XMM-Newton Survey of Local OVII Absorption Lines in the Spectra of Galactic X-ray Sources

The detection of highly ionized metal absorption lines in the X-ray spectra of the Galactic X-ray binaries (XRBs) implies the distribution of hot gas along the sightline toward the background sources. However, the origin of this hot gas is still unclear: it can arise in the hot interstellar medium (ISM), or is intrinsic to the XRBs. In this paper, we present an XMM-Newton survey of the OVII absorption lines in the spectra of Galactic XRBs. A total of 33 XRBs were selected, with 29 low mass XRBs and 4 high mass XRBs. At more than 3$σ$ threshold, OVII absorption line was detected in 16 targets, among which 4 were newly discovered in this work. The average line equivalent width (EW) is centered around $\sim$ 20 mÅ. Additionally we do not find strong correlations between the OVII EWs and the Galactic neutral absorption N$_{\rm H}$, the Galactic coordinates or the distance of background targets. Such non-correlation may suggest the contamination of the circumstellar material, or the lack of constrains on the line Doppler-b parameter. We also find regardless the direction of the XRBs, the OVII absorption lines were always detected when the flux of the background XRBs reach a certain level, suggesting a uniform distribution of this hot gas. We estimate a ratio of 0.004 --- 0.4 between hot and neutral phase of the interstellar medium. This is the second paper in the series following Fang et al. 2015, in which we focused on the local OVII absorption lines detected in the background AGN spectra. Detailed modeling of the hot ISM distribution will be investigated in a future paper.

Android Multi-Level System Permission Management Approach

With the expansion of the market share occupied by the Android platform, security issues (especially application security) have become attention focus of researchers. In fact, the existing methods lack the capabilities to manage application permissions without root privilege. This study proposes a dynamic management mechanism of Android application permissions based on security policies. The paper first describes the permissions by security policies, then implementes permission checking code and request evaluation algorithm in Android framework layer. Experimental results indicate that the presented approach succeeds in permission management of Android applications, and its system overhead is low, which makes it an effective method for Android permission management.

Dielectric Properties of Composites Containing Meltextracted Co-based Microwires

We have investigated the microwave properties of epoxy-based composites containing melt-extracted Co69.25Fe4. 25B13.5-xSi13Nbx (x=0, 1, 3) microwires of various length annealed using a so-called combined current-modulation annealing (CCMA) technique. The observation of a double-peak feature in the permittivity spectra is believed due to the coexistence of the amorphous phase and a small amount of nanocrystallites on the wires with a high Nb content. CCMA was found to be favorable for a better-defined circular anisotropy of microwires and had suppressed the highfrequency peak due to residual stress relief for the composite with 25 mm long wires. Neither the shift of resonance peak nor the characteristic double peak feature was detected for composites containing as-cast 15 or 35 mm long microwires.

Direct Collapse to Supermassive Black Hole Seeds: Comparing the AMR and SPH Approaches

We provide detailed comparison between the AMR code Enzo-2.4 and the SPH/N- body code GADGET-3 in the context of isolated or cosmological direct baryonic collapse within dark matter (DM) halos to form supermassive black holes. Gas flow is examined by following evolution of basic parameters of accretion flows. Both codes show an overall agreement in the general features of the collapse, however, many subtle differences exist. For isolated models, the codes increase their spatial and mass resolutions at different pace, which leads to substantially earlier collapse in SPH than in AMR cases due to higher gravitational resolution in GADGET-3. In cosmological runs, the AMR develops a slightly higher baryonic resolution than SPH during halo growth via cold accretion permeated by mergers. Still, both codes agree in the buildup of DM and baryonic structures. However, with the onset of collapse, this difference in mass and spatial resolution is amplified, so evolution of SPH models begins to lag behind. Such a delay can have effect on formation/destruction rate of H2 due to UV background, and on basic properties of host halos. Finally, isolated non-cosmological models in spinning halos, with spin parameter λ ~ 0.01 - 0.07, show delayed collapse for greater λ, but pace of this increase is faster for AMR. Within our simulation setup, GADGET-3 requires significantly larger computational resources than Enzo- 2.4 during collapse, and needs similar resources, during the pre-collapse, cosmological structure formation phase. Yet it benefits from substantially higher gravitational force and hydrodynamic resolutions, except at the end of collapse.

On the Origin of Highly Ionized X-ray Absorbers Detected in the Galactic X-ray Binaries

X-ray observations of the Galactic X-ray binaries (XRB) revealed numerous highly ionized metal absorption lines. However, it is unclear whether such lines are produced by the hot interstellar medium (ISM) or the circumstellar medium (CSM) intrinsic to the binaries. Here we present a Chandra X-ray absorption line study of 28 observations on 12 X-ray binaries, with a focus on the NeIX and FeXVII lines. We report the first detections of these lines in a significant amount of observations. We do not find significant dependence of the line equivalent width on the distance of the XRBs, but we do see weak dependence on the source X-ray luminosity. We also find two out of twelve selected targets show strong temporal variation of the NeIX absorbers. While the line ratio between the two ion species suggests a temperature consistent with the previous predictions of the ISM, comparing with two theoretical models of the ISM shows the observed column densities are significantly higher than predictions. On the other hand, photoionzation by the XRBs provides reasonably good fit to the data. Our findings suggest that a significant fraction of these X-ray absorbers may originate in the hot gas intrinsic to the X-ray binaries, and that the ISM makes small, if not negligible, contribution. We briefly discuss the implications to the study of the Milky Way hot gas content.

Neutrino-cooled Accretion Model with Magnetic Coupling for X-ray Flares in GRBs

The neutrino-cooled accretion disk, which was proposed to work as the central engine of gamma-ray bursts, encounters difficulty in interpreting the X-ray flares after the prompt gamma-ray emission. In this paper, the magnetic coupling between the inner disk and the central black hole is taken into consideration. For mass accretion rates around $0.001 \sim 0.1 M_{\sun} s^{-1}$, our results show that the luminosity of neutrino annihilation can be significantly enhanced due to the coupling effects. As a consequence, after the gamma-ray emission, a remnant disk with mass $M_{disk} \la 0.5 M_{\sun}$ may power most of the observed X-ray flares with the rest frame duration less than 100 seconds. In addition, a comparison between the magnetic coupling process and the Blandford-Znajek mechanism is shown on the extraction of black hole rotational energy.

Detectable seismic consequences of the interaction of a primordial black hole with Earth

Galaxies observed today are likely to have evolved from density perturbations in the early universe. Perturbations that exceeded some critical threshold are conjectured to have undergone gravitational collapse to form primordial black holes (PBHs) at a range of masses. Such PBHs serve as candidates for cold dark matter and their detection would shed light on conditions in the early universe. Here we propose a mechanism to search for transits of PBHs through/nearby Earth by studying the associated seismic waves. Using a spectral-element method, we simulate and visualize this seismic wave field in Earth's interior. We predict the emergence of two unique signatures, namely, a wave that would arrive almost simultaneously everywhere on Earth's free surface and the excitation of unusual spheroidal modes with a characteristic frequency-spacing in free oscillation spectra. These qualitative characteristics are unaffected by the speed or proximity of the PBH trajectory. The seismic energy deposited by a proximal ${M^{PBH} = 10^{15}}$ g PBH is comparable to a magnitude $M_w=4$ earthquake. The non-seismic collateral damage due to the actual impact of such small PBHs with Earth would be negligible. Unfortunately, the expected collision rate is very low even if PBHs constituted all of dark matter, at ${\sim 10^{-7} {yr}^{-1}}$, and since the rate scales as ${1/M^{PBH}}$, fortunately encounters with larger, Earth-threatening PBHs are exceedingly unlikely. However, the rate at which non-colliding close encounters of PBHs could be detected by seismic activity alone is roughly two orders of magnitude larger --- that is once every hundred thousand years --- than the direct collision rate.
