Diffraction control in PT-symmetric photonic lattices: from beam rectification to dynamic localization

We address the propagation of light beams in longitudinally modulated PT-symmetric lattices, built as arrays of couplers with periodically varying separation between their channels, and show a number of possibilities for efficient diffraction control available in such non-conservative structures. The dynamics of light in such lattices crucially depends on the ratio of the switching length for the straight segments of each coupler and the longitudinal lattice period. Depending on the longitudinal period, one can achieve either beam rectification, when the input light propagates at a fixed angle across the structure without diffractive broadening, or dynamic localization, when the initial intensity distribution is periodically restored after each longitudinal period. Importantly, the transition between these two different propagation regimes can be achieved by tuning only gain and losses acting in the system, provided that the PT-symmetry remains unbroken. The impact of Kerr nonlinearity is also discussed.

Suppression and restoration of disorder-induced light localization mediated by PT-symmetry breaking

We uncover that the breaking point of the PT-symmetry in optical waveguide arrays has a dramatic impact on light localization induced by the off-diagonal disorder. Specifically, when the gain/loss control parameter approaches a critical value at which PT-symmetry breaking occurs, a fast growth of the coupling between neighboring waveguides causes diffraction to dominate to an extent that light localization is strongly suppressed and statistically averaged width of the output pattern substantially increases. Beyond the symmetry-breaking point localization is gradually restored, although in this regime the power of localized modes grows upon propagation. The strength of localization monotonically increases with disorder at both, broken and unbroken PT-symmetry.

Topological states in partially-PT-symmetric azimuthal potentials

We introduce partially-parity-time-symmetric (pPT-symmetric) azimuthal potentials composed from individual PT-symmetric cells located on a ring, where two azimuthal directions are nonequivalent in a sense that in such potentials excitations carrying topological dislo-cations exhibit different dynamics for different directions of energy circulation in the initial field distribution. Such non-conservative ratchet-like structures support rich families of stable vortex solitons in cubic nonlinear media, whose properties depend on the sign of the topological charge due to the nonequivalence of azimuthal directions. In contrast, oppositely charged vortex solitons remain equivalent in similar fully PT-symmetric potentials. The vortex solitons in the pPT- and PT-symmetric potentials are shown to feature qualitatively different internal current distributions, which are described by different discrete rotation symmetries of the intensity profiles.

Dark solitons in dual-core waveguides with dispersive coupling

We report on new types of two-component one-dimensional dark solitons (DSs) in a model of a dual-core waveguide with normal group-velocity dispersion and Kerr nonlinearity in both cores, the coupling between which is dispersive too. In the presence of the dispersive coupling, quiescent DSs supported by the zero-frequency background are always gray, being stable with the out-of-phase background, i.e., for opposite signs of the fields in the cores. On the contrary, the background with a nonzero frequency supports quiescent black solitons which may be stable for both out- and in-phase backgrounds, if the dispersive coupling is sufficiently strong. Only DSs supported by the out-of-phase background admit an extension to the case of nonzero phase mismatch between the cores.

Efficient mode conversion in guiding structures with longitudinal modulation of nonlinearity

We describe power-dependent dynamics of conversion of the guided modes of various guiding structures due to nearly resonant longitudinal modulation of the nonlinear coefficient of the medium. It is shown that the control of the energy exchange integrals, as well as of the input weights of the interacting modes is especially crucial for efficient mode conversion in the setting considered here. Complex dynamics of conversion incorporates various scenarios, including non-harmonic oscillations of the energy weights, which mimics Jacoby elliptical functions.

Dynamic versus Anderson wavepacket localization

We address the interplay between two fundamentally different wavepacket localization mechanisms, namely resonant dynamic localization due to collapse of quasi-energy bands in periodic media and disorder-induced Anderson localization. Specifically, we consider light propagation in periodically curved waveguide arrays on-resonance and off-resonance, and show that inclusion of disorder leads to a gradual transition from dynamic localization to Anderson localization, which eventually is found to strongly dominate. While in the absence of disorder, the degree of localization depends critically on the bending amplitude of the waveguide array, when the Anderson regime takes over the impact of resonant effects becomes negligible.

Self-deflecting plasmonic lattice solitons and sur-face modes in chirped plasmonic arrays

We show that chirped metal-dielectric waveguide arrays with focusing cubic nonlinearity can support plasmonic lattice solitons that undergo self-deflection in the transverse plane. Such lattice solitons are deeply-subwavelength self-sustained excitations, although they cover several periods of the array. Upon propagation, the excitations accelerate in the transverse plane and follow trajectories curved in the direction in which the separation between neighboring metallic layers decreases, a phenomenon that yields considerable deflection angles. The deflection angle can be controlled by varying the array chirp. We also reveal the existence of surface modes at the boundary of truncated plasmonic chirped arraythat form even in the absence of nonlinearity.

Stabilization of spatiotemporal solitons in Kerr media by dispersive coupling

We introduce a mechanism to stabilize spatiotemporal solitons in Kerr nonlinear media, based on the dispersion of linear coupling between the field components forming the soliton states. Specifically, we consider solitons in a two-core guiding structure with inter-core coupling dispersion (CD). We show that CD profoundly affects properties of the solitons, causing the complete stabilization of the otherwise highly unstable spatiotemporal solitons in Kerr media with focusing nonlinearity. We also find that the presence of CD stimulates the formation of bound states, which however are unstable.

Bose-Einstein condensates with localized spin-orbit coupling: soliton complexes and spinor dynamics

Spin-orbit (SO) coupling can be introduced in a Bose--Einstein condensate (BEC) as a gauge potential acting only in a localized spatial domain. Effect of such a SO "defect" can be understood by transforming the system to the integrable vector model. The properties of the SO-BEC change drastically if the SO defect is accompanied by the Zeeman splitting. In such a non-integrable system, the SO defect qualitatively changes the character of soliton interactions and allows for formation of stable nearly scalar soliton complexes with almost all atoms concentrated in only one dark state. These solitons exist only if the number of particles exceeds a threshold value. We also report on the possibility of transmission and reflection of a soliton upon its scattering on the SO defect. Scattering strongly affects the pseudo-spin polarization and can induce pseudo-spin precession. The scattering can also result in almost complete atomic transfer between the dark states.

Resonant mode conversion in the waveguides with an unbroken and broken PT-symmetry

We study resonant mode conversion in the PT-symmetric multimode waveguides, where symmetry breaking manifests itself in sequential destabilization (appearance of the complex eigenvalues) of the pairs of adjacent guided modes. We show that the efficient mode conversion is possible even in the presence of the resonant longitudinal modulation of the complex refractive index. The distinguishing feature of the resonant mode conversion in the PT-symmetric structure is a drastic growth of the width of the resonance curve when the gain/losses coefficient approaches a critical value, at which symmetry breaking occurs. We found that in the system with broken symmetry the resonant coupling between exponentially growing mode with stable higher-order one effectively stabilizes dynamically coupled pair of modes and remarkably diminishes the average rate of the total power growth.

Unbreakable PT-symmetry of solitons supported by inhomogeneous defocusing nonlinearity

We consider bright solitons supported by a symmetric inhomogeneous defocusing nonlinearity growing rapidly enough toward the periphery of the medium, combined with an antisymmetric gain-loss profile. Despite the absence of any symmetric modulation of the linear refractive index, which is usually required to establish a PT-symmetry in the form of a purely real spectrum of modes, we show that the PT-symmetry is never broken in the present system, and that the system always supports stable bright solitons, fundamental and multi-pole ones. Such phenomenon is connected to non-linearizability of the underlying evolution equation. The increase of the gain-losses strength results, in lieu of the PT-symmetry breaking, in merger of pairs of different soliton branches, such as fundamental and dipole, or tripole and quadrupole ones. The fundamental and dipole solitons remain stable for all values of the gain-loss coefficient.

PT-symmetry in optics beyond the paraxial approximation

The concept of the PT-symmetry, originating from the quantum field theory, has been intensively investigated in optics, stimulated by the similarity between the Schrödinger equation and the paraxial wave equation that governs the propagation of light in a guiding structure. We go beyond the bounds of the paraxial approximation and demonstrate, using the solution of the Maxwell's equations for light beams propagating in deeply subwavelength waveguides and periodic lattices with "balanced" gain and loss, that the PT symmetry may stay unbroken in this setting. Moreover, the PT-symmetry in subwavelength optical structures may be restored after being initially broken upon the increase of gain and loss. Critical gain/loss levels, at which the breakup and subsequent restoration of the PT symmetry occur, strongly depend on the scale of the structure.

Resonant Bloch-wave beatings

We introduce Bloch-wave beatings in arrays of multimode periodically bent waveguides with a transverse refractive index gradient. The new phenomenon manifests itself in the periodic drastic increase of the amplitude of the Bloch oscillations that accompanies resonant conversion of modes guided by the individual waveguides. The Bloch-wave beatings are found to be most pronounced when the length of the resonant mode conversion substantially exceeds the longitudinal period of the Bloch oscillations. The beating frequency decreases when the amplitude of waveguide bending decreases, while the beating amplitude is restricted by the amplitude of the Bloch oscillations that emerge from the second allowed band of the Floquet-Bloch lattice spectrum.

Three-dimensional hybrid vortex solitons

We show, by means of numerical and analytical methods, that media with a repulsive nonlinearity which grows from the center to the periphery support a remarkable variety of previously unknown complex stationary and dynamical three-dimensional solitary-wave states. Peanut-shaped modulation profiles give rise to vertically symmetric and antisymmetric vortex states, and novel stationary hybrid states, built of top and bottom vortices with opposite topological charges, as well as robust dynamical hybrids, which feature stable precession of a vortex on top of a zero-vorticity base. The analysis reveals stability regions for symmetric, antisymmetric, and hybrid states. In addition, bead-shaped modulation profiles give rise to the first example of exact analytical solutions for stable three-dimensional vortex solitons. The predicted states may be realized in media with a controllable cubic nonlinearity, such as Bose-Einstein condensates.

Large transverse shifts appearing upon passage of vortices through oblique dark solitons

We show that when a single vortex convected by a flowing background collides with an oblique dark soliton in defocusing Kerr-type medium, it passes through the oblique soliton, but this process is accompanied by a considerable vertical shift of the vortex that grows with decrease of the inclination angle of the dark soliton with respect to the direction of the flow and decreases with increase of the flow (or collision) velocity. In the parameter range where the interaction with a vortex does not lead to drastic deformations of the shape of the oblique dark soliton, this shift can be estimated analytically under the assumption that vortex soliton moves along the "stream lines" that exhibit vertical shift in the vicinity of oblique dark soliton. Similar effect was observed upon collision of dark solitons with moving vortex dipoles or rotating pairs of vortices with equal topological charges.

Observation of asymmetric solitons in waveguide arrays with refractive index gradient

We study light propagation in waveguide arrays made in Kerr nonlinear media with a transverse refractive index gradient, and we find that the presence of the refractive index gradient leads to the appearance of a number of new soliton families. The effective coupling between the solitons and the localized linear eigenmodes of the lattice induces a drastic asymmetry in the soliton shapes and the appearance of long tails at the soliton wings. Such unusual solitons are found to be completely stable under propagation, and we report their experimental observation in fs-laser written waveguide arrays with focusing Kerr nonlinearity.

Mode conversion in nonlinear waveguides stimulated by the longitudinal bi-harmonic refractive index modulation

We study specific features of resonant mode conversion in nonlinear waveguides stimulated by the bi-harmonic longitudinal modulation of its parameters, which includes changes of the waveguide depth as well as its bending (in the one-dimensional case) or spiraling (in the two-dimensional case). We demonstrate the possibility of simultaneous excitation of higher-order modes of different parities and topologies with controllable energy weights. The output mode composition is highly sensitive to the variation in the input power and detuning from the resonant modulation frequency.

Enhancement and inhibition of light tunneling mediated by resonant mode conversion

We show that the rate at which light tunnels between neighboring multimode waveguides can be drastically increased or reduced by the presence of small longitudinal periodic modulations of the waveguide properties that stimulate resonant conversion between eigenmodes of each waveguide. Such a conversion, available only in multimode guiding structures, leads to periodic power transfer into higher-order modes, whose tails may considerably overlap with neighboring waveguides. As a result, the effective coupling constant for neighboring waveguides may change by several orders of magnitude upon small variations in the longitudinal modulation parameters.
