Spatial-Code-Domain Grouped Index Modulation: Fluid-Antenna-Assisted System Design and BER Performance Analysis

Fluid antenna systems (FASs) provide reconfigurable spatial resources within compact apertures. In this paper, we introduce code-domain grouped index modulation (CGIM) and its spatial-code-domain extension, termed SCGIM, for FA-assisted transceivers. CGIM partitions the available orthogonal spreading codes into multiple subsets and jointly maps information onto their in-phase and quadrature indices and constellation symbols. In an Rx-FAS-assisted single-input multiple-output (SIMO) link, group-wise despreading separates the orthogonal code groups for parallel detection, while receive-port selection provides spatial diversity. SCGIM further associates interleaved Tx-FA port subsets with the code subsets, with the Tx-FAS conveying spatial-index information and the Rx-FAS providing selection diversity in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) link. For SCGIM, we develop maximum-likelihood (ML), staged greedy (GD), and cross-domain index message-passing (CD-IMPD) detectors. CD-IMPD exchanges soft information over a cycle-free factor graph to account for the coupling between the spatial and code indices, requiring only one inward and one outward message pass. For CGIM, the BER is derived from the joint decision regions of the despread-domain observations and averaged over the Rx-FAS selected-gain distribution under Rayleigh, Nakagami-m, and additive white Gaussian noise channels. For SCGIM, an average-BER approximation is derived from a full-pair union bound using the selected-gain density ratio and exponentially tilted quadratic-form Laplace transforms. Simulation results validate the BER analysis and show that the proposed schemes achieve lower BER and higher throughput than the considered IM schemes, while CD-IMPD achieves near-ML BER performance with lower detection complexity.

Structured-Sparsity-Aware Joint User Activity Detection and Channel Estimation for OTFS-Based Grant-Free Random Access

Grant-free random access (GFRA) is a promising solution for massive machine-type communications (mMTC) in future wireless networks. However, reliable user activity detection and channel estimation are critical challenges, particularly when orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) modulation is integrated with GFRA to address doubly selective channels induced by high mobility. In this paper, we propose an OTFS-based GFRA framework that exploits the inherent structured sparsity of delay-Doppler channels. By adopting a basis expansion model (BEM), we formulate joint user activity detection and channel estimation as a structured compressive sensing problem. A bi-level sparsity structure is identified, consisting of common sparsity across multiple receive antennas and activation sparsity across mMTC users. To effectively leverage this structure, we construct a two-layer factor graph and develop a structured sparsity expectation propagation (SS-EP) algorithm for efficient Bayesian inference. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme significantly outperforms existing benchmarks.

CSI RefineNet: A Soft Data-Aided Iterative Receiver for High-Mobility OFDM Systems

In high-mobility orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, rapid channel variation can make the channel state information (CSI) estimated from pilots inaccurate for data subcarriers, leading to a mismatch with their effective channel. To address this issue, this paper proposes a CSI RefineNet receiver, where the CSI is iteratively refined using soft symbol decisions in a data-aided manner. Specifically, a pilot-driven initialization module is first employed to obtain a coarse CSI estimation and the corresponding symbol posterior probabilities. Based on these posteriors, soft data-aided channel observations are constructed over all subcarriers and fused with the initial CSI to refine the channel estimation. The refined CSI is subsequently fed back to the equalization and detection modules, thereby forming an iterative receiver structure. To improve training stability and fully exploit the refinement capability, a two-stage training strategy is also developed. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed CSI RefineNet receiver achieves superior BER performance and strong robustness under different velocities, modulation orders, and pilot spacing configurations in high-mobility OFDM systems.

Data-aided Channel Estimation and Sensing With Sparse Bayesian Learning for AFDM-ISAC System

Affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) has emerged as a promising waveform for next-generation integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems. However, it becomes challenging to improve spectral efficiency while simultaneously obtaining accurate channel and sensing-related parameters, particularly in doubly-dispersive channels with fractional delays and fractional Doppler shifts. To tackle this challenge, by formulating the channel estimation task as a multiple measurement vector (MMV) off-grid sparse recovery problem, we propose a data-aided grid-evolution sparse Bayesian learning (D-GESBL) scheme for channel estimation and sensing under a superimposed pilot framework. Specifically, we develop an efficient data-aided iterative receiver, in which reliably decoded data symbols are fed back as additional pseudo-pilot information to assist channel estimation and sensing. To mitigate off-grid mismatch and improve the overall estimation accuracy, we develop a grid evolution procedure that iteratively adjusts the virtual grids in the discrete affine Fourier (DAF) domain according to the estimated off-grid components. Furthermore, by integrating the generalized approximate message passing (GAMP) algorithm into the proposed SBL framework, we also develop a low-complexity data-aided GAMP-based grid-evolution SBL (D-GAMP-GESBL) algorithm. Finally, the numerical results validate the effectiveness of our proposed schemes and demonstrate their superiority over existing state-of-the-art methods.

Efficiency Meets Reliability: Enhanced Generalized Interleaved Transform for Random Multiplexing

To meet the demands of 6G wireless systems operating in high-mobility scenarios, this paper presents a design of a random multiplexing (RM) communication system that is both storage-efficient and highly reliable. In principle, RM with cross-domain memory approximate message passing (CD-MAMP) can achieve replica maximum a posteriori (MAP)-optimal performance by constructing a fully dense equivalent channel matrix. However, its practical implementation is hindered by the large storage overhead of conventional interleavers and by performance degradation in severely ill-conditioned channels, which existing related work (focusing on interleaving and transform designs) fails to address simultaneously. To overcome these issues, we develop a storage-efficient and highly reliable system that integrates RM with CD-MAMP, referred to as RM-MAMP. Specifically, we propose a Logistic chaotic mapping interleaver with a quantitative parameter-selection criterion, and a dual-stage high-order permutation polynomial interleaver, both of which achieve nearly identical bit-error-rate (BER) as fully random interleavers while reducing the interleaver storage from O(N) to O(1) and significantly lowering interleaver signaling overhead. We further propose a highly reliable interleaved transform framework, comprising an interleaved phase perturbation transform and a multi-layer interleaved coupled transform, to enhance the incoherence and diversity of the equivalent channel matrix. Simulation results show that the proposed storage-efficient interleavers maintain BER performance comparable to fully random interleavers, while the highly reliable transforms provide over 4 dB gain in severely time-varying channels, confirming the dual benefits of reduced storage overhead and improved robustness for the enhanced RM-MAMP system.

MedHopQA: A Disease-Centered Multi-Hop Reasoning Benchmark and Evaluation Framework for LLM-Based Biomedical Question Answering

Evaluating large language models (LLMs) in the biomedical domain requires benchmarks that can distinguish reasoning from pattern matching and remain discriminative as model capabilities improve. Existing biomedical question answering (QA) benchmarks are limited in this respect. Multiple-choice formats can allow models to succeed through answer elimination rather than inference, while widely circulated exam-style datasets are increasingly vulnerable to performance saturation and training data contamination. Multi-hop reasoning, defined as the ability to integrate information across multiple sources to derive an answer, is central to clinically meaningful tasks such as diagnostic support, literature-based discovery, and hypothesis generation, yet remains underrepresented in current biomedical QA benchmarks. MedHopQA is a disease-centered multi-hop reasoning benchmark consisting of 1,000 expert-curated question-answer pairs introduced as a shared task at BioCreative IX. Each question requires synthesis of information across two distinct Wikipedia articles, and answers are provided in an open-ended free-text format. Gold annotations are augmented with ontology-grounded synonym sets from MONDO, NCBI Gene, and NCBI Taxonomy to support both lexical and concept-level evaluation. MedHopQA was constructed through a structured process combining human annotation, triage, iterative verification, and LLM-as-a-judge validation. To reduce leaderboard gaming and contamination risk, the 1,000 scored questions are embedded within a publicly downloadable set of 10,000 questions, with answers withheld, on a CodaBench leaderboard. MedHopQA provides both a benchmark and a reusable framework for constructing future biomedical QA datasets that prioritize compositional reasoning, saturation resistance, and contamination resistance as core design constraints.

Differential Spatial Modulation with Transmit Diversity for Pinching-Antenna Systems

Pinching antenna (PA) systems provide a new spatial degree of freedom by flexible activation of pinching positions. However, the resulting effective channel strongly depends on the activated pinching positions, rendering conventional coherent transmission generally relies on accurate acquisition of instantaneous channel state information (CSI) and incurring substantial pilot overhead. To address this challenge, we propose a differential spatial modulation (DSM) scheme for PA systems, termed as DSM-PA. Specifically, a differential transmission scheme with an embedded Alamouti coding structure is designed, where information bits are conveyed via phase variations between adjacent symbol blocks. This design enables noncoherent transmission without requiring instantaneous CSI while simultaneously achieving transmit diversity. Moreover, to fully exploit the spatial degrees of freedom of PA systems, a pinching position-based index modulation (IM) rule is developed to enhance spectral efficiency. An asymptotically tight upper bound on the average bit error rate (BER) over quasi-static Rician fading channels is derived using the moment-generating function (MGF) method. The diversity analysis also reveals that the proposed DSM-PA scheme achieves full transmit diversity. Finally, simulation results verify the accuracy of the BER analysis and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed DSM-PA scheme.

Flag-Preamble-Based Delay-Doppler Channel Estimation for Next-Evolution Waveforms

Accurate delay-Doppler channel estimation is critical for next-evolution waveforms (NEWs) to enable reliable signal detection. This paper proposes a robust channel estimation algorithm that integrates Flag sequences optimized via an adaptive accelerated parallel majorization-minimization (AP-MM) algorithm with a proposed channel estimation algorithm. To enable efficient, low-complexity parameter extraction and further overcome the robustness issues of conventional greedy estimation, we introduce two key enhancements, i.e., a candidate selection strategy to mitigate spurious sidelobe peaks, and a global least squares (LS) refinement stage to eliminate error propagation caused by sidelobe masking effects. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed scheme significantly outperforms traditional existing algorithms, achieving the desired estimation accuracy.

A Unified Multicarrier Waveform Framework for Next-generation Wireless Networks: Principles, Performance, and Challenges

Next-generation wireless networks require enhanced flexibility, efficiency, and reliability in physical layer waveform design to address the challenges posed by heterogeneous channel conditions and stringent quality-of-service demands. To this end, this paper proposes a unified multicarrier waveform framework that provides a systematic characterization and practical implementation guidelines to facilitate waveform selection for the sixth-generation (6G) mobile networks and beyond. We commence by examining the design principles of the state-of-the-art waveforms, which are categorized into one-dimensional modulation waveforms (e.g., orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM)) and two-dimensional modulation waveforms (e.g., orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS)). Their inherent resilience against various channel-induced interference is further studied, revealing their distinct suitability in diverse channel conditions. Furthermore, an in-depth performance analysis is presented by comparing their key performance indicators (KPIs), followed by an extensive exploration of these advanced waveforms in various applications. Consequently, this work aims to serve as a pivotal reference for waveform adoption in future 6G standardization and network deployment.

Two-Stage Coded-Sliding Beam Training and QoS-Constrained Sum-Rate Maximization for SIM-Assisted Wireless Communications

Stacked intelligent metasurfaces (SIM) provide a cost-effective and scalable solution for large-scale antenna communications. However, efficient channel state information acquisition and phase shift optimization remain critical challenges. In this paper, we develop a unified framework of low-complexity algorithms for SIM-assisted communication systems to address these issues. Specifically, we propose a generalized two-step codebook construction (TSCC) method that leverages two-dimensional angular-domain decoupling to transform planar array beamformer design into two independent one-dimensional linear array beamformer design problems, efficiently solved via the Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm and our proposed majorization-minimization-based proximal distance (PDMM) algorithm. We further develop a two-stage coded-sliding beam training (TSCSBT) method for low-overhead and high-accuracy beam training, where error-correcting codes are embedded in the first-stage training to enhance robustness against noise, and sliding sampling is subsequently performed around the matched angular samples to improve angular resolution. The proposed framework is further extended to multi-path user channels. Finally, a variable decoupling-based block successive upper bound minimization (VD-BSUM) algorithm is proposed to directly solve the QoS-constrained sum-rate maximization problem through closed-form iterative updates with substantially reduced computational complexity. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods in achieving precise beam pattern realization, improved beam training accuracy and angular resolution, and enhanced sum-rate performance.

Achievable Rate and Coding Principle for MIMO Multicarrier Systems With Cross-Domain MAMP Receiver Over Doubly Selective Channels

The integration of multicarrier modulation and multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) is critical for reliable transmission of wireless signals in complex environments, which significantly improve spectrum efficiency. Existing studies have shown that popular orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) and affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) offer significant advantages over orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in uncoded doubly selective channels. However, it remains uncertain whether these benefits extend to coded systems. Meanwhile, the information-theoretic limit analysis of coded MIMO multicarrier systems and the corresponding low-complexity receiver design remain unclear. To overcome these challenges, this paper proposes a multi-slot cross-domain memory approximate message passing (MS-CD-MAMP) receiver as well as develops its information-theoretic (i.e., achievable rate) limit and optimal coding principle for MIMO-multicarrier modulation (e.g., OFDM, OTFS, and AFDM) systems. The proposed MS-CD-MAMP receiver can exploit not only the time domain channel sparsity for low complexity but also the corresponding symbol domain constellation constraints for performance enhancement. Meanwhile, limited by the high-dimensional complex state evolution (SE), a simplified single-input single-output variational SE is proposed to derive the achievable rate of MS-CD-MAMP and the optimal coding principle with the goal of maximizing the achievable rate. Numerical results show that coded MIMO-OFDM/OTFS/AFDM with MS-CD-MAMP achieve the same maximum achievable rate in doubly selective channels, whose finite-length performance with practical optimized low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes is only 0.5 $\sim$ 1.8 dB away from the associated theoretical limit, and has 0.8 $\sim$ 4.4 dB gain over the well-designed point-to-point LDPC codes.

Low-Complexity Channel Estimation for Internet of Vehicles AFDM Communications With Sparse Bayesian Learning

Affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) has been considered as a promising waveform to enable high-reliable connectivity in the internet of vehicles. However, accurate channel estimation is critical and challenging to achieve the expected performance of the AFDM systems in doubly-dispersive channels. In this paper, we propose a sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) framework for AFDM systems and develop a dynamic grid update strategy with two off-grid channel estimation methods, i.e., grid-refinement SBL (GR-SBL) and grid-evolution SBL (GE-SBL) estimators. Specifically, the GR-SBL employs a localized grid refinement method and dynamically updates grid for a high-precision estimation. The GE-SBL estimator approximates the off-grid components via first-order linear approximation and enables gradual grid evolution for estimation accuracy enhancement. Furthermore, we develop a distributed computing scheme to decompose the large-dimensional channel estimation model into multiple manageable small-dimensional sub-models for complexity reduction of GR-SBL and GE-SBL, denoted as distributed GR-SBL (D-GR-SBL) and distributed GE-SBL (D-GE-SBL) estimators, which also support parallel processing to reduce the computational latency. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that the proposed channel estimators outperform existing competitive schemes. The GR-SBL estimator achieves high-precision estimation with fine step sizes at the cost of high complexity, while the GE-SBL estimator provides a better trade-off between performance and complexity. The proposed D-GR-SBL and D-GE-SBL estimators effectively reduce complexity and maintain comparable performance to GR-SBL and GE-SBL estimators, respectively.

Multi-Resolution Codebook Design and Multiuser Interference Management for Discrete XL-RIS-Aided Near-Field MIMO Systems

Extremely large-scale reconfigurable intelligent surface (XL-RIS) can effectively overcome severe fading and provide higher communication performance. However, current research on XL-RIS overlooks the discrete phase-shift characteristics of RIS in practical systems, which will result in significant performance degradation. In this paper, we investigate near-field communication schemes assisted by XL-RIS with discrete phase shifts.Specifically, we propose a hierarchical beam training method to obtain the user channel state information (CSI), and develop the jointly optimized codebook construction (JOCC) method and separately optimized codebook construction (SOCC) method for base station (BS) precoding and XL-RIS phase shifts, respectively. With JOCC, the most superior beam training performance can be obtained. With SOCC, higher performance than the single-antenna BS codebook can be obtained at a similar complexity.Further, we propose a flexible multiuser interference management (IM) method that is simple to solve. The IM method uses adaptive gain matrix approximation to take into account user fairness and can be solved in closed-form iterations. In addition, we extend the proposed method to a hybrid precoding design. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed multi-resolution codebook construction method can obtain more accurate beam patterns and user CSI, and the proposed IM method obtains superior performance over the benchmark methods.

Retrieval augmented generation based dynamic prompting for few-shot biomedical named entity recognition using large language models

Biomedical named entity recognition (NER) is a high-utility natural language processing (NLP) task, and large language models (LLMs) show promise particularly in few-shot settings (i.e., limited training data). In this article, we address the performance challenges of LLMs for few-shot biomedical NER by investigating a dynamic prompting strategy involving retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). In our approach, the annotated in-context learning examples are selected based on their similarities with the input texts, and the prompt is dynamically updated for each instance during inference. We implemented and optimized static and dynamic prompt engineering techniques and evaluated them on five biomedical NER datasets. Static prompting with structured components increased average F1-scores by 12% for GPT-4, and 11% for GPT-3.5 and LLaMA 3-70B, relative to basic static prompting. Dynamic prompting further improved performance, with TF-IDF and SBERT retrieval methods yielding the best results, improving average F1-scores by 7.3% and 5.6% in 5-shot and 10-shot settings, respectively. These findings highlight the utility of contextually adaptive prompts via RAG for biomedical NER.

Optimizing Fluid Antenna Configurations for Constructive Interference Precoding

The fluid antenna system (FAS) has emerged as a new physical-layer concept to provide enhanced propagation conditions for multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications over conventional fixed arrays. This work focuses on minimizing the maximum symbol error probability (SEP) under $M$-ary phase shift keying (MPSK) signaling in a multiuser downlink equipped with FAS, where each antenna moves within nonoverlapping intervals. This specific problem of joint SEP minimization with FAS and constructive interference (CI) precoding has not been previously addressed. The resulting problem turns out to be a nonconvex and nonsmooth optimization challenge. We transform the SEP minimization problem into a safety margin maximization problem in constructive interference precoding. Then, we customize a smoothing technique and a block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm, with emphasis on low computational complexity. Simulation results show that our approach can reduce bit error rate (BER) compared to both the fixed arrays and FAS designed by existing particle swarm optimization (PSO). Also, our approach shows attractively low computational complexity compared to PSO benchmarks.

Affine Frequency Division Multiplexing Over Wideband Doubly-Dispersive Channels With Time-Scaling Effects

The recently proposed affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) modulation has been considered as a promising technology for narrowband doubly-dispersive channels. However, the time-scaling effects, i.e., pulse widening and pulse shortening phenomena, in extreme wideband doubly-dispersive channels have not been considered in the literatures. In this paper, we investigate such wideband transmission and develop an efficient transmission structure with chirp-periodic prefix (CPP) and chirp-periodic suffix (CPS) for AFDM system. We derive the input-output relationship of AFDM system under time-scaled wideband doubly-dispersive channels and demonstrate the sparsity in discrete affine Fourier (DAF) domain equivalent channels. We further optimize the AFDM chirp parameters to accommodate the time-scaling characteristics in wideband doubly-dispersive channels and verify the superiority of the derived chirp parameters by pairwise error probability (PEP) analysis. We also develop an efficient cross domain distributed orthogonal approximate message passing (CD-D-OAMP) algorithm for AFDM symbol detection and analyze its corresponding state evolution. By analyzing the detection complexity of CD-D-OAMP detector and evaluating the error performance of AFDM systems based on simulations, we demonstrate that the AFDM system with our optimized chirp parameters outperforms the existing competitive modulation schemes in time-scaled wideband doubly-dispersive channels. Moreover, our proposed CD-D-OAMP detector can achieve the desirable trade-off between the complexity and performance, while supporting parallel computing to significantly reduce the computational latency.

Local Ambiguity Shaping for Doppler-Resilient Sequences Under Spectral and PAPR Constraints

This paper focuses on designing Doppler-resilient sequences with low local Ambiguity Function (AF) sidelobes, subject to certain spectral and Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) constraints. To achieve this, we propose two distinctoptimization algorithms: (i) an Alternating Minimization (AM) algorithm for superior Weighted Peak Sidelobe Level (WPSL) minimization, and (ii) a low-complexity Augmented Lagrangian-assisted Majorization Minimization (ALaMM) algorithm with effective WPSL suppression. The proposed schemes hold great potential for sequence design in future 6G and integrated sensing and communication applications, supporting robust sensing under spectral coexistence constraints in high-mobility scenarios.

Generalized Code Index Modulation Aided AFDM for Spread Spectrum Systems

The recently proposed affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) is a new transmission waveform that has shown excellent performance in high-mobility environments, making it a sensible option for the next-generation wireless networks. In this paper, we investigate an energy-efficient generalized code index modulation scheme for AFDM by leveraging spread spectrum, referred to as GCIM-AFDM-SS, to combat the interference caused by the doubly dispersive channels. Specifically, the information bits are conveyed by the transmitted symbols as well as the indices of the selected spreading codes in our proposed GCIM-AFDM-SS scheme. To avoid extensive computations, we also develop a lowcomplexity maximal ratio combining (MRC) detector algorithm, which recovers the spreading codes first and demodulates the symbols afterwards. Moreover, an upper bound on the bit error rate (BER) of the proposed GCIM-AFDM-SS system with maximum-likelihood (ML) detection is derived. Numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed GCIM-AFDM-SS system over the classical AFDM spread spectrum (AFDM-SS) and the existing index modulated AFDM (IM-AFDM) systems.
