring, industrial process control, and environmental sensing. However, conventional optical fiber sensors are often limited by strong parameter cross sensitivity, poor discrimination capability, and increased system complexity when multiple sensing units are required. In this work, a compact multi-parameter optical fiber sensing platform is proposed based on a cascaded single-mode fiber, multimode fiber, and long-period fiber grating structure, combined with a wavelength-based spectral demodulation strategy. Within the cascaded configuration, multiple characteristic spectral troughs arising from distinct physical mechanisms coexist in a single transmission spectrum. Interference-induced troughs are generated by the multimode fiber section, while a resonance-induced trough is introduced by the long-period fiber grating. Although none of these troughs responds exclusively to a single parameter, each exhibits simultaneous and linearly independent responses to temperature, axial strain, and refractive index with distinct sensitivity magnitudes and trends. Consequently, each trough can be described by a unique sensitivity vector, enabling robust multi-parameter discrimination through multi-wavelength spectral demodulation.

Multi-objective control strategy of Electro-Mechanical Transmission Based on Driving Pattern Division

Based on the driving requirement and power balance of heavy-duty vehicle equipped with Electro-Mechanical Transmission (EMT), optimization goals under different driving patterns are put forward. The optimization objectives are changed into a comprehensive optimization target based on the method of weighting, which is calculated by using analytic hierarchy process (AHP) under different working conditions. According to theory of Dynamic Programming (DP), a multi-object control strategy of DP under different driving patterns is proposed. This strategy is verified by simulation and contrasted with rule strategy, the results show that comprehensive performance is significantly enhanced, and the fuel economy is highly improved especially.

Moving vectors and core blocks of Ariki-Koike algebras

We classify the core blocks of Ariki-Koike algebras by their moving vectors. Using this classification, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for Scopes equivalence between two core blocks, and express the number of simple modules lying in a core block as a classical Kostka number. Under certain conditions on the multicharge and moving vector, we further relate the graded decomposition numbers of these blocks in characteristic zero with the graded decomposition numbers of the Iwahori-Hecke algebras of type $A$.

Cores and weights of multipartitions and blocks of Ariki-Koike algebras

Let $e$ be an integer at least two. We define the $e$-core and the $e$-weight of a multipartition associated with a multicharge as the $e$-core and the $e$-weight of its image under the Uglov map. We do not place any restriction on the multicharge for these definitions. We show how these definitions lead to the definition of the $e$-core and the $e$-weight of a block of an Ariki-Koike algebra with quantum parameter $e$, and an analogue of Nakayama's `Conjecture' that classifies these blocks. Our definition of $e$-weight of such a block coincides with that first defined by Fayers. We further generalise the notion of a $[w:k]$-pair for Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type $A$ to the Ariki-Koike algebras, and obtain a sufficient condition for such a pair to be Scopes equivalent.

Derivations and Hochschild cohomology of zigzag algebras

Let $Γ$ be a connected graph without loops, cycles or multiple edges and $Z(Γ)$ the corresponding zigzag algebra. Then every Jordan derivation of $Z(Γ)$ is a derivation. Moreover, we will prove that the dimension of 1th Hochschild cohomology group of $Z(Γ)$ is one by computing the dimensions of linear spaces spanned by derivations and inner derivations. This implies that the dimension of the 1th Hochschild cohomology group of each algebra derived equivalent to a zigzag algebra is 1.

Semisimplicity of affine cellular algebras

In this note, we prove that an affine cellular algebra $A$ is semisimple if and only if the scheme associated to $A$ is reduced and 0-dimensional, and the bilinear forms with respect to all layers of $A$ are isomorphisms. Moreover, if the ground ring is a perfect field, then $A$ is semisimple if and only if it is separable. We also give a sufficient condition for an affine cellular algebra being Jacobson semisimple.

Moving vectors I: Representation type of blocks of Ariki-Koike algebras

We introduce a new invariant for blocks of Ariki-Koike algebras, called block moving vector, which is a vector of non-negative integers summing up to the weight of the block. In this paper, we use moving vectors to classify representation-finite blocks of Ariki-Koike algebras. As applications, we obtain examples of blocks with the same weight associated with the same multicharge that are not derived equivalent and examples of derived equivalent blocks being in different orbits under the adjoint action of the affine Weyl group. We also determine the representation type for blocks of cyclotomic $q$-Schur algebras.

Thin-Film Lithium Niobate based Dual-Polarization IQ modulator for Single-Carrier 1.6 Tb/s Transmission

We successfully demonstrate a monolithic integrated dual-polarization (DP) IQ modulator based on thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) platform with a silicon substrate, which consists of IQ modulators, spot-size converters (SSCs) and a polarization rotator combiner (PRC). After coupled with polarization maintaining fibers, the measured insertion loss of the modulator is 12 dB. In addition, we experimentally achieve a single-carrier 1.6 Tb/s net bitrate transmission.

We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a type D Temperley-Lieb algebra ${\rm TLD}_n(δ)$ being semi-simple by studying branching rule for cell modules. As a byproduct, our result is used to study the so-called forked Temperley-Lieb algebra, which is a quotient algebra of ${\rm TLD}_n(δ)$.

K-Commuting Mappings of Generalized Matrix Algebras

In this paper we will study $k$-commuting mappings of generalized matrix algebras. The general form of arbitrary $k$-commuting mapping of a generalized matrix algebra is determined. It is shown that under mild assumptions, every $k$-commuting mapping of a generalized matrix algebra takes a certain form which is said to be proper. A number of applications related to $k$-commuting mappings are presented. These results extend the existing works of Cheung, Du and Wang \cite{Cheung2, DuWang1} to the case of generalized matrix
