Superluminal spacetime boundary, time reflection and quantum light generation from relativistic plasma mirrors

A plasma mirror is an optical device for high-power, ultrashort-wavelength electromagnetic fields, utilizing a sheet of relativistic oscillating electrons to generate and manipulate light. In this work, we propose that the spatiotemporally varying plasma oscillation, induced by an ultra-high-intensity laser beam, functions as a "spacetime mirror" with significant potential for exploring quantum light. We find that the spacetime mirror exhibits several exotic features: (i) a superluminal spacetime boundary, (ii) time reflection and refraction, and (iii) quantum light sources with pair generation. Our theoretical and simulation results are in excellent agreement, and experimental verification is underway. Our work demonstrates the interplay with emerging fields such as time varying media, suggesting the plasma mirror as an ideal platform to study strong-field quantum optics at extremes.

Grounding 3D Scene Affordance From Egocentric Interactions

Grounding 3D scene affordance aims to locate interactive regions in 3D environments, which is crucial for embodied agents to interact intelligently with their surroundings. Most existing approaches achieve this by mapping semantics to 3D instances based on static geometric structure and visual appearance. This passive strategy limits the agent's ability to actively perceive and engage with the environment, making it reliant on predefined semantic instructions. In contrast, humans develop complex interaction skills by observing and imitating how others interact with their surroundings. To empower the model with such abilities, we introduce a novel task: grounding 3D scene affordance from egocentric interactions, where the goal is to identify the corresponding affordance regions in a 3D scene based on an egocentric video of an interaction. This task faces the challenges of spatial complexity and alignment complexity across multiple sources. To address these challenges, we propose the Egocentric Interaction-driven 3D Scene Affordance Grounding (Ego-SAG) framework, which utilizes interaction intent to guide the model in focusing on interaction-relevant sub-regions and aligns affordance features from different sources through a bidirectional query decoder mechanism. Furthermore, we introduce the Egocentric Video-3D Scene Affordance Dataset (VSAD), covering a wide range of common interaction types and diverse 3D environments to support this task. Extensive experiments on VSAD validate both the feasibility of the proposed task and the effectiveness of our approach.

Integrated Distributed Semantic Communication and Over-the-air Computation for Cooperative Spectrum Sensing

Cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS) is a promising approach to improve the detection of primary users (PUs) using multiple sensors. However, there are several challenges for existing combination methods, i.e., performance degradation and ceiling effect for hard-decision fusion (HDF), as well as significant uploading latency and non-robustness to noise in the reporting channel for soft-data fusion (SDF). To address these issues, an integrated communication and computation (ICC) framework is proposed in this paper. Specifically, distributed semantic communication (DSC) jointly optimizes multiple sensors and the fusion center to minimize the transmitted data without degrading detection performance. Moreover, over-the-air computation (AirComp) is utilized to further reduce spectrum occupation in reporting channel, taking advantage of characteristics of wireless channel to enable data aggregation. Under the ICC framework, a particular system, namely ICC-CSS, is designed and implemented, which is theoretically proved to be equivalent to the optimal estimator-correlator (E-C) detector with equal gain SDF when the PU signal samples are independent and identically distributed. Extensive simulations verify the superiority of ICC-CSS compared with various conventional CSS schemes in terms of detection performance, robustness to SNR variations in both sensing and reporting channels, as well as scalability with respect to the number of samples and sensors.

PreCurious: How Innocent Pre-Trained Language Models Turn into Privacy Traps

The pre-training and fine-tuning paradigm has demonstrated its effectiveness and has become the standard approach for tailoring language models to various tasks. Currently, community-based platforms offer easy access to various pre-trained models, as anyone can publish without strict validation processes. However, a released pre-trained model can be a privacy trap for fine-tuning datasets if it is carefully designed. In this work, we propose PreCurious framework to reveal the new attack surface where the attacker releases the pre-trained model and gets a black-box access to the final fine-tuned model. PreCurious aims to escalate the general privacy risk of both membership inference and data extraction on the fine-tuning dataset. The key intuition behind PreCurious is to manipulate the memorization stage of the pre-trained model and guide fine-tuning with a seemingly legitimate configuration. While empirical and theoretical evidence suggests that parameter-efficient and differentially private fine-tuning techniques can defend against privacy attacks on a fine-tuned model, PreCurious demonstrates the possibility of breaking up this invulnerability in a stealthy manner compared to fine-tuning on a benign pre-trained model. While DP provides some mitigation for membership inference attack, by further leveraging a sanitized dataset, PreCurious demonstrates potential vulnerabilities for targeted data extraction even under differentially private tuning with a strict privacy budget e.g. $ε=0.05$. Thus, PreCurious raises warnings for users on the potential risks of downloading pre-trained models from unknown sources, relying solely on tutorials or common-sense defenses, and releasing sanitized datasets even after perfect scrubbing.

Benchmarking General-Purpose In-Context Learning

In-context learning (ICL) empowers generative models to address new tasks effectively and efficiently on the fly, without relying on any artificially crafted optimization techniques. In this paper, we study extending ICL to address a broader range of tasks with an extended learning horizon and higher improvement potential, namely General Purpose In-Context Learning (GPICL). To this end, we introduce two lightweight benchmarks specifically crafted to train and evaluate GPICL functionalities. Each benchmark encompasses a vast number of tasks characterized by significant task variance. These tasks are also crafted to promote long-horizon in-context learning through continuous generation and interaction, covering domains such as language modeling, decision-making, and world modeling. The benchmarks necessitate the models to leverage contexts and history interactions to enhance their capabilities, which we believe to be the key characteristics of GPICL. Our experiments indicate that the diversity of training tasks is positively correlated with the ability to generalize with ICL, but inversely correlated with zero-shot capabilities. Additionally, our findings indicate that the scale of parameters alone may not be crucial for ICL or GPICL, suggesting alternative approaches such as increasing the scale of contexts and memory states.

Improving Virtual Try-On with Garment-focused Diffusion Models

Diffusion models have led to the revolutionizing of generative modeling in numerous image synthesis tasks. Nevertheless, it is not trivial to directly apply diffusion models for synthesizing an image of a target person wearing a given in-shop garment, i.e., image-based virtual try-on (VTON) task. The difficulty originates from the aspect that the diffusion process should not only produce holistically high-fidelity photorealistic image of the target person, but also locally preserve every appearance and texture detail of the given garment. To address this, we shape a new Diffusion model, namely GarDiff, which triggers the garment-focused diffusion process with amplified guidance of both basic visual appearance and detailed textures (i.e., high-frequency details) derived from the given garment. GarDiff first remoulds a pre-trained latent diffusion model with additional appearance priors derived from the CLIP and VAE encodings of the reference garment. Meanwhile, a novel garment-focused adapter is integrated into the UNet of diffusion model, pursuing local fine-grained alignment with the visual appearance of reference garment and human pose. We specifically design an appearance loss over the synthesized garment to enhance the crucial, high-frequency details. Extensive experiments on VITON-HD and DressCode datasets demonstrate the superiority of our GarDiff when compared to state-of-the-art VTON approaches. Code is publicly available at: \href{https://github.com/siqi0905/GarDiff/tree/master}{https://github.com/siqi0905/GarDiff/tree/master}.

UNIT: Unifying Image and Text Recognition in One Vision Encoder

Currently, vision encoder models like Vision Transformers (ViTs) typically excel at image recognition tasks but cannot simultaneously support text recognition like human visual recognition. To address this limitation, we propose UNIT, a novel training framework aimed at UNifying Image and Text recognition within a single model. Starting with a vision encoder pre-trained with image recognition tasks, UNIT introduces a lightweight language decoder for predicting text outputs and a lightweight vision decoder to prevent catastrophic forgetting of the original image encoding capabilities. The training process comprises two stages: intra-scale pretraining and inter-scale finetuning. During intra-scale pretraining, UNIT learns unified representations from multi-scale inputs, where images and documents are at their commonly used resolution, to enable fundamental recognition capability. In the inter-scale finetuning stage, the model introduces scale-exchanged data, featuring images and documents at resolutions different from the most commonly used ones, to enhance its scale robustness. Notably, UNIT retains the original vision encoder architecture, making it cost-free in terms of inference and deployment. Experiments across multiple benchmarks confirm that our method significantly outperforms existing methods on document-related tasks (e.g., OCR and DocQA) while maintaining the performances on natural images, demonstrating its ability to substantially enhance text recognition without compromising its core image recognition capabilities.

3D-printed terahertz subwavelength dual-core fibers with dense channel-integration

Terahertz (THz) fiber that provides high-speed connections is an essential component in THz communication systems. The emerging space-division-multiplexing technology is expected to increase the transmission capacity of THz communications. A promising candidate to achieve that is integrating multiple channels in a compact THz multi-core fiber system. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a THz subwavelength rectangular dielectric dual-core fiber structure, where two identical cores can be densely integrated, thanks to the polarization-maintaining feature of the rectangular fiber. Different configurations, including the placements, core-spacings, and polarization states of two fiber cores, are comprehensively investigated to improve channel isolation. Numerical simulations show that the fractional power in core of fiber mode has a dominant effect on inter-core coupling performance. Moreover, we design the core size (1 mm x 0.5 mm) slightly less than the WR5.1 waveguide (1.295 mm x 0.6475 mm) so that the fiber can be conveniently connected with the WR5.1 flange port with mode excitation efficiencies up to 62.8%. A cost-efficient dielectric 3D printing technique is employed for rapid fabrications of dual-core fibers and corresponding polymer flange structures that offer solid integration between the fiber samples and the WR5.1 port. Experimental measurements demonstrate that a 4-mm core-spacing (less than three times the operation wavelengths over 0.17-0.21 THz) supports robust dual-channel propagation with channel isolation values more than 15 dB, which are consistent with theoretical and numerical results. This work provides a densely integrated dual-core fiber system with low fabrication cost and practical connection to the WR5.1 flange, holding exciting potential for high-capacity THz space-division-multiplexing communication systems.

PEAR: Phrase-Based Hand-Object Interaction Anticipation

First-person hand-object interaction anticipation aims to predict the interaction process over a forthcoming period based on current scenes and prompts. This capability is crucial for embodied intelligence and human-robot collaboration. The complete interaction process involves both pre-contact interaction intention (i.e., hand motion trends and interaction hotspots) and post-contact interaction manipulation (i.e., manipulation trajectories and hand poses with contact). Existing research typically anticipates only interaction intention while neglecting manipulation, resulting in incomplete predictions and an increased likelihood of intention errors due to the lack of manipulation constraints. To address this, we propose a novel model, PEAR (Phrase-Based Hand-Object Interaction Anticipation), which jointly anticipates interaction intention and manipulation. To handle uncertainties in the interaction process, we employ a twofold approach. Firstly, we perform cross-alignment of verbs, nouns, and images to reduce the diversity of hand movement patterns and object functional attributes, thereby mitigating intention uncertainty. Secondly, we establish bidirectional constraints between intention and manipulation using dynamic integration and residual connections, ensuring consistency among elements and thus overcoming manipulation uncertainty. To rigorously evaluate the performance of the proposed model, we collect a new task-relevant dataset, EGO-HOIP, with comprehensive annotations. Extensive experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our method.

HRNet: Differentially Private Hierarchical and Multi-Resolution Network for Human Mobility Data Synthesization

Human mobility data offers valuable insights for many applications such as urban planning and pandemic response, but its use also raises privacy concerns. In this paper, we introduce the Hierarchical and Multi-Resolution Network (HRNet), a novel deep generative model specifically designed to synthesize realistic human mobility data while guaranteeing differential privacy. We first identify the key difficulties inherent in learning human mobility data under differential privacy. In response to these challenges, HRNet integrates three components: a hierarchical location encoding mechanism, multi-task learning across multiple resolutions, and private pre-training. These elements collectively enhance the model's ability under the constraints of differential privacy. Through extensive comparative experiments utilizing a real-world dataset, HRNet demonstrates a marked improvement over existing methods in balancing the utility-privacy trade-off.

Enhancing Privacy of Spatiotemporal Federated Learning against Gradient Inversion Attacks

Spatiotemporal federated learning has recently raised intensive studies due to its ability to train valuable models with only shared gradients in various location-based services. On the other hand, recent studies have shown that shared gradients may be subject to gradient inversion attacks (GIA) on images or texts. However, so far there has not been any systematic study of the gradient inversion attacks in spatiotemporal federated learning. In this paper, we explore the gradient attack problem in spatiotemporal federated learning from attack and defense perspectives. To understand privacy risks in spatiotemporal federated learning, we first propose Spatiotemporal Gradient Inversion Attack (ST-GIA), a gradient attack algorithm tailored to spatiotemporal data that successfully reconstructs the original location from gradients. Furthermore, we design an adaptive defense strategy to mitigate gradient inversion attacks in spatiotemporal federated learning. By dynamically adjusting the perturbation levels, we can offer tailored protection for varying rounds of training data, thereby achieving a better trade-off between privacy and utility than current state-of-the-art methods. Through intensive experimental analysis on three real-world datasets, we reveal that the proposed defense strategy can well preserve the utility of spatiotemporal federated learning with effective security protection.

The Ninth NTIRE 2024 Efficient Super-Resolution Challenge Report

This paper provides a comprehensive review of the NTIRE 2024 challenge, focusing on efficient single-image super-resolution (ESR) solutions and their outcomes. The task of this challenge is to super-resolve an input image with a magnification factor of x4 based on pairs of low and corresponding high-resolution images. The primary objective is to develop networks that optimize various aspects such as runtime, parameters, and FLOPs, while still maintaining a peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of approximately 26.90 dB on the DIV2K_LSDIR_valid dataset and 26.99 dB on the DIV2K_LSDIR_test dataset. In addition, this challenge has 4 tracks including the main track (overall performance), sub-track 1 (runtime), sub-track 2 (FLOPs), and sub-track 3 (parameters). In the main track, all three metrics (ie runtime, FLOPs, and parameter count) were considered. The ranking of the main track is calculated based on a weighted sum-up of the scores of all other sub-tracks. In sub-track 1, the practical runtime performance of the submissions was evaluated, and the corresponding score was used to determine the ranking. In sub-track 2, the number of FLOPs was considered. The score calculated based on the corresponding FLOPs was used to determine the ranking. In sub-track 3, the number of parameters was considered. The score calculated based on the corresponding parameters was used to determine the ranking. RLFN is set as the baseline for efficiency measurement. The challenge had 262 registered participants, and 34 teams made valid submissions. They gauge the state-of-the-art in efficient single-image super-resolution. To facilitate the reproducibility of the challenge and enable other researchers to build upon these findings, the code and the pre-trained model of validated solutions are made publicly available at https://github.com/Amazingren/NTIRE2024_ESR/.

TabularMark: Watermarking Tabular Datasets for Machine Learning

Watermarking is broadly utilized to protect ownership of shared data while preserving data utility. However, existing watermarking methods for tabular datasets fall short on the desired properties (detectability, non-intrusiveness, and robustness) and only preserve data utility from the perspective of data statistics, ignoring the performance of downstream ML models trained on the datasets. Can we watermark tabular datasets without significantly compromising their utility for training ML models while preventing attackers from training usable ML models on attacked datasets? In this paper, we propose a hypothesis testing-based watermarking scheme, TabularMark. Data noise partitioning is utilized for data perturbation during embedding, which is adaptable for numerical and categorical attributes while preserving the data utility. For detection, a custom-threshold one proportion z-test is employed, which can reliably determine the presence of the watermark. Experiments on real-world and synthetic datasets demonstrate the superiority of TabularMark in detectability, non-intrusiveness, and robustness.

FC3DNet: A Fully Connected Encoder-Decoder for Efficient Demoir'eing

Moiré patterns are commonly seen when taking photos of screens. Camera devices usually have limited hardware performance but take high-resolution photos. However, users are sensitive to the photo processing time, which presents a hardly considered challenge of efficiency for demoiréing methods. To balance the network speed and quality of results, we propose a \textbf{F}ully \textbf{C}onnected en\textbf{C}oder-de\textbf{C}oder based \textbf{D}emoiréing \textbf{Net}work (FC3DNet). FC3DNet utilizes features with multiple scales in each stage of the decoder for comprehensive information, which contains long-range patterns as well as various local moiré styles that both are crucial aspects in demoiréing. Besides, to make full use of multiple features, we design a Multi-Feature Multi-Attention Fusion (MFMAF) module to weigh the importance of each feature and compress them for efficiency. These designs enable our network to achieve performance comparable to state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods in real-world datasets while utilizing only a fraction of parameters, FLOPs, and runtime.

ULDP-FL: Federated Learning with Across Silo User-Level Differential Privacy

Differentially Private Federated Learning (DP-FL) has garnered attention as a collaborative machine learning approach that ensures formal privacy. Most DP-FL approaches ensure DP at the record-level within each silo for cross-silo FL. However, a single user's data may extend across multiple silos, and the desired user-level DP guarantee for such a setting remains unknown. In this study, we present Uldp-FL, a novel FL framework designed to guarantee user-level DP in cross-silo FL where a single user's data may belong to multiple silos. Our proposed algorithm directly ensures user-level DP through per-user weighted clipping, departing from group-privacy approaches. We provide a theoretical analysis of the algorithm's privacy and utility. Additionally, we enhance the utility of the proposed algorithm with an enhanced weighting strategy based on user record distribution and design a novel private protocol that ensures no additional information is revealed to the silos and the server. Experiments on real-world datasets show substantial improvements in our methods in privacy-utility trade-offs under user-level DP compared to baseline methods. To the best of our knowledge, our work is the first FL framework that effectively provides user-level DP in the general cross-silo FL setting.

Dynamic Energy-Saving Design for Double-Faced Active RIS Assisted Communications with Perfect/Imperfect CSI

Although the emerging reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) paves a new way for next-generation wireless communications, it suffers from inherent flaws, i.e., double-fading attenuation effects and half-space coverage limitations. The state-of-the-art double-face active (DFA)-RIS architecture is proposed for significantly amplifying and transmitting incident signals in full-space. Despite the efficacy of DFA-RIS in mitigating the aforementioned flaws, its potential drawback is that the complex active hardware also incurs intolerable energy consumption. To overcome this drawback, in this paper we propose a novel dynamic energy-saving design for the DFA-RIS, called the sub-array based DFA-RIS architecture. This architecture divides the DFA-RIS into multiple sub-arrays, where the signal amplification function in each sub-array can be activated/deactivated dynamically and flexibly. Utilizing the above architecture, we develop the joint optimization scheme based on transmit beamforming, DFA-RIS configuration, and reflection amplifier (RA) operating pattern to maximize the energy efficiency (EE) of the DFA-RIS assisted multiuser MISO system considering the perfect/imperfect channel state information (CSI) case. Then, the penalty dual decomposition (PDD) based alternating optimization (AO) algorithm and the constrained stochastic majorization-minimization (CSMM) based AO algorithm address non-convex problems in the perfect/imperfect CSI case, respectively. Simulation results verified that our proposed sub-array based DFA-RIS architecture can benefit the EE of the system more than other RIS architectures.

Self-Sustainable Active Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces for Anti-Jamming in Wireless Communications

Wireless devices can be easily attacked by jammers during transmission, which is a potential security threat for wireless communications. Active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) attracts considerable attention and is expected to be employed in anti-jamming systems for secure transmission to significantly enhance the anti-jamming performance. However, active RIS introduces external power load, which increases the complexity of hardware and restricts the flexible deployment of active RIS. To overcome these drawbacks, we design a innovative self-sustainable structure in this paper, where the active RIS is energized by harvesting energy from base station (BS) signals through the time dividing based simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (TD-SWIPT) scheme. Based on the above structure, we develop the BS harvesting scheme based on joint transmit and reflecting beamforming with the aim of maximizing the achievable rate of active RIS-assisted system, where the alternating optimization (AO) algorithm based on stochastic successive convex approximation (SSCA) tackles the nonconvex optimization problem in the scheme. Simulation results verified the effectiveness of our developed BS harvesting scheme, which can attain higher anti-jamming performance than other schemes when given the same maximum transmit power.

Large Language Model Assisted Adversarial Robustness Neural Architecture Search

Motivated by the potential of large language models (LLMs) as optimizers for solving combinatorial optimization problems, this paper proposes a novel LLM-assisted optimizer (LLMO) to address adversarial robustness neural architecture search (ARNAS), a specific application of combinatorial optimization. We design the prompt using the standard CRISPE framework (i.e., Capacity and Role, Insight, Statement, Personality, and Experiment). In this study, we employ Gemini, a powerful LLM developed by Google. We iteratively refine the prompt, and the responses from Gemini are adapted as solutions to ARNAS instances. Numerical experiments are conducted on NAS-Bench-201-based ARNAS tasks with CIFAR-10 and CIFAR-100 datasets. Six well-known meta-heuristic algorithms (MHAs) including genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), differential evolution (DE), and its variants serve as baselines. The experimental results confirm the competitiveness of the proposed LLMO and highlight the potential of LLMs as effective combinatorial optimizers.
