Transactive Control of Air Conditioning Loads for Mitigating Microgrid Tie-line Power Fluctuations

This paper presents a distributed control strategy for air conditioning loads (ACLs) to participate in the scheme of mitigating microgrid tie-line power fluctuations. The concept of baseline load is emphasized for ACL control in this paper. To obtain the target aggregated power of ACLs, an algorithm based on the principle of low-pass filter (LPF) is derived. For better robustness of the control strategy, feedback of the states of indoor temperatures is introduced for baseline load correction. A transactive control method is then put forward to allocate the target aggregated power to each ACL. This method can satisfy customers' differentiated requirements for comfort, protect the privacy and enhance the security of the controlled appliances. For the microgrid control center, it can simplify the downlink control and avoid measuring the power of uncontrolled loads which reduces the implementation cost. Simulation results shows ACLs can effectively provide microgrid tie-line smoothing services using the proposed method.

Maximal coherence in generic basis

Since quantum coherence is an undoubted characteristic trait of quantum physics, the quantification and application of quantum coherence has been one of the long-standing central topics in quantum information science. Within the framework of a resource theory of quantum coherence proposed recently, a \textit{fiducial basis} should be pre-selected for characterizing the quantum coherence in specific circumstances, namely, the quantum coherence is a \textit{basis-dependent} quantity. Therefore, a natural question is raised: what are the maximum and minimum coherences contained in a certain quantum state with respect to a generic basis? While the minimum case is trivial, it is not so intuitive to verify in which basis the quantum coherence is maximal. Based on the coherence measure of relative entropy, we indicate the particular basis in which the quantum coherence is maximal for a given state, where the Fourier matrix (or more generally, \textit{complex Hadamard matrices}) plays a critical role in determining the basis. Intriguingly, though we can prove that the basis associated with the Fourier matrix is a stationary point for optimizing the $l_1$ norm of coherence, numerical simulation shows that it is not a global optimal choice.

Polaronic quantum diffusion in dynamic localization regime

We investigate the quantum dynamics in a disordered electronic lattice with Fibonacci sequence of site energy and off-diagonal electron-phonon coupling within a sub-Ohmic bath by the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group algorithm. It is found that, the slope of the inverse participation ratio versus the coupling strength undergoes a sudden change indicating a transition from the static to the dynamic localization. In the dynamic localization regime, the generated polarons coherently diffuse via hopping-like processes evidenced by the saturated entanglement entropy, providing a novel scenario for the transportation mechanism in strongly disordered systems. The mean-square displacement is revealed to be insensitive to the coupling strength, implying the quantum diffusion behavior survives the energy disorder that prevails in real organic materials.

Interference Cancellation at Receivers in Cache-Enabled Wireless Networks

In this paper, we propose to exploit the limited cache packets as side information to cancel incoming interference at the receiver side. We consider a stochastic network where the random locations of base stations and users are modeled using Poisson point processes. Caching schemes to reap both the local caching gain and the interference cancellation gain for the users are developed based on two factors: the density of different user subsets and the packets cached in the corresponding subsets. The packet loss rate (PLR) is analyzed, which depends on both the cached packets and the channel state information (CSI) available at the receiver. Theoretical results reveal the tradeoff between caching resource and wireless resource. The performance for different caching schemes are analyzed and the minimum achievable PLR for the distributed caching is derived.

Energetic disorder induced leakage current in organic bulk heterojunction solar cells: comprehending the ultra-high open circuit voltage loss at low temperatures

In organic bulk heterojunction solar cells, the open circuit voltage ($V_\mathrm{oc}$) suffers from an ultra-high loss at low temperatures. In this work we investigate the origin of the loss through calculating the $V_\mathrm{oc}-T$ plots with the device model method systematically and comparing it with experimentally observed ones. When the energetic disorder is incorporated into the model by considering the disorder-suppressed and temperature-dependent charge carrier mobilities, it is found that for nonselective contacts the $V_\mathrm{oc}$ reduces drastically under the low temperature regime, while for selective contacts the $V_\mathrm{oc}$ keeps increasing with the decreasing temperature. The main reason is revealed that as the temperature decreases, the reduced mobilities give rise to low charge extraction efficiency and small bimolecular recombination rate for the photogenerated charge carriers, so that in the former case they can be extracted from the wrong electrode to form a leakage current which counteracts the photocurrent and increases quickly with voltage, leading to the anomalous reduction of $V_\mathrm{oc}$. In addition, it is revealed that the charge generation rate is slow-varying with temperature and does not induce significant $V_\mathrm{oc}$ loss. This work also provides a comprehensive picture for the $V_\mathrm{oc}$ behavior under varying device working conditions.

Robust quantum state transfer between two superconducting qubits via partial measurement

We develop a potentially practical proposal for robust quantum state transfer (QST) between two superconducting qubits coupled by a coplanar waveguide (CPW) resonator. We show that the partial measurement could drastically enhance the fidelity even when the dissipation of qubits and CPW is considered. Unlike many other schemes for QST, our proposal does not require the couplings between the qubits and the CPW resonator to be strong. In fact, our method works much more efficiently in the weak coupling regime. The underlying mechanism is attributed to the probabilistic nature of partial measurement.

Detecting macroscopic quantum coherence with a cavity optomechanical system

The rigorous resource framework of quantum coherence has been set up recently and excited a wide variety of interests. Here we show that a quantum cavity optomechanical system, as an emerging platform, can behave with a certain value of quantum coherence at a macroscopic scale. We also find that the difference between the total optomechanical coherence and the sum of the optical and the mechanical coherence just equals their mutual information. Motivated by the detection of the optomechanical entanglement, an experimentally feasible scheme to probe the optomechanical coherence is proposed.

Modeling and Analysis for Cache-enabled Cognitive D2D Communications in Cellular Networks

Exploiting cognition to the cache-enabled device-to-device (D2D) communication underlaying the multi-channel cellular network is the main focus of this paper. D2D pairs perform direct communications via sensing the available cellular channels, bypassing the base station (BS). Dynamic service is considered and the network performance is evaluated with the stochastic geometry. Node locations are first modeled as mutually independent Poisson Point Processes, and the service queueing process is formulated. Then the corresponding tier association and cognitive access protocol are developed. The delay and the length for the queue at the BS and D2D transmitter are further elaborated, with modeling the traffic dynamics of request arrivals and departures as the discrete-time multiserver queue with priorities. Moreover, impacts of the physical layer and content-centric features on the system performance are jointly investigated to provide a valuable insight.

Quantum cloning attacks against PUF-based quantum authentication systems

With the advent of Physical Unclonable Functions (PUFs), PUF-based quantum authentication systems (QAS) have been proposed for security purposes and recently proof-of-principle experiment has been demonstrated. As a further step towards completing the security analysis, we investigate quantum cloning attacks against PUF-based quantum authentication systems and prove that quantum cloning attacks outperform the so-called challenge-estimation attacks. We present the analytical expression of the false accept probability by use of the corresponding optimal quantum cloning machines and extend the previous results in the literature. In light of these findings, an explicit comparison is made between PUF-based quantum authentication systems and quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols in the context of cloning attacks. Moreover, from an experimental perspective, a trade-off between the average photon number and the detection efficiency is discussed in detail.

Frobenius-norm-based measures of quantum coherence and asymmetry

We formulate the Frobenius-norm-based measures for quantum coherence and asymmetry respectively. In contrast to the resource theory of coherence and asymmetry, we construct a natural measure of quantum coherence inspired from optical coherence theory while the group theoretical approach is employed to quantify the asymmetry of quantum states. Besides their simple structures and explicit physical meanings, we observe that these quantities are intimately related to the purity (or linear entropy) of the corresponding quantum states. Remarkably, we demonstrate that the proposed coherence quantifier is not only a measure of mixedness, but also an intrinsic (basis-independent) quantification of quantum coherence contained in quantum states, which can also be viewed as a normalized version of Brukner-Zeilinger invariant information. In our context, the asymmetry of N-qubit quantum systems is considered under local independent and collective SU(2) transformations. Intriguingly, it is illustrated that the collective effect has a significant impact on the asymmetry measure, and quantum correlation between subsystems plays a non-negligible role in this circumstance.

Congested aggregation via Newtonian interaction

We consider a congested aggregation model that describes the evolution of a density through the competing effects of nonlocal Newtonian attraction and a hard height constraint. This provides a counterpoint to existing literature on repulsive-attractive nonlocal interaction models, where the repulsive effects instead arise from an interaction kernel or the addition of diffusion. We formulate our model as the Wasserstein gradient flow of an interaction energy, with a penalization to enforce the constraint on the height of the density. From this perspective, the problem can be seen as a singular limit of the Keller-Segel equation with degenerate diffusion. Two key properties distinguish our problem from previous work on height constrained equations: nonconvexity of the interaction kernel (which places the model outside the scope of classical gradient flow theory) and nonlocal dependence of the velocity field on the density (which causes the problem to lack a comparison principle). To overcome these obstacles, we combine recent results on gradient flows of nonconvex energies with viscosity solution theory. We characterize the dynamics of patch solutions in terms of a Hele-Shaw type free boundary problem and, using this characterization, show that in two dimensions patch solutions converge to a characteristic function of a disk in the long-time limit, with explicit rate of convergence. We believe that a key contribution of the present work is our blended approach, combining energy methods with viscosity solution theory.

Protecting entanglement from correlated amplitude damping channel using weak measurement and quantum measurement reversal

Based on the quantum technique of weak measurement, we propose a scheme to protect the entanglement from correlated amplitude damping decoherence. In contrast to the results of memoryless amplitude damping channel, we show that the memory effects play a significant role in the suppression of entanglement sudden death and protection of entanglement under severe decoherence. Moreover, we find that the initial entanglement could be drastically amplified by the combination of weak measurement and quantum measurement reversal even under the correlated amplitude damping channel. The underlying mechanism can be attributed to the probabilistic nature of weak measurements.

Optimal quantum parameter estimation in a pulsed quantum optomechanical system

We propose that a pulsed quantum optomechanical system can be applied for the problem of quantum parameter estimation, which targets to yield higher precision of parameter estimation utilizing quantum resource than that using classical methods. Mainly concentrating on the quantum Fisher information with respect to the mechanical frequency, we find that the corresponding precision of parameter estimation on the mechanical frequency can be enhanced by applying applicable optical resonant pulsed driving on the cavity of the optome- chanical system. Further investigation shows that the mechanical squeezing resulting from the optical pulsed driving is the quantum resource used in optimal quantum estimation on the frequency.

Enhancing teleportation of quantum Fisher information by partial measurements

The purport of quantum teleportation is to completely transfer information from one party to another distant partner. However, from the perspective of parameter estimation, it is the information carried by a particular parameter, not the information of total quantum state that needs to be teleported. Due to the inevitable noise in environment, we propose two schemes to enhance quantum Fisher information (QFI) teleportation under amplitude damping noise with the technique of partial measurements. We find that post partial measurement can greatly enhance the teleported QFI, while the combination of prior partial measurement and post partial measurement reversal could completely eliminate the effect of decoherence. We show that, somewhat consequentially, enhancing QFI teleportation is more economic than that of improving fidelity teleportation. Our work extends the ability of partial measurements as a quantum technique to battle decoherence in quantum information processing.

Coherent dynamics of singlet fission controlled by nonlocal electron-phonon coupling

Based on the Frenkel-charge transfer (CT) mixing model of singlet fission (SF), we incorporate both the local and nonlocal phonon baths in the Hamiltonian and adopt the algorithm of time-dependent density matrix renormalization group to simulate the fission process in tetracene. The endergonic SF is found to be facilitated by the robust quantum coherence, which concurrently gives rise to a notable quantum beating effect. Controlled by the nonlocal electron-phonon coupling, the density of triplet yield manifests a nonlinear relationship with the singlet density. As a result, the fission rate in tetracene is explicitly obtained, which is in agreement with the experimental measurement.

Local regularity for the modified SQG patch equation

We study the patch dynamics on the whole plane and on the half-plane for a family of active scalars called modified SQG equations. These involve a parameter $α$ which appears in the power of the kernel in their Biot-Savart laws and describes the degree of regularity of the equation. The values $α=0$ and $α=\frac 12$ correspond to the 2D Euler and SQG equations, respectively. We establish here local-in-time regularity for these models, for all $α\in(0,\frac 12)$ on the whole plane and for all small $α>0$ on the half-plane. We use the latter result in [16], where we show existence of regular initial data on the half-plane which lead to a finite time singularity.

Finite time singularity formation for the modified SQG patch equation

It is well known that the incompressible Euler equations in two dimensions have globally regular solutions. The inviscid surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation has a Biot-Savart law which is one derivative less regular than in the Euler case, and the question of global regularity for its solutions is still open. We study here the patch dynamics in the half-plane for a family of active scalars which interpolates between these two equations, via a parameter $α\in[0,\frac 12]$ appearing in the kernels of their Biot-Savart laws. The values $α=0$ and $α=\frac 12$ correspond to the 2D Euler and SQG cases, respectively. We prove global in time regularity for the 2D Euler patch model, even if the patches initially touch the boundary of the half-plane. On the other hand, for any sufficiently small $α>0$, we exhibit initial data which lead to a singularity in finite time. Thus, these results show a phase transition in the behavior of solutions to these equations, and provide a rigorous foundation for classifying the 2D Euler equations as critical.
