Modeling and Design of RIS-Assisted Multi-cell Multi-band Networks with RSMA

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been identified as a promising technology for future wireless communication systems due to its ability to manipulate the propagation environment intelligently. RIS is a frequency-selective device, thus it can only effectively manipulate the propagation of signals within a specific frequency band. This frequency selective characteristic can make deploying RIS in wireless cellular networks more challenging, as adjacent base stations (BSs) operate on different frequency bands. In addition, rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) scheme has been shown to enhance the performance of RIS-aided multi-user communication systems. Accordingly, this work considers a more practical reflection model for RIS-aided RSMA communication systems, which accounts for the responses of signals across different frequency bands. To that end, new analytical expressions for the ergodic sum-rate are derived using the moment generating function (MGF) and Jensen inequality. Based on these analytical sum-rate expressions, novel practical RIS reflection designs and power allocation strategies for the RSMA scheme are proposed and investigated to maximize the achievable sum-rate in RIS-assisted multi-cell, multi-band cellular networks. Simple sub-optimal designs are also introduced and discussed. The results validate the significant gains of our proposed reflection design algorithms with RSMA over conventional schemes in terms of achievable sum-rate. Additionally, the power allocation strategy for the RSMA scheme is shown to offer superior performance compared to conventional precoding schemes that do not rely on RSMA.

Coding-Enhanced Cooperative Jamming for Secret Communication in Fluid Antenna Systems

This letter investigates the secret communication problem for a fluid antenna system (FAS)-assisted wiretap channel, where the legitimate transmitter transmits an information-bearing signal to the legitimate receiver, and at the same time, transmits a jamming signal to interfere with the eavesdropper (Eve). Unlike the conventional jamming scheme, which usually transmits Gaussian noise that interferes not only with Eve but also with the legitimate receiver, in this letter, we consider that encoded codewords are transmitted to jam Eve. Then, by employing appropriate coding schemes, the legitimate receiver can successfully decode the jamming signal and then cancel the interference, while Eve cannot, even if it knows the codebooks. We aim to maximize the secrecy rate through port selection and power control. Although the problem is non-convex, we show that the optimal solution can be found. Simulation results show that by using the FAS technique and the proposed jamming scheme, the secrecy rate of the system can be significantly increased.

Design and Implementation of mmWave Surface Wave Enabled Fluid Antennas and Experimental Results for Fluid Antenna Multiple Access

While multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technologies continue to advance, concerns arise as to how MIMO can remain scalable if more users are to be accommodated with an increasing number of antennas at the base station (BS) in the upcoming sixth generation (6G). Recently, the concept of fluid antenna system (FAS) has emerged, which promotes position flexibility to enable transmitter channel state information (CSI) free spatial multiple access on one radio frequency (RF) chain. On the theoretical side, the fluid antenna multiple access (FAMA) approach offers a scalable alternative to massive MIMO spatial multiplexing. However, FAMA lacks experimental validation and the hardware implementation of FAS remains a mysterious approach. The aim of this paper is to provide a novel hardware design for FAS and evaluate the performance of FAMA using experimental data. Our FAS design is based on a dynamically reconfigurable "fluid" radiator which is capable of adjusting its position within a predefined space. One single-channel fluid antenna (SCFA) and one double-channel fluid antenna (DCFA) are designed, electromagnetically simulated, fabricated, and measured. The measured radiation patterns of prototypes are imported into channel and network models for evaluating their performance in FAMA. The experimental results demonstrate that in the 5G millimeter-wave (mmWave) bands (24-30 GHz), the FAS prototypes can vary their gain up to an averaged value of 11 dBi. In the case of 4-user FAMA, the double-channel FAS can significantly reduce outage probability by 57% and increases the multiplexing gain to 2.27 when compared to a static omnidirectional antenna.

Cache-Enabled Millimetre-Wave Fluid Antenna Systems: Modeling and Performance

This letter investigates the performance of content caching in a heterogeneous cellular network (HetNet) consisting of fluid antenna system (FAS)-equipped mobile users (MUs) and millimeter-wave (mm-wave) single-antenna small base stations (SBSs), distributed according to the independent homogeneous Poisson point processes (HPPP). In particular, it is assumed that the most popular contents are cached in the SBSs to serve the FAS-equipped MUs requests. To assess the system performance, we derive compact expressions for the successful content delivery probability (SCDP) and the content delivery delay (CDD) using the Gauss-Laguerre quadrature technique. Our numerical results show that the performance of cache-enabled mm-wave HetNets can be greatly improved, when the FAS is utilized at the MUs instead of traditional fixed-antenna system deployment.

On Performance of RIS-Aided Fluid Antenna Systems

This letter studies the performance of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided communications for a fluid antenna system (FAS) enabled receiver. Specifically, a fixed singleantenna base station (BS) transmits information through a RIS to a mobile user (MU) which is equipped with a planar fluid antenna in the absence of a direct link.We first analyze the spatial correlation structures among the positions (or ports) in the planar FAS, and then derive the joint distribution of the equivalent channel gain at the user by exploiting the central limit theorem. Furthermore, we obtain compact analytical expressions for the outage probability (OP) and delay outage rate (DOR). Numerical results illustrate that using FAS with only one activated port into the RIS-aided communication network can greatly enhance the performance, when compared to traditional antenna systems (TAS).

A new route to massive hot subdwarfs: common envelope ejection from asymptotic giant branch stars

The hot subdwarf O/B stars (sdO/Bs) are known as extreme horizontal branch stars, which is of great importance in stellar evolution theory. The sdO/Bs are generally thought to have a helium-burning core and a thin hydrogen envelope $(M_{\rm env }<0.02M_\odot)$. In the canonical binary evolution scenario, sdO/Bs are considered to be the stripped cores of red giants. However, such a scenario cannot explain the recently discovered sdO/B binary, SMSS J1920, where the strong Ca H$\&$K lines in the spectrum are found. It suggests that this binary is likely originated from the recent ejection of common envelope (CE). In this {work}, we proposed a new formation channel of massive sdO/Bs, namely sdO/Bs produced from a CE ejection process with an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star (hereafter AGB CE channel). We constructed the evolutionary model of sdO/Bs and successfully explained most of the important observed parameters of the sdO/B star in SMSS J1920, including the evolutionary age, sdO/B mass, effective temperature, surface gravity and surface helium abundance. The minimum sdO/B mass produced from the AGB CE channel is about $0.48M_\odot$. The evolutionary tracks in $\log T_{\rm eff}-\log g$ plane {may explain a fraction of the observational samples} with high-$\log T_{\rm eff}$ and low-$\log g$. Considering wind mass-loss of sdO/Bs, the model could produce helium-rich hot subdwarfs with $\log (n_{\rm He}/n_{\rm H})\gtrsim-1$.

Ultrasensitive piezoelectric sensor based on two-dimensional Na2Cl crystals with periodic atom vacancies

Pursuing ultrasensitivity of pressure sensors has been a long-standing goal. Here, we report a piezoelectric sensor that exhibits supreme pressure-sensing performance, including a peak sensitivity up to 3.5*10^6 kPa^-1 in the pressure range of 1-100 mPa and a detection limit of less than 1 mPa, superior to the current state-of-the-art pressure sensors. These properties are attributed to the high percentage of periodic atom vacancies in the two-dimensional Na2Cl crystals formed within multilayered graphene oxide membrane in the sensor, which provides giant polarization with high stability. The sensor can even clearly detect the airflow fluctuations surrounding a flapping butterfly, which have long been the elusive tiny signals in the famous "butterfly effect". The finding represents a step towards next-generation pressure sensors for various precision applications.

Channel Estimation for FAS-assisted Multiuser mmWave Systems

This letter investigates the challenge of channel estimation in a multiuser millimeter-wave (mmWave) time-division duplexing (TDD) system. In this system, the base station (BS) employs a multi-antenna uniform linear array (ULA), while each mobile user is equipped with a fluid antenna system (FAS). Accurate channel state information (CSI) plays a crucial role in the precise placement of antennas in FAS. Traditional channel estimation methods designed for fixed-antenna systems are inadequate due to the high dimensionality of FAS. To address this issue, we propose a low-sample-size sparse channel reconstruction (L3SCR) method, capitalizing on the sparse propagation paths characteristic of mmWave channels. In this approach, each fluid antenna only needs to switch and measure the channel at a few specific locations. By observing this reduced-dimensional data, we can effectively extract angular and gain information related to the sparse channel, enabling us to reconstruct the full CSI. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed method allows us to obtain precise CSI with minimal hardware switching and pilot overhead. As a result, the system sum-rate approaches the upper bound achievable with perfect CSI.

User Clustering for STAR-RIS Assisted Full-Duplex NOMA Communication Systems

In contrast to conventional reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), simultaneous transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) has been proposed recently to enlarge the serving area from 180o to 360o coverage. This work considers the performance of a STAR-RIS aided full-duplex (FD) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) communication systems. The STAR-RIS is implemented at the cell-edge to assist the cell-edge users, while the cell-center users can communicate directly with a FD base station (BS). We first introduce new user clustering schemes for the downlink and uplink transmissions. Then, based on the proposed transmission schemes closed-form expressions of the ergodic rates in the downlink and uplink modes are derived taking into account the system impairments caused by the self interference at the FD-BS and the imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC). Moreover, an optimization problem to maximize the total sum-rate is formulated and solved by optimizing the amplitudes and the phase-shifts of the STAR-RIS elements and allocating the transmit power efficiently. The performance of the proposed user clustering schemes and the optimal STAR-RIS design are investigated through numerical results

STAR-RIS Assisted Full-Duplex Communication Networks

Different from conventional reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), a recent innovation called simultaneous transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) has emerged, aimed at achieving complete 360-degree coverage in communication networks. Additionally, fullduplex (FD) technology is recognized as a potent approach for enhancing spectral efficiency by enabling simultaneous transmission and reception within the same time and frequency resources. In this study, we investigate the performance of a STAR-RIS-assisted FD communication system. The STAR-RIS is strategically placed at the cell-edge to facilitate communication for users located in this challenging region, while cell-center users can communicate directly with the FD base station (BS). We employ a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) pairing scheme and account for system impairments, such as self-interference at the BS and imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC). We derive closed-form expressions for the ergodic rates in both the up-link and down-link communications and extend our analysis to bidirectional communication between cell-center and cell-edge users. Furthermore, we formulate an optimization problem aimed at maximizing the ergodic sum-rate. This optimization involves adjusting the amplitudes and phase-shifts of the STAR-RIS elements and allocating total transmit power efficiently. To gain deeper insights into the achievable rates of STAR-RIS-aided FD systems, we explore the impact of various system parameters through numerical results.

Fluid Antenna-Assisted Dirty Multiple Access Channels over Composite Fading

This letter investigates the application of the emerging fluid antenna (FA) technology in multiuser communication systems when side information (SI) is available at the transmitters. In particular, we consider a K-user dirty multiple access channel (DMAC) with non-causally known SI at the transmitters, where K users send independent messages to a common receiver with a FA capable of changing its location depending on the channel condition. By connecting Jakes' model to copula theory through Spearman's ρ rank correlation coefficient, we accurately describe the spatial correlation between the FA channels, and derive a closed-form expression for the outage probability (OP) under Fisher-Snedecor F fading. Numerical results illustrate how considering FA can improve the performance of multiuser communication systems in terms of the OP and also support a large number of users using only one FA at the common receiver in a few wavelengths of space.

Interpretable End-to-End Driving Model for Implicit Scene Understanding

Driving scene understanding is to obtain comprehensive scene information through the sensor data and provide a basis for downstream tasks, which is indispensable for the safety of self-driving vehicles. Specific perception tasks, such as object detection and scene graph generation, are commonly used. However, the results of these tasks are only equivalent to the characterization of sampling from high-dimensional scene features, which are not sufficient to represent the scenario. In addition, the goal of perception tasks is inconsistent with human driving that just focuses on what may affect the ego-trajectory. Therefore, we propose an end-to-end Interpretable Implicit Driving Scene Understanding (II-DSU) model to extract implicit high-dimensional scene features as scene understanding results guided by a planning module and to validate the plausibility of scene understanding using auxiliary perception tasks for visualization. Experimental results on CARLA benchmarks show that our approach achieves the new state-of-the-art and is able to obtain scene features that embody richer scene information relevant to driving, enabling superior performance of the downstream planning.

Brezis--Van Schaftingen--Yung Formulae in Ball Banach Function Spaces with Applications to Fractional Sobolev and Gagliardo--Nirenberg Inequalities

Let $X$ be a ball Banach function space on ${\mathbb R}^n$. In this article, under some mild assumptions about both $X$ and the boundedness of the Hardy--Littlewood maximal operator on the associate space of the convexification of $X$, the authors prove that, for any locally integrable function $f$ with $\|\,|\nabla f|\,\|_{X}<\infty$, $$\sup_{λ\in(0,\infty)}λ\left \|\left|\left\{y\in{\mathbb R}^n:\ |f(\cdot)-f(y)| >λ|\cdot-y|^{\frac{n}{q}+1}\right\}\right|^{\frac{1}{q}} \right\|_X\sim \|\,|\nabla f|\,\|_X$$ with the positive equivalence constants independent of $f$, where the index $q\in(0,\infty)$ is related to $X$ and $|\{y\in{\mathbb R}^n:\ |f(\cdot)-f(y)| >λ|\cdot-y|^{\frac{n}{q}+1}\}|$ is the Lebesgue measure of the set under consideration. In particular, when $X:=L^p({\mathbb R}^n)$ with $p\in [1,\infty)$, the above formulae hold true for any given $q\in (0,\infty)$ with $n(\frac{1}{p}-\frac{1}{q})<1$, which when $q=p$ are exactly the recent surprising formulae of H. Brezis, J. Van Schaftingen, and P.-L. Yung, and which in other cases are new. This generalization has a wide range of applications and, particularly, enables the authors to establish new fractional Sobolev and new Gagliardo--Nirenberg inequalities in various function spaces, including Morrey spaces, mixed-norm Lebesgue spaces, variable Lebesgue spaces, weighted Lebesgue spaces, Orlicz spaces, and Orlicz-slice (generalized amalgam) spaces, and, even in all these special cases, the obtained results are new. The proofs of these results strongly depend on the Poincaré inequality, the extrapolation, the exact operator norm on $X'$ of the Hardy--Littlewood maximal operator, and the exquisite geometry of $\mathbb{R}^n.$

Real-Variable Characterizations and Their Applications of Matrix-Weighted Triebel--Lizorkin Spaces

Let $α\in\mathbb R$, $q\in(0,\infty]$, $p\in(0,\infty)$, and $W$ be an $A_p(\mathbb{R}^n,\mathbb{C}^m)$-matrix weight. In this article, the authors characterize the matrix-weighted Triebel-Lizorkin space $\dot{F}_{p}^{α,q}(W)$ via the Peetre maximal function, the Lusin area function, and the Littlewood-Paley $g_λ^{*}$-function. As applications, the authors establish the boundedness of Fourier multipliers on matrix-weighted Triebel-Lizorkin spaces under the generalized Hörmander condition. The main novelty of these results exists in that their proofs need to fully use both the doubling property of matrix weights and the reducing operator associated to matrix weights, which are essentially different from those proofs of the corresponding cases of classical Triebel-Lizorkin spaces that strongly depend on the Fefferman-Stein vector-valued maximal inequality on Lebesgue spaces.

Estimates for Littlewood--Paley Operators on Ball Campanato-Type Function Spaces

Let $X$ be a ball quasi-Banach function space on ${\mathbb R}^n$ and assume that the Hardy--Littlewood maximal operator satisfies the Fefferman--Stein vector-valued maximal inequality on $X$, and let $q\in[1,\infty)$ and $d\in(0,\infty)$. In this article, the authors prove that, for any $f\in \mathcal{L}_{X,q,0,d}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ (the ball Campanato-type function space associated with $X$), the Littlewood--Paley $g$-function $g(f)$ is either infinite everywhere or finite almost everywhere and, in the latter case, $g(f)$ is bounded on $\mathcal{L}_{X,q,0,d}(\mathbb{R}^n)$. Similar results for both the Lusin-area function and the Littlewood--Paley $g_λ^*$-function are also obtained. All these results have a wide range of applications. Particularly, even when $X$ is the weighted Lebesgue space, or the mixed-norm Lebesgue space, or the variable Lebesgue space, or the Orlicz space, or the Orlicz-slice space, all these results are new. The proofs of all these results strongly depend on several delicate estimates of Littlewood--Paley operators on the mean oscillation of the locally integrable function $f$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$. Moreover, the same ideas are also used to obtain the corresponding results for the special John--Nirenberg--Campanato space via congruent cubes.

Boundedness of Fractional Integrals on Special John--Nirenberg--Campanato and Hardy-Type Spaces via Congruent Cubes

Let $p\in[1,\infty]$, $q\in[1,\infty)$, $s\in\mathbb{Z}_+:=\mathbb{N}\cup\{0\}$, and $α\in\mathbb{R}$. In this article, the authors first find a reasonable version $\widetilde{I}_β$ of the (generalized) fractional integral $I_β$ on the special John--Nirenberg--Campanato space via congruent cubes, $JN_{(p,q,s)_α}^{\mathrm{con}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, which coincides with the Campanato space $\mathcal{C}_{α,q,s}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ when $p=\infty$. To this end, the authors introduce the vanishing moments up to order $s$ of $I_β$. Then the authors prove that $\widetilde{I}_β$ is bounded from $JN_{(p,q,s)_α}^{\mathrm{con}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ to $JN_{(p,q,s)_{α+β/n}}^{\mathrm{con}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ if and only if $I_β$ has the vanishing moments up to order $s$. The obtained result is new even when $p=\infty$ and $s\in\mathbb{N}$. Moreover, the authors show that $I_β$ can be extended to a unique continuous linear operator from the Hardy-kind space $HK_{(p,q,s)_{α+β/n}}^{\mathrm{con}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, the predual of $JN_{(p',q',s)_{α+β/n}}^{\mathrm{con}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ with $\frac{1}{p}+\frac{1}{p'}=1=\frac{1}{q}+\frac{1}{q'}$, to $HK_{(p,q,s)_α}^{\mathrm{con}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ if and only if $I_β$ has the vanishing moments up to order $s$. The proof of the latter boundedness strongly depends on the dual relation $(HK_{(p,q,s)_α}^{\mathrm{con}}(\mathbb{R}^n))^* =JN_{(p',q',s)_α}^{\mathrm{con}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, the properties of molecules of $HK_{(p,q,s)_α}^{\mathrm{con}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, and a crucial criterion for the boundedness of linear operators on $HK_{(p,q,s)_α}^{\mathrm{con}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$.

Mixed-Norm Herz Spaces and Their Applications in Related Hardy Spaces

In this article, the authors introduce a class of mixed-norm Herz spaces, $\dot{E}^{\vecα,\vec{p}}_{\vec{q}}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$, which is a natural generalization of mixed Lebesgue spaces and some special cases of which naturally appear in the study of the summability of Fourier transforms on mixed-norm Lebesgue spaces. The authors also give their dual spaces and obtain the Riesz-Thorin interpolation theorem on $\dot{E}^{\vecα,\vec{p}}_{\vec{q}}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$. Applying these Riesz-Thorin interpolation theorem and using some ideas from the extrapolation theorem, the authors establish both the boundedness of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator and the Fefferman-Stein vector-valued maximal inequality on $\dot{E}^{\vecα,\vec{p}}_{\vec{q}}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$. As applications, the authors develop various real-variable theory of Hardy spaces associated with $\dot{E}^{\vecα,\vec{p}}_{\vec{q}}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ by using the existing results of Hardy spaces associated with ball quasi-Banach function spaces. These results strongly depend on the duality of $\dot{E}^{\vecα,\vec{p}}_{\vec{q}}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ and the non-trivial constructions of auxiliary functions in the Riesz-Thorin interpolation theorem.

Port Selection for Fluid Antenna Systems

Fluid antenna system promises to obtain enormous diversity in the small space of a mobile device by switching the position of the radiating element to the most desirable position from a large number of prescribed locations of the given space. Previous researches have revealed the promising performance of fluid antenna systems if the position with the maximum received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is chosen. However, selecting the best position, referred to as port selection, requires a huge number of SNR observations from the ports and may prove to be infeasible. This letter tackles this problem by devising a number of fast port selection algorithms utilizing a combination of machine learning methods and analytical approximation when the system observes only a few ports. Simulation results illustrate that with only 10% of the ports observed, more than an order of magnitude reduction in the outage probability can be achieved. Even in the extreme cases where only one port is observed, considerable performance improvements are possible using the proposed algorithms.
