Spin and Charge Pumping by Ferromagnetic-Superconductor Order Parameters

We study transport in ferromagnetic-superconductor/normal-metal systems. It is shown that charge and spin currents are pumped from ferromagnetic superconductors into adjacent normal metals by adiabatic changes in the order parameters induced by external electromagnetic fields. Spin and charge pumping identify the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter, e.g., singlet pairing or triplet pairing with opposite or equal spin pairing. Consequences for ferromagnetic-resonance experiments are discussed.

Mean-field magnetization relaxation in conducting ferromagnets

Collective ferromagnetic motion in a conducting medium is damped by the transfer of the magnetic moment and energy to the itinerant carriers. We present a calculation of the corresponding magnetization relaxation as a linear-response problem for the carrier dynamics in the effective exchange field of the ferromagnet. In electron systems with little intrinsic spin-orbit interaction, a uniform magnetization motion can be formally eliminated by going into the rotating frame of reference for the spin dynamics. The ferromagnetic damping in this case grows linearly with the spin-flip rate when the latter is smaller than the exchange field and is inversely proportional to the spin-flip rate in the opposite limit. These two regimes are analogous to the "spin-pumping" and the "breathing Fermi-surface" damping mechanisms, respectively. In diluted ferromagnetic semiconductors, the hole-mediated magnetization can be efficiently relaxed to the itinerant-carrier degrees of freedom due to the strong spin-orbit interaction in the valence bands.

Many-body dispersions in interacting ballistic quantum wires

We have measured the collective excitation spectrum of interacting electrons in one-dimension. The experiment consists of controlling the energy and momentum of electrons tunneling between two clean and closely situated, parallel quantum wires in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure while measuring the resulting conductance. We measure excitation spectra that clearly deviate from the non-interacting spectrum, attesting to the importance of Coulomb interactions. Notable is an observed 30% enhancement of the velocity of the main excitation branch relative to non-interacting electrons with the same density. In short wires, finite size effects resulting from broken translational invariance are observed. Spin - charge separation is manifested through moire patterns, reflecting different spin and charge excitation velocities.

Signatures of spin-charge separation in double--quantum-wire tunneling

We present evidence for spin-charge separation in the tunneling spectrum of a system consisting of two quantum wires connected by a long narrow tunnel junction at the edge of a GaAs/AlGaAs bilayer heterostructure. Multiple excitation velocities are detected in the system by tracing out electron spectral peaks in the conductance dependence on the applied voltage, governing the energy of tunneled electrons, and the magnetic field, governing the momentum shift along the wires. The boundaries of the wires are important and lead to a characteristic interference pattern in measurements on short junctions. We show that the experimentally observed modulation of the conductance oscillation amplitude as a function of the voltage bias can also be accounted for by spin-charge separation of the elementary excitations in the interacting wires.

Magnetoelectronic Spin Echo

We predict a spin echo in electron transport through layered ferromagnetic-normal-ferromagnetic metal structures: whereas a spin current polarized perpendicular to the magnetization direction decays when traversing a single homogeneous ferromagnet on the scale of the ferromagnetic spin-coherence length, it reappears by adding a second identical but antiparallel ferromagnet. This re-entrant transverse spin current resembles the spin-echo effect in the magnetization of nuclei under pulsed excitations. We propose an experimental setup to measure the magnetoelectronic spin echo.

Spin detection in quantum dots by electric currents

We develop a theoretical description of transport through quantum dots connected to reservoirs via spin-polarized ballistic contacts. Rate equations account for spin accumulation inside the dot, electron-electron interactions, and stochastic fluctuations. It is shown that both the ac response (admittance) and the frequency-dependent shot noise are governed by spin-flip scattering, which can be used to detect spin polarization and spin-flip processes in the dot.

Capillary forces in the acoustics of patchy-saturated porous media

A linearized theory of the acoustics of porous elastic formations, such as rocks, saturated with two different viscous fluids is generalized to take into account a pressure discontinuity across the fluid boundaries. The latter can arise due to the surface tension of the membrane separating the fluids. We show that the frequency-dependent bulk modulus $\tilde{K}(ω)$ for wave lengths longer than the characteristic structural dimensions of the fluid patches has a similar analytic behavior as in the case of a vanishing membrane stiffness and depends on the same parameters of the fluid-distribution topology. The effect of the capillary stiffness can be accounted by renormalizing the coefficients of the leading terms in the low-frequency asymptotic of $\tilde{K}(ω)$.

Dynamic ferromagnetic proximity effect in photoexcited semiconductors

The spin dynamics of photoexcited carriers in semiconductors in contact with a ferromagnet is treated theoretically and compared with time-dependent Faraday rotation experiments. The long time response of the system is found to be governed by the first tens of picoseconds in which the excited plasma interacts strongly with the intrinsic interface between semiconductor and ferromagnet in spite of the existence of a Schottky barrier in equilibrium.

Interference and zero-bias anomaly in tunneling between Luttinger-liquid wires

We present theoretical calculations and experimental measurements which reveal the Luttinger-liquid (LL) nature of elementary excitations in a system consisting of two quantum wires connected by a long narrow tunnel junction at the edge of a GaAs/AlGaAs bilayer heterostructure. The boundaries of the wires are important and lead to a characteristic interference pattern in measurements on short junctions. We show that the experimentally observed modulation of the conductance oscillation amplitude as a function of the voltage bias can be accounted for by spin-charge separation of the elementary excitations in the interacting wires. Furthermore, boundaries affect the LL exponents of the voltage and temperature dependence of the tunneling conductance at low energies. We show that the measured temperature dependence of the conductance zero-bias dip as well as the voltage modulation of the conductance oscillation pattern can be used to extract the electron interaction parameters in the wires.

Dynamic exchange coupling in magnetic bilayers

A long-ranged dynamic interaction between ferromagnetic films separated by normal-metal spacers is reported, which is communicated by nonequilibrium spin currents. It is measured by ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and explained by an adiabatic spin-pump theory. In FMR the spin-pump mechanism of spatially separated magnetic moments leads to an appreciable increase in the FMR line width when the resonance fields are well apart, and results in a dramatic line-width narrowing when the FMR fields approach each other.

Dynamic stiffness of spin valves

The dynamics of the magnetic order parameters of ferromagnet/normal-metal/ferromagnet spin valves and isolated ferromagnets may be very different. We investigate the role of the nonequilibrium spin-current exchange between the ferromagnets in the magnetization precession and switching. We find a (low-temperature) critical current bias for a coherent current-induced magnetization excitation in spin valves, which unifies and generalizes previous ideas of Slonczewski and Berger. In the absence of an applied bias, the effect of the spin transfer can be expressed as magnetic--configuration-dependent Gilbert damping.

The spin-torque transistor

A magnetoelectronic thin-film transistor is proposed that can display negative differential resistance and gain. The working principle is the modulation of the soure-drain current in a spin valve by the magnetization of a third electrode, which is rotated by the spin-torque created by a control spin-valve. The device can operate at room temperature, but in order to be useful, ferromagnetic materials with polarizations close to unity are required.

From Digital to Analogue Magnetoelectronics: Theory of Transport in Non-Collinear Magnetic Nanostructures

Magnetoelectronics is mainly digital, i.e. governed by up and down magnetizations. In contrast, analogue magnetoelectronics makes use of phenomena occuring for non-collinear magnetization configurations. Here we review theories which have recently been applied to the transport in non-collinear magnetic nanostructures in two and multiterminal structures, viz. random matrix and circuit theory. Both are not valid for highly transparent systems in a resistive environment like perpendicular metallic spin valves. The solution to this problem is a renormalization of the conventional and spin-mixing conductance parameters.

Dynamic exchange coupling and Gilbert damping in magnetic multilayers

We theoretically study dynamic properties of thin ferromagnetic films in contact with normal metals. Moving magnetizations cause a flow of spins into adjacent conductors, which relax by spin flip, scatter back into the ferromagnet, or are absorbed by another ferromagnet. Relaxation of spins outside the moving magnetization enhances the overall damping of the magnetization dynamics in accordance with the Gilbert phenomenology. Transfer of spins between different ferromagnets by these nonequilibrium spin currents leads to a long-ranged dynamic exchange interaction and novel collective excitation modes. Our predictions agree well with recent ferromagnetic-resonance experiments on ultrathin magnetic films.

Monte Carlo Evaluation of Non-Abelian Statistics

We develop a general framework to (numerically) study adiabatic braiding of quasiholes in fractional quantum Hall systems. Specifically, we investigate the Moore-Read (MR) state at $ν=1/2$ filling factor, a known candidate for non-Abelian statistics, which appears to actually occur in nature. The non-Abelian statistics of MR quasiholes is demonstrated explicitly for the first time, confirming the results predicted by conformal field theories.

Spin pumping and magnetization dynamics in metallic multilayers

We study the magnetization dynamics in thin ferromagnetic films and small ferromagnetic particles in contact with paramagnetic conductors. A moving magnetization vector causes \textquotedblleft pumping\textquotedblright of spins into adjacent nonmagnetic layers. This spin transfer affects the magnetization dynamics similar to the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert phenomenology. The additional Gilbert damping is significant for small ferromagnets, when the nonmagnetic layers efficiently relax the injected spins, but the effect is reduced when a spin accumulation build-up in the normal metal opposes the spin pumping. The damping enhancement is governed by (and, in turn, can be used to measure) the mixing conductance or spin-torque parameter of the ferromagnet--normal-metal interface. Our theoretical findings are confirmed by agreement with recent experiments in a variety of multilayer systems.

Nonlinear tube waves in permeable formations: Difference frequency generation

We extend earlier work on nonlinear tube wave propagation in permeable formations to study, analytically and numerically, the generation and propagation of a difference frequency, Delta omega = omega_1 - omega_2, due to an initial pulse consisting of carrier frequencies omega_1 and omega_2. Tube waves in permeable formations have very significant linear dispersion/attenuation, which is specifically addressed here. We find that the difference frequency is predicted to be rather easily measurable with existing techniques and could yield useful information about formation nonlinear properties.

Can one hear the shape of a saturation patch?

The theory of the acoustics of patchy-saturation in porous media is used to analyze experimental data on wave velocity and attenuation in partially water saturated limestones. It is demonstrated that the theory can be used to deduce the value of V/A, the ratio of the volume to area of the water patch, and l_f, the Poisson size of the water patch. One can ``hear'' the shape of a patch if the properties of the rock and the measurement frequencies are such as to satisfy the specific requirements for the validity of the theory.
