N=2 superconformal nets

We provide an Operator Algebraic approach to N=2 chiral Conformal Field Theory and set up the Noncommutative Geometric framework. Compared to the N=1 case, the structure here is much richer. There are naturally associated nets of spectral triples and the JLO cocycles separate the Ramond sectors. We construct the N=2 superconformal nets of von Neumann algebras in general, classify them in the discrete series c<3, and we define and study an operator algebraic version of the N=2 spectral flow. We prove the coset identification for the N=2 super-Virasoro nets with c<3, a key result whose equivalent in the vertex algebra context has seemingly not been completely proved so far. Finally, the chiral ring is discussed in terms of net representations.

Normal states of type III factors

Let M be a factor of type III with separable predual and with normal states phi_1,...,phi_k, omega with omega faithful. Let A be a finite dimensional C*-subalgebra of M. Then it is shown that there is a unitary operator u in M such that phi_i Ad u =omega on A for i=1,...,k. This follows from an embedding result of a finite dimensional C*-algebra with a faithful state into M with finitely many given states. We also give similar embedding results of C*-algebras and von Neumann algebras with faithful states into M. Another similar result for a factor of type II_1 instead of type III holds.

Construction of holomorphic local conformal framed nets

We construct holomorphic local conformal framed nets extended from a tensor power of the Virasoro net with c=1/2 with a pair of binary codes (C,D) satisfying the conditions given by Lam and Yamauchi for holomorphic framed vertex operator algebras. Our result is an operator algebraic counterpart of theirs, but our proof is entirely different. We apply the alpha-induction in order to identify the representation theory of "code local conformal net" and this gives rise to the existence of the desired local conformal net.

How to add a boundary condition

Given a conformal QFT local net of von Neumann algebras B_2 on the two-dimensional Minkowski spacetime with irreducible subnet A\otimes\A, where A is a completely rational net on the left/right light-ray, we show how to consistently add a boundary to B_2: we provide a procedure to construct a Boundary CFT net B of von Neumann algebras on the half-plane x>0, associated with A, and locally isomorphic to B_2. All such locally isomorphic Boundary CFT nets arise in this way. There are only finitely many locally isomorphic Boundary CFT nets and we get them all together. In essence, we show how to directly redefine the C* representation of the restriction of B_2 to the half-plane by means of subfactors and local conformal nets of von Neumann algebras on S^1.

From Operator Algebras to Superconformal Field Theory

We make a review on the recent progress in the operator algebraic approach to (super)conformal field theory. We discuss representation theory, classification results, full and boundary conformal field theories, relations to supervertex operator algebras and Moonshine, connections to subfactor theory and noncommutative geometry.

On the Jones index values for conformal subnets

We consider the smallest values taken by the Jones index for an inclusion of local conformal nets of von Neumann algebras on S^1 and show that these values are quite more restricted than for an arbitrary inclusion of factors. Below 4, the only non-integer admissible value is 4\cos^2 π/10, which is known to be attained by a certain coset model. Then no index value is possible in the interval between 4 and 3 +\sqrt{3}. The proof of this result based on α-induction arguments. In the case of values below 4 we also give a second proof of the result. In the course of the latter proof we classify all possible unitary braiding symmetries on the A D E tensor categories, namely the ones associated with the even vertices of the A_n, D_{2n}, E_6, E_8 Dynkin diagrams.

Spectral triples and the super-Virasoro algebra

We construct infinite dimensional spectral triples associated with representations of the super-Virasoro algebra. In particular the irreducible, unitary positive energy representation of the Ramond algebra with central charge c and minimal lowest weight h=c/24 is graded and gives rise to a net of even theta-summable spectral triples with non-zero Fredholm index. The irreducible unitary positive energy representations of the Neveu-Schwarz algebra give rise to nets of even theta-summable generalised spectral triples where there is no Dirac operator but only a superderivation.

Structure and Classification of Superconformal Nets

We study the general structure of Fermi conformal nets of von Neumann algebras on the circle, consider a class of topological representations, the general representations, that we characterize as Neveu-Schwarz or Ramond representations, in particular a Jones index can be associated with each of them. We then consider a supersymmetric general representation associated with a Fermi modular net and give a formula involving the Fredholm index of the supercharge operator and the Jones index. We then consider the net associated with the super-Virasoro algebra and discuss its structure. If the central charge c belongs to the discrete series, this net is modular by the work of F. Xu and we get an example where our setting is verified by considering the Ramond irreducible representation with lowest weight c/24. We classify all the irreducible Fermi extensions of any super-Virasoro net in the discrete series, thus providing a classification of all superconformal nets with central charge less than 3/2.

Conformal Field Theory and Operator Algebras

We review recent progress in operator algebraic approach to conformal quantum field theory. Our emphasis is on use of representation theory in classification theory. This is based on a series of joint works with R. Longo.

Local conformal nets arising from framed vertex operator algebras

We apply an idea of framed vertex operator algebras to a construction of local conformal nets of (injective type III_1) factors on the circle corresponding to various lattice vertex operator algebras and their twisted orbifolds. In particular, we give a local conformal net corresponding to the moonshine vertex operator algebras of Frenkel-Lepowsky-Meurman. Its central charge is 24, it has a trivial representation theory in the sense that the vacuum sector is the only irreducible DHR sector, its vacuum character is the modular invariant J-function and its automorphism group (the gauge group) is the Monster group. We use our previous tools such as alpha-induction and complete rationality to study extensions of local conformal nets.

Noncommutative Spectral Invariants and Black Hole Entropy

We consider an intrinsic entropy associated with a local conformal net A by the coefficients in the expansion of the logarithm of the trace of the ``heat kernel'' semigroup. In analogy with Weyl theorem on the asymptotic density distribution of the Laplacian eigenvalues, passing to a quantum system with infinitely many degrees of freedom, we regard these coefficients as noncommutative geometric invariants. Under a natural modularity assumption, the leading term of the entropy (noncommutative area) is proportional to the central charge c, the first order correction (noncommutative Euler characteristic) is proportional to logμ_A, where μ_A is the global index of A, and the second spectral invariant is again proportional to c. We give a further general method to define a mean entropy by considering conformal symmetries that preserve a discretization of S^1 and we get the same value proportional to c. We then make the corresponding analysis with the proper Hamiltonian associated to an interval. We find here, in complete generality, a proper mean entropy proportional to logμ_A with a first order correction defined by means of the relative entropy associated with canonical states. By considering a class of black holes with an associated conformal quantum field theory on the horizon, and relying on arguments in the literature, we indicate a possible way to link the noncommutative area with the Bekenstein-Hawking classical area description of entropy.

Classification of operator algebraic conformal field theories in dimensions one and two

We formulate conformal field theory in the setting of algebraic quantum field theory as Haag-Kastler nets of local observable algebras with diffeomorphism covariance on the two-dimensional Minkowski space. We then obtain a decomposition of a two-dimensional theory into two chiral theories. We give the first classification result of such chiral theories with representation theoretic invariants. That is, we use the central charge as the first invariant, and if it is less than 1, we obtain a complete classification. Our classification list contains a new net which does not seem to arise from the known constructions such as the coset or orbifold constructions. We also present a classification of full two-dimensional conformal theories. These are joint works with Roberto Longo.

Classification of operator algebraic conformal field theories

We give an exposition on the current status of classification of operator algebraic conformal field theories. We explain roles of complete rationality and alpha-induction for nets of subfactors in such a classification and present the current classification result, a joint work with R. Longo, for the case with central charge less than 1, where we have a complete classification list consisting of the Virasoro nets, their simple current extensions of index 2, and four exceptionals. Two of the four exceptionals appear to be new.

Classification of Two-dimensional Local Conformal Nets with c<1 and 2-cohomology Vanishing for Tensor Categories

We classify two-dimensional local conformal nets with parity symmetry and central charge less than 1, up to isomorphism. The maximal ones are in a bijective correspondence with the pairs of A-D-E Dynkin diagrams with the difference of their Coxeter numbers equal to 1. In our previous classification of one-dimensional local conformal nets, Dynkin diagrams D_{2n+1} and E_7 do not appear, but now they do appear in this classification of two-dimensional local conformal nets. Such nets are also characterized as two-dimensional local conformal nets with mu-index equal to 1 and central charge less than 1. Our main tool, in addition to our previous classification results for one-dimensional nets, is 2-cohomology vanishing for certain tensor categories related to the Virasoro tensor categories with central charge less than 1.

Classification of Local Conformal Nets. Case c < 1

We completely classify diffeomorphism covariant local nets of von Neumann algebras on the circle with central charge c less than 1. The irreducible ones are in bijective correspondence with the pairs of A-D_{2n}-E_{6,8} Dynkin diagrams such that the difference of their Coxeter numbers is equal to 1. We first identify the nets generated by irreducible representations of the Virasoro algebra for c<1 with certain coset nets. Then, by using the classification of modular invariants for the minimal models by Cappelli-Itzykson-Zuber and the method of alpha-induction in subfactor theory, we classify all local irreducible extensions of the Virasoro nets for c<1 and infer our main classification result. As an application, we identify in our classification list certain concrete coset nets studied in the literature.

(2+1)-dimensional topological quantum field theory from subfactors and Dehn surgery formula for 3-manifold invariants

In this paper, we establish the general theory of (2+1)-dimensional topological quantum field theory (in short, TQFT) with a Verlinde basis. It is a consequence that we have a Dehn surgery formula for 3-manifold invariants for this kind of TQFT's. We will show that Turaev-Viro-Ocneanu unitary TQFT's obtained from subfactors satisfy the axioms of TQFT's with Verlinde bases. Hence, in a Turaev-Viro-Ocneanu TQFT, we have a Dehn surgery formula for 3-manifolds. It turns out that this Dehn surgery formula is nothing but the formula of the Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant constructed from a tube system, which is a modular category corresponding to the quantum double construction of a C^*-tensor category. In the forthcoming paper, we will exbit computations of Turaev-Viro-Ocneanu invariants for several ``basic 3-manifolds ''. In Appendix, we discuss the relationship between the system of M_{infinity}-M_{infinity} bimodules arising from the asymptotic inclusion M V M^{op} subset M_{infinity} constructed from N subset M and the tube system obtained from a subfactor N subset M.

Generalized Longo-Rehren subfactors and alpha-induction

We study the recent construction of subfactors by Rehren which generalizes the Longo-Rehren subfactors. We prove that if we apply this construction to a non-degenerately braided subfactor N subset M and alpha-induction, then the resulting subfactor is dual to the Longo-Rehren subfactor M tensor M^opp subset R arising from the entire system of irreducible endomorphisms of M resulting from alpha-induction. As a corollary, we solve a problem on existence of braiding raised by Rehren negatively. Furthermore, we generalize our previous study with Longo and Muger on multi-interval subfactors arising from a completely rational conformal net of factors on S^1 to a net of subfactors and show that the (generalized) Longo-Rehren subfactors and alpha-induction naturally appear in this context.
