Charge-transfer state dynamics in all-polymer solar cells: Formation, dissociation and decoherence

All-polymer solar cells gained substantial achievements in recent years, offering numerous unsettled subjects for mechanical researchers. Based on the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, we then simulate the ultrafast dynamics of charge-transfer (CT) state considering a molecular electrostatic potential drop at the interface between two polymer chains, which are respectively regarded as donor and acceptor in all-polymer solar cells. The formation of a stable CT state is found to be sensitive to the distance between two oppositely charged polarons and the relevant critical electrostatic potential is thus quantified. In order to get insight into the dependence of dissociation of CT state on the width of interfacial layer, two quantities are calculated: One is the Coulomb capture radius between two polarons and the other is the quantum trace distance which serves as the fingerprint of the quantum coherence between them. The dissociation of CT state is found to take place within an ultrafast timescale for an optimum interfacial width. The classical spatial distance and the quantum trace distance manifest converging trend suggesting a decoherence scenario for the charge separation in all-polymer solar cells.

GeoDesc: Learning Local Descriptors by Integrating Geometry Constraints

Learned local descriptors based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have achieved significant improvements on patch-based benchmarks, whereas not having demonstrated strong generalization ability on recent benchmarks of image-based 3D reconstruction. In this paper, we mitigate this limitation by proposing a novel local descriptor learning approach that integrates geometry constraints from multi-view reconstructions, which benefits the learning process in terms of data generation, data sampling and loss computation. We refer to the proposed descriptor as GeoDesc, and demonstrate its superior performance on various large-scale benchmarks, and in particular show its great success on challenging reconstruction tasks. Moreover, we provide guidelines towards practical integration of learned descriptors in Structure-from-Motion (SfM) pipelines, showing the good trade-off that GeoDesc delivers to 3D reconstruction tasks between accuracy and efficiency.

Establishing a microscopic model for nonfullerene organic solar cells: Self-accumulation effect of charges

A one-dimensional many-body model is established to mimic the charge distribution and dynamics in nonfullerene organic solar cells. Two essential issues are taken into account in the model: The alternating donor and acceptor structure and the local imbalance of the intrinsic electrons and holes. The alternating structure is beneficial for the direct generation of charge transfer state which enhances the local imbalance of intrinsic charges. The most remarkable outcome of the model is that, due to the strong Coulomb attractive potential energy, the intrinsic charges in the cells are self-accumulated in a small spatial region. Outside the self-accumulation region, the charge density vanishes so that the recombination is regarded to be largely suppressed. The photogenerated electrons are subsequently observed to spread freely outside the self-accumulation region implying the Coulomb attraction does not matter in the ultrafast charge separation dynamics. These findings enable an appealing understanding of the high performance of emerging nonfullerene cells, and the designing rules of molecules and devices are then comprehensively discussed.

MVSNet: Depth Inference for Unstructured Multi-view Stereo

We present an end-to-end deep learning architecture for depth map inference from multi-view images. In the network, we first extract deep visual image features, and then build the 3D cost volume upon the reference camera frustum via the differentiable homography warping. Next, we apply 3D convolutions to regularize and regress the initial depth map, which is then refined with the reference image to generate the final output. Our framework flexibly adapts arbitrary N-view inputs using a variance-based cost metric that maps multiple features into one cost feature. The proposed MVSNet is demonstrated on the large-scale indoor DTU dataset. With simple post-processing, our method not only significantly outperforms previous state-of-the-arts, but also is several times faster in runtime. We also evaluate MVSNet on the complex outdoor Tanks and Temples dataset, where our method ranks first before April 18, 2018 without any fine-tuning, showing the strong generalization ability of MVSNet.

Pressure Dependence of Carbon Foam Bonding Strength using Reactive Film

Reactive bonding film is a relatively new method of fusing materials with the potential to meet needs of particle tracker mechanics under development due to its resulting tensile strength, thermal conductivity, radiation tolerance, and low mass. Employing a new apparatus to vary pressure applied to samples during bonding, we find improved ultimate tensile strengths compared with previous results.

Effects of loss on the phase sensitivity with parity detection in an SU(1,1) interferometer

We theoretically study the effects of loss on the phase sensitivity of an SU(1,1) interferometer with parity detection with various input states. We show that although the sensitivity of phase estimation decreases in the presence of loss, it can still beat the shot-noise limit with small loss. To examine the performance of parity detection, the comparison is performed among homodyne detection, intensity detection, and parity detection. Compared with homodyne detection and intensity detection, parity detection has a slight better optimal phase sensitivity in the absence of loss, but has a worse optimal phase sensitivity with a significant amount of loss with one-coherent state or coherent $\otimes$ squeezed state input.

Optimal Hybrid Full-Duplex/Half-Duplex Scheme for Buffer Aided Relay Systems

Full-duplex (FD) communication has received great interest in recent years due to the potential of doubling the spectral efficiency. However, how to alleviate the detrimental effects of the residual self-interference (RSI) incurred by the FD mode is still a challenging problem. In this paper, focusing on the statistical throughput maximization, we propose an optimal hybrid FD/half-duplex (HD) scheme for the one-way FD buffer aided relay system. To solve this problem, we divide the system into four different transmission modes and formulate the problem as a binary integer programming problem. By relaxing the binary variables to be continuous ones, we solve the problem using the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) optimal conditions. We obtain the selection probability of each mode based on the instantaneous channel outage states. The proposed scheme not only achieves the optimal FD or HD mode selection, but also realizes adaptive source-to-relay or relay-to-destination link selection. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme offers 95% maximum gain over the HD counterparts.

Market-based Control of Air-Conditioning Loads with Switching Constraints for Providing Ancillary Services

Air-conditioning loads (ACLs) are among the most promising demand side resources for their thermal storage capacity and fast response potential. This paper adopts the principle of market-based control (MBC) for the ACLs to participate in the ancillary services. The MBC method is suitable for the control of distributed ACLs because it can satisfy diversified requirements, reduce the communication bandwidth and protect users' privacy. The modified bidding and clearing strategies proposed in this paper makes it possible to adjust the switching frequency and strictly satisfy the lockout time constraint for mechanical wear reduction and device protection, without increasing the communication traffic and computational cost of the control center. The performance of the ACL cluster in two typical ancillary services is studied to demonstrate the effect of the proposed method. The case studies also investigate how the control parameters affect the response performance, comfort level and switching frequency.

Comment on "Unified view of quantum correlations and quantum coherence"

We show that contrary to what it is claimed in Phys. Rev. A \textbf{94}, 022329 (2016), in general the local projective measurement that induces maximal coherence loss is \textit{not} the projection onto the local basis that defines the coherence of the system, at least for all quantum-incoherent states.

Interpreting quantum coherence through a quantum measurement process

Recently, there has been a renewed interest in the quantification of coherence or other coherence-like concepts within the framework of quantum resource theory. However, rigorously defined or not, the notion of coherence or decoherence has already been used by the community for decades since the advent of quantum theory. Intuitively, the definitions of coherence and decoherence should be the two sides of the same coin. Therefore, a natural question is raised: how can the conventional decoherence processes, such as the von Neumann-Lüders (projective) measurement postulation or partially dephasing channels, fit into the bigger picture of the recently established theoretic framework? Here we show that the state collapse rules of the von Neumann or Lüders-type measurements, as special cases of genuinely incoherent operations (GIO), are consistent with the resource theories of quantum coherence. New hierarchical measures of coherence are proposed for the Lüders-type measurement and their relationship with measurement-dependent discord is addressed. Moreover, utilizing the fixed point theory for $C^\ast$-algebra, we prove that GIO indeed represent a particular type of partially dephasing (phase-damping) channels which have a matrix representation based on the Schur product. By virtue of the Stinespring's dilation theorem, the physical realizations of incoherent operations are investigated in detail and we find that GIO in fact constitute the core of strictly incoherent operations (SIO) and generally incoherent operations (IO) and the unspeakable notion of coherence induced by GIO can be transferred to the theories of speakable coherence by the corresponding permutation or relabeling operators.

Optimal Resource Allocation in Distributed Broadband Wireless Communication Systems

This paper is concerned with optimization of distributed broadband wireless communication (BWC) systems. BWC systems contain a distributed antenna system (DAS) connected to a base station with optical fiber. Distributed BWC systems have been proposed as a solution to the power constraint problem in traditional cellular networks. So far, the research on BWC systems have advanced on two separate tracks, the design of the system to meet the quality of service requirements (QoS) and optimization of the location of the DAS. In this paper, we consider a combined optimization of BWC systems. We consider uplink communications in distributed BWC systems with multiple levels of priority traffic with arrivals and departures forming renewal processes. We develop an analysis that determines packet delay violation probability for each priority level as a function of the outage probability of the DAS through the application of results from renewal theory. Then, we determine the optimal locations of the antennas that minimize the antenna outage probability. We also study the tradeoff between the packet delay violation probability and packet loss probability. This work will be helpful in the designing of the distributed BWC systems.

A Simple Two-stage Equalizer With Simplified Orthogonal Time Frequency Space Modulation Over Rapidly Time-varying Channels

In this work, we derive a equivalent delay-Doppler channel matrix of the Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) modulation that has not been studied in previous literature. It has the similar structure as the banded channel matrix of OFDM systems over rapidly time-varying channels. However, the band in the equivalent channel matrix will no longer spread with the increase of the Doppler spread once the length of maximum channel delay spread and the OTFS frame duration are deter- mined. Furthermore, the equivalent channel matrix can simplify the OTFS modulation in the transmitter side. Incorporating the equivalent channel matrix, we propose a simple two-stage equal- izer in 1 dimensional operations for OTFS modulation. First, the receive signal is equalized using the conventional OFDM single- tap equalizer in the frequency domain. The multipath effects can be removed. In the second stage, another low complexity delay- Doppler domain equalizer is employed to eliminate the effects of the residual interference caused by the Doppler spread with the equivalent channel matrix. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method is superior to the conventional single- tap equalizer and full minimum mean squared error (MMSE) equalizer of OFDM systems in terms of BER in high Doppler spread scenarios.

Retrieving the lost fermionic entanglement by partial measurement in noninertial frames

The initial entanglement shared between inertial and accelerated observers degrades due to the influence of the Unruh effect. Here, we show that the Unruh effect can be completely eliminated by the technique of partial measurement. The lost entanglement could be entirely retrieved or even amplified, which is dependent on whether the optimal strength of reversed measurement is \emph{state-independent} or \emph{state-dependent}. Our work provides a novel and unexpected method to recover the lost entanglement under Unruh decoherence and exhibits the ability of partial measurement as an important technique in relativistic quantum information.

Sensing Urban Land-Use Patterns By Integrating Google Tensorflow And Scene-Classification Models

With the rapid progress of China's urbanization, research on the automatic detection of land-use patterns in Chinese cities is of substantial importance. Deep learning is an effective method to extract image features. To take advantage of the deep-learning method in detecting urban land-use patterns, we applied a transfer-learning-based remote-sensing image approach to extract and classify features. Using the Google Tensorflow framework, a powerful convolution neural network (CNN) library was created. First, the transferred model was previously trained on ImageNet, one of the largest object-image data sets, to fully develop the model's ability to generate feature vectors of standard remote-sensing land-cover data sets (UC Merced and WHU-SIRI). Then, a random-forest-based classifier was constructed and trained on these generated vectors to classify the actual urban land-use pattern on the scale of traffic analysis zones (TAZs). To avoid the multi-scale effect of remote-sensing imagery, a large random patch (LRP) method was used. The proposed method could efficiently obtain acceptable accuracy (OA = 0.794, Kappa = 0.737) for the study area. In addition, the results show that the proposed method can effectively overcome the multi-scale effect that occurs in urban land-use classification at the irregular land-parcel level. The proposed method can help planners monitor dynamic urban land use and evaluate the impact of urban-planning schemes.

Beating maps of singlet fission: Full-quantum simulation of coherent two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy in organic aggregates

The coherent two-dimensional (2D) electronic spectra with respect to the singlet fission (SF) process in organic molecular aggregates are simulated by the Davydov ansatz combined with the Frenkel-Dirac time-dependent variational algorithm. By virtue of the full-quantum dynamical approach, we are able to identify the signals of triplet excitation in the excite-state absorption contribution of the 2D spectra. In order to discuss whether a mediative charge-transfer (CT) state is necessary to SF, we increase the CT-state energy and find, in a theoretical manner, the beating signal related to the triplet is inhibited. The vibronic coherence is then studied in the beating maps for both the ground and excited state. Except for the normal beating modes adhering to the relevant electronic state, we observe signals that are explicitly related to the triplet excitations. The pathways of transition corresponding to these signals are clarified in the respective Feynman diagram, which can help the experimenters determine the physical origin of relevant measurements.

Simulation of Urban Expansion and Farmland Loss in China by Integrating Cellular Automata and Random Forest

China has encountered serious land loss problems along with urban expansion due to rapid urbanization. Without considering complicated spatiotemporal heterogeneity, previous studies could not extract urban transition rules at large scale well. This study proposed a random forest algorithm (RFA) based cellular automata (CA) model to simulate China's urban expansion and farmland loss in a fine scale from 2000 to 2030. The objectives of this study are to 1) mine urban conversion rules in different homogeneous economic development regions, and 2) simulate China's urban expansion process and farmland loss at high spatial resolution (30 meters). Firstly, we clustered several homogeneous economic development regions among China according to official statistical data. Secondly, we constructed a RFA-based CA model to mine complex urban conversion rules and carried out simulation of urban expansion and farmland loss at each homo-region. The proposed model was implemented on Tianhe-1 supercomputer located in Guangzhou, China. The accuracy evaluation demonstrates that the simulation result of proposed RFA-based CA model is more in agreement with actual land use change. This study proves that the primary factor of farmland loss in China is rapid urbanization from 2000, and the farmland loss rate is expected to slow down gradually and will stabilize from 2010 to 2030. It shows that China is able to preserve the 1.20 million km farmland without crossing the "red line" within the next 20 years, but the situation remains severe.

Extracting urban impervious surface from GF-1 imagery using one-class classifiers

Impervious surface area is a direct consequence of the urbanization, which also plays an important role in urban planning and environmental management. With the rapidly technical development of remote sensing, monitoring urban impervious surface via high spatial resolution (HSR) images has attracted unprecedented attention recently. Traditional multi-classes models are inefficient for impervious surface extraction because it requires labeling all needed and unneeded classes that occur in the image exhaustively. Therefore, we need to find a reliable one-class model to classify one specific land cover type without labeling other classes. In this study, we investigate several one-class classifiers, such as Presence and Background Learning (PBL), Positive Unlabeled Learning (PUL), OCSVM, BSVM and MAXENT, to extract urban impervious surface area using high spatial resolution imagery of GF-1, China's new generation of high spatial remote sensing satellite, and evaluate the classification accuracy based on artificial interpretation results. Compared to traditional multi-classes classifiers (ANN and SVM), the experimental results indicate that PBL and PUL provide higher classification accuracy, which is similar to the accuracy provided by ANN model. Meanwhile, PBL and PUL outperforms OCSVM, BSVM, MAXENT and SVM models. Hence, the one-class classifiers only need a small set of specific samples to train models without losing predictive accuracy, which is supposed to gain more attention on urban impervious surface extraction or other one specific land cover type.

Enhanced quantum teleportation in the background of Schwarzschild spacetime by weak measurements

It is commonly believed that the fidelity of quantum teleportation in the gravitational field would be degraded due to the heat up by the Hawking radiation. In this paper, we point out that the Hawking effect could be eliminated by the combined action of pre- and post-weak measurements, and thus the teleportation fidelity is almost completely protected. It is intriguing to notice that the enhancement of fidelity could not be attributed to the improvement of entanglement, but rather to the probabilistic nature of weak measurements. Our work extends the ability of weak measurements as a quantum technique to battle against gravitational decoherence in relativistic quantum information.
