Energy Efficiency Challenges of 5G Small Cell Networks

The deployment of a large number of small cells poses new challenges to energy efficiency, which has often been ignored in fifth generation (5G) cellular networks. While massive multiple-input multiple outputs (MIMO) will reduce the transmission power at the expense of higher computational cost, the question remains as to which computation or transmission power is more important in the energy efficiency of 5G small cell networks. Thus, the main objective in this paper is to investigate the computation power based on the Landauer principle. Simulation results reveal that more than 50% of the energy is consumed by the computation power at 5G small cell BS's. Moreover, the computation power of 5G small cell BS can approach 800 watt when the massive MIMO (e.g., 128 antennas) is deployed to transmit high volume traffic. This clearly indicates that computation power optimization can play a major role in the energy efficiency of small cell networks.

Mixed and componentwise condition numbers for a linear function of the solution of the total least squares problem

In this paper, we consider the mixed and componentwise condition numbers for a linear function of the solution to the total least squares (TLS) problem. We derive the explicit expressions of the mixed and componentwise condition numbers through the dual techniques. The sharp upper bounds for the derived mixed and componentwise condition numbers are obtained. For the structured TLS problem, we consider the structured perturbation analysis and obtain the corresponding expressions of the mixed and componentwise condition numbers. We prove that the structured ones are smaller than their corresponding unstructured ones based on the derived expressions. Moreover, we point out that the new derived expressions can recover the previous results on the condition analysis for the TLS problem. The numerical examples show that the derived condition numbers can give sharp perturbation bounds, on the other hand normwise condition numbers can severely overestimate the relative errors because normwise condition numbers ignore the data sparsity and scaling. Meanwhile, from the observations of numerical examples, it is more suitable to adopt structured condition numbers to measure the conditioning for the structured TLS problem.

Nuclear Fusion in Laser-Driven Counter-Streaming Collisionless Plasmas

Nuclear fusion reactions are the most important processes in nature to power stars and produce new elements, and lie at the center of the understanding of nucleosynthesis in the universe. It is critically important to study the reactions in full plasma environments that are close to true astrophysical conditions. By using laser-driven counter-streaming collisionless plasmas, we studied the fusion D$+$D$\rightarrow n +^3$He in a Gamow-like window around 27 keV. The results show that astrophysical nuclear reaction yield can be modulated significantly by the self-generated electromagnetic fields and the collective motion of the plasma. This plasma-version mini-collider may provide a novel tool for studies of astrophysics-interested nuclear reactions in plasma with tunable energies in earth-based laboratories.

Superdeformed band in the $N = Z+4$ nucleus $^{40}$Ar: A projected shell model analysis

It has been debated whether the experimentally-identified superdeformed rotational band in $^{40}$Ar [E. Ideguchi, et al., Phys. Lett. B 686 (2010) 18] has an axially or triaxially deformed shape. Projected shell model calculations with angular-momentum-projection using an axially-deformed basis are performed up to high spins. Our calculated energy levels indicate a perfect collective-rotor behavior for the superdeformed yrast band. However, detailed analysis of the wave functions reveals that the high-spin structure is dominated by mixed 0-, 2-, and 4-quasiparticle configurations. The calculated electric quadrupole transition probabilities reproduce well the known experimental data and suggest a reduced, but still significant, collectivity in the high spin region. The deduced triaxial deformation parameters are small throughout the entire band, suggesting that triaxiality is not very important for this superdeformed band.

Superconductivity and Superfluidity as Universal Emergent Phenomena

Superconductivity (SC) or superfluidity (SF) is observed across a remarkably broad range of fermionic systems: in BCS, cuprate, iron-based, organic, and heavy-fermion superconductors, and superfluid helium-3 in condensed matter; in a variety of SC/SF phenomena in low-energy nuclear physics; in ultracold, trapped atomic gases; and in various exotic possibilities in neutron stars. The range of physical conditions and differences in microscopic physics defy all attempts to unify this behavior in any conventional picture. Here we propose a unification through the shared symmetry properties of the emergent condensed states, with microscopic differences absorbed into parameters. This, in turn, forces a rethinking of specific occurrences of SC/SF such as cuprate high-temperature superconductivity, which becomes far less mysterious when seen as part of a continuum of behavior shared by a variety of other systems.

Electric-magnetic Duality of Abelian Gauge Theory on the Four-torus, from the Fivebrane on T2 x T4, via their Partition Functions

We compute the partition function of four-dimensional abelian gauge theory on a general four-torus T4 with flat metric using Dirac quantization. In addition to an SL(4, Z) symmetry, it possesses SL(2,Z) symmetry that is electromagnetic S-duality. We show explicitly how this SL(2, Z) S-duality of the 4d abelian gauge theory has its origin in symmetries of the 6d (2,0) tensor theory, by computing the partition function of a single fivebrane compactified on T2 x T4, which has SL(2,Z) x SL(4,Z) symmetry. If we identify the couplings of the abelian gauge theory τ= {θ\over 2π} + i{4π\over e^2} with the complex modulus of the T2 torus, τ= β^2 + i {R_1\over R_2}, then in the small T2 limit, the partition function of the fivebrane tensor field can be factorized, and contains the partition function of the 4d gauge theory. In this way the SL(2,Z) symmetry of the 6d tensor partition function is identified with the S-duality symmetry of the 4d gauge partition function. Each partition function is the product of zero mode and oscillator contributions, where the SL(2,Z) acts suitably. For the 4d gauge theory, which has a Lagrangian, this product redistributes when using path integral quantization.

Unconventional phase selection in high-driven systems: A complex metastable structure prevails over simple stable phases

Phase selection in deeply undercooled liquids and devitrified glasses during heating involves complex interplay between the barriers to nucleation and the ability for these nuclei to grow. During the devitrification of glassy alloys, complicated metastable structures often precipitate instead of simpler, more stable compounds. Here, we access this unconventional type of phase selections by investigating an Al-10%Sm system, where a complicated cubic structure first precipitates with a large lattice parameter of 1.4 nm. We not only solve the structure of this "big cubic" phase containing ~140 atoms but establish an explicit interconnection between the structural orderings of the amorphous alloy and the cubic phase, which provides a low-barrier nucleation pathway at low temperatures. The surprising rapid growth of the crystal is attributed to its high tolerance to point defects, which minimize the short-scale atomic rearrangements to form the crystal. Our study suggests a new scenario of devitrification, where phase transformation proceeds initially without partitioning through a complex intermediate crystal phase.

Euclidean Dynamical Symmetry in Nuclear Shape Phase Transitions

The Euclidean dynamical symmetry hidden in the critical region of nuclear shape phase transitions is revealed by a novel algebraic F(5) description. With a nonlinear projection, it is shown that the dynamics in the critical region of the spherical--axial deformed and the spherical--$γ$ soft shape phase transitions can indeed be manifested by this description, which thus provides a unified symmetry--based interpretation of the critical phenomena in the region.

Crystalline 'Genes' in Metallic Liquids

The underlying structural order that transcends the liquid, glass and crystalline states is identified using an efficient genetic algorithm (GA). GA identifies the most common energetically favorable packing motif in crystalline structures close to the alloy's Al-10 at.% Sm composition. These motifs are in turn compared to the observed packing motifs in the actual liquid structures using a cluster-alignment method which reveals the average topology. Conventional descriptions of the short-range order, such as Voronoi tessellation, are too rigid in their analysis of the configurational poly-types when describing the chemical and topological ordering during transition from undercooled metallic liquids to crystalline phases or glass. Our approach here brings new insight into describing mesoscopic order-disorder transitions in condensed matter physics.

Toward extremes of angular momentum: Application of the Pfaffian algorithm in realistic calculations

In a calculation of rotated matrix elements with angular momentum projection, the generalized Wick's theorem may encounter a practical problem of combinatorial complexity when the configurations have more than four quasi-particles (qps). The problem can be solved by employing the Pfaffian algorithm generally applicable to calculations of matrix elements for Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov states with any number of qps. This breakthrough in many-body techniques enables studies of high-spin states in a shell-model framework. As the first application of the Pfaffian algorithm, the configuration space of the Projected Shell Model is expanded to include 6-qp states for both positive and negative parities. Taking $^{166}$Hf as an example, we show that 6-qp states become the main configuration of the yrast band beyond spin $I \approx 34\hbar$, which explains the observed third back-bending in moment of inertia. Structures of multi-qp high-$K$ isomers in $^{176}$Hf are analyzed as another example.

Parallel Interleaver Design for a High Throughput HSPA+/LTE Multi-Standard Turbo Decoder

To meet the evolving data rate requirements of emerging wireless communication technologies, many parallel architectures have been proposed to implement high throughput turbo decoders. However, concurrent memory reading/writing in parallel turbo decoding architectures leads to severe memory conflict problem, which has become a major bottleneck for high throughput turbo decoders. In this paper, we propose a flexible and efficient VLSI architecture to solve the memory conflict problem for highly parallel turbo decoders targeting multi-standard 3G/4G wireless communication systems. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed parallel interleaver architecture, we implemented an HSPA+/LTE/LTE-Advanced multi-standard turbo decoder with a 45nm CMOS technology. The implemented turbo decoder consists of 16 Radix-4 MAP decoder cores, and the chip core area is 2.43 mm^2. When clocked at 600 MHz, this turbo decoder can achieve a maximum decoding throughput of 826 Mbps in the HSPA+ mode and 1.67 Gbps in the LTE/LTE-Advanced mode, exceeding the peak data rate requirements for both standards.

Description of collective and quasiparticle excitations in deformed actinide nuclei: The first application of the Heavy Shell Model

The Heavy Shell Model (HSM) (Y. Sun and C.-L. Wu, Phys. Rev. C 68, 024315 (2003)) was proposed to take the advantages of two existing models, the projected shell model (PSM) and the Fermion Dynamical Symmetry Model (FDSM). To construct HSM, one extends the PSM by adding collective D-pairs into the intrinsic basis. The HSM is expected to describe simultaneously low-lying collective and quasi-particle excitations in deformed nuclei, and still keeps the model space tractable even for the heaviest systems. As the first numerical realization of the HSM, we study systematically the band structures for some deformed actinide nuclei, with a model space including up to 4-quasiparticle and 1-D-pair configurations. The calculated energy levels for the ground- state bands, the collective bands such as β - and γ -bands, and some quasiparticle bands agree well with known experimental data. Some low-lying quasiparticle bands are predicted, awaiting experimental confirmation.

Partition Functions for Maxwell Theory on the Five-torus and for the Fivebrane on S1XT5

We compute the partition function of five-dimensional abelian gauge theory on a five-torus T5 with a general flat metric using the Dirac method of quantizing with constraints. We compare this with the partition function of a single fivebrane compactified on S1 times T5, which is obtained from the six-torus calculation of Dolan and Nappi. The radius R1 of the circle S1 is set to the dimensionful gauge coupling constant g^2= 4π^2 R1. We find the two partition functions are equal only in the limit where R1 is small relative to T5, a limit which removes the Kaluza-Klein modes from the 6d sum. This suggests the 6d N=(2,0) tensor theory on a circle is an ultraviolet completion of the 5d gauge theory, rather than an exact quantum equivalence.

Pricing Ad Slots with Consecutive Multi-unit Demand

We consider the optimal pricing problem for a model of the rich media advertisement market, as well as other related applications. In this market, there are multiple buyers (advertisers), and items (slots) that are arranged in a line such as a banner on a website. Each buyer desires a particular number of {\em consecutive} slots and has a per-unit-quality value $v_i$ (dependent on the ad only) while each slot $j$ has a quality $q_j$ (dependent on the position only such as click-through rate in position auctions). Hence, the valuation of the buyer $i$ for item $j$ is $v_iq_j$. We want to decide the allocations and the prices in order to maximize the total revenue of the market maker. A key difference from the traditional position auction is the advertiser's requirement of a fixed number of consecutive slots. Consecutive slots may be needed for a large size rich media ad. We study three major pricing mechanisms, the Bayesian pricing model, the maximum revenue market equilibrium model and an envy-free solution model. Under the Bayesian model, we design a polynomial time computable truthful mechanism which is optimum in revenue. For the market equilibrium paradigm, we find a polynomial time algorithm to obtain the maximum revenue market equilibrium solution. In envy-free settings, an optimal solution is presented when the buyers have the same demand for the number of consecutive slots. We conduct a simulation that compares the revenues from the above schemes and gives convincing results.

Grassmann integral and Balian-Brézin decomposition in Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov matrix elements

We present a new formula to calculate matrix elements of a general unitary operator with respect to Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov states allowing multiple quasi-particle excitations. The Balian-Brézin decomposition of the unitary operator (Il Nuovo Cimento B 64, 37 (1969)) is employed in the derivation. We found that this decomposition is extremely suitable for an application of Fermion coherent state and Grassmann integrals in the quasi-particle basis. The resultant formula is compactly expressed in terms of the Pfaffian, and shows the similar bipartite structure to the formula that we have previously derived in the bare-particles basis (Phys. Lett. B 707, 305 (2012)).

Mixing of quasiparticle excitations and gamma-vibrations in transitional nuclei

Evidence of strong coupling of quasiparticle excitations with gamma-vibration is shown to occur in transitional nuclei. High-spin band structures in [166,168,170,172]Er are studied by employing the recently developed multi-quasiparticle triaxial projected shell model approach. It is demonstrated that a low-lying K=3 band observed in these nuclei, the nature of which has remained unresolved, originates from the angular-momentum projection of triaxially deformed two-quasiparticle (qp) configurations. Further, it is predicted that the structure of this band depends critically on the shell filling: in [166]Er the lowest K=3 2-qp band is formed from proton configuration, in [168]Er the K=3 neutron and proton 2-qp bands are almost degenerate, and for [170]Er and [172]Er the neutron K=3 2-qp band becomes favored and can cross the gamma-vibrational band at high rotational frequencies. We consider that these are few examples in even-even nuclei, where the three basic modes of rotational, vibrational, and quasi-particle excitations co-exist close to the yrast line.

Shell model study for neutron-rich sd-shell nuclei

The microscopic structure of neutron-rich sd-shell nuclei is investigated by using the spherical shell-model in the sd-pf valence space with the extended pairing plus quadrupole-quadrupole forces accompanied by the monopole interaction (EPQQM). The calculation reproduces systematically the known energy levels for even-even and odd-mass nuclei including the recent data for 43S, 46S and 47Ar. In particular, the erosion of the N=28 shell closure in 42Si can be explained. Our EPQQM results are compared with other shell-model calculations with the SDPF-NR and SDPF-U effective interactions.

Rotation alignment in neutron-rich Cr isotopes: A probe of deformed single-particle levels across N=40

Recent experiments have reached the neutron-rich Cr isotope with N=40 and confirmed enhanced collectivity near this sub-shell. The current data focus on low-spin spectroscopy only, with little information on the states where high-j particles align their spins with the system rotation. By applying the Projected Shell Model, we show that rotation alignment occurs in neutron-rich even-even Cr nuclei as early as spin 8 and, due to shell filling, the aligning particles differ in different isotopes. It is suggested that observation of irregularities in moments of inertia is a direct probe of the deformed single-particle scheme in this exotic mass region.
