The zipper condition for $4$-tensors in two-dimensional topological order and the higher relative commutants of a subfactor arising from a commuting square

Researchers in condensed matter physics recently study two-dimensional topological order in terms of tensor networks involving certain 3- and 4-tensors. Their 3-tensors satisfying the "zipper condition" play an important role there and such 3-tensors can be made into certain 2-tensors by combining two wires into one. We identify their 4-tensors with bi-unitary connections in Jones' subfactor theory in operator algebras with precise normalization constants. Then we prove that their 2-tensors satisfying the zipper condition are the same as flat fields of strings in subfactor theory which correspond to elements in the higher relative commutants of the subfactor arising from the bi-unitary connection. This is what we expect, since the zipper condition is a kind of pentagon relations, but we clarify what conditions are exactly needed for this -- we do not need the flatness or the finite depth condition for the bi-unitary connection. We actually generalize their 4-tensors so that the four index sets of the 4-tensors can be all different and work on a "half-version" of the zipper condition.

Flatness of $α$-induced bi-unitary connections and commutativity of Frobenius algebras

The tensor functor called $α$-induction produces a new unitary fusion category from a Frobenius algebra, or a $Q$-system, in a braided unitary fusion category. A bi-unitary connection, which is a finite family of complex number subject to some axioms, realizes an object in any unitary fusion category. It also gives a characterization of a finite-dimensional nondegenerate commuting square in subfactor theory of Jones and realizes a certain $4$-tensor appearing in recent studies of $2$-dimensional topological order. We study $α$-induction for bi-unitary connections, and show that flatness of the resulting $α$-induced bi-unitary connections implies commutativity of the original Frobenius algebra. This gives a converse of our previous result and answers a question raised by R. Longo. We furthermore give finer correspondence between the flat parts of the $α$-induced bi-unitary connections and the commutative Frobenius subalgebras studied by Böckenhauer-Evans.

Modular invariance as completeness

We review the physical meaning of modular invariance for unitary conformal quantum field theories in d=2. For QFT models, while T invariance is necessary for locality, S invariance is not mandatory. S invariance is a form of completeness of the theory that has a precise meaning as Haag duality for arbitrary multi-interval regions. We present a mathematical proof as well as derive this result from a physical standpoint using Renyi entropies and the replica trick. For rational CFT's, the failure of modular invariance or Haag duality can be measured by an index, related to the quantum dimensions of the model. We show how to compute this index from the modular transformation matrices. The index also appears in a limit of the Renyi mutual informations. Cases of infinite index are briefly discussed. Part of the argument can be extended to higher dimensions, where the lack of completeness can also be diagnosed using the CFT data through the thermal partition function and measured by an index.

$α$-induction for bi-unitary connections

The tensor functor called $α$-induction arises from a Frobenius algebra object, or a Q-system, in a braided unitary fusion category. In the operator algebraic language, it gives extensions of endomorphism of $N$ to $M$ arising from a subfactor $N\subset M$ of finite index and finite depth giving a braided fusion category of endomorpshisms of $N$. It is also understood in terms of Ocneanu's graphical calculus. We study this $α$-induction for bi-unitary connections, which give a characterization of finite-dimensional nondegenerate commuting squares and gives certain 4-tensors appearing in recent studies of 2-dimensional topological order. We show that the resulting $α$-induced bi-unitary connections are flat if we have a commutative Frobenius algebra, or a local Q-system. Examples related to chiral conformal field theory and the Dynkin diagrams are presented.

A characterization of a finite-dimensional commuting square producing a subfactor of finite depth

We give a characterization of a finite-dimensional commuting square of C*-algebras with a normalized trace that produces a hyperfinite type II_1 subfactor of finite index and finite depth in terms of Morita equivalent unitary fusion categories. This type of commuting squares were studied by N. Sato, and we show that a slight generalization of his construction covers the fully general case of such commuting squares. We also give a characterization of such a commuting square that produces a given hyperfinite type II_1 subfactor of finite index and finite depth. These results also give a characterization of certain 4-tensors that appear in recent studies of matrix product operators in 2-dimensional topological order.

Projector Matrix Product Operators, Anyons and Higher Relative Commutants of Subfactors

A bi-unitary connection in subfactor theory of Jones producing a subfactor of finite depth gives a 4-tensor appearing in a recent work of Bultinck-Mariena-Williamson-Sahinoglu-Haegemana-Verstraete on 2-dimensional topological order and anyons. In their work, they have a special projection called a projector matrix product operator. We prove that the range of this projection of length k is naturally identified with the k-th higher relative commutant of the subfactor arising from the bi-unitary connection. This gives a further connection between 2-dimensional topological order and subfactor theory.

Two-dimensional topological order and operator algebras

We review recent interactions between mathematical theory of two-dimensional topological order and operator algebras, particularly the Jones theory of subfactors. The role of representation theory in terms of tensor categories is emphasized. Connections to 2-dimensional conformal field theory are also presented. In particular, we discuss anyon condensation, gapped domain walls and matrix product operators in terms of operator algebras.

A remark on matrix product operator algebras, anyons and subfactors

We show that the mathematical structures in a recent work of Bultinck-Mariena-Williamson-Sahinoglu-Haegemana-Verstraete are the same as those of flat symmetric bi-unitary connections and the tube algebra in subfactor theory. More specifically, a system of flat symmetric bi-unitary connections arising from a subfactor with finite index and finite depth satisfies all their requirements for tensors and the tube algebra for such a subfactor and the anyon algebra for such tensors are isomorphic up to the normalization constants. Furthermore, the matrix product operator algebras arising from tensors corresponding to possibly non-flat symmetric bi-unitary connections are isomorphic to those arising from flat symmetric bi-unitary connections for subfactors.

From vertex operator algebras to conformal nets and back

We consider unitary simple vertex operator algebras whose vertex operators satisfy certain energy bounds and a strong form of locality and call them strongly local. We present a general procedure which associates to every strongly local vertex operator algebra V a conformal net A_V acting on the Hilbert space completion of V and prove that the isomorphism class of A_V does not depend on the choice of the scalar product on V. We show that the class of strongly local vertex operator algebras is closed under taking tensor products and unitary subalgebras and that, for every strongly local vertex operator algebra V, the map W\mapsto A_W gives a one-to-one correspondence between the unitary subalgebras W of V and the covariant subnets of A_V. Many known examples of vertex operator algebras such as the unitary Virasoro vertex operator algebras, the unitary affine Lie algebras vertex operator algebras, the known c=1 unitary vertex operator algebras, the moonshine vertex operator algebra, together with their coset and orbifold subalgebras, turn out to be strongly local. We give various applications of our results. In particular we show that the even shorter Moonshine vertex operator algebra is strongly local and that the automorphism group of the corresponding conformal net is the Baby Monster group. We prove that a construction of Fredenhagen and Jörss gives back the strongly local vertex operator algebra V from the conformal net A_V and give conditions on a conformal net A implying that A= A_V for some strongly local vertex operator algebra V.

Conformal Field Theory, Vertex Operator Algebras and Operator Algebras

We present recent progress in theory of local conformal nets which is an operator algebraic approach to study chiral conformal field theory. We emphasize representation theoretic aspects and relations to theory of vertex operator algebras which gives a different and algebraic formulation of chiral conformal field theory.

The relative Drinfeld commutant of a fusion category and $α$-induction

We establish a correspondence among simple objects of the relative commutant of a full fusion subcategory in a larger fusion category in the sense of Drinfeld, irreducible half-braidings of objects in the larger fusion category with respect to the fusion subcategory, and minimal central projections in the relative tube algebra. Based on this, we explicitly compute certain relative Drinfeld commutants of fusion categories arising from $α$-induction for braided subfactors. We present examples arising from chiral conformal field theory.

A relative tensor product of subfactors over a modular tensor category

We define and study a certain relative tensor product of subfactors over a modular tensor category. This gives a relative tensor product of two completely rational heterotic full local conformal nets with trivial superselection structures over a common chiral representation category. In particular, we have a new realization of fusion rules of modular invariants. This also gives a mathematical definition of a composition of two gapped domain walls between topological phases.

Phase boundaries in algebraic conformal QFT

We study the structure of local algebras in relativistic conformal quantum field theory with phase boundaries. Phase boundaries are instances of a more general notion of boundaries that give rise to a variety of algebraic structures. These can be formulated in a common framework originating in Algebraic QFT, with the principle of Einstein Causality playing a prominent role.We classify the phase boundary conditions by the centre of a certain universal construction, which produces a reducible representation in which all possible boundary conditions are realized. For a large class of models, the classification reproduces results obtained in a different approach by Fuchs et al. before.

Characterization of 2D rational local conformal nets and its boundary conditions: the maximal case

Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a completely rational local Möbius covariant net on $S^1$, which describes a set of chiral observables. We show that local Möbius covariant nets $\mathcal{B}_2$ on 2D Minkowski space which contains $\mathcal{A}$ as chiral left-right symmetry are in one-to-one correspondence with Morita equivalence classes of Q-systems in the unitary modular tensor category $\mathrm{DHR}(\mathcal{A})$. The Möbius covariant boundary conditions with symmetry $\mathcal{A}$ of such a net $\mathcal{B}_2$ are given by the Q-systems in the Morita equivalence class or by simple objects in the module category modulo automorphisms of the dual category. We generalize to reducible boundary conditions. To establish this result we define the notion of Morita equivalence for Q-systems (special symmetric $\ast$-Frobenius algebra objects) and non-degenerately braided subfactors. We prove a conjecture by Kong and Runkel, namely that Rehren's construction (generalized Longo-Rehren construction, $α$-induction construction) coincides with the categorical full center. This gives a new view and new results for the study of braided subfactors.

A remark on gapped domain walls between topological phases

We give a mathematical definition of a gapped domain wall between topological phases and a gapped boundary of a topological phase. We then provide answers to some recent questions studied by Lan, Wang and Wen in condensed matter physics based on works of Davydov, Müger, Nikshych and Ostrik. In particular, we identify their tunneling matrix and a coupling matrix of Rehren, and show that their conjecture does not hold.

Tensor categories and endomorphisms of von Neumann algebras (with applications to Quantum Field Theory)

Q-systems describe "extensions" of an infinite von Neumann factor $N$, i.e., finite-index unital inclusions of $N$ into another von Neumann algebra $M$. They are (special cases of) Frobenius algebras in the C* tensor category of endomorphisms of $N$. We review the relation between Q-systems, their modules and bimodules as structures in a category on one side, and homomorphisms between von Neumann algebras on the other side. We then elaborate basic operations with Q-systems (various decompositions in the general case, and the centre, the full centre, and the braided product in braided categories), and illuminate their meaning in the von Neumann algebra setting. The main applications are in local quantum field theory, where Q-systems in the subcategory of DHR endomorphisms of a local algebra encode extensions $A(O)\subset B(O)$ of local nets. These applications, notably in conformal quantum field theories with boundaries, are briefly exposed, and are discussed in more detail in two separate papers [arXiv:1405.7863, 1410.8848].
