Relaxation time and critical slowing down of a spin-torque oscillator

The relaxation phenomena of spin-torque oscillators consisting of nanostructured ferromagnets are interesting research targets in magnetism. A theoretical study on the relaxation time of a spin-torque oscillator from one self-oscillation state to another is investigated. By solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation both analytically and numerically, it is shown that the oscillator relaxes to the self-oscillation state exponentially within a few nanoseconds, except when magnetization is close to a critical point. The relaxation rate, which is an inverse of relaxation time, is proportional to the current. On the other hand, a critical slowing down appears near the critical point, where relaxation is inversely proportional to time, and the relaxation time becomes on the order of hundreds of nanoseconds. These conclusions are primarily obtained for a spin-torque oscillator consisting of a perpendicularly magnetized free layer and an in-plane magnetized pinned layer, and are further developed for application to arbitrary types of spin-torque oscillators.

Full counting statistics of information content and particle number

We consider a bipartite quantum conductor and discuss the joint probability distribution of particle number in a subsystem and the self-information associated with the reduced density matrix of the subsystem. By extending the multi-contour Keldysh Green function technique, we calculate the Rényi entropy of a positive integer order $M$ subjected to the particle number constraint, from which we derive the joint probability distribution. For energy-independent transmission, we derive the time dependence of the accessible entanglement entropy, or the conditional entropy. We analyze the joint probability distribution for energy-dependent transmission probability at the steady state under the coherent resonant tunneling and the incoherent sequential tunneling conditions. We also discuss the probability distribution of the efficiency, which measures the information content transfered by a single electron.

Analysis of the conditional average and conditional variance of dissipated energy in the driven spin-boson model

We investigate the conditional average and the conditional variance of dissipated energy considering, as a prototypical example, a driven spin-boson system. We follow a measurement protocol in which the spin is prepared in a certain initial state before undergoing a periodic driving. Subsequently, the spin is projected onto a post-selected final state. We compare the conditional average of dissipated energy to the lower bound which directly follows from the well known fluctuation relations. We further report that a special selection of the initial (pre-selected) and final (post-selected) spin states leads to an enhanced energy emission with simultaneous noise suppression at driving times of order of the relaxation time.

Heat and charge current fluctuations and the time dependent coefficient of performance for a nanoscale refrigerator

We theoretically investigate the coefficient of performance (COP) of a mesoscopic thermoelectric refrigerator realized by using a tunnel junction. We analyze the influence of particle and heat current fluctuations on the COP out of the equilibrium regime. We calculate the average COP by using full counting statistics and find that it depends on the measurement time $τ$. The deviation from the macroscopic COP value can be expressed with the Skellam distribution at all times. This result enables us to improve the Gaussian approximation valid within the linear response regime, which cannot predict the average COP in the limit of $τ\to 0$. We illustrate the time dependence of the average COP and find that in the short-time regime, the average COP possesses a minimum. In order to confirm the physical consistency far from equilibrium, we propose checking the correlation coefficient between the particle and the heat currents in addition to the positivity of the entropy production rate.

Spin-dependent transport through a chiral molecule in the presence of spin-orbit interaction and non-unitary effects

Recent experiments have demonstrated the efficacy of chiral helically shaped molecules in polarizing the scattered electron spin, an effect termed as chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS). Here we solve a simple tight-binding model for electron transport through a single helical molecule, with spin-orbit interactions on the bonds along the helix. Quantum interference is introduced via additional electron hopping between neighboring sites in the direction of the helix axis. When the helix is connected to two one-dimensional single-mode leads, time-reversal symmetry prevents spin polarization of the outgoing electrons. One possible way to retrieve such a polarization is to allow leakage of electrons from the helix to the environment, via additional outgoing leads. Technically, the leakage generates complex site self-energies, which break unitarity. As a result, the electron waves in the helix become evanescent, with different decay lengths for different spin polarizations, yielding a net spin polarization of the outgoing electrons, which increases with the length of the helix (as observed experimentally). A maximal polarization can be measured at a finite angle away from the helix axis.

Full counting statistics of information content in the presence of Coulomb interaction

We calculate the Rényi entropy of a positive integer order $M$ for a reduced density matrix of a single-level quantum dot connected to left and right leads. We exploit a $2 \times 2$ modified Keldysh Green function matrix obtained by the discrete Fourier transform of a $2 M \times 2M$ multi-contour Keldysh Green function matrix. A moment generating function of self-information is deduced from the analytic continuation of $M$ to the complex plane. We calculate the probability distribution of self-information and find that, within the Hartree approximation, the on-site Coulomb interaction affects rare events and modifies a bound of the probability distribution. A simple equality, from which an upper bound of the average, i.e., the entanglement entropy, would be inferred, is presented. For noninteracting electrons, the entanglement entropy is expressed with current cumulants of the full-counting statistics of electron transport.

Stable oscillation in spin torque oscillator excited by a small in-plane magnetic field

Theoretical conditions to excite self-oscillation in a spin torque oscillator consisting of a perpendicularly magnetized free layer and an in-plane magnetized pinned layer are investigated by analytically solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. The analytical relation between the current and oscillation frequency is derived. It is found that a large amplitude oscillation can be excited by applying a small field pointing to the direction anti-parallel to the magnetization of the pinned layer. The validity of the analytical results is confirmed by comparing with numerical simulation, showing good agreement especially in a low current region.

Fluctuation Theorem for a Small Engine and Magnetization Switching by Spin Torque

We consider a reversal of the magnetic moment of a nano-magnet by the fluctuating spin-torque induced by a non-equilibrium current of electron spins. This is an example of the problem of the escape of a particle from a metastable state subjected to a fluctuating non-conservative force. The spin-torque is the non-conservative force and its fluctuations are beyond the description of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. We estimate the joint probability distribution of work done by the spin torque and the Joule heat generated by the current, which satisfies the fluctuation theorem for a small engine. We predict a threshold voltage above which the spin-torque shot noise induces probabilistic switching events and below which such events are blocked. We adopt the theory of the full-counting statistics under the adiabatic pumping of spin angular momentum. This enables us to account for the backaction effect, which is crucial to maintain consistency with the fluctuation theorem.

Distribution of energy dissipated by a driven two-level system

In the context of fluctuation relations, we study the distribution of energy dissipated by a driven two-level system. Incorporating an energy counting field into the well known spin-boson model enables us to calculate the distribution function of the amount of energy exchanged between the system and the bath. We also derive the conditional distribution functions of the energy exchanged with the bath for particular initial and/or final states of the two-level system. We confirm the symmetry of the conditional distribution function expected from the theory of fluctuation relations. We also find that the conditional distribution functions acquire considerable quantum corrections at times shorter or of the order of the dephasing time. Our findings can be tested using solid-state qubits.

Thermally activated switching rate of a nanomagnet in the presence of spin torque

The current dependence of the spin torque switching rate in a thermally activated region of an in-plane magnetized system was studied. The logarithm of the switching rate depended nonlinearly on current in the high-current region, I_{c} < I < I_{c}^{*}, where I_{c} and I_{c}^{*} are critical currents distinguishing the stability of the magnetization. We also found that the attempt frequency had a minimum around I_{c}, and that the attempt frequency at I_{c} was three orders of magnitude smaller than that at zero current, contrary to the assumption in previous analyses of experiments that it remains constant.

Spin torque switching of an in-plane magnetized system in a thermally activated region

The current dependence of the exponent of the spin torque switching rate of an in-plane magnetized system was investigated by solving the Fokker-Planck equation with low temperature and small damping and current approximations. We derived the analytical expressions of the critical currents, I_{c} and I_{c}^{*}. At I_{c}, the initial state parallel to the easy axis becomes unstable, while at I_{c}^{*} (\simeq 1.27 I_{c}) the switching occurs without the thermal fluctuation. The current dependence of the exponent of the switching rate is well described by (1-I/I_{c}^{*})^{b}, where the value of the exponent b is approximately unity for I < I_{c}, while b rapidly increases up to 2.2 with increasing current for I_{c} < I < I_{c}^{*}. The linear dependence for I < I_{c} agrees with the other works, while the nonlinear dependence for I_{c} < I < I_{c}^{*} was newly found by the present work. The nonlinear dependence is important for analysis of the experimental results, because most experiments are performed in the current region of I_{c} < I < I_{c}^{*}.

Numerical Study on Spin Torque Switching in Thermally Activated Region

We studied the spin torque switching of the single free layer in the thermally activated region by numerically solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. We found that the temperature dependence of the switching time of the in-plane magnetized system is nonlinear, which means $b \neq 1$. Here, $b$ is the exponent of the current term in the switching rate formula and has been widely assumed to be unity. This result enables us to evaluate the thermal stability of spintronics devices.

Fluctuation Theorem and Microreversibility in a Quantum Coherent Conductor

Mesoscopic systems provide us a unique experimental stage to address non-equilibrium quantum statistical physics. By using a simple tunneling model, we describe the electron exchange process via a quantum coherent conductor between two reservoirs, which yields the fluctuation theorem (FT) in mesoscopic transport. We experimentally show that such a treatment is semi-quantitatively validated in the current and noise measurement in an Aharonov-Bohm ring. The experimental proof of the microreversibility assumed in the derivation of FT is presented.

Non-equilibrium Fluctuation Relations in a Quantum Coherent Conductor

We experimentally demonstrate the validity of non-equilibrium fluctuation relations by using a quantum coherent conductor. In equilibrium the fluctuation-dissipation relation leads to the correlation between current and current noise at the conductor, namely, Johnson-Nyqusit relation. When the conductor is voltage-biased so that the non-linear regime is entered, the fluctuation theorem has predicted similar non-equilibrium fluctuation relations, which hold true even when the Onsager-Casmir relations are broken in magnetic fields. Our experiments qualitatively validate the predictions as the first evidence of this theorem in the non-equilibrium quantum regime. In the appendix, we give simple deduction of the higher order correlations between the current and the current noise based on the fluctuation theorem.

Nonequilibrium Extension of Onsager Relations for Thermoelectric Effects of Mesoscopic Conductors

We discuss a consequence of time reversal symmetry on thermoelectric effect in nonequilibrium coherent quantum transport. Starting with a quantum version of the fluctuation theorem, we show that there exist universal relations between the Peltier coefficient and the Seebeck coefficient of general mesoscopic systems with Coulomb interaction in a nonlinear regime. This extended Kelvin-Onsager relation may be used to obtain useful information on heat current, e.g. the nonlinear Peltier coefficient, which is difficult to be measured in a usual setup of experiments, only from electric current measurement.

Fluctuation Theorem in a Quantum-Dot Aharonov-Bohm Interferometer

In the present study, we investigate the full counting statistics in a two-terminal Aharonov-Bohm interferometer embedded with an interacting quantum dot. We introduce a novel saddle-point solution for a cumulant-generating function, which satisfies the fluctuation theorem and accounts for the interaction in the mean-field level approximation. Nonlinear transport coefficients satisfy universal relations imposed by microscopic reversibility, though the scattering matrix itself is not reversible. The skewness can be finite even in equilibrium, owing to the interaction and is proportional to the asymmetric component of nonlinear conductance.

Symmetry in Full Counting Statistics, Fluctuation Theorem, and Relations among Nonlinear Transport Coefficients in the Presence of a Magnetic Field

We study full counting statistics of coherent electron transport through multi-terminal interacting quantum-dots under a finite magnetic field. Microscopic reversibility leads to the symmetry of the cumulant generating function, which generalizes the fluctuation theorem in the context of quantum transport. Using this symmetry, we derive the Onsager-Casimir relation in the linear transport regime and universal relations among nonlinear transport coefficients.

Full counting statistics for transport through a molecular quantum dot magnet

Full counting statistics (FCS) for the transport through a molecular quantum dot magnet is studied theoretically in the incoherent tunneling regime. We consider a model describing a single-level quantum dot, magnetically coupled to an additional local spin, the latter representing the total molecular spin s. We also assume that the system is in the strong Coulomb blockade regime, i.e., double occupancy on the dot is forbidden. The master equation approach to FCS introduced in Ref. [12] is applied to derive a generating function yielding the FCS of charge and current. In the master equation approach, Clebsch-Gordan coefficients appear in the transition probabilities, whereas the derivation of generating function reduces to solving the eigenvalue problem of a modified master equation with counting fields. To be more specific, one needs only the eigenstate which collapses smoothly to the zero-eigenvalue stationary state in the limit of vanishing counting fields. We discovered that in our problem with arbitrary spin s, some quartic relations among Clebsch-Gordan coefficients allow us to identify the desired eigenspace without solving the whole problem. Thus we find analytically the FCS generating function in the following two cases: i) both spin sectors lying in the bias window, ii) only one of such spin sectors lying in the bias window. Based on the obtained analytic expressions, we also developed a numerical analysis in order to perform a similar contour-plot of the joint charge-current distribution function, which have recently been introduced in Ref. [13], here in the case of molecular quantum dot magnet problem.
