Localized surfaces of three dimensional topological insulators

We study the surface of a three-dimensional spin chiral $\mathrm{Z}_2$ topological insulator (class CII), demonstrating the possibility of its localization. This arises through an interplay of interaction and statistically-symmetric disorder, that confines the gapless fermionic degrees of freedom to a network of one-dimensional helical domain-walls that can be localized. We identify two distinct regimes of this gapless insulating phase, a `clogged' regime wherein the network localization is induced by its junctions between otherwise metallic helical domain-walls, and a `fully localized' regime of localized domain-walls. The experimental signatures of these regimes are also discussed.

Localization-Driven Correlated States of Two Isolated Interacting Helical Edges

We study the localization-driven correlated states among two isolated dirty interacting helical edges as realized at the boundaries of two-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulators. We show that an interplay of time-reversal symmetric disorder and strong interedge interactions generically drives the entire system to a gapless localized state, preempting all other intraedge instabilities. For weaker interactions, an antisymmetric interlocked fluid, causing a negative perfect drag, can emerge from dirty edges with different densities. We also find that the interlocked fluid states of helical edges are stable against the leading intraedge perturbation down to zero temperature. The corresponding experimental signatures including zero-temperature and finite-temperature transport are discussed.

Gapless insulating edges of dirty interacting topological insulators

We demonstrate that a combination of disorder and interactions in a two-dimensional bulk topological insulator can generically drive its helical edge insulating. We establish this within the framework of helical Luttinger liquid theory and exact Emery-Luther mapping. The gapless glassy edge state spontaneously breaks time-reversal symmetry in a `spin glass' fashion, and may be viewed as a localized state of solitons which carry half integer charge. Such a qualitatively distinct edge state provides a simple explanation for heretofore puzzling experimental observations. This phase exhibits a striking non-monotonicity, with the edge growing less localized in both the weak and strong disorder limits.

Pinch Point Singularities of Tensor Spin Liquids

Recently, a new class of three-dimensional spin liquid models have been theoretically discovered, which feature generalized Coulomb phases of emergent symmetric tensor $U(1)$ gauge theories. These "higher rank" tensor models are particularly intriguing due to the presence of quasi-particles with restricted mobility, such as fractons. We investigate universal experimental signatures of tensor Coulomb phases. Most notably, we show that tensor Coulomb spin liquids (both quantum and classical) feature characteristic pinch-point singularities in their spin-spin correlation functions, accessible via neutron scattering, which can be readily distinguished from pinch points in conventional $U(1)$ spin liquids. These pinch points can thus serve as a crisp experimental diagnostic for such phases. We also tabulate the low-temperature heat capacity of various tensor Coulomb phases, which serves as a useful additional diagnostic in certain cases.

Mott glass from localization and confinement

We study a system of fermions in one spatial dimension with linearly confining interactions and short-range disorder. We focus on the zero temperature properties of this system, which we characterize using bosonization and the Gaussian variational method. We compute the static compressibility and ac conductivity, and thereby demonstrate that the system is incompressible, but exhibits gapless optical conductivity. This corresponds to a "Mott-glass" state, distinct from an Anderson and a fully gapped Mott insulator, arising due to the interplay of disorder and charge confinement. We argue that this "Mott-glass" phenomenology should persist to non-zero temperatures.

Single particle excitations in disordered Weyl fluids

We theoretically study the single particle Green function of a three dimensional disordered Weyl semimetal using a combination of techniques. These include analytic $T$-matrix and renormalization group methods with complementary regimes of validity, and an exact numerical approach based on the kernel polynomial technique. We show that at any nonzero disorder, Weyl excitations are not ballistic: they instead have a nonzero linewidth that for weak short-range disorder arises from non-perturbative resonant impurity scattering. Perturbative approaches find a quantum critical point between a semimetal and a metal at a finite disorder strength, but this transition is avoided due to nonperturbative effects. At moderate disorder strength and intermediate energies the avoided quantum critical point renormalizes the scaling of single particle properties. In this regime we compute numerically the anomalous dimension of the fermion field and find $η= 0.13 \pm 0.04$, which agrees well with a renormalization group analysis ($η= 0.125$). Our predictions can be directly tested by ARPES and STM measurements in samples dominated by neutral impurities.

Twisting Anderson pseudospins with light: Quench dynamics in THz-pumped BCS superconductors

We study the preparation (pump) and the detection (probe) of far-from-equilibrium BCS superconductor dynamics in THz pump-probe experiments. In a recent experiment [R. Matsunaga, Y. I. Hamada, K. Makise, Y. Uzawa, H. Terai, Z. Wang, and R. Shimano, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 111}, 057002 (2013)], an intense monocycle THz pulse with center frequency $ω\simeq Δ$ was injected into a superconductor with BCS gap $Δ$; the subsequent post-pump evolution was detected via the optical conductivity. It was argued that nonlinear coupling of the pump to the Anderson pseudospins of the superconductor induces coherent dynamics of the Higgs (amplitude) mode $Δ(t)$. We validate this picture in a two-dimensional BCS model with a combination of exact numerics and the Lax reduction method, and we compute the nonequilibrium phase diagram as a function of the pump intensity. The main effect of the pump is to scramble the orientations of Anderson pseudospins along the Fermi surface by twisting them in the $xy$-plane. We show that more intense pump pulses can induce a far-from-equilibrium phase of gapless superconductivity ("phase I"), originally predicted in the context of interaction quenches in ultracold atoms. We show that the THz pump method can reach phase I at much lower energy densities than an interaction quench, and we demonstrate that Lax reduction (tied to the integrability of the BCS Hamiltonian) provides a general quantitative tool for computing coherent BCS dynamics. We also calculate the Mattis-Bardeen optical conductivity for the nonequilibrium states discussed here.

Topological Protection from Random Rashba Spin-Orbit Backscattering: Ballistic Transport in a Helical Luttinger Liquid

The combination of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and potential disorder induces a random current operator for the edge states of a 2D topological insulator. We prove that charge transport through such an edge is ballistic at any temperature, with or without Luttinger liquid interactions. The solution exploits a mapping to a spin 1/2 in a time-dependent field that preserves the projection along one randomly undulating component (integrable dynamics). Our result is exact and rules out random Rashba backscattering as a source of temperature-dependent transport, absent integrability-breaking terms.

Helical Quantum Edge Gears in 2D Topological Insulators

We show that two-terminal transport can measure the Luttinger liquid (LL) parameter $K$, in helical LLs at the edges of two dimensional topological insulators (TIs) with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We consider a Coulomb drag geometry with two coplanar TIs and short-ranged spin-flip inter-edge scattering. Current injected into one edge loop induces circulation in the second, which floats without leads. In the low-temperature ($T \rightarrow 0$) perfect drag regime, the conductance is $(e^2/h)(2 K + 1)/(K + 1)$. At higher $T$ we predict a conductivity $\sim T^{-4K+3}$. The conductivity for a single edge is also computed.

Surface transport coefficients for three-dimensional topological superconductors

We argue that surface spin and thermal conductivities of three-dimensional topological superconductors are universal and topologically quantized at low temperature. For a bulk winding number $ν$, there are $|ν|$ "colors" of surface Majorana fermions. Localization corrections to surface transport coefficients vanish due to time-reversal symmetry (TRS). We argue that Altshuler-Aronov interaction corrections vanish because TRS forbids color or spin Friedel oscillations. We confirm this within a perturbative expansion in the interactions, and to lowest order in a large-$|ν|$ expansion. In both cases, we employ an asymptotically exact treatment of quenched disorder effects that exploits the chiral character unique to two-dimensional, time-reversal-invariant Majorana surface states.

Topological protection, disorder, and interactions: Survival at the surface of 3D topological superconductors

We consider the interplay of disorder and interactions upon the gapless surface states of 3D topological superconductors. The combination of topology and superconducting order inverts the action of time-reversal symmetry, so that extrinsic time-reversal invariant surface perturbations appear only as "pseudomagnetic" fields (abelian and non-abelian vector potentials, which couple to spin and valley currents). The main effect of disorder is to induce multifractal scaling in surface state wavefunctions. These critically delocalized, yet strongly inhomogeneous states renormalize interaction matrix elements relative to the clean system. We compute the enhancement or suppression of interaction scaling dimensions due to the disorder exactly, using conformal field theory. We determine the conditions under which interactions remain irrelevant in the presence of disorder for symmetry classes AIII and DIII. In the limit of large topological winding numbers (many surface valleys), we show that the effective field theory takes the form of a Finkel'stein non-linear sigma model, augmented by the Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten term. The sigma model incorporates interaction effects to all orders, and provides a framework for a controlled perturbative expansion; the inverse spin or thermal conductance is the small parameter. For class DIII we show that interactions are always irrelevant, while in class AIII there is a finite window of stability, controlled by the disorder. Outside of this window we identify new interaction-stabilized fixed points.

Chalker scaling, level repulsion, and conformal invariance in critically delocalized quantum matter: Disordered topological superconductors and artificial graphene

We numerically investigate critically delocalized wavefunctions in models of 2D Dirac fermions, subject to vector potential disorder. These describe the surface states of 3D topological superconductors, and can also be realized through long-range correlated bond randomness in artificial materials like molecular graphene. A frozen regime can occur for strong disorder in these systems, wherein a single wavefunction presents a few localized peaks separated by macroscopic distances. Despite this rarefied spatial structure, we find robust correlations between eigenstates at different energies, at both weak and strong disorder. The associated level statistics are always approximately Wigner-Dyson. The system shows generalized Chalker (quantum critical) scaling, even when individual states are quasilocalized in space. We confirm analytical predictions for the density of states and multifractal spectra. For a single Dirac valley, we establish that finite energy states show universal multifractal spectra consistent with the integer quantum Hall plateau transition. A single Dirac fermion at finite energy can therefore behave as a Quantum Hall critical metal. For the case of two valleys and non-abelian disorder, we verify predictions of conformal field theory. Our results for the non-abelian case imply that both delocalization and conformal invariance are topologically-protected for multivalley topological superconductor surface states.

Interaction quenches in the 1D Bose gas

The non-equilibrium dynamics of integrable systems are special: there is substantial evidence that after a quantum quench they do not thermalize but their asymptotic steady state can be described by a Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE). Most of the studies on the GGE so far have focused on models that can be mapped to quadratic systems while analytic treatment in non-quadratic systems remained elusive. We obtain results on interaction quenches in a non-quadratic continuum system, the 1D Bose gas described by the integrable Lieb-Liniger model. We compute local correlators for a non-interacting initial state and arbitrary final interactions as well as two-point functions for quenches to the Tonks-Girardeau regime. We show that in the long time limit integrability leads to significant deviations from the predictions of the grand canonical ensemble.

Interaction quenches in the Lieb-Liniger model

We obtain exact results on interaction quenches in the 1D Bose gas described by the integrable Lieb-Liniger model. We show that in the long time limit integrability leads to significant deviations from the predictions of the grand canonical ensemble and a description within the generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE) is needed. For a non-interacting initial state and arbitrary final interactions, we find that the presence of infinitely many conserved charges generates a non-analytic behavior in the equilibrated density of quasimomenta. This manifests itself in a dynamically generated Friedel-like oscillation of the non-local correlation functions with interaction dependent oscillation momenta. We also exactly evaluate local correlations and the generalized chemical potentials within GGE.

Exact three-body local correlations for excited states of the 1D Bose gas

We derive an exact analytic expression for the three-body local correlations in the Lieb-Liniger model of 1D Bose gas with contact repulsion. The local three-body correlations control the thermalization and particle loss rates in the presence of terms which break integrability, as is realized in the case of 1D ultracold bosons. Our result is valid not only at finite temperature but also for a large class of non-thermal excited states in the thermodynamic limit. We present finite temperature calculations in the presence of external harmonic confinement within local density approximation, and for a highly excited state that resembles an experimentally realized configuration.

Disorder from disorder and confinement in the quantum Ising model in the pyrochlore lattice

At zero temperature, the classical antiferromagnetic Ising model on the pyrochlore lattice is a spin disorder phase of the critical spin correlation. It is a deconfined phase in that the binding energy of the monopole-anti-monopole pair is independent of their distance of separation. We show that turning on a transverse magnetic field turns it into the cooperative paramagnet, and the spin correlation becomes exponential decay. Furthermore, it introduces the quantum confinement (of magnetic monopoles), where the binding energy of the pair is proportional to their distance of separation. This disorder state undergoes adiabatic transition to the paramagnetic state in the large field limit. The effective Hamiltonian (without magnetic monopoles) in small field is the Ising Hamiltonian plus ring exchange interaction.

Quantum order by disorder in a semiclassical spin ice

We study the S>1 nearest-neighbor Heisenberg model with a ferromagnetic interaction J and a large non-collinear <111> easy-axis anisotropy D on a pyrochlore lattice. For a finite D>>|J|, the low-energy physics is described by a < 111 > Ising model with second- and third-neighbor exchange interactions. The extensive degeneracy of the ground state manifold in the infinite anisotropic limit is lifted by the transverse quantum fluctuations, and a q=0 ordered state is selected via the quantum order by disorder machanism, through a first-order phase transition at low temperature.
