Spectroscopic Evidence on Realization of a Genuine Topological Nodal Line Semimetal in LaSbTe

The nodal line semimetals have attracted much attention due to their unique topological electronic structure and exotic physical properties. A genuine nodal line semimetal is qualified by the presence of Dirac nodes along a line in the momentum space that are protected against the spin-orbit coupling. In addition, it requires that the Dirac points lie close to the Fermi level allowing to dictate the macroscopic physical properties. Although the material realization of nodal line semimetals have been theoretically predicted in numerous compounds, only a few of them have been experimentally verified and the realization of a genuine nodal line semimetal is particularly rare. Here we report the realization of a genuine nodal line semimetal in LaSbTe. We investigated the electronic structure of LaSbTe by band structure calculations and angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements. Taking spin-orbit coupling into account, our band structure calculations predict that a nodal line is formed in the boundary surface of the Brillouin zone which is robust and lies close to the Fermi level. The Dirac nodes along the X-R line in momentum space are directly observed in our ARPES measurements and the energies of these Dirac nodes are all close to the Fermi level. These results constitute clear evidence that LaSbTe is a genuine nodal line semimetal, providing a new platform to explore for novel phenomena and possible applications associated with the nodal line semimetals.

Spin dynamics in NaFeAs and NaFe$_{0.53}$Cu$_{0.47}$As probed by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering

The parent compounds of iron-based superconductors are magnetically-ordered bad metals, with superconductivity appearing near a putative magnetic quantum critical point. The presence of both Hubbard repulsion and Hund's coupling leads to rich physics in these multiorbital systems, and motivated descriptions of magnetism in terms of itinerant electrons or localized spins. The NaFe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$As series consists of magnetically-ordered bad metal ($x=0$), superconducting ($x\approx0.02$) and magnetically-ordered semiconducing/insulating ($x\approx0.5$) phases, providing a platform to investigate the connection between superconductivity, magnetism and electronic correlations. Here we use X-ray absorption spectroscopy and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering to study the valence state of Fe and spin dynamics in two NaFe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$As compounds ($x=0$ and 0.47). We find that magnetism in both compounds arises from Fe$^{2+}$ atoms, and exhibits underdamped dispersive spin waves in their respective ordered states. The dispersion of spin excitations in NaFe$_{0.53}$Cu$_{0.47}$As is consistent with being quasi-one-dimensional. Compared to NaFeAs, the band top of spin waves in NaFe$_{0.53}$Cu$_{0.47}$As is slightly softened with significantly more spectral weight of the spin excitations. Our results indicate the spin dynamics in NaFe$_{0.53}$Cu$_{0.47}$As arise from localized magnetic moments and suggest the iron-based superconductors are proximate to a correlated insulating state with localized iron moments.

Evidence of topological nodal lines and surface states in the centrosymmetric superconductor SnTaS2

The discovery of signatures of topological superconductivity in superconducting bulk materials with topological surface states has attracted intensive research interests recently. Utilizing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, here, we demonstrate the existence of topological nodal-line states and drumheadlike surface states in centrosymmetric superconductor SnTaS2, which is a type-II superconductor with a critical transition temperature of about 3 K. The valence bands from Ta 5d orbitals and the conduction bands from Sn 5p orbitals cross each other, forming two nodal lines in the vicinity of the Fermi energy without the inclusion of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), protected by the spatial-inversion symmetry and time-reversal symmetry. The nodal lines are gapped out by SOC. The drumheadlike surface states, the typical characteristics in nodal-line semimetals, are quite visible near the Fermi level. Our findings indicate that SnTaS2 offers a promising platform for exploring the exotic properties of the topological nodal-line fermions and gives a help to study topological superconductivity.

Creation of a novel inverted charge density wave state

Charge density wave (CDW) order is an emergent quantum phase that is characterized by a periodic lattice distortion and charge density modulation, often present near superconducting transitions. Here we uncover a novel inverted CDW state by using a femtosecond laser to coherently over-drive the unique star-of-David lattice distortion in 1T-TaSe$_2$. We track the signature of this novel CDW state using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and time-dependent density functional theory, and validate that it is associated with a unique lattice and charge arrangement never before realized. The dynamic electronic structure further reveals its novel properties, that are characterized by an increased density of states near the Fermi level, high metallicity, and altered electron-phonon couplings. Our results demonstrate how ultrafast lasers can be used to create unique states in materials, by manipulating charge-lattice orders and couplings.

Description of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering in correlated metals

To fully capitalize on the potential and versatility of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), it is essential to develop the capability to interpret different RIXS contributions through calculations, including the dependence on momentum transfer, from first-principles for correlated materials. Toward that objective, we present new methodology for calculating the full RIXS response of a correlated metal in an unbiased fashion. Through comparison of measurements and calculations that tune the incident photon energy over a wide portion of the Fe L$_3$ absorption resonance of the example material BaFe$_2$As$_2$, we show that the RIXS response in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ is dominated by the direct channel contribution, including the Raman-like response below threshold, which we explain as a consequence of the finite core-hole lifetime broadening. Calculations are initially performed within the first-principles Bethe-Salpeter framework, which we then significantly improve by convolution with an effective spectral function for the intermediate-state excitation. We construct this spectral function, also from first-principles, by employing the cumulant expansion of the Green's function and performing a real-time time dependent density functional theory calculation of the response of the electronic system to the perturbation of the intermediate-state excitation. Importantly, this allows us to evaluate the indirect RIXS response from first-principles, accounting for the full periodicity of the crystal structure and with dependence on the momentum transfer.

Orbital-selective Dirac fermions and extremely flat bands in frustrated kagome-lattice metal CoSn

Layered kagome-lattice 3d transition metals are emerging as an exciting platform to explore the frustrated lattice geometry and quantum topology. However, the typical kagome electronic bands, characterized by sets of the Dirac-like band capped by a phase-destructive flat band, have not been clearly observed, and their orbital physics are even less well investigated. Here, we present close-to-textbook kagome bands with orbital differentiation physics in CoSn, which can be well described by a minimal tight-binding model with single-orbital hopping in Co kagome lattice. The capping flat bands with bandwidth less than 0.2 eV run through the whole Brillouin zone, especially the bandwidth of the flat band of out-of-plane orbitals is less than 0.02 eV along G-M. The energy gap induced by spin-orbit interaction at the Dirac cone of out-of-plane orbitals is much smaller than that of in-plane orbitals, suggesting orbital-selective character of the Dirac fermions.

Anisotropic gapping of topological Weyl rings in the charge-density-wave superconductor InxTaSe2

Topological materials and topological phases have recently become a hot topic in condensed matter physics. In this work, we report a topological nodal-line semimetal InxTaSe2, in the presence of both charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity. In the x = 0.58 samples, the 2 * /3 commensurate CDW (CCDW) and the 2 * 2 CCDW are observed below 116 K and 77 K, respectively. Consistent with theoretical calculations, the spin-orbital coupling gives rise to two two-fold-degenerate nodal rings (Weyl rings) connected by drumhead surface states, confirmed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our results suggest that the 2 * 2 CCDW ordering gaps out one Weyl ring in accordance with the CDW band folding, while the other Weyl ring remains gapless with intact surface states. In addition, superconductivity emerges at 0.91 K, with the upper critical field deviating from the s-wave behavior at low temperature, implying possibly unconventional superconductivity. Therefore, InxTaSe2 represents an interesting material system to study the interplay between CDW, nontrivial band topology and superconductivity.

Dirac Fermions in Antiferromagnetic FeSn Kagome Lattices with Combined Space Inversion and Time Reversal Symmetry

Symmetry principles play a critical role in formulating the fundamental laws of nature, with a large number of symmetry-protected topological states identified in recent studies of quantum materials. As compelling examples, massless Dirac fermions are jointly protected by the space inversion symmetry $P$ and time reversal symmetry $T$ supplemented by additional crystalline symmetry, while evolving into Weyl fermions when either $P$ or $T$ is broken. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we reveal that massless Dirac fermions are present in a layered FeSn crystal containing antiferromagnetically coupled ferromagnetic Fe kagome layers, where each of the $P$ and $T$ symmetries is individually broken but the combined $PT$ symmetry is preserved. These stable Dirac fermions protected by the combined $PT$ symmetry with additional non-symmorphic $S_{\rm{2z}}$ symmetry can be transformed to either massless/massive Weyl or massive Dirac fermions by breaking the $PT$ or $S_{\rm{2z}}$ symmetry. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments indeed observed the Dirac states in the bulk and two-dimensional Weyl-like states at the surface. The present study substantially enriches our fundamental understanding of the intricate connections between symmetries and topologies of matter, especially with the spin degree of freedom playing a vital role.

Reciprocity between local moments and collective magnetic excitations in the phase diagram of BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$

Unconventional superconductivity arises at the border between the strong coupling regime with local magnetic moments and the weak coupling regime with itinerant electrons, and stems from the physics of criticality that dissects the two. Unveiling the nature of the quasiparticles close to quantum criticality is fundamental to understand the phase diagram of quantum materials. Here, using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and Fe-K$_β$ emission spectroscopy (XES), we visualize the coexistence and evolution of local magnetic moments and collective spin excitations across the superconducting dome in isovalently-doped BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ (0.00$\leq$x$\leq0.$52). Collective magnetic excitations resolved by RIXS are gradually hardened, whereas XES reveals a strong suppression of the local magnetic moment upon doping. This relationship is captured by an intermediate coupling theory, explicitly accounting for the partially localized and itinerant nature of the electrons in Fe pnictides. Finally, our work identifies a local-itinerant spin fluctuations channel through which the local moments transfer spin excitations to the particle-hole (paramagnons) continuum across the superconducting dome.

Flat band magnetism and helical magnetic order in Ni-doped SrCo$_2$As$_2$

A series of Sr(Co$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals was synthesized allowing a comprehensive phase diagram with respect to field, temperature, and chemical substitution to be established. Our neutron diffraction experiments revealed a helimagnetic order with magnetic moments ferromagnetically (FM) aligned in the $ab$ plane and a helimagnetic wavevector of $q=(0,0,0.56)$ for $x$ = 0.1. The combination of neutron diffraction and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements show that the tuning of a flat band with $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital character drives the helimagnetism and indicates the possibility of a quantum order-by-disorder mechanism.

Coexistence of ferromagnetic and stripe antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in SrCo$_2$As$_2$

We use inelastic neutron scattering to study energy and wave vector dependence of spin fluctuations in SrCo$_2$As$_2$, derived from SrFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ iron pnictide superconductors. Our data reveals the coexistence of antiferromagnetic (AF) and ferromagnetic (FM) spin fluctuations at wave vectors $\textbf{Q}_{\rm AF}$=(1,0) and $\textbf{Q}_{\rm FM}$=(0,0)/(2,0), respectively. By comparing neutron scattering results with those of dynamic mean field theory calculation and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments, we conclude that both AF and FM spin fluctuations in SrCo$_2$As$_2$ are closely associated with a flat band of the $e_g$ orbitals near the Fermi level, different from the $t_{2g}$ orbitals in superconducting SrFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$. Therefore, Co-substitution in SrFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ induces a $t_{2g}$ to $e_g$ orbital switching, and is responsible for FM spin fluctuations detrimental to the singlet pairing superconductivity.

Experimental observation of bulk nodal lines and electronic surface states in ZrB$_2$

Topological nodal-line semimetals are characterized by the line-contact bulk band crossings and the topological surface states. Breaking certain protecting symmetry turns this system into a Dirac semimetal or Weyl semimetal that hosts zero-dimensional isolated nodal points. Recent advances in band theory predicted a topological nodal-line semimetal state possessing a new type of nodal line in AlB$_2$-type diborides. Here, we report an experimental realization of nodal-line fermions and associated surface states near the Fermi energy in ZrB$_2$ by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with first-principles calculations. The Dirac nodal lines in ZrB$_2$ wind into two groups of nodal rings, which are linked together along the $Γ$-$K$ direction. We further observe a distinct surface state connecting to each nodal line, indicative of the nontrivial topological nature of the bulk nodal lines. Therefore, our results provide convincing experimental evidence of the nodal-line semimetal states in ZrB$_2$ both in the bulk and on the surface, suggesting ZrB$_2$ as a remarkable platform for discovering unique phenomena induced by nodal-line fermions.

Large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect in half-metallic ferromagnet Co3Sn2S2 with magnetic Weyl fermions

The origin of anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in magnetic materials is one of the most intriguing aspect in condensed matter physics and has been controversial for a long time. Recent studies indicate that the intrinsic AHE is closely related to the Berry curvature of occupied electronic states. In a magnetic Weyl semimetal with broken time-reversal symmetry, there are significant contributions on Berry curvature around Weyl nodes, which would lead to a large intrinsic AHE. Here, we report the large intrinsic AHE in the half-metallic ferromagnet Co3Sn2S2 single crystal. By systematically mapping out the electronic structure of Co3Sn2S2 theoretically and experimentally, the large intrinsic AHE should originate from the Weyl fermions near the Fermi energy. Furthermore, the intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity depends linearly on the magnetization and this can be attributed to the sharp decrease of magnetization and the change of topological characteristics.

Dispersive Magnetic and Electronic Excitations in Iridate Perovskites Probed with Oxygen $K$-Edge Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments performed at the oxygen-$K$ edge on the iridate perovskites {\SIOS} and {\SION} reveal a sequence of well-defined dispersive modes over the energy range up to $\sim 0.8$ eV. The momentum dependence of these modes and their variation with the experimental geometry allows us to assign each of them to specific collective magnetic and/or electronic excitation processes, including single and bi-magnons, and spin-orbit and electron-hole excitons. We thus demonstrated that dispersive magnetic and electronic excitations are observable at the O-$K$ edge in the presence of the strong spin-orbit coupling in the $5d$ shell of iridium and strong hybridization between Ir $5d$ and O $2p$ orbitals, which confirm and expand theoretical expectations. More generally, our results establish the utility of O-$K$ edge RIXS for studying the collective excitations in a range of $5d$ materials that are attracting increasing attention due to their novel magnetic and electronic properties. Especially, the strong RIXS response at O-$K$ edge opens up the opportunity for investigating collective excitations in thin films and heterostructures fabricated from these materials.

Realization of low-energy Dirac fermions in (Ir$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$)Te$_2$ superconductors

Superconducting and topological states are two distinct quantum states of matter. Superconductors with topologically nontrivial electronic states provide a platform to study the interplay between them. Recent study revealed that a bulk superconductor PdTe2 is a topological Dirac semimetal with type-II Dirac fermions. However, the Dirac fermions in PdTe2 have no contribution to the superconducting pair because the Dirac points reside far below the Fermi level (EF). Here, we show that in the isostructural compounds (Ir1-xPtx)Te2, the type-II Dirac points can be adjusted to EF by element substitution at x ~ 0.1, for which the bulk superconductivity appears near 2 K. The (Ir1-xPtx)Te2 superconductor with the Dirac points at EF paves the way for studying the relevant exotic physical phenomena such as topological superconductivity in Dirac semimetals.

Observation of bulk nodal lines in topological semimetal ZrSiS

ZrSiS is the most intensively studied topological nodal-line semimetal candidate, which is proposed to host multiple nodal lines in its bulk electronic structure. However, previous angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments with vacuum ultraviolet lights mainly probed the surface states. Here using bulk-sensitive soft X-ray ARPES, we acquire the bulk electronic states of ZrSiS without any interference from surface states. Our results clearly show two groups of three-dimensional bulk nodal lines located on high-symmetry planes and along high-symmetry lines in the bulk Brillouin zone, respectively. The nodal lines on high-symmetry planes are enforced to pin at the Fermi level by carrier compensation and constitute the whole Fermi surfaces. This means that the carriers in ZrSiS are entirely contributed by nodal-line fermions, suggesting that ZrSiS is a remarkable platform for studying physical properties related to nodal lines.

Presence of magnetic excitations in SmFeAsO

We measured dispersive spin excitations in $\mathrm{SmFeAsO}$, parent compound of $\mathrm{SmFeAsO_{\text{1-x}}F_{\text{x}}}$ one of the highest temperature superconductors of Fe pnictides (T$_{\text{C}}\approx$55~K). We determine the magnetic excitations to disperse with a bandwidth energy of ca 170 meV at (0.47, 0) and (0.34, 0.34), which merges into the elastic line approaching the $Γ$ point. Comparing our results with other parent Fe pnictides, we show the importance of structural parameters for the magnetic excitation spectrum, with small modifications of the tetrahedron angles and As height strongly affecting the magnetism.

Intra-layer doping effects on the high-energy magnetic correlations in NaFeAs

We have used Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) and dynamical susceptibility calculations to study the magnetic excitations in NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As (x = 0, 0.03, and 0.08). Despite a relatively low ordered magnetic moment, collective magnetic modes are observed in parent compounds (x = 0) and persist in optimally (x = 0.03) and overdoped (x = 0.08) samples. Their magnetic bandwidths are unaffected by doping within the range investigated. High energy magnetic excitations in iron pnictides are robust against doping, and present irrespectively of the ordered magnetic moment. Nevertheless, Co doping slightly reduces the overall magnetic spectral weight, differently from previous studies on hole-doped BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, where it was observed constant. Finally, we demonstrate that the doping evolution of magnetic modes is different for the dopants being inside or outside the Fe-As layer.
