Improving Language Model Reasoning with Self-motivated Learning

Large-scale high-quality training data is important for improving the performance of models. After trained with data that has rationales (reasoning steps), models gain reasoning capability. However, the dataset with high-quality rationales is relatively scarce due to the high annotation cost. To address this issue, we propose \textit{Self-motivated Learning} framework. The framework motivates the model itself to automatically generate rationales on existing datasets. Based on the inherent rank from correctness across multiple rationales, the model learns to generate better rationales, leading to higher reasoning capability. Specifically, we train a reward model with the rank to evaluate the quality of rationales, and improve the performance of reasoning through reinforcement learning. Experiment results of Llama2 7B on multiple reasoning datasets show that our method significantly improves the reasoning ability of models, even outperforming text-davinci-002 in some datasets.

Enhanced torque efficiency in ferromagnetic multilayers by introducing naturally oxidized Cu

Spin-orbit torque (SOT) in the heavy elements with a large spin-orbit coupling (SOC) has been frequently used to manipulate the magnetic states in spintronic devices. Recent theoretical works have predicted that the surface oxidized light elements with a negligible SOC can yield a sizable orbital torque (OT), which plays an important role in switching the magnetization. Here, we report anomalous-Hall-resistance and harmonic-Hall-voltage measurements on perpendicularly magnetized Ta/Cu/[Ni/Co]$_5$/Cu-CuO$_x$ multilayers. Both torque efficiency and spin-Hall angle of these multilayers are largely enhanced by introducing a naturally oxidized Cu-CuO$_x$ layer, where the SOC is negligible. Such an enhancement is mainly due to the collaborative driven of the SOT from the Ta layer and the OT from the Cu/CuO$_x$ interface, and can be tuned by controlling the thickness of Cu-CuO$_x$ layer. Compared to the Cu-CuO$_x$-free multilayers, the maximum torque efficiency and spin-Hall angle were enhanced by a factor of ten, larger than most of the reported values in the other heterostructures.

Evaluation of Machine Translation Based on Semantic Dependencies and Keywords

In view of the fact that most of the existing machine translation evaluation algorithms only consider the lexical and syntactic information, but ignore the deep semantic information contained in the sentence, this paper proposes a computational method for evaluating the semantic correctness of machine translations based on reference translations and incorporating semantic dependencies and sentence keyword information. Use the language technology platform developed by the Social Computing and Information Retrieval Research Center of Harbin Institute of Technology to conduct semantic dependency analysis and keyword analysis on sentences, and obtain semantic dependency graphs, keywords, and weight information corresponding to keywords. It includes all word information with semantic dependencies in the sentence and keyword information that affects semantic information. Construct semantic association pairs including word and dependency multi-features. The key semantics of the sentence cannot be highlighted in the semantic information extracted through semantic dependence, resulting in vague semantics analysis. Therefore, the sentence keyword information is also included in the scope of machine translation semantic evaluation. To achieve a comprehensive and in-depth evaluation of the semantic correctness of sentences, the experimental results show that the accuracy of the evaluation algorithm has been improved compared with similar methods, and it can more accurately measure the semantic correctness of machine translation.

Learning to Score Sign Language with Two-stage Method

Human action recognition and performance assessment have been hot research topics in recent years. Recognition problems have mature solutions in the field of sign language, but past research in performance analysis has focused on competitive sports and medical training, overlooking the scoring assessment ,which is an important part of sign language teaching digitalization. In this paper, we analyze the existing technologies for performance assessment and adopt methods that perform well in human pose reconstruction tasks combined with motion rotation embedded expressions, proposing a two-stage sign language performance evaluation pipeline. Our analysis shows that choosing reconstruction tasks in the first stage can provide more expressive features, and using smoothing methods can provide an effective reference for assessment. Experiments show that our method provides good score feedback mechanisms and high consistency with professional assessments compared to end-to-end evaluations.

Toward Informal Language Processing: Knowledge of Slang in Large Language Models

Recent advancement in large language models (LLMs) has offered a strong potential for natural language systems to process informal language. A representative form of informal language is slang, used commonly in daily conversations and online social media. To date, slang has not been comprehensively evaluated in LLMs due partly to the absence of a carefully designed and publicly accessible benchmark. Using movie subtitles, we construct a dataset that supports evaluation on a diverse set of tasks pertaining to automatic processing of slang. For both evaluation and finetuning, we show the effectiveness of our dataset on two core applications: 1) slang detection, and 2) identification of regional and historical sources of slang from natural sentences. We also show how our dataset can be used to probe the output distributions of LLMs for interpretive insights. We find that while LLMs such as GPT-4 achieve good performance in a zero-shot setting, smaller BERT-like models finetuned on our dataset achieve comparable performance. Furthermore, we show that our dataset enables finetuning of LLMs such as GPT-3.5 that achieve substantially better performance than strong zero-shot baselines. Our work offers a comprehensive evaluation and a high-quality benchmark on English slang based on the OpenSubtitles corpus, serving both as a publicly accessible resource and a platform for applying tools for informal language processing.

Analytical photoresponses of gated nanowire photoconductors

Low-dimensional photoconductors have extraordinarily high photoresponse and gain, which can be modulated by gate voltages as shown in literature. However, the physics of gate modulation remains elusive. In this work, we investigated the physics of gate modulation in silicon nanowire photoconductors with the analytical photoresponse equations. It was found that the impact of gate voltage varies vastly for nanowires with different size. For the wide nanowires that cannot be pinched off by high gate voltage, we found that the photoresponses are enhanced by at least one order of magnitude due to the gate-induced electric passivation. For narrow nanowires that starts with a pinched-off channel, the gate voltage has no electric passivation effect but increases the potential barrier between source and drain, resulting in a decrease in dark and photo current. For the nanowires with an intermediate size, the channel is continuous but can be pinched off by a high gate voltage. The photoresponsivity and photodetectivity is maximized during the transition from the continuous channel to the pinched-off one. This work provides important insights on how to design high-performance photoconductors.

Transforming the Synthesis of Carbon Nanotubes with Machine Learning Models and Automation

Carbon-based nanomaterials (CBNs) are showing significant potential in various fields, such as electronics, energy, and mechanics. However, their practical applications face synthesis challenges stemming from the complexities of structural control, large-area uniformity, and high yield. Current research methodologies fall short in addressing the multi-variable, coupled interactions inherent to CBNs production. Machine learning methods excel at navigating such complexities. Their integration with automated synthesis platforms has demonstrated remarkable potential in accelerating chemical synthesis research, but remains underexplored in the nanomaterial domain. Here we introduce Carbon Copilot (CARCO), an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven platform that integrates transformer-based language models tailored for carbon materials, robotic chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and data-driven machine learning models, empowering accelerated research of CBNs synthesis. Employing CARCO, we demonstrate innovative catalyst discovery by predicting a superior Titanium-Platinum bimetallic catalyst for high-density horizontally aligned carbon nanotube (HACNT) array synthesis, validated through over 500 experiments. Furthermore, with the assistance of millions of virtual experiments, we achieved an unprecedented 56.25% precision in synthesizing HACNT arrays with predetermined densities in the real world. All were accomplished within just 43 days. This work not only advances the field of HACNT arrays but also exemplifies the integration of AI with human expertise to overcome the limitations of traditional experimental approaches, marking a paradigm shift in nanomaterials research and paving the way for broader applications.

OmniNxt: A Fully Open-source and Compact Aerial Robot with Omnidirectional Visual Perception

Adopting omnidirectional Field of View (FoV) cameras in aerial robots vastly improves perception ability, significantly advancing aerial robotics's capabilities in inspection, reconstruction, and rescue tasks. However, such sensors also elevate system complexity, e.g., hardware design, and corresponding algorithm, which limits researchers from utilizing aerial robots with omnidirectional FoV in their research. To bridge this gap, we propose OmniNxt, a fully open-source aerial robotics platform with omnidirectional perception. We design a high-performance flight controller NxtPX4 and a multi-fisheye camera set for OmniNxt. Meanwhile, the compatible software is carefully devised, which empowers OmniNxt to achieve accurate localization and real-time dense mapping with limited computation resource occupancy. We conducted extensive real-world experiments to validate the superior performance of OmniNxt in practical applications. All the hardware and software are open-access at https://github.com/HKUST-Aerial-Robotics/OmniNxt, and we provide docker images of each crucial module in the proposed system. Beyond Static Evaluation: A Dynamic Approach to Assessing AI Assistants' API Invocation Capabilities

With the rise of Large Language Models (LLMs), AI assistants' ability to utilize tools, especially through API calls, has advanced notably. This progress has necessitated more accurate evaluation methods. Many existing studies adopt static evaluation, where they assess AI assistants' API call based on pre-defined dialogue histories. However, such evaluation method can be misleading, as an AI assistant might fail in generating API calls from preceding human interaction in real cases. Instead of the resource-intensive method of direct human-machine interactions, we propose Automated Dynamic Evaluation (AutoDE) to assess an assistant's API call capability without human involvement. In our framework, we endeavor to closely mirror genuine human conversation patterns in human-machine interactions, using a LLM-based user agent, equipped with a user script to ensure human alignment. Experimental results highlight that AutoDE uncovers errors overlooked by static evaluations, aligning more closely with human assessment. Testing four AI assistants using our crafted benchmark, our method further mirrored human evaluation compared to conventional static evaluations.

Coupled exciton internal and center-of-mass motions in two-dimensional semiconductors by a periodic electrostatic potential

We theoretically investigated the coupling between the exciton internal and center-of-mass motions in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides subjected to a periodic electrostatic potential. The coupling leads to the emergence of multiple absorption peaks in the exciton spectrum which are the hybridizations of 1s, 2s and 2p$\pm$ Rydberg states with different center-of-mass momentums. The energies and wave functions of hybrid states can be strongly modulated by varying the profile of the periodic electrostatic potential, which well reproduces the recent experimental observations. Combined with the electron-hole exchange interaction, non-degenerate valley-coherent bright excitons can be realized by applying an in-plane electric field, with the valley coherence determined by the field direction.

The discovery of three-dimensional Van Hove singularity

Arising from the extreme/saddle point in electronic bands, Van Hove singularity (VHS) manifests divergent density of states (DOS) and induces various new states of matter such as unconventional superconductivity. VHS is believed to exist in one and two dimensions, but rarely found in three dimension (3D). Here, we report the discovery of 3D VHS in a topological magnet EuCd2As2 by magneto-infrared spectroscopy. External magnetic fields effectively control the exchange interaction in EuCd2As2, and shift 3D Weyl bands continuously, leading to the modification of Fermi velocity and energy dispersion. Above the critical field, the 3D VHS forms and is evidenced by the abrupt emergence of inter-band transitions, which can be quantitatively described by the minimal model of Weyl semimetals. Three additional optical transitions are further predicted theoretically and verified in magneto-near-infrared spectra. Our results pave the way to exploring VHS in 3D systems and uncovering the coordination between electronic correlation and the topological phase.

RobWE: Robust Watermark Embedding for Personalized Federated Learning Model Ownership Protection

Embedding watermarks into models has been widely used to protect model ownership in federated learning (FL). However, existing methods are inadequate for protecting the ownership of personalized models acquired by clients in personalized FL (PFL). This is due to the aggregation of the global model in PFL, resulting in conflicts over clients' private watermarks. Moreover, malicious clients may tamper with embedded watermarks to facilitate model leakage and evade accountability. This paper presents a robust watermark embedding scheme, named RobWE, to protect the ownership of personalized models in PFL. We first decouple the watermark embedding of personalized models into two parts: head layer embedding and representation layer embedding. The head layer belongs to clients' private part without participating in model aggregation, while the representation layer is the shared part for aggregation. For representation layer embedding, we employ a watermark slice embedding operation, which avoids watermark embedding conflicts. Furthermore, we design a malicious watermark detection scheme enabling the server to verify the correctness of watermarks before aggregating local models. We conduct an exhaustive experimental evaluation of RobWE. The results demonstrate that RobWE significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art watermark embedding schemes in FL in terms of fidelity, reliability, and robustness.

In this paper we apply symplectic algorithms to nearly integrable Hamiltonian system, and prove it can maintain lots of elliptic lower dimensional invariant tori. We are committed to consider the elliptic lower dimensional invariant tori for symplectic mapping with a small twist under the Rüssmann's non-degenerate condition, and focus on its measure estimation. And then apply it to the nearly integrable Hamiltonian system to obtain lots of elliptic lower dimensional invariant tori.

First-principles methodology for studying magnetotransport in narrow-gap semiconductors: an application to Zirconium Pentatelluride ZrTe5

The origin of anomalous resistivity peak and accompanied sign reversal of Hall resistivity of ZrTe$_5$ has been under debate for a long time. Although various theoretical models have been proposed to account for these intriguing transport properties, a systematic study from first principles view is still lacking. In this work, we present a first principles calculation combined with Boltzmann transport theory to investigate the transport properties in narrow-gap semiconductors at different temperatures and doping densities within the relaxation time approximation. Regarding the sensitive temperature-dependent chemical potential and relaxation time of semiconductors, we take proper approximation to simulate these two variables, and then comprehensively study the transport properties of ZrTe$_5$ both in the absence and presence of an applied magnetic field. Without introducing topological phases and correlation interactions, we qualitatively reproduced crucial features observed in experiments, including zero-field resistivity anomaly, nonlinear Hall resistivity with sign reversal, and non-saturating magnetoresistance at high temperatures. Our calculation allows a systematic interpretation of the observed properties in terms of multi-carrier and Fermi surface geometry. Our method can be extended to other narrow-gap semiconductors and further pave the way to explore interesting and novel transport properties of this field.

Rethinking the Instruction Quality: LIFT is What You Need

Instruction tuning, a specialized technique to enhance large language model (LLM) performance via instruction datasets, relies heavily on the quality of employed data. Existing quality improvement methods alter instruction data through dataset expansion or curation. However, the expansion method risks data redundancy, potentially compromising LLM performance, while the curation approach confines the LLM's potential to the original dataset. Our aim is to surpass the original data quality without encountering these shortcomings. To achieve this, we propose LIFT (LLM Instruction Fusion Transfer), a novel and versatile paradigm designed to elevate the instruction quality to new heights. LIFT strategically broadens data distribution to encompass more high-quality subspaces and eliminates redundancy, concentrating on high-quality segments across overall data subspaces. Experimental results demonstrate that, even with a limited quantity of high-quality instruction data selected by our paradigm, LLMs not only consistently uphold robust performance across various tasks but also surpass some state-of-the-art results, highlighting the significant improvement in instruction quality achieved by our paradigm.

Reconfigurable memristors featuring neural and synaptic functions hold great potential for neuromorphic circuits by simplifying system architecture, cutting power consumption, and boosting computational efficiency. Their additive manufacturing on sustainable substrates offers unique advantages for future electronics, including low environmental impact. Here, exploiting structure-property relationship of MoS2 nanoflake-based resistive layer, we present paper-based, inkjet-printed, reconfigurable memristors. With >90% yield from a 16x65 device array, our memristors demonstrate robust resistive switching, with $>10^5$ ON-OFF ratio and <0.5 V operation in non-volatile state. Through modulation of compliance current, the devices transition into volatile state, with only 50 pW switching power consumption, rivalling state-of-the-art metal oxide-based counterparts. We show device recyclability and stable, reconfigurable operation following disassembly, material collection and re-fabrication. We further demonstrate synaptic plasticity and neuronal leaky integrate-and-fire functionality, with disposable applications in smart packaging and simulated medical image diagnostics. Our work shows a sustainable pathway towards printable, high-yield, reconfigurable neuromorphic devices, with minimal environmental footprint.
