ISPDiffuser: Learning RAW-to-sRGB Mappings with Texture-Aware Diffusion Models and Histogram-Guided Color Consistency

RAW-to-sRGB mapping, or the simulation of the traditional camera image signal processor (ISP), aims to generate DSLR-quality sRGB images from raw data captured by smartphone sensors. Despite achieving comparable results to sophisticated handcrafted camera ISP solutions, existing learning-based methods still struggle with detail disparity and color distortion. In this paper, we present ISPDiffuser, a diffusion-based decoupled framework that separates the RAW-to-sRGB mapping into detail reconstruction in grayscale space and color consistency mapping from grayscale to sRGB. Specifically, we propose a texture-aware diffusion model that leverages the generative ability of diffusion models to focus on local detail recovery, in which a texture enrichment loss is further proposed to prompt the diffusion model to generate more intricate texture details. Subsequently, we introduce a histogram-guided color consistency module that utilizes color histogram as guidance to learn precise color information for grayscale to sRGB color consistency mapping, with a color consistency loss designed to constrain the learned color information. Extensive experimental results show that the proposed ISPDiffuser outperforms state-of-the-art competitors both quantitatively and visually. Can GPT-4 Help Detect Quit Vaping Intentions? An Exploration of Automatic Data Annotation Approach

In recent years, the United States has witnessed a significant surge in the popularity of vaping or e-cigarette use, leading to a notable rise in cases of e-cigarette and vaping use-associated lung injury (EVALI) that caused hospitalizations and fatalities during the EVALI outbreak in 2019, highlighting the urgency to comprehend vaping behaviors and develop effective strategies for cessation. Due to the ubiquity of social media platforms, over 4.7 billion users worldwide use them for connectivity, communications, news, and entertainment with a significant portion of the discourse related to health, thereby establishing social media data as an invaluable organic data resource for public health research. In this study, we extracted a sample dataset from one vaping sub-community on Reddit to analyze users' quit-vaping intentions. Leveraging OpenAI's latest large language model GPT-4 for sentence-level quit vaping intention detection, this study compares the outcomes of this model against layman and clinical expert annotations. Using different prompting strategies such as zero-shot, one-shot, few-shot and chain-of-thought prompting, we developed 8 prompts with varying levels of detail to explain the task to GPT-4 and also evaluated the performance of the strategies against each other. These preliminary findings emphasize the potential of GPT-4 in social media data analysis, especially in identifying users' subtle intentions that may elude human detection.

Dual-Tap Optical-Digital Feedforward Equalization Enabling High-Speed Optical Transmission in IM/DD Systems

Intensity-modulation and direct-detection (IM/DD) transmission is widely adopted for high-speed optical transmission scenarios due to its cost-effectiveness and simplicity. However, as the data rate increases, the fiber chromatic dispersion (CD) would induce a serious power fading effect, and direct detection could generate inter-symbol interference (ISI). Moreover, the ISI becomes more severe with the increase of fiber length, thereby highly restricting the transmission distance of IM/DD systems. This paper proposes a dual-tap optical-digital feedforward equalization (DT-ODFE) scheme, which could effectively compensate for CD-induced power fading while maintaining low cost and simplicity. A theoretical channel response is formulated for IM/DD transmission, incorporating a dual-tap optical equalizer, and the theoretical analysis reveals that for an IM/DD transmission using 1371nm over 10km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF), frequency notch is removed from 33.7GHz to 46GHz. Simulation results show that the DT- ODFE achieves an SNR gain of 2.3dB over IM/DD systems with symbol-space feedforward equalizer (FFE) alone. As the fiber length increases to 15 km, DT- ODFE performs well, while FFE, decision-feedback equalizer (DFE) and Volterra nonlinear equalizers (VNLE) all fail to compensate for the power fading and the 7% hard-decision FEC limit is not satisfied. For 200 Gb/s/$λ$ PAM-4 over 15km SSMF, results show that the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the proposed DT- ODFE with optimal coefficients satisfies the 7% hard-decision FEC limit, which uncovers the great potential of the DT- ODFE for high-speed IM/DD systems in LR/FR scenarios.

Towards Transaction as a Service

This paper argues for decoupling transaction processing from existing two-layer cloud-native databases and making transaction processing as an independent service. By building a transaction as a service (TaaS) layer, the transaction processing can be independently scaled for high resource utilization and can be independently upgraded for development agility. Accordingly, we architect an execution-transaction-storage three-layer cloud-native database. By connecting to TaaS, 1) the AP engines can be empowered with ACID TP capability, 2) multiple standalone TP engine instances can be incorporated to support multi-master distributed TP for horizontal scalability, 3) multiple execution engines with different data models can be integrated to support multi-model transactions, and 4) high performance TP is achieved through extensive TaaS optimizations and consistent evolution. Cloud-native databases deserve better architecture: we believe that TaaS provides a path forward to better cloud-native databases.

Observation of Flat Band and Van Hove Singularity in Non-superconducting Nitrogen-doped Lutetium Hydride

Hydrogen-rich materials offer a compelling avenue towards room temperature superconductivity, albeit under ultra-high pressure. However, the experimental investigation of the electronic band structure remains elusive, due to the inherent instability of most of the hydrogen-rich materials upon pressure release. Very recently, nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride was claimed to host room temperature superconductivity under near ambient pressure but was disproven by following works. Upon decompression, nitrogen doped lutetium hydride manifests a stable metallic phase with dark blue color. Moreover, high temperature superconductivity has been reported in lutetium hydrides Lu4H23 (~71 K) under around 200 GPa. These properties engender an unprecedented opportunity, allowing for the experimental investigation of the electronic band structure intrinsic to hydrogen-rich material. In this work, using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the non-superconducting nitrogen doped lutetium hydride, we observed significant flat band and Van Hove singularity marginally below the Fermi level. These salient features, identified as critical elements, proffer potential amplifiers for the realization of heightened superconductivity, as evidenced by prior research. Our results not only unveil a confluence of potent strong correlation effects and anisotropy within the Lu-H-N compound, but also provide a prospect for engineering high temperature superconductivity through the strategic manipulation of flat band and the VHS, effectively tailoring their alignment with the Fermi energy.

Evolution of medium-range order and its correlation with magnetic nanodomains in Fe-Dy-B-Nb bulk metallic glasses

Fe-based metallic glasses are promising functional materials for advanced magnetism and sensor fields. Tailoring magnetic performance in amorphous materials requires a thorough knowledge of the correlation between structural disorder and magnetic order, which remains ambiguous. Two practical difficulties remain: the first is directly observing subtle magnetic structural changes on multiple scales, and the second is precisely regulating the various amorphous states. Here we propose a novel approach to tailor the amorphous structure through the liquid liquid phase transition. In-situ synchrotron diffraction has unraveled a medium-range ordering process dominated by edge-sharing cluster connectivity during the liquid-liquid phase transition. Moreover, nanodomains with topological order have been found to exist in composition with liquid-liquid phase transition, manifesting as hexagonal patterns in small-angle neutron scattering profiles. The liquid-liquid phase transition can induce the nanodomains to be more locally ordered, generating stronger exchange interactions due to the reduced Fe-Fe bond and the enhanced structural order, leading to the increment of saturation magnetization. Furthermore, the increased local heterogeneity in the medium range scale enhances the magnetic anisotropy, promoting the permeability response under applied stress and leading to a better stress-impedance effect. These experimental results pave the way to tailor the magnetic structure and performance through the liquid-liquid phase transition.

GeoGauss: Strongly Consistent and Light-Coordinated OLTP for Geo-Replicated SQL Database

Multinational enterprises conduct global business that has a demand for geo-distributed transactional databases. Existing state-of-the-art databases adopt a sharded master-follower replication architecture. However, the single-master serving mode incurs massive cross-region writes from clients, and the sharded architecture requires multiple round-trip acknowledgments (e.g., 2PC) to ensure atomicity for cross-shard transactions. These limitations drive us to seek yet another design choice. In this paper, we propose a strongly consistent OLTP database GeoGauss with full replica multi-master architecture. To efficiently merge the updates from different master nodes, we propose a multi-master OCC that unifies data replication and concurrent transaction processing. By leveraging an epoch-based delta state merge rule and the optimistic asynchronous execution, GeoGauss ensures strong consistency with light-coordinated protocol and allows more concurrency with weak isolation, which are sufficient to meet our needs. Our geo-distributed experimental results show that GeoGauss achieves 7.06X higher throughput and 17.41X lower latency than the state-of-the-art geo-distributed database CockroachDB on the TPC-C benchmark.

In-situ synchrotron based high energy X-ray diffraction study of the deformation mechanism of δ-hydride in a commercially pure titanium

We used by in-situ high energy X-ray diffraction to inestigate the deformation behavior of Grade 2 commercially pure titanium that was hydrogen charged to form hydrides. The results showed that the peak broadening in the diffraction patterns are due to the high internal and interphase stresses generated within and around hydrides due to the volume expansion induced by the phase transformation. The hydrides exhibit typical high strength but brittle secondary phase behavior, which undertakes more elastic strain than matrix and is the location where cracks are first generated. Interestingly, the δ-hydrides sustain larger strains than the matrix, especially after the matrix yields. This study on the deformation mechanism of hydrides in pure titanium provides insight into the hydride deformation behavior and hydrogen embrittlement in both titanium and zirconium.

Ultrafast formation of transient 2D diamond-like structure in twisted bilayer graphene

Due to the absence of matching carbon atoms at honeycomb centers with carbon atoms in adjacent graphene sheets, theorists predicted that a sliding process is needed to form AA, AB, or ABC stacking when directly converting graphite into sp3 bonded diamond. Here, using twisted bilayer graphene, which naturally provides AA and AB stacking configurations, we report the ultrafast formation of a transient 2D diamond-like structure (which is not observed in aligned graphene) under femtosecond laser irradiation. This photo-induced phase transition is evidenced by the appearance of new bond lengths of 1.94A and 3.14A in the time-dependent differential pair distribution function using MeV ultrafast electron diffraction. Molecular dynamics and first principles calculation indicate that sp3 bonds nucleate at AA and AB stacked areas in moire pattern. This work sheds light on the direct graphite-to-diamond transformation mechanism, which has not been fully understood for more than 60 years.

High oxygen pressure floating zone growth and crystal structure of the layered nickelates R$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ (R=La, Pr)

Single crystals of the metallic Ruddlesden-Popper trilayer nickelates R$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ (R=La, Pr) were successfully grown using an optical-image floating zone furnace under oxygen pressure (pO$_2$) of 20 bar for La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ and 140 bar for Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$. A combination of synchrotron and laboratory x-ray single crystal diffraction, high-resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction and measurements of physical properties revealed that R$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ (R=La, Pr) crystallizes in the monoclinic $P$2$_1$/$a$ (Z=2) space group at room temperature, and that a metastable orthorhombic phase ($Bmab$) can be trapped by post-growth rapid cooling. Both La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ and Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ crystals undergo a metal-to-metal transition (MMT) below room temperature. In the case of Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$, the MMT is found at ~157.6 K. For La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$, the MMT depends on the lattice symmetry: 147.5 K for $Bmab$ vs. 138.6 K for $P$2$_1$/$a$. Lattice anomalies were found at the MMT that, when considered together with the pronounced dependence of the transition temperature on subtle structural differences between $Bmab$ and $P$2$_1$/$a$ phases, demonstrates a not insignificant coupling between electronic and lattice degrees of freedom in these trilayer nickelates.

Observation of High-frequency Transverse Phonons in Metallic Glasses

Using inelastic neutron scattering and molecular dynamics simulations on a model Zr-Cu-Al metallic glass, we show that transverse phonons persist well into the high-frequency regime, and can be detected at large momentum transfer. Furthermore, the apparent peak width of the transverse phonons was found to follow the static structure factor. The one-to-one correspondence, which was demonstrated for both Zr-Cu-Al metallic glass and a 3-dimensional Lennard-Jones model glass, suggests a universal correlation between the phonon dynamics and the underlying disordered structure. This remarkable correlation, not found for longitudinal phonons, underscores the key role that transverse phonons hold for understanding the structure-dynamics relationship in disordered materials.

Understanding the Nature of System-Related Issues in Machine Learning Frameworks: An Exploratory Study

Modern systems are built using development frameworks. These frameworks have a major impact on how the resulting system executes, how configurations are managed, how it is tested, and how and where it is deployed. Machine learning (ML) frameworks and the systems developed using them differ greatly from traditional frameworks. Naturally, the issues that manifest in such frameworks may differ as well---as may the behavior of developers addressing those issues. We are interested in characterizing the system-related issues---issues impacting performance, memory and resource usage, and other quality attributes---that emerge in ML frameworks, and how they differ from those in traditional frameworks. We have conducted a moderate-scale exploratory study analyzing real-world system-related issues from 10 popular machine learning frameworks. Our findings offer implications for the development of machine learning systems, including differences in the frequency of occurrence of certain issue types, observations regarding the impact of debate and time on issue correction, and differences in the specialization of developers. We hope that this exploratory study will enable developers to improve their expectations, plan for risk, and allocate resources accordingly when making use of the tools provided by these frameworks to develop ML-based systems.

Ultralow thermal conductivity from transverse acoustic phonon suppression in distorted crystalline α-MgAgSb

Low thermal conductivity is favorable for preserving the temperature gradient between the two ends of a thermoelectric material in order to ensure continuous electron current generation. In high-performance thermoelectric materials, there are two main low thermal conductivity mechanisms: the phonon anharmonic in PbTe and SnSe and phonon scattering resulting from the dynamic disorder in AgCrSe2 and CuCrSe2, which have been successfully revealed by inelastic neutron scattering. Using neutron scattering and ab initio calculations, we report here a mechanism of static local structure distortion combined with phonon-anharmonic-induced ultralow lattice thermal conductivity in α-MgAgSb. Since the transverse acoustic phonons are almost fully scattered by the compound's intrinsic distorted rocksalt sublattice, the heat is mainly transported by the longitudinal acoustic phonons. The ultralow thermal conductivity in α-MgAgSb is attributed to its atomic dynamics being altered by the structure distortion, which presents a possible microscopic route to enhance the performance of similar thermoelectric materials.

Quasi-Spin Ising Model and Monte Carlo Simulation of Ferroelastic Phase Transition: 3D Diffuse Scattering and Displacement Short-Range Ordering in Pre-Martensitic State

A quasi-spin Ising model of ferroelastic phase transition is developed and employed to perform atomic-scale Monte Carlo simulation of thermoelastic martensitic transformation. The quasi-spin variable associated with the lattice sites characterizes the local unit cells of the orientation variants of the ground-state martensite phase, which interact with each other through long-range elastic interactions. The simulation study focuses on the intrinsic behaviors of a defect-free crystal that undergoes cubic-to-tetragonal martensitic transformation. It is shown that the diffuse scattering in the pre-martensitic austenite state results from the spatial correlation of the atomic-scale heterogeneous lattice displacements and manifests the displacement short-range ordering. The effects of temperature, elastic anisotropy, and shear modulus softening on the diffuse scattering and displacement short-range ordering are investigated. It is found that elastic softening in the shear modulus C'=(C11-C12)/2 promotes <110>|<1-10> displacement plane waves that stabilize the cubic austenite phase through increased entropy, decreasing the martensitic transformation temperature. The simulated diffuse scattering is compared and agrees with the complementary synchrotron X-ray single-crystal diffuse scattering experiment.

Realization of Anomalous Floquet Insulators in Strongly-Coupled Nanophotonic Lattices

We experimentally realized Floquet topological photonic insulators using a square lattice of direct-coupled octagonal resonators. Unlike previously reported topological insulator systems based on microring lattices, the nontrivial topological behaviors of our system arise directly from the periodic evolution of light around each octagon to emulate a periodically-driven system. By exploiting asynchronism in the evanescent coupling between adjacent octagonal resonators, we could achieve strong and asymmetric couplings in each unit cell, which are necessary for observing Anomalous Floquet Insulator behaviors. Direct imaging of scattered light from fabricated samples confirmed the existence of chiral edge states as predicted by the topological phase map of the lattice. In addition, by exploiting the frequency dispersion of the coupling coefficients, we could also observe topological phase changes of the lattice from normal insulator to Chern and Floquet insulators. Our lattice thus provides a versatile nanophotonic system for investigating 2D Floquet topological insulators.

High pO2 Floating Zone Crystal Growth of the Perovskite Nickelate PrNiO3

Single crystals of PrNiO3 were grown under an oxygen pressure of 295 bar using a unique high-pressure optical-image floating zone furnace. The crystals, with volume in excess of 1 mm3, were characterized structurally using single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction. Resistivity, specific heat, and magnetic susceptibility were measured, all of which evidenced an abrupt, first order metal-insulator transition (MIT) at ~130 K, in agreement with previous literature reports on polycrystalline specimens. Temperature-dependent single crystal diffraction was performed to investigate changes through the MIT. Our study demonstrates the opportunity space for high fugacity, reactive environments for single crystal growth specifically of perovskite nickelates but more generally to correlated electron oxides.
