Fermion dynamical symmetry and strongly-correlated electrons: a comprehensive model of high-temperature superconductivity

We review application of the SU(4) model of strongly-correlated electrons to cuprate and iron-based superconductors. A minimal self-consistent generalization of BCS theory to incorporate antiferromagnetism on an equal footing with pairing and strong Coulomb repulsion is found to account systematically for the major features of high-temperature superconductivity, with microscopic details of the parent compounds entering only parametrically. This provides a systematic procedure to separate essential from peripheral, suggesting that many features exhibited by the high-$T\tsub c$ data set are of interest in their own right but are not central to the superconducting mechanism. More generally, we propose that the surprisingly broad range of conventional and unconventional superconducting and superfluid behavior observed across many fields of physics results from the systematic appearance of similar algebraic structures for the emergent effective Hamiltonians, even though the microscopic Hamiltonians of the corresponding parent states may differ radically from each other.

Intrinsic Color Indices of Early-Type Dwarf Stars

Early-type stars are short lived and scarce in comparison with other types. Based on the recently released catalogs of early type stars from the largest LAMOST spectroscopic survey, the intrinsic colors of the stars with effective temperature up to 32,000\,K are determined for the bands from ultraviolet to infrared by using the blue-edge method. Analytic relations are derived for the intrinsic color index with the effective temperature for the \emph{WISE}, 2MASS, \emph{Gaia}, APASS, SDSS, Pan-STARRS1, and \emph{GALEX} bands. The results are generally consistent with previous works. In addition, the intrinsic colors of O-type dwarfs and OB supergiants are roughly estimated.

Theoretical prediction of a highly responsive material: Spin fluctuations and superconductivity in FeNiB2 system

By analyzing Fe-Ni-B compositional diagram we predict an energetically and dynamically stable FeNiB2 compound. This system belongs to the class of highly responsive state of material, as it is very sensitive to the external perturbations. This state is also characterized by a high level of spin fluctuations which strongly influence possible magnetic long- and short-range orders. Furthermore, we demonstrate that these antiferromagnetically dominating fluctuations could lead to the appearance of spin mediated superconductivity. The obtained results suggest a promising avenue for the search of strong spin fluctuation systems and related superconductors.

Predicting Complex Relaxation Processes in Metallic Glass

Relaxation processes significantly influence the properties of glass materials. However, understanding their specific origins is difficult, even more challenging is to forecast them theoretically. In this study, using microseconds molecular dynamics simulations together with an accurate many-body interaction potential, we predict that an Al$_{\text{90}}$Sm$_{\text{10}}$ metallic glass would have complex relaxation behaviors: In addition to the main ($α$) relaxation, the glass (i) shows a pronounced secondary ($β$) relaxation at cryogenic temperatures and (ii) exhibits an anomalous relaxation process ($α_2$) accompanying $α$ relaxation. Both of the predictions are verified by experiments. Computational simulations reveal the microscopic origins of relaxation processes: while the pronounced $β$ relaxation is attributed to the abundance of string-like cooperative atomic rearrangements, the anomalous $α_2$ process is found to correlate with the decoupling of the faster motions of Al with slower Sm atoms. The combination of simulations and experiments represents a first glimpse of what may become a predictive routine and integral step for glass physics.

Competitive B2 and B33 Nucleation during Solidification of Ni50Zr50 Alloy: Molecular Dynamics Simulation and Classical Nucleation Theory

We investigated the homogenous nucleation of the stoichiometric B2 and B33 phases in the Ni50Zr50 alloy using the persistent embryo method and the classical nucleation theory. The two phases become very close competitors at large supercoolings, which is consistent with the experimental observations. In the case of the B2 phase, the linear temperature dependence of the solid-liquid interface (SLI) free energy extrapolated to the melting temperature leads to the same value as the one obtained from the capillarity fluctuation method (CFM). In the case of the B33 phases, the SLI free energy is also a linear function of temperature at large supercoolings but the extrapolation to the melting temperature leads to a value which is considerably different from the CFM value. This is consistent with the large anisotropy of the SLI properties of the B33 phase nearby the melting temperature observed in the simulation of the nominally flat interface migration.

Effects of dopants on the glass forming ability in Al-based metallic alloy

The effect of dopants on the metallic glass forming ability is usually considered based on analysis of changes in the liquid structure or thermodynamics. What is missing in such considerations is an analysis of how a dopant changes the properties of the crystal phases which can form instead of the glass. In order to illuminate this aspect we performed molecular dynamics simulations to study the effects of Mg and Sm dopants on the crystal nucleation in Al. The simulation data were found to be consistent with the experimental observations that addition of Mg to Al does not lead to vitrification but addition of only 8% Sm does. The significant effect of Sm doping was related to the intolerance of Al to this dopant. This leads to increase in the solid-liquid interfacial free energy, and therefore, to increase in the nucleation barrier and to dramatic decrease in the nucleation rate. The intolerance mechanism also significantly affects the growth kinetics.

Temperature dependence of the solid-liquid interface free energy of Ni and Al from molecular dynamics simulation of nucleation

The temperature dependence of the solid-liquid interfacial free energy, γ, is investigated for Al and Ni at the undercooled temperature regime based on a recently developed persistent-embryo method. The atomistic description of the nucleus shape is obtained from molecular dynamics simulations. The computed γ shows a linear dependence on the temperature. The values of γ extrapolated to the melting temperature agree well with previous data obtained by the capillary fluctuation method. Using the temperature dependence of γ, we estimate the nucleation free energy barrier in a wide temperature range from the classical nucleation theory. The obtained data agree very well with the results from the brute-force molecular dynamics simulations.

Calculation of Critical Nucleation Rates by the Persistent Embryo Method: Application to Quasi Hard Sphere Models

We study crystal nucleation of the Weeks-Chandler-Andersen (WCA) model, using the recently introduced Persistent Embryo Method (PEM). The method provides detailed characterization of pre-critical, critical and post-critical nuclei, as well as nucleation rates that compare favorably with those obtained using other methods (umbrella sampling, forward flux sampling or seeding). We further map our results to a hard sphere model allowing to compare with other existing predictions. Implications for experiments are also discussed.

Using Steady State Behavior to Assess Treatments of Nuclear Isomers in Astrophysical Environments

Differing reaction rates of long-lived nuclear states can force the level occupations out of thermal equilibrium, causing calculations of overall rates which rely on thermal equilibrium to be inaccurate. Therefore, nucleosynthesis calculations which include nuclei with isomers must use techniques that do not assume thermal equilibrium, and it is imperative that such techniques appropriately account for transitions between the ground and isomeric states via higher-lying levels. We develop a formalism to compute the steady state occupations of nuclear levels and apply it to the examples 26Al, 34Cl, and 85Kr. We show that this approach is useful both for assessing the required number of nuclear levels and for determining the temperature above which thermal equilibrium rates are appropriate.

Joint Optimization of Computation and Communication Power in Multi-user Massive MIMO Systems

With the growing interest in the deployment of massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems and millimeter wave technology for fifth generation (5G) wireless systems, the computation power to the total power consumption ratio is expected to increase rapidly due to high data traffic processing at the baseband unit. Therefore in this paper, a joint optimization problem of computation and communication power is formulated for multi-user massive MIMO systems with partially-connected structures of radio frequency (RF) transmission systems. When the computation power is considered for massiv MIMO systems, the results of this paper reveal that the energy efficiency of massive MIMO systems decreases with increasing the number of antennas and RF chains, which is contrary with the conventional energy efficiency analysis results of massive MIMO systems, i.e., only communication power is considered. To optimize the energy efficiency of multi-user massive MIMO systems, an upper bound on energy efficiency is derived. Considering the constraints on partially-connected structures, a suboptimal solution consisting of baseband and RF precoding matrices is proposed to approach the upper bound on energy efficiency of multi-user massive MIMO systems. Furthermore, an oPtimized Hybrid precOding with computation and commuNication powEr (PHONE) algorithm is developed to realize the joint optimization of computation and communication power. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm improves energy and cost efficiencies and the maximum power saving is achieved by 76.59\% for multi-user massive MIMO systems with partially-connected structures.

Effect of Samarium doping on the nucleation of fcc-Aluminum in undercooled liquids

The effect of Sm doping on the fcc-Al nucleation was investigated in Al-Sm liquids with low Sm concentrations (xSm) with molecular dynamics simulations. The nucleation in the moderately undercooled liquid is achieved by the recently developed persistent-embryo method. Systematically computing the nucleation rate with different xSm (xSm=0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 5%) at 700 K, we found Sm dopant reduces the nucleation rate by up to 25 orders of magnitudes with only 5% doping concentration. This effect is mostly associated with the increase in the free energy barrier with a minor contribution from suppression of the attachment to the nucleus caused by Sm doping.

Effective Stellar $β$-Decay Rates of Nuclei with Long-lived Isomers: $^{26}$Al and $^{34}$Cl

Isotopes with low-lying long-lived isomers can behave very differently from other isotopes in astrophysical environments. In particular, the assumption of thermal equilibrium in computing the temperature-dependent $β$-decay rates of such isotopes can fail below certain temperatures. We focus on the $β$-decay of $^{26}$Al since it is one of the most important isotopes in observational astrophysics and has a low-lying isomeric state; we compare and contrast these results with $^{34}$Cl. We rule out recently reported $^{26}$Al effective $β$-decay rates that showed large differences from previous calculations, finding that we agree with the earlier results. We conclude that in general, effective $β$-decay rates should be defined separately for the ground and isomeric states at temperatures where thermal equilibrium cannot be achieved.

Spatially-correlated Site Occupancy in the Nonstoichiometric Meta-stable ε-Al60Sm11 Phase during Devitrification of Al-10.2 at.% Sm Glasses

A metastable ε-Al60Sm11 phase appears during the initial devitrification of as-quenched Al-10.2 at.% Sm glasses. The ε phase is nonstoichiometric in nature since Al occupation is observed on the 16f Sm lattice sites. Scanning transmission electron microscopic images reveal profound spatial correlation of Sm content on these sites, which cannot be explained by the "average crystal" description from Rietveld analysis of diffraction data. Thermodynamically favorable configurations, established by Monte Carlo (MC) simulations based on a cluster-expansion model, also give qualitatively different correlation functions from experimental observations. On the other hand, molecular dynamics simulations of the growth of ε-Al60Sm11 in undercooled liquid show that when the diffusion range of Sm is limited to ~ 4 Å, the correlation function of the as-grown crystal structure agrees well with that of the STEM images. Our results show that kinetic effects, especially the limited diffusivity of Sm atoms plays the fundamental role in determining the nonstoichiometric site occupancies of the ε-Al60Sm11 phase during the crystallization process.

Overcoming the time limitation in Molecular Dynamics simulation of crystal nucleation: a persistent-embryo approach

The crystal nucleation from liquid in most cases is too rare to be accessed within the limited timescales of the conventional molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Here, we developed a "persistent embryo" method to facilitate crystal nucleation in MD simulations by preventing small crystal embryos from melting using external spring forces. We applied this method to the pure Ni case for a moderate undercooling where no nucleation can be observed in the conventional MD simulation, and obtained nucleation rate in good agreement with the experimental data. Moreover, the method is applied to simulate an even more sluggish event: the nucleation of the B2 phase in a strong glass-forming Cu-Zr alloy. The nucleation rate was found to be 8 orders of magnitude smaller than Ni at the same undercooling, which well explains the good glass formability of the alloy. Thus, our work opens a new avenue to study solidification under realistic experimental conditions via atomistic computer simulation.

Structural and Chemical Orders in Ni64.5Zr35.5 Metallic Glass by Molecular Dynamics Simulation

The atomic structure of Ni64.5Zr35.5 metallic glass has been investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The calculated structure factors from the MD glassy sample at room temperature agree well with the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and neutron diffraction (ND) experimental data. Using the pairwise cluster alignment and clique analysis methods, we show that there are three types dominant short-range order (SRO) motifs around Ni atoms in the glass sample of Ni64.5Zr35.5, i.e., Mixed-Icosahedron(ICO)-Cube, Twined-Cube and icosahedron-like clusters. Furthermore, chemical order and medium-range order (MRO) analysis show that the Mixed-ICO-Cube and Twined-Cube clusters exhibit the characteristics of the crystalline B2 phase. Our simulation results suggest that the weak glass-forming ability (GFA) of Ni64.5Zr35.5 can be attributed to the competition between the glass forming ICO SRO and the crystalline Mixed-ICO-Cube and Twined-Cube motifs.

A self-contained algorithm for determination of solid-liquid equilibria in an alloy system

We describe a self-contained procedure to evaluate the free energy of liquid and solid phases of an alloy system. The free energy of a single-element solid phase is calculated with thermodynamic integration using the Einstein crystal as the reference system. Then, free energy difference between the solid and liquid phases is calculated by Gibbs-Duhem integration. The central part of our method is the construction of a reversible alchemical path connecting a pure liquid and a liquid alloy to calculate the mixing enthalpy and entropy. We have applied the method to calculate the free energy of solid and liquid phases in the Al-Sm system. The driving force for fcc-Al nucleation in Al-Sm liquid and the melting curve for fcc-Al and Al3Sm are also calculated.

Neutrino Spectra from Nuclear Weak Interactions in $sd$-Shell Nuclei Under Astrophysical Conditions

We present shell model calculations of nuclear neutrino energy spectra for 70 $sd$-shell nuclei over the mass number range $A=21-35$. Our calculations include nuclear excited states as appropriate for the hot and dense conditions characteristic of pre-collapse massive stars. We consider neutrinos produced by charged lepton captures and decays and, for the first time in tabular form, neutral current nuclear deexcitation, providing neutrino energy spectra on the Fuller-Fowler-Newman temperature-density grid for these interaction channels for each nucleus. We use the full $sd$-shell model space to compute initial nuclear states up to 20 MeV excitation with transitions to final states up to 35-40 MeV, employing a modification of the Brink-Axel hypothesis to handle high temperature population factors and the nuclear partition functions.

Growth and characterization of BaZnGa

We report the growth, structure and characterization of BaZnGa, identifying it as the sole known ternary compound in the Ba-Zn-Ga system. Single crystals of BaZnGa can be grown out of excess Ba-Zn and adopt a tI36 structure type. There are three unique Ba sites and three M\,=\,Zn/Ga sites. Using DFT calculations we can argue that whereas one of these three M sites is probably solely occupied by Ga, the other two M sites, most likely, have mixed Zn/Ga occupancy. Temperature dependent resistivity and magnetization measurements suggest that BaZnGa is a poor metal with no electronic or magnetic phase transitions between 2\,K and 300\,K.
