Poincaré Inequality Meets Brezis--Van Schaftingen--Yung Formula on Metric Measure Spaces

Let $(\mathcal{X}, ρ, μ)$ be a metric measure space of homogeneous type which supports a certain Poincaré inequality. Denote by the symbol $\mathcal{C}_{\mathrm{c}}^\ast(\mathcal{X})$ the space of all continuous functions $f$ with compact support satisfying that $\operatorname{Lip} f:=\limsup _{r \rightarrow 0} \sup_{y\in B(\cdot, r)} |f(\cdot)-f(y)|/r$ is also a continuous function with compact support and $\operatorname{Lip} f=\lim _{r \rightarrow 0} \sup_{y\in B(\cdot, r)} |f(\cdot)-f(y)|/r$ converges uniformly. Let $p \in[1,\infty)$. In this article, the authors prove that, for any $f\in\mathcal{C}_{\mathrm{c}}^\ast(\mathcal{X})$, \begin{align*} &\sup_{λ\in(0,\infty)}λ^p\int_{\mathcal{X}} μ\left(\left\{y\in \mathcal{X}:\ |f(x)-f(y)|>λρ(x,y) [V(x,y)]^{\frac 1p}\right\}\right)\, dμ(x)\\ &\quad\sim \int_{\mathcal{X}} [\operatorname{Lip}f(x)]^p \,dμ(x) \end{align*} with the positive equivalence constants independent of $f$, where $V(x,y):=μ(B(x,ρ(x,y)))$. This generalizes a recent surprising formula of H. Brezis, J. Van Schaftingen, and P.-L. Yung from the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space ${\mathbb R}^n$ to $\mathcal{X}$. Applying this generalization, the authors establish new fractional Sobolev and Gagliardo--Nirenberg inequalities in $\mathcal{X}$. All these results have a wide range of applications. Particularly, when applied to two concrete examples, namely, ${\mathbb R}^n$ with weighted Lebesgue measure and the complete $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold with non-negative Ricci curvature, all these results are new. The proofs of these results strongly depend on the geometrical relation of differences and derivatives in the metric measure space and the Poincaré inequality.

Boundedness of Calderón--Zygmund Operators on Special John--Nirenberg--Campanato and Hardy-Type Spaces via Congruent Cubes

Let $p\in[1,\infty]$, $q\in(1,\infty)$, $s\in\mathbb{Z}_+:=\mathbb{N}\cup\{0\}$, and $α\in\mathbb{R}$. In this article, the authors introduce a reasonable version $\widetilde T$ of the Calderón--Zygmund operator $T$ on $JN_{(p,q,s)_α}^{\mathrm{con}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, the special John--Nirenberg--Campanato space via congruent cubes, which coincides with the Campanato space $\mathcal{C}_{α,q,s}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ when $p=\infty$. Then the authors prove that $\widetilde T$ is bounded on $JN_{(p,q,s)_α}^{\mathrm{con}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ if and only if, for any $γ\in\mathbb{Z}_+^n$ with $|γ|\leq s$, $T^*(x^γ)=0$, which is a well-known assumption. To this end, the authors find an equivalent version of this assumption. Moreover, the authors show that $T$ can be extended to a unique continuous linear operator on the Hardy-kind space $HK_{(p,q,s)_α}^{\mathrm{con}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, the predual space of $JN_{(p',q',s)_α}^{\mathrm{con}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ with $\frac{1}{p}+\frac{1}{p'}=1=\frac{1}{q}+\frac{1}{q'}$, if and only if, for any $γ\in\mathbb{Z}_+^n$ with $|γ|\leq s$, $T^*(x^γ)=0$.

WD mass and orbital period relation of sdB + He WD binaries

Most subdwarf B (sdB) + Helium white dwarf (He WD) binaries are believed to be formed from a particular channel. In this channel, the He WDs are produced first from red giants (RGs) with degenerate cores via stable mass transfer and sdB stars are produced from RGs with degenerate cores via common envelope (CE) ejection. They are important for the studies of CE evolution, binary evolution, and binary population synthesis. However, the relation between WD mass and orbital period of sdB + He WD binaries has not been specifically studied. In this paper, we first use a semi-analytic method to follow their formation and find a WD mass and orbital period relation. Then we use a detailed stellar evolution code to model their formation from main-sequence binaries. We find a similar relation between the WD mass and orbital period, which is in broad agreement with observations. For most sdB + He WD systems, if the WD mass (orbital period) can be determined, the orbital period (WD mass) can be inferred with this relation and then the inclination angle can be constrained with the binary mass function. In addition, we can also use this relation to constrain the CE ejection efficiency and find that a relative large CE ejection efficiency is favoured. If both the WD and sdB star masses can be determined, the critical mass ratios of dynamically unstable mass transfer for RG binaries can also be constrained.

Super-R BiFeO$_3$: Epitaxial stabilization of a low-symmetry phase with giant electromechanical response

Piezoelectrics interconvert mechanical energy and electric charge and are widely used in actuators and sensors. The best performing materials are ferroelectrics at a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB), where several phases can intimately coexist. Switching between these phases by electric field produces a large electromechanical response. In the ferroelectric BiFeO$_3$, strain can be used to create an MPB-like phase mixture and thus to generate large electric field dependent strains. However, this enhanced response occurs at localized, randomly positioned regions of the film, which potentially complicates nanodevice design. Here, we use epitaxial strain and orientation engineering in tandem - anisotropic epitaxy - to craft a hitherto unavailable low-symmetry phase of BiFeO$_3$ which acts as a structural bridge between the rhombohedral-like and tetragonal-like polymorphs. Interferometric displacement sensor measurements and first-principle calculations reveal that under external electric bias, this phase undergoes a transition to the tetragonal-like polymorph, generating a piezoelectric response enhanced by over 200%, and associated giant field-induced reversible strain. These results offer a new route to engineer giant electromechanical properties in thin films, with broader perspectives for other functional oxide systems.

Compactness Characterizations of Commutators on Ball Banach Function Spaces

Let $X$ be a ball Banach function space on ${\mathbb R}^n$. Let $Ω$ be a Lipschitz function on the unit sphere of ${\mathbb R}^n$,which is homogeneous of degree zero and has mean value zero, and let $T_Ω$ be the convolutional singular integral operator with kernel $Ω(\cdot)/|\cdot|^n$. In this article, under the assumption that the Hardy--Littlewood maximal operator $\mathcal{M}$ is bounded on both $X$ and its associated space, the authors prove that the commutator $[b,T_Ω]$ is compact on $X$ if and only if $b\in{\rm CMO}({\mathbb R}^n)$. To achieve this, the authors mainly employ three key tools: some elaborate estimates, given in this article, on the norm in $X$ of the commutators and the characteristic functions of some measurable subset, which are implied by the assumed boundedness of ${\mathcal M}$ on $X$ and its associated space as well as the geometry of $\mathbb R^n$; the complete John--Nirenberg inequality in $X$ obtained by Y. Sawano et al.; the generalized Fréchet--Kolmogorov theorem on $X$ also established in this article. All these results have a wide range of applications. Particularly, even when $X:=L^{p(\cdot)}({\mathbb R}^n)$ (the variable Lebesgue space), $X:=L^{\vec{p}}({\mathbb R}^n)$ (the mixed-norm Lebesgue space), $X:=L^Φ({\mathbb R}^n)$ (the Orlicz space), and $X:=(E_Φ^q)_t({\mathbb R}^n)$ (the Orlicz-slice space or the generalized amalgam space), all these results are new.

Bilinear Decomposition and Divergence-Curl Estimates on Products Related to Local Hardy Spaces and Their Dual Spaces

Let $p\in(0,1)$, $α:=1/p-1$ and, for any $τ\in [0,\infty)$, $Φ_{p}(τ):=τ/(1+τ^{1-p})$. Let $H^p(\mathbb R^n)$, $h^p(\mathbb R^n)$ and $Λ_{nα}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ be, respectively, the Hardy space, the local Hardy space and the inhomogeneous Lipschitz space on $\mathbb{R}^n$. In this article, applying the inhomogeneous renormalization of wavelets, the authors establish a bilinear decomposition for multiplications of elements in $h^p(\mathbb R^n)$ [or $H^p(\mathbb R^n)$] and $Λ_{nα}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, and prove that these bilinear decompositions are sharp in some sense. As applications, the authors also obtain some estimates of the product of elements in the local Hardy space $h^p(\mathbb R^n)$ with $p\in(0,1]$ and its dual space, respectively, with zero $\lfloor nα\rfloor$-inhomogeneous curl and zero divergence, where $\lfloor nα\rfloor$ denotes the largest integer not greater than $nα$. Moreover, the authors find new structures of $h^{Φ_p}(\mathbb R^n)$ and $H^{Φ_p}(\mathbb R^n)$ by showing that $h^{Φ_p}(\mathbb R^n)=h^1(\mathbb R^n)+h^p(\mathbb R^n)$ and $H^{Φ_p}(\mathbb R^n)=H^1(\mathbb R^n)+H^p(\mathbb R^n)$ with equivalent quasi-norms, and also prove that the dual spaces of both $h^{Φ_p}(\mathbb R^n)$ and $h^p(\mathbb R^n)$ coincide. These results give a complete picture on the multiplication between the local Hardy space and its dual space.

Real-Variable Characterizations of Local Orlicz-Slice Hardy Spaces with Application to Bilinear Decompositions

Recently, both the bilinear decompositions $h^1(\mathbb{R}^n)\times \mathrm{\,bmo}(\mathbb{R}^n) \subset L^1 (\mathbb{R}^n)+h_\ast^Φ(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and $h^1(\mathbb{R}^n) \times \mathrm{bmo}(\mathbb{R}^n) \subset L^1 (\mathbb{R}^n) + h^{\log}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ were established. In this article, the authors prove in some sense that the former is sharp, while the latter is not. To this end, the authors first introduce the local Orlicz-slice Hardy space which contains the variant $h_\ast^Φ(\mathbb{R}^n)$ of the local Orlicz Hardy space introduced by A. Bonami and J. Feuto as a special case, and obtain its dual space by establishing its characterizations via atoms, finite atoms and various maximal functions, which are new even for $h_\ast^Φ(\mathbb R^n)$. The relationships $h_\ast^Φ(\mathbb{R}^n) \subsetneqq h^{\log}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ is also clarified.

Performance Limits of Fluid Antenna Systems

Fluid antenna represents a concept where a mechanically flexible antenna can switch its location freely within a given space. Recently, it has been reported that even with a tiny space, a single-antenna fluid antenna system (FAS) can outperform an L-antenna maximum ratio combining (MRC) system in terms of outage probability if the number of locations (or ports) the fluid antenna can be switched to, is large enough. This letter aims to study if extraordinary capacity can also be achieved by FAS with a small space. We do this by deriving the ergodic capacity, and a capacity lower bound. This letter also derives the level crossing rate (LCR) and average fade duration (AFD) for the FAS.

A Vision to Smart Radio Environment: Surface Wave Communication Superhighways

Complementary to traditional approaches that focus on transceiver design for bringing the best out of unstable, lossy fading channels, one radical development in wireless communications that has recently emerged is to pursue a smart radio environment by using software-defined materials or programmable metasurfaces for establishing favourable propagation conditions. This article portraits a vision of communication superhighways enabled by surface wave (SW) propagation on "smart surfaces" for future smart radio environments. The concept differs from the mainstream efforts of using passive elements on a large surface for bouncing off radio waves intelligently towards intended user terminals. In this vision, energy efficiency will be ultra-high, due to much less pathloss compared to free space propagation, and the fact that SW is inherently confined to the smart surface not only greatly simplifies the task of interference management, but also makes possible exceptionally localized high-speed interference-free data access. We shall outline the opportunities and associated challenges arisen from the SW paradigm. We shall also attempt to shed light on several key enabling technologies that make this realizable. One important technology which will be discussed is a software-controlled fluidic waveguiding architecture that permits dynamic creation of high-throughput data highways.

Fluid Antenna Systems

Over the past decades, multiple antenna technologies have appeared in many different forms, most notably as multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), to transform wireless communications for extraordinary diversity and multiplexing gains. The variety of technologies has been based on placing a number of antennas at fixed locations which dictates the fundamental limit on the achievable performance. By contrast, this paper envisages the scenario where the physical position of an antenna can be switched freely to one of the N positions over a fixed-length line space to pick up the strongest signal in the manner of traditional selection combining. We refer to this system as a fluid antenna system (FAS) for tremendous flexibility in its possible shape and position. The aim of this paper is to study the achievable performance of a single-antenna FAS system with a fixed length and N in arbitrarily correlated Rayleigh fading channels. Our contributions include exact and approximate closed-form expressions for the outage probability of FAS. We also derive an upper bound for the outage probability, from which it is shown that a single-antenna FAS given any arbitrarily small space can outperform an L-antenna maximum ratio combining (MRC) system if N is large enough. Our analysis also reveals the minimum required size of the FAS, and how large N is considered enough for the FAS to surpass MRC.

Littlewood-Paley Characterizations of Hardy-type Spaces Associated with Ball Quasi-Banach Function Spaces

Let $X$ be a ball quasi-Banach function space on ${\mathbb R}^n$. In this article, assuming that the powered Hardy--Littlewood maximal operator satisfies some Fefferman--Stein vector-valued maximal inequality on $X$ and is bounded on the associated space, the authors establish various Littlewood--Paley function characterizations of the Hardy space $H_X({\mathbb R}^n)$ associated with $X$, under some weak assumptions on the Littlewood--Paley functions. To this end, the authors also establish a useful estimate on the change of angles in tent spaces associated with $X$. All these results have wide applications. Particularly, when $X:=M_r^p({\mathbb R}^n)$ (the Morrey space), $X:=L^{\vec{p}}({\mathbb R}^n)$ (the mixed-norm Lebesgue space), $X:=L^{p(\cdot)}({\mathbb R}^n)$ (the variable Lebesgue space), $X:=L_ω^p({\mathbb R}^n)$ (the weighted Lebesgue space) and $X:=(E_Φ^r)_t({\mathbb R}^n)$ (the Orlicz-slice space), the Littlewood--Paley function characterizations of $H_X({\mathbb R}^n)$ obtained in this article improve the existing results via weakening the assumptions on the Littlewood--Paley functions and widening the range of $λ$ in the Littlewood--Paley $g_λ^*$-function characterization of $H_X(\mathbb R^n)$.

Edge and Central Cloud Computing: A Perfect Pairing for High Energy Efficiency and Low-latency

In this paper, we study the coexistence and synergy between edge and central cloud computing in a heterogeneous cellular network (HetNet), which contains a multi-antenna macro base station (MBS), multiple multi-antenna small base stations (SBSs) and multiple single-antenna user equipment (UEs). The SBSs are empowered by edge clouds offering limited computing services for UEs, whereas the MBS provides high-performance central cloud computing services to UEs via a restricted multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) backhaul to their associated SBSs. With processing latency constraints at the central and edge networks, we aim to minimize the system energy consumption used for task offloading and computation. The problem is formulated by jointly optimizing the cloud selection, the UEs' transmit powers, the SBSs' receive beamformers, and the SBSs' transmit covariance matrices, which is {a mixed-integer and non-convex optimization problem}. Based on methods such as decomposition approach and successive pseudoconvex approach, a tractable solution is proposed via an iterative algorithm. The simulation results show that our proposed solution can achieve great performance gain over conventional schemes using edge or central cloud alone. Also, with large-scale antennas at the MBS, the massive MIMO backhaul can significantly reduce the complexity of the proposed algorithm and obtain even better performance.

Weak Hardy-Type Spaces Associated with Ball Quasi-Banach Function Spaces I: Decompositions with Applications to Boundedness of Calderón--Zygmund Operators

Let $X$ be a ball quasi-Banach function space on ${\mathbb R}^n$. In this article, the authors introduce the weak Hardy-type space $WH_X({\mathbb R}^n)$, associated with $X$, via the radial maximal function. Assuming that the powered Hardy--Littlewood maximal operator satisfies some Fefferman--Stein vector-valued maximal inequality on $X$ as well as it is bounded on both the weak ball quasi-Banach function space $WX$ and the associated space, the authors then establish several real-variable characterizations of $WH_X({\mathbb R}^n)$, respectively, in terms of various maximal functions, atoms and molecules. As an application, the authors obtain the boundedness of Calderón--Zygmund operators from the Hardy space $H_X({\mathbb R}^n)$ to $WH_X({\mathbb R}^n)$, which includes the critical case. All these results are of wide applications. Particularly, when $X:=M_q^p({\mathbb R}^n)$ (the Morrey space), $X:=L^{\vec{p}}({\mathbb R}^n)$ (the mixed-norm Lebesgue space) and $X:=(E_Φ^q)_t({\mathbb R}^n)$ (the Orlicz-slice space), which are all ball quasi-Banach function spaces but not quasi-Banach function spaces, all these results are even new. Due to the generality, more applications of these results are predictable.

Weak Hardy-Type Spaces Associated with Ball Quasi-Banach Function Spaces II: Littlewood--Paley Characterizations and Real Interpolation

Let $X$ be a ball quasi-Banach function space on ${\mathbb R}^n$. In this article, assuming that the powered Hardy--Littlewood maximal operator satisfies some Fefferman--Stein vector-valued maximal inequality on $X$ as well as it is bounded on both the weak ball quasi-Banach function space $WX$ and the associated space, the authors establish various Littlewood--Paley function characterizations of $WH_X({\mathbb R}^n)$ under some weak assumptions on the Littlewood--Paley functions. The authors also prove that the real interpolation intermediate space $(H_{X}({\mathbb R}^n),L^\infty({\mathbb R}^n))_{θ,\infty}$, between the Hardy space associated with $X$, $H_{X}({\mathbb R}^n)$, and the Lebesgue space $L^\infty({\mathbb R}^n)$, is $WH_{X^{{1}/{(1-θ)}}}({\mathbb R}^n)$, where $θ\in (0, 1)$. All these results are of wide applications. Particularly, when $X:=M_q^p({\mathbb R}^n)$ (the Morrey space), $X:=L^{\vec{p}}({\mathbb R}^n)$ (the mixed-norm Lebesgue space) and $X:=(E_Φ^q)_t({\mathbb R}^n)$ (the Orlicz-slice space), all these results are even new; when $X:=L_ω^Φ({\mathbb R}^n)$ (the weighted Orlicz space), the result on the real interpolation is new and, when $X:=L^{p(\cdot)}({\mathbb R}^n)$ (the variable Lebesgue space) and $X:=L_ω^Φ({\mathbb R}^n)$, the Littlewood--Paley function characterizations of $WH_X({\mathbb R}^n)$ obtained in this article improves the existing results via weakening the assumptions on the Littlewood--Paley functions.

Optimal Combining and Performance Analysis for Two-Way EH Relay Systems with TDBC Protocol

In this paper, we investigate a simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) based two-way decode-and-forward (DF) relay network, where time switching (TS) is employed for SWIPT and time division broadcast (TDBC) is employed for two-way relaying. We focus on the design of a combining scheme that decides how the relay combines the signals received from two terminals through a power allocation ratio at the relay. We formulate an optimization problem to minimize the system outage probability and obtain the optimal power allocation ratio in closed form. For the proposed optimal combining scheme, we derive the expressions for the system outage probability and capacity. Simulation results verify our derived expressions and show that the proposed scheme achieves a higher system outage capacity than the existing schemes.

Real-Variable Characterizations of Orlicz-Slice Hardy Spaces

In this article, the authors first introduce a class of Orlicz-slice spaces which generalize the slice spaces recently studied by P. Auscher et al. Based on these Orlicz-slice spaces, the authors introduce a new kind of Hardy type spaces, the Orlicz-slice Hardy spaces, via the radial maximal functions. This new scale of Orlicz-slice Hardy spaces contains the variant of the Orlicz-Hardy space of A. Bonami and J. Feuto as well as the Hardy-amalgam space of Z. V. de P. Ablé and J. Feuto as special cases. Their characterizations via the atom, the molecule, various maximal functions, the Poisson integral and the Littlewood-Paley functions are also obtained. As an application of these characterizations, the authors establish their finite atomic characterizations, which further induce a description of their dual spaces and a criterion on the boundedness of sublinear operators from these Orlicz-slice Hardy spaces into a quasi-Banach space. Then, applying this criterion, the authors obtain the boundedness of $δ$-type Calderón-Zygmund operators on these Orlicz-slice Hardy spaces. All these results are new even for slice Hardy spaces and, moreover, for Hardy-amalgam spaces, the Littlewood-Paley function characterizations, the dual spaces and the boundedness of $δ$-type Calderón-Zygmund operators on these Hardy-type spaces are also new.

Secure Full-Duplex Two-Way Relaying for SWIPT

This letter studies bi-directional secure information exchange in a simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) system enabled by a full-duplex (FD) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) amplify-and-forward (AF) relay. The AF relay injects artificial noise (AN) in order to confuse the eavesdropper. Specifically, we assume a zeroforcing (ZF) solution constraint to eliminate the residual self-interference (RSI). As a consequence, we address the optimal joint design of the ZF matrix and the AN covariance matrix at the relay node as well as the transmit power at the sources. We propose an alternating algorithm utilizing semi-definite programming (SDP) technique and one-dimensional searching to achieve the optimal solution. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer in MISO Full-Duplex Systems

This paper investigates a multiuser multiple-input single-output (MISO) full-duplex (FD) system for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT), in which a multi-antenna base station (BS) simultaneously sends wirelessly information and power to a set of single-antenna mobile stations (MSs) using power splitters (PSs) in the downlink and receives information in the uplink in FD mode. In particular, we address the joint design of the receive PS ratio and the transmit power at the MSs, and the beamforming matrix at the BS under signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and the harvested power constraints. Using semidefinite relaxation (SDR), we obtain the solution to the problem with imperfect channel state information (CSI) of the self-interfering channels. Furthermore, we propose another suboptimal zero-forcing (ZF) based solution by separating the optimization of the transmit beamforming vector and the PS ratio. Simulation results are provided to evaluate the performance of the proposed beamforming designs.
