Pressure induced switching in ferroelectrics: on the junction between physics and electrochemistry

Pressure-induced polarization switching in ferroelectric thin films has emerged as a powerful method for domain patterning, allowing to create predefined domain patterns on free surfaces and under thin conductive top electrodes. However, the mechanisms for pressure induced polarization switching in ferroelectrics remain highly controversial, with flexoelectricity, polarization rotation and suppression, and bulk and surface electrochemical processes all being potentially relevant. Here we classify possible pressure induced switching mechanisms, perform elementary estimates, and study in depth using phase-field modelling. We show that magnitudes of these effects are remarkably close, and give rise to complex switching diagrams as a function of pressure and film thickness with non-trivial topology or switchable and non-switchable regions.

Phase-field modeling of chemical control of polarization stability and switching dynamics in ferroelectric thin film

Phase-field simulation (PFS) have revolutionized the understanding of domain structure and switching behavior in ferroelectric thin films and ceramics. Generally, PFS is based on solution of a (set) of Ginzburg-Landau equations for a defined order parameter field(s) under physical boundary conditions (BCs) of fixed potential or charge. While well-matched to the interfaces in bulk materials and devices, these BCs are generally not applicable to free ferroelectric surfaces. Here, we developed a self-consistent phase-field model with boundary conditions based on electrochemical equilibria. We chose Pb(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3 ultrathin film consisting of (001) oriented single tetragonal domain (Pz) as a model system, and systematically studied the effects of oxygen partial pressure, temperature and surface ion on the ferroelectric state, and compared it with the case of complete screening. We have further explored the polarization switching induced by the oxygen partial pressure and observed pronounced size effect induced by chemical screening. Our work thus helps to understand the emergent phenomena in ferroelectric thin films brought about by the electrochemical ionic surface compensations.

Flexocoupling impact on the size effects of piezo- response and conductance in mixed-type ferroelectrics-semiconductors under applied pressure

Flexocoupling impact on the size effects of the spontaneous polarization, effective piezo-response, elastic strain and compliance, carrier concentration and piezo-conductance have been calculated in thin films of ferroelectric semiconductors with mixed-type conductivity under applied pressure. Analysis of the self-consistent calculation results revealed that the thickness dependences of aforementioned physical quantities, calculated at zero and nonzero flexoelectric couplings, are very similar under zero applied pressure, but become strongly different under the application of external pressure pext. At that the differences become noticeably stronger for the film surface under compression than under tension. The impact of the Vegard mechanism on the size effects is weaker in comparison with flexocoupling except for the thickness dependence of the piezo-conductance. Without flexoelectric coupling the studied physical quantities manifest conventional peculiarities that are characteristic of the size-induced phase transitions. Namely, when the film thickness h approaches the critical thickness hcr the transition to paraelectric phase occurs. The combined effect of flexoelectric coupling and external pressure induces polarizations at the film surfaces, which cause the electric built-in field that destroys the thickness-induced phase transition to paraelectric phase at h= hcr and induces the electret-like state with irreversible spontaneous polarization at h<hcr. The built-in field leads to noticeable increase of the average strain and elastic compliance under the film thickness decrease below hcr that scales as 1/h at small thicknesses h. The changes of the electron concentration by several orders of magnitude under positive or negative pressures can lead to the occurrence of high- or low-conductivity states, i.e. the nonvolatile piezo-resistive switching.

Anderson localization of Cooper pairs and Majorana fermions in an ultracold atomic Fermi gas with synthetic spin-orbit coupling

We theoretically investigate two-particle and many-particle Anderson localizations of a spin-orbit coupled ultracold atomic Fermi gas trapped in a quasi-periodic potential and subjected to an out-of-plane Zeeman field. We solve exactly the two-particle problem in a finite length system by exact diagonalization and solve approximately the many-particle problem within the mean-field Bogoliubov-de Gennes approach. At a small Zeeman field, the localization properties of the system are similar to that of a Fermi gas with conventional $s$-wave interactions. As the disorder strength increases, the two-particle binding energy increases and the fermionic superfluidity of many particles disappears above a threshold. At a large Zeeman field, where the interatomic interaction behaves effectively like a $p$-wave interaction, the binding energy decreases with increasing disorder strength and the resulting topological superfluidity shows a much more robust stability against disorder than the conventional $s$-wave superfluidity. We also analyze the localization properties of the emergent Majorana fermions in the topological phase. Our results could be experimentally examined in future cold-atom experiments, where the spin-orbit coupling can be induced artificially by using two Raman lasers, and the quasi-periodic potential can be created by using bichromatic optical lattices.

Multi-photon quantum communication in quantum networks

We propose and analyze a multiphoton-state coherent transport protocol in a coupled-resonator quantum network. A multiphoton swap gate between two antipodes can be achieved with neither external modulation nor coupling strength engineering. Moreover, we extend this result to a coupled-resonator chain of arbitrary length with different coupling strengths. Effects of decoherence via quantum nondemolition interaction are studied with sources including vacuum quantum fluctuation and bath thermal excitations when the bath is in the thermal equilibrium state. These observations are helpful to understand the decoherence effects on quantum communication in quantum coupled-resonator systems.

Superfluid density and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition of a spin-orbit coupled Fulde-Ferrell superfluid

We theoretically investigate the superfluid density and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition of a two-dimensional Rashba spin-orbit coupled atomic Fermi gas with both in-plane and out-of-plane Zeeman fields. It was recently predicted that, by tuning the two Zeeman fields, the system may exhibit different exotic Fulde-Ferrell (FF) superfluid phases, including the gapped FF, gapless FF, gapless topological FF and gapped topological FF states. Due to the FF paring, we show that the superfluid density (tensor) of the system becomes anisotropic. When an in-plane Zeeman field is applied along the \textit{x}-direction, the tensor component along the \textit{y}-direction $n_{s,yy}$ is generally larger than $n_{s,xx}$ in most parameter space. At zero temperature, there is always a discontinuity jump in $n_{s,xx}$ as the system evolves from a gapped FF into a gapless FF state. With increasing temperature, such a jump is gradually washed out. The critical BKT temperature has been calculated as functions of the spin-orbit coupling strength, interatomic interaction strength, in-plane and out-of-plane Zeeman fields. We predict that the novel FF superfluid phases have a significant critical BKT temperature, typically at the order of $0.1T_{F}$, where $T_{F}$ is the Fermi degenerate temperature. Therefore, their observation is within the reach of current experimental techniques in cold-atom laboratories.

Gapless topological Fulde-Ferrell superfluidity in spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases

Topological superfluids usually refer to a superfluid state which is gapped in the bulk but metallic at the boundary. Here we report that a gapless, topologically non-trivial superfluid with inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrell pairing order parameter can emerge in a two-dimensional spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas, in the presence of both in-plane and out-of-plane Zeeman fields. The Fulde-Ferrell pairing - induced by the spin-orbit coupling and in-plane Zeeman field - is responsible for this gapless feature. This exotic superfluid has a significant Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition temperature and has robust Majorana edge modes against disorder owing to its topological nature.

Gapless topological Fulde-Ferrell superfluidity induced by in-plane Zeeman field

Topological superfluids are recently discovered quantum matters that host topologically protected gapless edge states known as Majorana fermions - exotic quantum particles that act as their own anti-particles and obey non-Abelian statistics. Their realizations are believed to lie at the heart of future technologies such as fault-tolerant quantum computation. To date, the most efficient scheme to create topological superfluids and Majorana fermions is based on the Sau-Lutchyn-Tewari-Das Sarma model with a Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling on the }\textbf{\textit{x-y}}\textbf{ plane and a large out-of-plane (perpendicular) Zeeman field along the }\textbf{\textit{z}}\textbf{-direction. Here we propose an alternative setup, where the topological superfluid phase is driven by applying an in-plane Zeeman field. This scheme offers a number of new features, notably Cooper pairings at finite centre-of-mass momentum (i.e., Fulde-Ferrell pairing) and gapless excitations in the bulk. As a result, a novel gapless topological quantum matter with inhomogeneous pairing order parameter appears. It features unidirected Majorana surface states at boundaries, which propagate in the same direction and connect two Weyl nodes in the bulk. We demonstrate the emergence of such an exotic topological matter and the associated Majorana fermions in spin-orbit coupled atomic Fermi gases and determine its parameter space. The implementation of our scheme in semiconductor/superconductor heterostructures is briefly discussed.

Influence of detector motion on discrimination between photon polarizations

We investigate the discrimination between photon polarizations when measured by moving detectors. Both unambiguous and minimum-error discriminations are considered, and we analyze the the optimal successful (correct) probability as a function of the apparatus' velocity. The Holevo bound for polarization discrimination is also discussed and explicit calculation shows that the Holevo bound and the optimal successful (correct) probability for unambiguous (minimum-error) discrimination simultaneously increase or decrease.
